WebFTP upgrade
In just a few short minutes, we’ll be upgrading our WebFTP system. During the upgrade, we’ll have to take the system offline so we can change the database layout. It should only be a few minutes until WebFTP is up and running again.
OK, everything appears to be working again. Please let support know if you find any issues with the new version.

Is this related to the 3,500 ftp accounts that got hacked? For such an open company, you guys have been awful quiet about the hijacking of thousands of your customers by spammers…
June 6th, 2007 at 11:35 am
So that’s why my site is down, and I freaked out pretty bad, as I am in the middle of compiling php…or was..Oh well, will restart it in a few…oh, and if you keep backups, don’t worry about being hacked. The most they can do is take you down for a little while.
June 6th, 2007 at 11:38 am
Nevermind…I made a stupid mistake.
June 6th, 2007 at 11:40 am
From what I see so far, sessions expire after some time limit and there’s more login options (i.e. an “anonymous” checkbox). Pretty nice update.
June 6th, 2007 at 11:41 am
I wonder if this is because of the 3500 ftp accounts hacked.
June 6th, 2007 at 11:49 am
They confirmed to me that they will comment on this event soon on this blog. Also all interested users have already been contacted .
I beleive they will talk on this after solving the issue. Being open doesn’t mean let your enemy know what you are doing against him.
June 6th, 2007 at 11:56 am
Cant say I’m surprised DH got hacked…Any company of their size is open to it….Dreamhost more so as many of their customers are in it for the cheap deals they get with coupons. Hope you can sort it all out DH…I’m sure you will
June 6th, 2007 at 11:56 am
>Also all interested users have already been contacted .
Amazingly, e-mail does turn out to be the medium of choice in case of trouble, rather than making people check a weblog.. Hmm.. Who could’ve predicted?
June 6th, 2007 at 12:11 pm
Is this why my MediaWiki site is down? I’ve never seen a Fatal Error there… Was hoping it wasn’t something I did.
June 6th, 2007 at 12:30 pm
>Also all interested users have already been contacted
This isn’t true. We affected by this issue earlier in the week and as far as I know we haven’t gotten any communication from DH.
June 6th, 2007 at 12:35 pm
3500 accounts shouldn’t have been hacked. I don’t think the WebFTP will have anything to do with the 3500 accounts hacked, I dunno.
June 6th, 2007 at 12:54 pm
Actually, they’re all open to it. The others just aren’t big enough to make the news.
He was trying to word it in a way that isn’t accurate, hoping to get a bigger reaction.
He purposely left out this part: “Our records indicate that only roughly 20% of the accounts accessed -
less than 0.15% of the total accounts that we host - actually had
any changes made to them. Most accounts were untouched.”
And this part: “Many of the unauthorized logins did not result in changes at all (the intruder
logged in, obtained a directory listing and quickly logged back out)”
And also failed to mention that slight index page defacement isn’t really a major hack job by any means.
June 6th, 2007 at 12:57 pm
In the words of the cat from the Pepe LePew cartoons, “le YIPE!”
Doesn’t appear to be working just yet.
June 6th, 2007 at 1:01 pm
gahhh how do i contact support through email……. ive tried four times to send a support ticket now and its not working!
June 6th, 2007 at 1:06 pm
The java upload messes up.. Acts like its uploading while temporarily hanging my system.. But when uploading progress is finished, the applet looks like nothing happened. And when I look to where my files would be uploaded too, yep, nothing happened.
June 6th, 2007 at 1:07 pm
Wow, so many problems. Mainly… nothing works.
June 6th, 2007 at 1:15 pm
And I’m about done with DH - look at this frickin blog. Look how many posts they make saying something isn’t working, something is down, something is being fixed, but then it takes 5 times longer than they say it will to fix it.
I can’t have this, even as cheap as they are, especially if my info is being compromised like that. Pathetic.
June 6th, 2007 at 1:15 pm
my whole site ig GONEEEEEEEEEE.. WTF…. i just e-mailed support to see what the hell is going on
June 6th, 2007 at 1:17 pm
Godaddy had sent a email years ago to immediately change passwords, then that week you had to start logging in with your account # too.
June 6th, 2007 at 1:22 pm
“And also failed to mention that slight index page defacement isn’t really a major hack job by any means.”
Um, anyone not authorized to manipulate files on a server but doing so *is* a major concern. That they can see files on a server is a huge potential security, liability concern (especially if they’re able to grab source cgi files that otherwise protect sensitive data normally on a site).
That the hacker did something fairly innocuous with the opportunity does not lessen the severity of the breach.
June 6th, 2007 at 1:35 pm
Okay, so why doesn’t my WebFTP work now? It doesn’t even have a background. Looks like it’s in shell form or something. I can’t even click on a single button. I thought this was resolved?
June 6th, 2007 at 1:37 pm
mines not working either, keeps reseting back to the main page like the cookie was erased…. this is getting annoying…
June 6th, 2007 at 1:45 pm
I can’t login with the updated version of WebFTP, I get an “Internal Server Error”. Any chance I can use the old version?
June 6th, 2007 at 1:55 pm
“Okay, so why doesn’t my WebFTP work now? It doesn’t even have a background. Looks like it’s in shell form or something. I can’t even click on a single button. I thought this was resolved?”
Same problem here.
June 6th, 2007 at 1:59 pm
Nothing works on WebFTP for me neither.
June 6th, 2007 at 2:02 pm
Same problem, nothing works on webftp
June 6th, 2007 at 2:04 pm
Mine is finally working again. The new WebFTP looks great to be honest. I hope all of you get everything straightened out ASAP. I’d suggest loggin out and then back in again to see if yours works as well. That’s what I just did.
No mutiny aboard this ship.
June 6th, 2007 at 2:06 pm
finally works, but when i try uploading a file it gives me an error
“An error has occured
Could not generate a temporary file.”
Hope this gets fixed.
June 6th, 2007 at 2:10 pm
I think DH turned may have turned everything off because the “upgrade” did not fix the vulnerability.
Command-line ftp works just fine, so I can still work.
Hopefully DH had a packet sniffer running so they can see exactly how this problem is occurring.
This might be a good time to run a backup and change your passwords.
June 6th, 2007 at 2:28 pm
Another customer with a completely wiped website. This is horrible.
June 6th, 2007 at 2:34 pm
add me to the list, ugh.
June 6th, 2007 at 2:42 pm
Why is my entire website down?!?
June 6th, 2007 at 3:01 pm
Your pages are in at least one .snapshot - so don’t worry, no data should be lost!
June 6th, 2007 at 3:04 pm
I just connected to your site, Chris. Matt, your site is coming up with errors though, has something to do with advanced-cache based on the error statements.
June 6th, 2007 at 3:10 pm
dude, the webftp upgrade sucks. WTF DREAMHOST?!
June 6th, 2007 at 3:11 pm
I’m fed up with dreamhost. Im tranferring.
June 6th, 2007 at 3:12 pm
Why my site is charging to slow ?
June 6th, 2007 at 4:20 pm
It’s 6:18pm in Kansas and I can’t upload a damn thing to the WebFTP. I’m getting the same messages a few of you already mentioned. I thought this was supposed to have been fixed by now? I’m not in a hurry to upload anything, but it’s so freakin’ frustrating not knowing or being able to control what’s going on! Had I not seen this message board I would’ve blown a fuse. Hopefully this will be resolved soon…

June 6th, 2007 at 4:28 pm
I can’t upload anything to the webftp! whats goin on? i thought this has been fixed? so much for your upgrade.
June 6th, 2007 at 4:53 pm
WebFTP still not working, you guys better make up for this.
June 6th, 2007 at 5:23 pm
Most things work but the uploads….
June 6th, 2007 at 6:00 pm
The new upgrade does not work for me. I am in India and I tried it 5 minutes back when it was 06:25 hrs (Thursday, 7th June) here. This is the error message that I get -
The error occured in file /usr/local/ndn/web/webftp/includes/filesystem.inc.php on line 1734.
* function acceptFiles (/usr/local/ndn/web/webftp/modules/upload/upload.inc.php on line 239)

o argument 0: printBody
June 6th, 2007 at 6:09 pm
same problem here.
June 6th, 2007 at 6:50 pm
For the record, the new webftp is not working as of 6:50 pm PST. Every other action generates a login error and returns me to the login screen… Looking forward to it being back up and running. Thanks Happy Dreamhost webftp Crew! I know you’re working on it!
June 6th, 2007 at 7:59 pm
2 hrs later still the same error as mentioned earlier. One more thing is says is -
Could not generate a temporary file.
June 6th, 2007 at 9:33 pm
I was able to ftp if I went to net2ftp.com and logged in there, rather than through webftp.dreamhost.com (there I got the same errors mentioned above).
Note that there are new (much lower) limits on file size and processing time.
Hope this helps.
June 6th, 2007 at 10:10 pm
Lucinda, which s/w you used to ftp ? Any typical settings?
June 6th, 2007 at 11:31 pm
I can’t upload files by uploading one zip file. The file uploads (1Mb) and then says that it can’t create a temporary file. This is a problem, because I do regular updateds via the net2ftp and upload one zip file so that multiple files can be updated in one go.
Please fix this.
June 7th, 2007 at 1:44 am
The new updated WebFTP sure looks prettier than the old one.
Mark
June 7th, 2007 at 1:45 am
8 1/2 hrs and the problem persists. Really frustrating.
June 7th, 2007 at 1:49 am
I have not been notified, but most of our half-dozen sites are down. I certainly would appreciate some more communication so I know whether and which passwords I should change.
June 7th, 2007 at 1:57 am
Within seconds of posting here, our sites are working again. Coincidence? Yes.
I simultaneously regained the ability to http://FTP.
June 7th, 2007 at 2:18 am
Harvey, you are lucky. I am not. It’s been 9 hrs and I am still waiting for the FTP to work.
June 7th, 2007 at 2:20 am
I don’t know if this was the cause of my forum being hacked, but i am defiantly not impressed.
June 7th, 2007 at 4:06 am
Great new look guys, very web 2.0
That said, however, I’ve been experiencing constant problems trying to log into WebFTP, let alone update any aspect of my website. Loading time is excruciatingly slow, and I’m lucky to even get into my root folder. I click on any given file with the intention of updating it, and instead I am taken back to the login page. Please sort this out asap!
June 7th, 2007 at 4:53 am
Error. Bad. Cannot do what I need to do.
An error has occured
Could not generate a temporary file.
The error occured in file /usr/local/ndn/web/webftp/includes/filesystem.inc.php on line 1734.

June 7th, 2007 at 5:14 am
webFTP is not working. cannot upload anything.
June 7th, 2007 at 5:22 am
My FTP isn’t working either.
Oscar - Please login and open a ticket so that the error can be verified and someone from DreamHost can get to work on that…
June 7th, 2007 at 6:57 am
My session keeps expiring.
June 7th, 2007 at 7:06 am
Session keeps expiring as well. Not fond of the new update. Please FIX. Also, where’s the “select all files” button? New upgrade LOOKS better, but perfomance is NOT up to the par of the old version.
June 7th, 2007 at 7:07 am
yep me too. then absolutely everything went down. all my client sites are down..
June 7th, 2007 at 7:09 am
Hey , my ftp is not working either, i already opened a ticket to see what happen.
June 7th, 2007 at 10:52 am
JSYK, I can’t upload files anymore via the new WebFTP interface. It says some kind of error occured, and then when I click Back, the session has expired.
I had to create new files and copy the code one by one, which is really a pain.
I don’t care if WebFTP looks ugly; it’s the functionality that’s important. In other words, it used to work.
June 7th, 2007 at 12:10 pm
I just tryed to upload files using Java upload and it is not working. The java upload applet is starting, I can add files to the list, upload them but after that they do not appear on the server and I am being logged out from the webftp :/
June 7th, 2007 at 12:23 pm
I still can’t upload using webftp and get the error that:
“An error has occured
Could not generate a temporary file.”
It’s currently 3:23pm June 7 EST
June 7th, 2007 at 1:15 pm
I’m getting an error too, is anybody else being made to do multiple log ins also?
June 7th, 2007 at 5:51 pm
24 hrs later webFTP is still dead. Please restore back the old webFTP!! Dreamhost I hope you are looking into the problem? With so many people still facing problems, I am surprised that there’s no communication from Dreamhost?
June 7th, 2007 at 7:28 pm
Since this upgrade my gallery software has been broken. I have no idea why it should be effected, but i get errors like:
Platform Error
An error has occurred while interacting with the platform.
The exact nature of the platform error is unknown. A common cause are insufficient file system permissions. This can happen if you or your webhost changed something in the file system, e.g. by restoring data from a backup.
Anyone else get this?
June 7th, 2007 at 8:59 pm
Since DreamHost is not responding, you can do what I did - it works.
Go to -
http://tucows.com/get/195156_75277
and download the free version of FreeFTP 3.2. Install and run it to download/upload your website files to your host.
June 8th, 2007 at 3:37 am
# The maximum size of one file is restricted by net2ftp to 4882.8125 kB and by PHP to 5M
# The maximum execution time is 30 seconds
Didn’t that used to be 7M and 180 seconds? They call this an upgrade?
June 8th, 2007 at 4:29 am
The maximum execution time sucks, but if you have a large file just use WINSCP, you can easily upload a zip file and unzip it on the server.
Other than that, the new upgrade is awesome, it loads about 10 times quicker, did i say it was much faster?
It looks nicer, it’s lighter, and all in all, a great upgrade!
Thanks DH!
June 8th, 2007 at 6:53 am
Ashley, you are so rude. LEARN some MANNERS.
June 8th, 2007 at 7:35 am
Craig wrote:

I’ll use SSH, thankyouverymuch, but that’s not the point.
The only time I use WebFTP is when I’m _not_ at one of my own computers, but at say a friend’s or family member’s machine, or at any public machine where you can’t go around installing software (say at an internet cafe / library / work). WebFTP is for when I want to make some quick changes on the go, or quickly want to show someone something. It’s what Webmail is to Thunderbird/Outlook/..: a not-quite-as-good backup option for when you’re away from your own trusted hardware.
And the not-quite-as-good just got worse.
June 8th, 2007 at 9:48 pm
Man, you guys overreact. This is a rather specific thing here, and they only took webftp down.
That said, it’d be nice if the uploader worked. Seems to be a misconfig in the temp filer, since it’s affecting both the Java and normal uploader.
June 9th, 2007 at 1:13 am
Sorry, I’m failing to see what was so rude about Ashley’s comment. One has a right to be disgruntled - we’re paying for this.
June 14th, 2007 at 7:13 am
I’m not being rude, I’m mearly stating a fact, they asked for opinions/comments, and I gave my two cents worth. I *am* paying for the service DreamHost provides, so I should like that they’d listen to my comments when I give them.
June 16th, 2007 at 11:51 pm
For the last few days I have been having huge issues bith my web ftp I cant update my site much . If I am lucky I can get a few minutes but then my ftp session times out and when I try to log back in I get stupid errors which I have cleaned my cookies out plenty of times for and I still get them. This is really upsetting me now. When is this going to be fixed?
June 17th, 2007 at 1:29 am
Might be a wild guess on my part, but… when you file a support ticket?
June 17th, 2007 at 8:46 am
OH so you think I would say something here and not file a support ticket..Gezze been there done that days ago.
June 17th, 2007 at 5:34 pm
Ah, so you just enjoy posting where you know it’s just gonna get skipped over and added to the list of people who can’t read clearly displayed instructions. Gotcha. And… for the record:
Wasn’t put there to look pretty. Either follow up on your support ticket or suck it up.
June 18th, 2007 at 6:10 am
Been doing that FFS. Its not up to you to reply to me either. Try dealing with your own issues before telling someone else what they should do.
June 18th, 2007 at 3:32 pm
But you make it so damn easy. Besides, I don’t have any issues to deal with. Not that I’d spend all this time crying about them here when I could be finding an alternative method of getting things done until the problem was fixed. Like, for instance… um, not using web FTP–it’s unsecure as hell. But hey, you know what you’re doing.
July 4th, 2007 at 1:24 am
Java Upload is still not ACTUALLY uploading the content. It takes the time required to upload it, but then once it’s done, it doesn’t show up on the server. Can someone fix this, or what?
December 31st, 2007 at 5:30 am
thankss babty..
January 21st, 2008 at 4:20 pm
i use the old version properly.
thanks for sharing.
