guinness backup drive replacement
Posted (June 8th, 2007 at 12:53 am PST) by KellyIt looks like the backup hard drive in guinness has called it quits. We have to take the server down to replace it, as it is not one of the hot-swap raided hard drives that your live MySQL data resides on. I’m sorry for the inconvenience, the downtime should only be about 10 minutes.
–
Update! The new backup drive is installed, and service is back online. Fresh backups of your data will start running shortly.
–
And, I lied. It crashed while formatting the drive. I’m heading back downstairs to see what the problem is now!
–
The server is teasing me. By the time I arrived in the datacenter and attached a crash cart, the machine was alive and well. It was just being unresponsive to even pings for a little bit. I will continue to monitor the situation and fix any problems that arise.

don’t listen to all the nay sayers. ALWAYS WITH THE NAY SAYING.
wtf are you on about?
He’s just happy he got first rant on a DH post! It’s a special moment, don’t take it away from him!
i just wanted to let the DH team know that not everyone thinks they’re a bunch of incompetent dildos.
“And, I lied.”
That’s okay. Telling the truth is rapidly becoming “un-american” anyway.
Is anyone else having problems on something OTHER than guinness, because I’m pretty much dead on my end (all my sites), can’t get to the panel, can’t http://ftp... and that’s not where I’m at. -_-
Can’t contact support, naturally.
Yep. My sites work, but the panel doesn’t, can’t get into the shell, either.
God damn it, people, how do we submit a support issue when THE ONLY ALLOWED METHOD — the control panel — is down?
This is unacceptable.
Mine is down too and was up only a little while ago.
The panel isn’t down for me, it just takes about 15 minutes to load
Same here, can’t get to panel, can get to sites fine though
Ok, cool, misery loves company. Will check back in later.
I am slowly but surely submitting a support request in the “official” way.
Since no one at Dreamhost will read these comments (or if they do, nothing will be done), perhaps taking 45 minutes to submit a support ticket about the support system being broken will have more effect.
My sites have been intermittently down for at least 6 hours, when I first noticed. Running a tracert reveals the problem is at dreamhost (no surprise).
I get response times less than 10ms every hop along the way until:
NEW-DREAM_NETWORKS-LLC-Los-Angeles.ge-0-1-0.410.ar1.LAX3.gblx.net [64.215.183.50]
and
basic-xlax.lei.dreamhost.com [208.113.142.214]
At those routers I am seeing dropped packets, and when they don’t drop, response times ranging from over 70ms to around 200ms.
Frustration #1: The problem in the first place.
Frustration #2: There is no way to even notify Dreamhost of the problem because panel is affected by the outage.
Frustration #3: Dreamhost has not yet even acknowledged the problem.
Dreamhost had enough sense to host this dreamhoststatus site outside their main system… in Colorado apparently. Why can’t they host their panel site independently also? That way at least we can still enter trouble tickets when Dreamhost has problems at their LA IDC.
BTW, has anyone at dreamhost ever heard of redundancy?
I realize posting this here is not going to help anything, but with NOTHING else I can do….
why couldn’t i have been on a server named guinness
I can’t even get the panel to log me in. Every time I try to submit my login name and password which I know are correct, it just goes back to the login screen.
This sucks.
@Rassi
I’ve had the same problem in the past. I cured it by clearing all cookies (or just the dreamhost related ones) and then logging in again.
dreamhoststatus.com is hosted in san francisco not colorado. I even heard someone say it was in japan once… lol
THOSE OF YOU THAT USE THIS BLOG AS A WAY TO CONTACT THE SUPPORT TEAM ARE RE-TAR-DED. No offense, but c’mon! Look right under “Leave a Reply.”
“Comments posted here may not be viewed by DreamHost staff at all. This is not a way to contact DreamHost.”
http://dreamhost.com/contact.cgi That’s a good place to start if the web panel is down and you need to get a hold of DH.
it’s a nightmare.
