DreamHost Webpanel database upgrade June 20, 10PM PDT

We will be performing some maintenance on our central databases beginning Wednesday, June 20 at 10PM PDT and ending 4 hours later at Thursday, June 21 at 2AM PDT. The expected downtime within this window is 2 hours. This will bring the DreamHost Webpanel, as well DreamHost-provided Squirrelmail offline.

Update Thu Jun 21 00:41:31 PDT 2007: Upgrades have been completed.

Is that why my site is down?

@Dumb User: maybe because of the filer update on the earlier post?

    Fucking annoying =/

    Annoying

Nothing Surprising. Just resolve it quickly. Hope email is not going to suffer.

“Is that why my site is down?”

unless there’s some almighty time difference from here to the US causing a weeks leap into the future, then I`d like Wed. 13th June 2007`s and Sat. 16th June 2007`s UK Loto numbers. tyvm! and then, doubt it ;)

hmm….10PM PDT…..~8am BST, not bad. hf!

  8. Henrik Says:

It’s a good thing that you announce the maintenance well on before hand.

  9. why Says:

Did anyone look closely at “Dumb User’s” link? It not likely it was a real post - the name alone is a dead giveaway.

Hmm/Hmmmz - Is it annoying when you have to get your oil changed too? Maintenance is maintenance. The timing may be inconvenient for you personally, but it’s not terribly convenient for DH staff either.

Sanjaya - the post says that the webpanel and webmail access using Squirrelmail will be unavailable. The mail servers themselves should be unaffected (allowing incoming and outgoing mail) and pop/imap access should still work during that time (but given the general mail access complaints that appear to happen all the time, that may not be true - or it could be that outlook is driving some users nuts)

  10. JLP at AllFinancialMatters Says:

Is something going on today? My blog and everything connected to it are loading slowly today.

  11. Web Hosting Says:

whats up today? My site is running so slow.

  12. DateReader Says:

@Anyone complaining about this, or thinking this is the cause of a current problem:

READ THE DAMN DATES IN THE POST!
This is a notification that later on this month DH will be doing some database maintenance. If you currently have a problem, contact support.

I like the fact that maintenance is scheduled and posted.

  13. F Says:

    Hi,

My name is Sprite. I’m a server at Dreamhost.
My last name is Reboot and my middle name is Everyday.
    I’m dating Downtime. I love Downtime…

I’m looking for some friendships with Reliable and Uptime. Do you know where they hang out?

  14. Chris Salisbury Says:

    Arghhh

    LOL

Glad to see you guys are on it. I was working on my site and all of a sudden my work was gone!

  15. Mike Says:

I wonder which would be easier for Dreamhost:

    1. Not posting things that are scheduled in advance.

    2. Teaching a bunch of retards how to work a calendar.

There are people that have posted here that could see a weather report stating that it will rain early next week, walk out on their lawn and see that the grass is wet (WHILE the sprinklers are running), then call the weather station to see if their wet lawn has been caused by next week’s rain.

While the posts here show the occasional problem with Dreamhost, I think the comments section shows a much bigger problem with the current education system.

  16. F Says:

I think the comments section shows a much bigger problem with Dreamhost… I think you’re pissing the point here…

  17. snewp Says:

Ahahaha, this is getting better and better. This is almost a second bash.org, sometimes this blog is even better! I hardly ever complain about anything, since most things happen with any host and maintenance is something we all need, sooner or later.

If the comments section is really showing a big problem with DH, how come only a hand full of whiners - oh sorry I mean users - complain? And, if I may add, most of them complain about stuff not even related to posts made by DH staff! Keep it up guys, I like reading this stuff!

    Thank you!

  18. Mike Says:

If people can’t read a post, then figure out what today’s date is, that is NOT Dreamhost’s problem.

  19. snewp Says:

Well Mike, seems reading more than 2 sentences is a big deal for some people nowadays, so they stop reading after glaring at the headline for a second, go into a fit and start venting.

  20. Mike Says:

seems reading more than 2 sentences is a big deal for some people

You could change it to this and it would still be true:

seems reading is a big deal for some people

    ;-)

  21. cho0b Says:

The only problem I see here is people that think the DH tech support reads these comments. These people should be forwarding their complaints and/or account issues with the support team directly.

Anyone that says anything remotely near “how can i do that when my webpanel is down?” should probably go try and buy domains and host them at Registerfly (because users that dumb deserve their “service”)

  22. Nemanja Says:

    June 20??!

    Today is June 13 !!!!

What’s wrong with the calendar, where do you come from Dreamhost, Mars?! :D

  23. why Says:

Mike, snewp, cho0b, Date Reader -

Dudes, take it easy. people are stupid. Accept it. Remember that an IQ of 100 is AVERAGE, meaning that there are some that are much lower. The first post by “Dumb User” was a sham posted by me because I KNEW people would start doing it. I’m sorry. I was bad. But I did have fun.

If you have questions about system availability and would like to see if someone else can confirm or duplicate the problems you are having, try http://discussion.dreamhost.com There are some nice people out there that will (if you’re polite) try to help. It’s not uncommon to have responses in under an hour.

It’s a fast way to find out if you’re stupid before admitting it to DH support.

  24. Dave Says:

Let’s look at the bright side: If you leave, my server may run faster!

  25. cho0b Says:

    word to that dave.

  26. Dino Says:

    Nemanja,

Where are you come from ?? Pluto ??

It’s an announcement so that everyone will be ready for the date… doing some backup or reading mail from mail client instead of webmail.

  27. Dino Says:

Well, hope they do it. I’m accessing my panel rather slowly these days

  28. Chito Says:

I haven’t been able to access the panel since last night. Isn’t this one week early?

  29. James Says:

I haven’t been able to access the panel since last night. Isn’t this one week early?

A, with that logic in mind (thank the gods someone can read a calendar), did you contact support? And, before you reply that you can’t do it because you can’t connect to the panel, yada yada and all that we’ve heard 4 billion times already, it’s no excuse. Since you obviously know it’s a week early, then clearly it’s a separate and unrelated issue. Hopefully you reached the same conclusion. I’d hate to have had to hand it to you, too…

  30. F Says:

I’m posting here only to vent my frustration… call it therapy.

I’ll post here useless things until I see no reason for it. You’ll hear from me on my next reboot.

And yes, FYI, I contact support, I actually know my site’s down. And I know posting here won’t do s**t, goto 1.

Some people just can’t read… This is like the comedy channel

  32. BradAaron Says:

I cannot login to the webpanel at all.

    Please help.

  33. Mike Says:

I’m posting here only to vent my frustration… call it therapy.

Or, better yet, call it what it really is: pointless whining.

I’ll post here useless things until I see no reason for it.

That’s called being a trolling idiot. If you need a shoulder to cry on, that’s your mommy’s job.

I actually know my site’s down.

Really? Let’s see the traceroute results.

And I know posting here won’t do s**t

That’s not necessarily true. It will make you stupid. Or did you just mean it won’t do anything besides clutter the comments with pointless whining?

  34. F Says:

    Hey Mike,

When you’re insulting others, are you venting your frustration too?

    [sprite]$ uptime
    08:57:18 up 1 day, 41 min, 2 users, load average: 608.88, 353.35, 160.15
    [sprite]$

Here are my “traceroute results”… call it pointless whining… fanboy.

  35. Mike Says:

When you’re insulting others, are you venting your frustration too?

Maybe I wouldn’t have to keep calling out retards like you if you didn’t do stupid things like post “uptime” info and call it “traceroute” results. If you don’t know what traceroute is, then you don’t know your server is down, which was my point when I said it the first time.

It’s cute when the little retards call people that are smarter than them “fanboys.”

Siding with common sense isn’t the same as siding with Dreamhost, but if it seems that way to you, it probably just means that you and common sense aren’t on the same team.

What are you going to do for your next trick? Post uptime again and call it ping results?

  36. James Says:

Maybe I wouldn’t have to keep calling out retards like you if you didn’t do stupid things like post “uptime” info and call it “traceroute” results.

Is it such a bad thing that I was just about to say the same thing, but a lot less nice?

  37. Mike Says:

The funny thing is that I pointed out that continuing to post would make him look stupid, in my post right before his. It sure didn’t take long to prove that theory.

  38. why Says:

No, you said he would be ‘… made stupid’ - not look stupid. I was going to correct that but I got here too late.

    F- dude 608? SHEESH, that’s bad.

  39. Mike Says:

Well, if posting didn’t make him stupid… does that mean that being stupid is what’s making him post? Kinda like the chicken and the egg mystery… ;-)

  40. Matt Says:

    I

  41. Mike Says:

    I

Nice letter… there’s 25 more where that came from! ;-)

  42. F Says:

Well, Mikey, you turned out really smart! I envy you. I really do. You’re a lot smarter than me.

If I had a problem reaching the server I wouldn’t have access to SSH, right fanboy? Or were you trying to say ping? With an average load of 608.88 I should see my site with no problems at all, that’s why I needed the traceroute, right?

But, hey, I’m the retard, stupid and trolling idiot here… I can’t distinguish between traceroute and uptime, right?

You should introduce your left brain cell to your right brain cell. That way they wouldn’t be so lonely. Moron.

Now, let me introduce you double quote:

    Irony
Another important use of quotation marks is to indicate or call attention to ironic or apologetic words. Ironic quotes can also be called scare, sneer, shock, or distance quotes. Ironic quotes are sometimes gestured in oral speech using air quotes:

My brother claimed he was too “busy” to help me.
Ironic quotes should be used with care. Without the intonational cues of speech, they could obscure the writer’s intended meaning. They could also be confused easily with quotations.

In a similar sense, quotes are also used to indicate that the writer realizes that the word is not being used in its (currently) accepted sense.

In the fifteenth century, we “knew” that the Sun’s revolution divided day from night.
Woody Allen joked, “I’m astounded by people who want to ‘know’ the universe when it’s hard enough to find your way around Chinatown.”

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quotation_mark

There’s something wrong with the current education system, don’t you agree Mike?

  43. why Says:

    Ouch. (grin)

  44. Mike Says:

You’re a lot smarter than me.

That would make me feel more special if it didn’t apply to just about everyone.

If I had a problem reaching the server I wouldn’t have access to SSH, right fanboy?

Not necessarily. Still can’t figure out the whole traceroute thing?

If you’re going to throw fanboy around as an insult, is it safe to say you’re not a fan? If so, wouldn’t that make you an idiot for not leaving? Thousands of hosts out there… and you can’t find one that won’t make you cry?

With an average load of 608.88 I should see my site with no problems at all, that’s why I needed the traceroute, right?

NFS. Research it. Do you really think your actual server load was at 608.88? And SSH works fine?

But, hey, I’m the retard, stupid and trolling idiot here… I can’t distinguish between traceroute and uptime, right?

    You finally got something right.

Now, let me introduce you double quote:

Nice sentence. That’s a great way to kick off an English lesson that you’re not qualified to give.

You should wrap your entire posts with quotes, so whenever you say something stupid, you can just backtrack and call it irony.

There’s something wrong with the current education system, don’t you agree Mike?

Did a school give you a diploma? That’s my answer.

How did that traceroute go? Are you saving those results for when someone asks what your server load average is?

At least you’re living up to your word:

I’ll post here useless things until I see no reason for it.

  45. michael Says:

No need to fight. Its just a database upgrade. Try to keep the world in perspective!

  46. F Says:

    We’re not fighting.
We’re all friends: me, Mike and traceroute.

Mike is seriously ill. He’s having a verbal diharrea. You should send him a get well e-card.

  47. Al Says:

It will be only two hours. A good opportunity to stay away from your computer and take a walk or whatever.

  48. Mike Says:

We’re all friends: me, Mike and traceroute.

    Have you even met traceroute?

    He’s having a verbal diharrea.

Coming from the person that’s proud to continue posting here for no reason, as part of a little tantrum.

You should send him a get well e-card.

Send the card to your server, since you’re convinced it’s running with a true 600+ load average. Poor thing must be near death.

Let’s see… when you couldn’t figure out traceroute, that made me a fanboy. Now, you don’t get NFS & load averages, so that makes me seriously ill. What next? You’ll forget how to tie your shoes and that will make me a quadriplegic?

  49. david Says:

    site down aaaaaaaaaaaa

  50. F Says:

david, I would suggest the traceroute routine.
Download Putty, input your username and password, then type uptime. Post here your results.

Mike, can you help david, and analyze his traceroute results?
Don’t forget to call him retard in the beginning, middle and end of your sentence.

  51. hina Says:

he might not have to if you stopped trying to pass uptime off as traceroute :)

This is hilarious. F’s digging himself deeper and deeper… nice. People should learn to read through posts properly and be sure to understand them before commenting. If you don’t have anything remotely relevant to say, then it probably shouldn’t be said at all.

    Repeat ad nauseam.

Thanks a bundle for posting this well in advance. It’s nice to know :)

*dances off into the distance, singing along with ping*

  52. James Says:

david, I would suggest the traceroute routine.

F, I would suggest you just stop, before you redefine useless trolling tool. Obviously your server’s up. Also obviously, it has nothing to do with a webpanel update that hasn’t even happened yet. So please, put your head back up your ass and continue to be one among many ignorant morons. You’re better at it.

  53. Matt Says:

    @ Joe and Dino

    Dear Tools,
Nemanja was clearly casting Level Four Sarcasm. I guess you’re just going to have to develop senses of humor.
    Matt

  54. Daniil Says:

I never have and never will about DreamHost. I’m on moe, and have almost never had any problems at all. I even wrote a little CGI script that returns uptime from the server. Is this enough proof:

    07:12:59 up 38 days, 4:23, 4 users, load average: 2.85, 3.66, 3.68

? DreamHost is great, but some of its servers are just not too reliable.

  55. decio del vecchio Says:

  57. hanil Says:

Well sipmly I think I should look somewhere else. Dreamhost is like a biicchh full of trouble..Server down, mysql down, control panel down.. What is the backup servers for? Can’t this be solved without always having hours of “server down”???

  58. James Says:

Can’t this be solved without always having hours of “server down”???

Not when they’re performing database upgrades, and the database they’re upgrading is the same one the panel and webmail uses, they can’t. They have backup servers, yes. But if the backend database needs to be upgraded, well… uh, not happening.

  59. GAAHHHH!!! Says:

Webpanel down AGAIN, no webmail AGAIN

  60. / Says:

a couple hours downtime ~12am is better than colo cost, stress, COST, etc… but yeah - very annoying when trying to get work done.

  61. Brad Zimmerman Says:

While I appreciate scheduled maintenance windows - and the appropriate notices - it looks like the scope on this one isn’t very clear or accurately stated. It seems like SMTP/IMAP is inaccessible, along with …well everything else basically …meaning my web site.

  62. James Says:

It seems like SMTP/IMAP is inaccessible, along with …well everything else basically meaning my web site.

There’s a support ticket in there somewhere. ‘Cuz I can guarantee it’s neither effecting everyone nor related to the post in question. Webmail being down, however, is related to this and… uh, they already said it’d be toast.

  63. Adam Cooke Says:

WIll i still recieve mail sent to me during the update?

  64. heomap Says:

    so fast, good :)

  65. komik resim Says:
