Swarthy Server Move!
Posted (July 9th, 2007 at 4:35 pm PST) by micahDue to space and power constraints in our primary datacenter we are moving the entire shared cluster “swarthy” to our LAX facility at 11:00PM PDT, this Friday night, July 13th 2007. All webservers, mail servers, file servers, and MySQL servers in the swarthy cluster will be unreachable during the move, which we expect to take approximately 5 hours.
The swarthy cluster contains the following web servers: andor atomic cyrax dali dimarco frigga fud genki gradius hug kenobi lilac limbo-swarthy narcissus noid postac rock samus sektor slash slaw soda squirm strange thorin tron van vidar vlad wiggle zebes
If your site is on any of these servers this status post applies to you. Also, if you check the “Account Status” button on the upper right hand of the webpanel ( https://panel.dreamhost.com ) you should see your cluster under the section “Your Email Server:”.
We do apologize for this inconvenience. Rest assured we will do everything possible to keep downtime to a minimum.
If you have any questions regarding the server move, please contact our support team.
Update: 4:20AM: Most if not all services have been restored. We are working on any straggling problems, please contact support if your website is still down.

Umm, July 14th is a Saturday. So is it Saturday the 14th, or Friday the 13th (cue scary music)? Not that I care as neither of my two accounts are on this cluster.
Since it’s scheduled to start at 11pm and may last up to 5 hours, it could be that it’s starting on Friday the 13th but will not be completed until Saturday the 14th.
nice planning dh guys on Friday the 13, whats more lucky? just make sure to carry a ladder over your head as well!

For anybody that is curious, Tech Support has replied to my inquiry and confirmed that the swarthy cluster’s move to the LAX datacenter will take place on Friday, July *13th*, 2007 - there is no Friday, July 14th, 2007 
Yes. Thanks for clearing that up, rlparker. I originally had scheduled it for an hour later but due to the number of servers we’re moving I pushed it back a bit. I just forgot to update the date as well as the day when I changed it. Sorry for the confusion folks!
The downtime window is officially from 11pm PDT Friday, July 13th, 2007 to 4am PDT Saturday, July 14th, 2007.
I am on Email Server spacey but my e-mails are not working.
Has notification gone out to all affected customers? I’m on this cluster but haven’t received notification (I get CP changes and newsletters but not this).
Fernando, definitely the right place to put that. How about opening a support ticket instead?
Lucky Friday the 13th! Lets all hope the server doesn’t blow up right when they lay a finger on it. hehehe.

If the delivering MTA is configured correctly, it’ll try more than once to get your mail to you. In the event it cant or isn’t configured correctly, DH doesn’t control the external mail servers’ reaction to a timed out connection. And anyone who owns a MTA configured to make one and only one attempt to deliver mail should be shot. Twice. Three times for good measure.

Hrm, I could have sworn I used to get email warnings about major server changes and planned outages. Blogs are great and all, but really my days are not spent hitting refresh on the dreamhost control panel. If you are going to stop sending out emails in favor of an RSS feed, you might want to mention that, so people can subscribe….
