Spacey mail problems

If you are on the spacey cluster you are possibly seeing mail send to you bounce back with a mail loops back error. We are working on this issue right now and the fix is currently running. You can tell if you are in the spacey cluster by logging into the DreamHost web panel and then click on Account Status on the top right. The area that says ‘Your Email Server:’ you will see what server you are on. If it’s spacey then you are affected by this. We are currently reconfiguring our backend database for mail service. This unfortunately takes a while to run but as it runs accounts are getting fixed. Sorry about the problems this has caused you we will have this fixed up for you soon.

The problem came up as a result of some security changes we were making on our mail servers.

    Thank you for the update, Ralph. I’ve had very good stable service for the past week, for which many thanks - have been able to get lots done, but I know some spaceys are having problems with this.

    Please understand that Missing email is a high severity problem.! Seems to be happening on Spunky as well as spacey.

    I expect the severity level assigned relates to Dreamhost service as a whole.

    Obviously ANY outage is “severe” to those that it inconveniences, but I should think the host definition would depend on how widespread the issue is. If it’s confined to impairing email on Spacey (and possibly Spunky) I don’t think “medium” is a bad call. And my company is on Spacey.

    Otherwise they’d be classifying everything “high” and the Severity meter would be useless.

    I also agree that mail outages are high severity. Severity should be relative to the people that are affected, not relative to Dreamhost’s overall business.

    Then what would a medium or low issue ever be? My website either works or it doesn’t. I’m either getting my email or I’m not. If not, it’s a high severity problem (for me). I KNOW it’s a high severity problem for me.

    What I WANT to know is whether it’s a high severity problem for Dreamhost, and that should be a calculation based on the number of customers effected, the time to fix, whether the issue is cascading or localized, whether data is being stored or lost during the outage, etc.

    I don’t read “medium” as DreamHost saying that getting your service back up isn’t priority one, simply that you don’t need to worry about this being a widespread issue. It’s localized, controlled and under repair at this minute.

    I am now getting email again on both of my accounts. However I’ve also gotten reports from more than one client that while my email was bouncing it was showing as being permanently down. That’s not good.

    I see a resolution of “solved” for this issue, however I don’t see any email showing up when I go to “squirrel mail”. Can you acknowledge that the issues with email are really not resolved and that you’re still working on them? If you believe that it’s all resolved, then I would appreciate it if you would re-open the case.

    At least I’m not seeing any bounced mail though, which is an improvement. Unless it’s all being lost, which would be even worse (because the folks trying to send me email would have no clue that I wasn’t getting it.)

    I’m curious — are you all able to log in to check your email (webmail or IMAP or whatever)? I tried to change a forward-only address to a mailbox (associated with an existing shell account) and anybody sending me mail gets a bounce with “user unknown”. This seems to be different behavior than what is described above (about the mail loop). I wonder if the support tech understood that the behavior I’m seeing (my mailbox simply doesn’t exist) is not what everybody else is seeing. Unless of course everybody else is also getting “unknown user” bounces.

    We’ve got mail servers across the entire DH system and mail reliability is becoming a GIGANTIC problem. E mail is not being delivered, or received consistently. SPAM is on a rapid increase in-spite of SPAM Assassin settings and filtering. SquirrelMail is anemic at best, and doesn’t allow marking inbox messages as SPAM content.

    We’ve put two new websites online this month, and used another host because I could not introduce another client to these kinds of issues.

    Please, please, please Dreamhost! Help us have good e-mail. We’ll love you for it.

    The problem perists for me.

    All my e-mail accounts can’t receive messages (they are returned back to the sender with a Fatal Error).
    I’m on Spacey :(

    Please let us know when the problem will be fixed for all the accounts on Spacey.

    Problem still the same for us, We Can log into a few of our email accounts but mail for the entire day is still missing . The Dreamhost service I find is usually very stable , reliable , speedy Customer service I’m always singing its praises .

    For some reason we haven’t got not one reply from the Dreamhost Team all day Anybody had the same ??

    Back to the email drama….The ones we cannot log into even when user name and pass are entered correct gives this message
    “ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server”
    Any one else getting this ?

    Come on Team Dreamhost we love you over here , its not resolved for us yet ,
    Any news ? Please

    I can’t begin to explain how disappointed I am with Dreamhost at the moment. One of my clients which is a lending office that has 30 loan officers has been down for two days now. I always recommend DH to my clients but the lack of response in this matter is ridiculous almost like they don’t take their business serious. I can understand one day with no email, but two days?? Going on 3 ?? I just sent another email to an account and got the same error message. What does someone have to do to get their mail working???

    two days with problem in e-mail. very slow the reply of the support. What this happening? Please, check support messages, and check all accounts of e-mail on the my control panel. I will have that to change of server? I am losing credibility of customers.

    I’m not sure which is worse at this point - the ridiculously long downtime (I’m just glad I’m not using DH for business purposes… major money can be lost by a lapse of communication this long), or the fact that we’re all totally in the dark, left with only this status post that says the issue is “Resolved”. Come on dreamhost, throw us a bone here.

    Can I get another server than spacey? Says:

    I made some changes to accounts and now I can’t receive mail to those accounts. I found a workaround by forwarding the email to another external account (hotmail, etc.).
    One user whose account I did not change is working perfectly fine.

    They say it’s fixed but it’s not fixed. I’ve been waiting 2 days also. this is pretty frustrating and is the second time in less than a year that I’ve had major email issues. The problem is I can’t find any other reasonably priced service that lets me use IMAP. . .

    what is going on with authentication?

    and yes, i have to agree with Roman… who the hell runs mission critical email, for a business with loads of offices/client on a shared web host?

    I like that there is another blog entry that is Highly critical and also Resolved, and yet email still doesn’t work. Imagine how much less people would be pissed off if DH just said what was going on rather than keeping everybody in the dark.
