Stimpy lost a drive

The MySQL server “stimpy” has experienced a drive failure. We’re working on getting the issue resolved as soon as possible, and this entry will be updated when stimpy is back in action.

As always, if you have any questions about this, please contact support.

Update Tue Jul 31 20:59:11 PDT 2007: As things turn out, stimpy suffered from unrecoverable filesystem corruption on one of its data drives. The data is in the process of being restored from backup, and your databases will be back online as soon as we can. Further updates to follow.

Update Wed Aug 1 1:01am: The recovery process has been finished and stimpy is up and working again.

Well, that explains why my blog has been down all night all well. Hey — can I have a refund?

So, how old is the backup that the DBs are being restored from?

I’m guessing this would affect the “stimpy:fali” MySQL Server ?

Well, this is why I left DH; I got sick of all the down time with all of these never ending issues with DH’s servers… :(

And why is this Dreamhosts fault? And why aren’t you thanking them for restoring all your data from a very recent back up?
I don’t know if you have had a hard drive failure, but you can’t do anything about it!
The only improvement I could suggest to dream host, would be to kick off members like the proceding 2 commentators.

And Dan C, maybe you should try and find a company that offer refunds for down time that’s less than 1% a month! Good luck, I’ll tell you now, you WONT find one!

The question is, why isn’t DH running (at least) RAID 1 on all their servers? There’s really no excuse these days for not having a hot spare on every drive at all times.

RAID only gives you redundancy at the hardware level; if your filesystem gives way, you’re still screwed.

Thanks Dreamhost, I’m glad I don’t have to lift a finger to fix it :)

DREAMHOST ROCK. Never had a host with 99.8 % uptime before so the guys above saying they are crap seem to not be using this incredible service
