RESOLVED Network Problems

Unfortunately we are experiencing a return of similar network problems that we experienced yesterday. Please keep your eye on this post as we will update it as soon as we have more information. Sorry for the inconvenience.

- UPDATE -

The problem has been tracked down to a naughty switch and has been resolved. Due to the amount of traffic that dreamhoststatus.com is getting, we are leaving it static for the time being. If you are still experiencing problems, please contact support.

UPDATE TO THE UPDATE -Thu Aug 16 16:38:09 PDT 2007-
Shortly after the last update, things went down hill again. It turns out the switch wasn’t the problem. For the time being, everything is back up and running and the problem appears to be fixed. Continue to check this space for updates and as always.

Thu Aug 16 16:51:46 PDT 2007
While the networking issues appear to be gone, we are still dealing with fallout from them. This includes a few non-responsive caching DNS servers causing more slow down. We are bringing these back up now and everything should be smooth again soon

Thu Aug 16 20:28:38 PDT 2007
DNS is back up and running. Everything appears to be working fine. We will keep monitoring this issue throughout the night to catch any problems that may arise. If you have any problems whatsoever, please contact support.

Fri Aug 16 13:12:38 PDT 2007
After a core router config change we believe the network outages of Wednesday and Thursday of this week will not return. We will be digging deeper into the situation to determine why the issue appeared suddenly with no change on our part. This problem report will be left unresolved for awhile longer until we’re quite sure it is not resurfacing.

  1. Nameless Says:

I love how the severity is marked as “Low”.

  2. Nameless Says:

And now they just changed it to “High”. Ho ho ho.

  3. elbekko Says:

My server works, but not being able to access the web panel is fairly annoying.
And this is far from low severity I’d say.

  4. Nadim Says:

Me too, it has just been changed to high…

What a NIGHTMARE!!! Really, maybe you can change your company name… NightmareHost…

  5. Adam Says:

    SQL sure would be nice.

  6. Jerry Says:

    RED ALERT!!

Let’s keep the whining to a minimum, okay folks? I’m sure they’re working on it.

  7. Over It Says:

Yeah, between this and the limited CPU processing (for running things like “gem install rfacebook”), I’m looking for a new host.

  8. Nameless Says:

Jerry: We’re paying them money for a service and the service we’re currently receiving is mediocre — we have every right to whine.

  9. Kellyone Says:

Give ‘em a break! Nothing in the world works perfectly!
They had everything up and running pretty quick yesterday!
Chill, it’s too early to give ‘em hell!

  10. Reuben Says:

How about giving some free hosting to all those affected? Half a month or similar. It’s really annoying to have the site unavailable two days in a row. I pay for the shell account as well as the space, and this is affecting my efficiency.

  11. Ne0nguy Says:

What a perfect week to switch to Dreamhost.

  12. Josh Says:

I just want to know whats going on. Does it have something to do with the heat in LA? I know its not record breaking heat, but just ideas. It is really depressing guys not knowing whats going.

  13. Ty Says:

damn.. goodbye dreamhost? boss’s demands. :(

  14. Tired Of Downtime Says:

If whining about it would fix it, Dreamhost would never have any problems. If this were any other company, you’d be fired by now. I feel almost trapped in a marriage that has failed.

  15. none Says:

    80% uptime? ridiculous.

  16. fedUpWithDreamhost Says:

Ne0nguy, there is never a good week to switch to Dreamhost, only the perfect week to leave.

  17. Ozh Says:

No matter the price, I want to be hosted on the same server as dreamhoststatus.com ….

  18. Shannon Says:

This is the first time I’ve seriously been affected by DreamHost’s services in two years, so while it’s really irritating and annoying, good luck trying to find somewhere better and cheaper. If I have to live without email for one day every two years, it’s probably the best I can ask for.

  19. woookie Says:

I’m moving to a new hosting service right now, this is pathetic

  20. PCNews Says:

My website is up again… Good!

  21. fLUx Says:

I joined yesterday (moved from Bluehost), and I hope this doesnt happen daily…

Although, I have friends who have been with DH for years, and they rarely have problems, so I’m confident I made the right choice for a shared host…

….oh, just checked my site & panel, all working fine now, that was nice and quick I guess…

  22. Chris Says:

I’d hoped to use my site to organize my apps for graduate schools and had set aside time tonight to do it. Nice to have a night off….

  23. JR Says:

My site has been down or slow enough to be called down for almost a week now, so this is not a problem that just popped up yesterday or today. I was shocked when they called it resolved yesterday. But I do admit after 6 years with DH this is the only major issue I have EVER had with them so no question I’ll stick with them.

  24. same thing Says:

kellyone, do you ride the short yellow bus. It was down for well over 6 hours yesterday. You people that tell us not to whine are truly pieces of work. And yes not everything works perfect, but not everything breaks down everyday around the same time.

  25. konyfero Says:

This is the perfect week to switch to another hoster, but with this problems i can’t leave dreamhost!!! i can’t access to my databases to backup them and switch!!! it’s a nightmare!

  26. Bryan Says:

This is perfect timing… I just convinced my boss yesterday of how wonderful Dreamhost is.

Mind you, I’m not complaining too much. Dreamhost has been a godsend since I started using it.

I won’t be leaving and am still getting my boss’ stuff moved over to it (about 500 websites).

  27. Kevin Says:

Some of these comments are ridiculous. Dreamhost’s actualized downtime over a year is less than 1/10th of one percent. Your bottom line isn’t being affected that much and don’t pretend it is. EVERY host in the world you could switch to is going to have a problem time and again. If you honestly think one of them doesn’t, you are a fool. Quit whining, let them fix it, and if you don’t like - move away. None of the rest of us care to hear how you are going to.

  28. Johnny Says:

you have to be shitting me

  29. Sebastian Hughes Says:

NOT AGAIN. Firstly my site gets taken down for 24 hours due to too much traffic from digg and now 2 days on off downtime and pure slowness.

  30. Dawn Says:

This sucks. I am having problems with a partner that left and started the exact same site as mine, he is trying to take my members and I am desperately trying to keep them. In return NOW I have hours of downtime. I need reliability!!! Good lord.

  31. Jarin Says:

Seriously guys. Give them a break. For the price you pay for Dreamhost, how can you complain? If you want quality hosting then go pay for quality hosting. I, for one, am enjoying my low-cost hosting that is better than most companies that charge twice that rate. I can deal with downtime every now and then.

For those of you that live and breathe your websites, get over it. If you’re absolutely that obsessed with your sites, go move somewhere else. Go buy your own server. Do something. Just stop whining.

  32. val Says:

C’mon guys.. step your game up. What’s up with all this downtime?

This is my second day here and… wow, great service so far (that was a total joke).

  33. Michael Says:

Personally, I’d be happy to pay twice or thrice as much for all the services, disk space and bandwidth that Dreamhost offers, if it meant more reliability. I was wary of how inexpensive Dreamhost is, but it was hard (impossible?) to find another service with all the same specs that wasn’t gobs more expensive. I hope this isn’t par for the course, but I’ve been here only 4 months so can’t make a firm judgement yet, I know shit happens. Dreamhost wouldn’t quote me an uptime guarantee when I was investigating them, but compared their uptime to any major ISP. Is their actual uptime greater than 99.9% like Kevin suggests? That’s just alright from what I understand…it does mean about 3-4 days total of downtime a year, and it’s not the metrics that major ISP’s claim.

  34. Eric Says:

You would think they would have better redundancy. I have been a customer for several years. My only complaint is that their network always appears to be slow.

  35. Gene Says:

Is this the same problem as the “Webmail Down” problem understated (Dreamhost falsely claims that it’s “resolved”) in an adjacent announcement? Since last night I’ve had no email coming in or out regardless of the client I use, which makes me think it’s these vague “Network Problems” rather than anything to do with webmail.

  36. Daniel Says:

This is fast becoming a repeat of last summer. I’ve been telling tech support for over two months that there were larger problems and I keep getting erroneous explanations. Maybe we’ll get the mea culpa from the big chief on the DreamHost blog sooner this summer than last…but I’m not betting on it.

Frankly, I’m getting tired of the run around. If you have a fever for two months and the doctor tells you nothings wrong, its time to find a new doctor…and its time for the doctor to admit he’s a quack.

  37. peedoff Says:

dreamhosts downtime and other problems is terrible i have had an account with lunar pages for 2 years and never have any problems like this, ill be switching all my sites over to them,Goodbye nightmarehost

  38. Cariel Says:

similar network problems that we experienced yesterday
I really would like to know more about what exactly is going on and if this problem will persist. You guys did an amazing job getting it back yesterday, but for everything to fall apart again today?? I don’t understand that. I am in no position to judge since I don’t know what is going on, but I’m fairly certain a number of us would like to have more information on the exact details of these Network Problems.

  39. Siddiqui Says:

I am unable to send many important emails
My mail servers are not responding and the website is coming up as its hosted on a 56k connection :(

Its fine if it comes back up with in few mins cant afford more down time :(

  40. Mark Cohen Says:

You whiners are really starting to bother me.

Two options: First, you can leave. Trust me, nobody will miss you. Not support, not DreamHost, and certainly not us. Two, you can shut up and let support fix it. Amazingly, griping isn’t helping.

Notice that continue to whine was not a listed option.

  41. Jeff Says:

It appears all of our external DNS records no longer exist which means no mail, no website, no nothing. I really wish Dreamhost would post an update, this is really bad.

  42. Damnit Says:

Why do you say griping doesn’t help? Hell they’ve claimed to have solved the problem at least three times now, yet the problem still exists. If nobody was griping they probably would have just said ‘problem solved’ and not batted another eyelash.

  43. Aparatchik Says:

Mark, ironic how the first post on your blog is about you whining…

I’m just ready to get my email now.

  44. *snort* Says:

Ironic that he isn’t whining solely because his site is operational *rolls eyes*

  45. Anonymous Blogger Says:

I can see why people are upset, the server I’m on is totally useless at the moment (except for being a space heater no doubt). I’m sure the load’s due to the network problems (seen it do this before when DH has had network problems, they generally end up having to reboot to clear out the backlog of stuff trying to resolve/etc.) but this is scary:

    19:59:50 up 133 days, 7:10, 6 users, load average: 1016.88, 655.42, 347.75

I’ve never seen load over 1000 before, I’m surprised the server hasn’t melted!

Anyway, now that they say it should be all clear I’ve submitted a ticket with the highest criticality, hopefully they’ll get to it soon as a quick reboot will undoubtedly fix this particular mess.

  46. Damnit Says:

DNS is messed up for a bunch of sites.

  47. Tycho van Dijk Says:

Ok guy’s at Dreamhost, I’m with you !

Those who complain should try another hosting company, you will be back here in a matter of days ;-))

I know the DH team does all it can to solve this issues asap so shut-up or leave ! (and prepare to come back with your tail low)

No other hosting service I know (and I tried a some…) is coming close to DreamHost service !

    Tycho

  48. Jeff Says:

Last update said DNS is up and running but it is not for our domain. Anyone else still having this problem?

  49. Johnny Says:

    still not working!

  50. Johnny Says:

I’m having same issues. No web mail, e mail or website

  51. Romes Says:

I can’t figure out who’s more annoying… the people whining, or the people whining about the whiners.

I lied, I can totally figure it out: it’s the latter.

If you don’t like it, don’t click the “comments” button for a downtime issue. What did you expect? “Oh, Dreamhost, how I love thee! Your downtime makes my heart frolick in a meadow of happy metaphors.”

    Seriously guys… You. are. lame.

  52. Kurt Says:

I’m getting the same thing as Jeff, no website, mail, etc. I can understand the lack of mail, but no redundancy of the website seems a bit lame. I couldn’t get away with that at my job.

That being said, I have been with Dreamhost for about 2 1/2 years, and appreciate the available tools at a reasonable cost. Now spam, that’s another story ….

  53. buzzdroid Says:

I tell you guys to bitch about it at mybiggestcomplaint.com but we’re dumping in and out too!

  54. kirk Says:

I’ve been with Dreamhost for over 7 years. They have always had a very good performance record….UNTIL NOW. During the last 30 days, my sites have been down exponentially more often than ever before. This does not bode for a good projection at all, and for the first time, I am actually seeking another hosting company. I’m not usually a “whiner”, but I feel that this kind of report should be posted publicly.

  55. steve Says:

I have two host space. Dreamhost and this one http://www.site5.com/in.php?id=38670

I have not had one single problem with site5.

I have been down more than up with dreamhost. Now I have signed up another site5 account and I am done with Dreamhost. I have a Photo Lab with a large online ordering system. Its unacceptable that my customers can’t place their order’s online. I have lost about $1000 a day for the past 2 days.

  56. garry Says:

dreamhost server down? great! now I can have my life back.

  57. Dennis Says:

Still no web site, mail, etc. and it’s almost noon here, on the day after…

  58. Dan Says:

This is still an issue… sigh.

Can the severity please be bumped up?

This is not severity = low.

  59. bob cobb Says:

Low severity?? My site has been down for 5 hours atleast again today :(

  60. billy Says:

    wha? gayness. total gayness.

  61. Keith Martin Says:

My key site and a couple of others have been down for not far off 24 hours now. This is really quite extraordinary.

  62. bob cobb Says:

I have another host, is there an easy way for me to set up a mirror of my wordpress site over there so my site will still work when dreamhost has a problem?

  63. Nigerian Scam Baiter Says:

This is stupid, I have recommended dreamhost many times to so many people, now those people are complaining to me about dreamhost’s service. Whatever its cool, all those people are coming to me for help switching them to a new hosting plan, I’ve already made $1690 for today just for people paying me to move their site over, and the day hasn’t even ended yet.

If routers or switches or whatever is causing the problem, with the amount of money you guys are making, you should be able to buy extra of those items and swap them out when one goes wrong, its not that difficult. Those that say it is difficult to maintain a hosting company blah blah don’t understand that this shit has been down for like 3 days now.

  64. Nigerian Scam Baiter Says:

Oh and its also funny how dreamhost asks for more money charging more shit when it comes time to close the accounts. Well the amounts due can just sit there, who cares. We are not paying them shit.

  65. Chuck Says:

Severity: Low? Get your priorities right.

  66. Darrin Says:

FWIW, http://www.servepath.com/ is the host of this page :)

  67. Q Says:

Yeah, I feel like Kirk. Been with Dreamhost for 7 years myself. The sites I run don’t ask for much, and one of the clients I referred actually does pay a fair amount for the service. But email has been a disaster. DNS just doesn’t seem to work right. And uptime has been getting… bad. I honestly cant even say I remember my site at dreamhost EVER going down until 2 years ago. It’s just gotten worse over time. I don’t ask for much. My websites are mostly static with a little cgi and more recently small database interaction. But what I need the absolute MOST is reliability. It’s just not there anymore. Not that I’m in a rush to spend money but if spending a bit more at a host with half of the features gets me uptime then that’s where I will go. Or am going I should say. Been fun though.

    Network Problems Continues

  69. upparoom2002 Says:

looks like it started right back up again. slow down, mysql errors, some sites down.

I’m losing money every time dreamhost goes down, which is happening more and more often.

  70. mark Says:

My site was up and now it’s back down again. At this time: it’s 5pm pacific. Will dreamhost be going home for the weekend? Is this really ‘resolved’ as it states at the top of the page?

I’ve also had an accout with lunarpages for the past 4 years. And they never had this problem (not 3 days of problems).

I hope dreamhosts gets some smart folks to figure this out fast becasue it’s costing me money.

  71. Henrik Says:

    Thank you mr Wiggum :-P
