RESOLVED Webmail downtime

The admins are investigating a mysql issue with webmail which is causing downtime. We are already on the case and it will be fixed up shortly. If any further information becomes available we will update this post, so check back for updates.

Update: The issues have been resolved and webmail is working normally again.

Addendum: We apologize for the recurring issues with webmail this week - it was a case of the database machine used for webmail running out of memory however it is not underpowered in that respect so unfortunately simply throwing more hardware at the problem will not make it go away. Our database expert has installed some additional logging tools and is keeping a close eye on that machine so that he can catch and correct the source of the issue.

4th day in a row of outages and interrupted services. When is this going to end!

2. continuum Says:

At least they’re working on it… remember Leafycaust!

3. Jared Says:

Hah, that’s why I switched. Tooo much downtime. But, that’s what you get for the money you pay.
I only use Dreamhost for off-server backups since they guarantee the data is safe.

4. John Says:

Maybe less time “livin’ it up” and more time doing maintenance/upgrades?

5. andi Says:

While I’ve been quite pleased with DH for years now and I’m not ragequitting, I do hope that some details about the recent outages will be forthcoming soon — and hopefully some plan to prevent this stuff from happening again any time soon?… Thanks guys.

6. Sean Says:

This is causing a big issue for our Laptop Warriors in the field. We need reliable web-based mail.

7. S.Williams Says:

This is beyond ridiculous. Not only can I not access my email, but I know that several test emails that were sent to my acount never arrived. While I understand that no technology is perfect, this many days in a row with outages and downtime is simply unacceptable. And, with the same problems happening this many days in a row, I think Dreamhost has an incredible amount of nerve calling the severity “medium”.

8. Adam Says:

We’ll be leaving dreamhost soon if this continues. I’ve never had any of these issues with lunarpages…

9. E. Blackwell Says:

I hope the issue can be resolved soon, I’m most curious about the Root Cause of this issue.

10. Nate Says:

S. Williams, I’ve also confirmed over the last couple days that some of my email sent form dream host is getting lost and never arriving.

11. Sam Says:

Tooo much downtime is right.
My previous server didn’t go more than ten days (in eleven months) without an issue.
Booo, DreamHost, boooo!

12. T.O Says:

I’m running a forum and it’s insane… I just can’t deal with this. I guess I’m off to find yet another hosting company. Anyone suggest someone???

13. Ken Says:

Has the webmail been down a few times earlier this week? Because if it has, then that may explain why this one company was pissed at me for bitching at them for not sending me a responce in time when they claimed that they had… :(

14. continuum Says:
We’ll be leaving dreamhost soon if this continues. I’ve never had any of these issues with lunarpages…
stick with any host long enough… :scared:

15. bdrum1 Says:

This is BS! We’ve had several days of sketchy email service, and it seems that this happens more often now. We can’t log in to our inbox and we loose lots of emails, but there never seems to be issues getting an invoice to my inbox for crappy services. We’re in the middle of upgrading/changing much of our infrastructure in our office so I am sure Dreamhost will be on the chopping block too!

16. K Says:

Thank you, I seem to be fixed already. :) *gives some love admidst all the complaints*

17. Greenman Says:

I’ve been here less than a year. I’ve only found one other host that tops Dreamhost for everything except cost. (I’m not going to say, because I’m not advertising.) Bet on it: other hosts go through the same stuff, sometimes for days. They’ll figure it out. There are truly a lot worse places to be hosted, and I’ve been with many of them.

If you can’t use webmail, consider using pine or mutt through secure shell temporarily. Theyr’e clunky, but they work.

Looks like it’s back up though!

18. Josh Says:

Webmail interface is loading now, I can receive e-mail, but not send. Patience . . . waning . . .
Error received on every send attempt is:

ERROR:
Message not sent. Server replied:

Connection refused
111 Can’t open SMTP stream.

19. Kamil Says:

Can access IMAP box, but problems seem to still be there in accessing SMTP.

I’m also not getting new mail from external sources.

Four days in a row now… it’s a pretty good thing I only spent $20 on DH so far…

20. Nate Says:

You guys need to change your main web page from “living it up” to “seriously pissing off our customers”.

21. Dana Says:

Not resolved. It *was* working, but now this:

Error connecting to IMAP server: localhost.
111 : Connection refused

22. steve Says:

I’ve dealt with other hosts who’s service/communication was terrible. At least you guys tell us what’s going on and actually fix the problems. Keep up the great work!

23. Dave Says:

Have you ever had a day without issues? Just curious. Seems like EVERY DAY. Seriously. I’m off to Media Temple anyhow. You guys really do suck.

24. Whereforartthyemail? Says:

Oh goodie, another day with email not working. I can only hope Friday will hold more outages.

Also glad I signed a client up for service today. This will make a great impression. “I got you all set up for email but unfortunately you can’t check it because everyone is too busy taking random snapshots of themselves and their uber-coolness and putting them on the front door of this site.”

25. ChickenHead Says:

Hmmm….

>>>> Maybe less time “livin’ it up” and more time doing maintenance/upgrades?

Hmmm….

>>>> We’ll be leaving dreamhost soon if this continues. I’ve never had any of these issues with…

Hmmm….

>>>> I only use Dreamhost for off-server backups

Hmmm….

Leaves are falling all around, Its time I was on my way.
Thanks to you, Im much obliged For such a pleasant stay.

But now its time for me to go, The autumn moon lights my way.
For now I smell the rain, And with it pain, And its headed my way.
Ah, sometimes ***I grow so tired***, But I know Ive got one thing I got to do,

Ramble on….

DOWNTIME IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!

26. JPW Says:

The status report says Squirrel Mail is now working (at 11:05 AM PDT) but IT IS NOT. I cannot access my email. When is Dreamhost going to get it right????

27. Sean Says:

Get a grip guys. Unless you want to pay $383+ per month ($4,596/year) for RackSpace you are going to have some downtime. Over the course of two years I’ve only experienced maybe — and I don’t even think it’s been that much — a total of 24 hours of downtime including yesterday’s downtime. That’s only .01% downtime or 99.99% uptime for two years. What more to you want for 7 bucks a month?

You will experience these types of problems with EVERY other low cost web host. And if you think you can do better start your own hosting company! When you have 100% uptime for two years call me and then I’ll eat crow!

28. Scott Says:

And it’s confirmed that e-mail sent to webmail addresses over the last few days never came through? Great…

29. Mike Says:

Say it with me again people…run your email though Google…

30. Volt Says:

Folks, don’t label this issue resolved when it clearly isn’t Webmail is definitely down right now.

31. matt Says:

Everyone complaining here is an idiot. Webmail is down, not email. Install your own webmail program (Roundcube is excellent) or use Outlook or Thunderbird. Mail is working as normal, but the web-based interface is not.

Also, if anyone is having trouble with missing email, create a webmaster@yoursite.com and a postmaster@yoursite.com. If you don’t have them, many email providers (especially AOL) will just delete them.

32. Richie Says:

I’ve used DH for over 3 years and even with the ocassional downtime, I do have to say its been great having them as my hosting service. The monthly fees are insanely low, taking into account the virtually unlimited domains and email offered. I can set up and configure a new domain, add or delete email addresses, etc. at any time day or night I want. You want bigger more potentially reliable service? Then pay per domain hosted with network solutions etc. Then see how much flexibility you get for your buck. I run 2 very active sites here on DH and 2 blogs as well, and a total of 12 email addresses, with minimal loss or inconvenience over the years.

33. Red Volta Says:

I too have experienced the ineptness of many other web hosts. I have tried dozens and always have come back to Dreamhost over the years. There has not been 1 single host that I have tried that has not had downtime at one time or another. Dreamhost happens to be great at communicating the issues though. It is great to have people on the issues when they happen and communicating to us. Sure it hurts when things are down…and if you are loosing money when it happens, as so many people here claim, then the money you rake in from your business should go back into your business and upgrade your $8 account to a dedicated server. Those who ‘rely completely’ on a shared hosting account for their living (who don’t expect downtime) should probably not be owning a business. And as Matt says, if you don’t like Squirrelmail, load your own app. I have not, nor ever have been, a fan of Squrrelmail,,,do something about it if you don’t like it. Dreamhost gives you the access to do it.

34. Howard Pullman Says:

“Our database expert has installed some additional logging tools and is keeping a close eye on that machine so that he can catch and correct the source of the issue.”

Yeah, I’m sure that is going to fix it. I’m sure that there will be no more database outages or slowness for the first time in over two years. Your database expert sucks balls. I’m sick of your database expert. How about you hire some competent people over there? Maybe someone with a college degree or some real experience working on this stuff.

Your database is god-awful and is the worst part of Dreamhost.

p.s. I still like Dreamhost. But damn, get your shit together and stop acting like amateurs.

35. Andy Huang Says:

Where do I report panel outage again?

36. josemaX Says:

And broken again….

ERROR: Respuesta IMAP desconocida. (something like Unknown IMAP response)
Consulta: FETCH 1:* (FLAGS UID RFC822.SIZE INTERNALDATE BODY.PEEK[HEADER.FIELDS (Date To Cc From Subject X-Priority Importance Priority Content-Type)])
El servidor respondió: (Server answered…)

No more.

37. fdasfdsa Says:

Problems on zeus - website outage

38. michaelj Says:

It’s now 2:05pm PST. The entry says Resolved, but it definitely ain’t. Trouble logging in to Squirrel Mail, messages disappeared when I moved them from quarantine to Inbox.
An update from DH on the problem is definitely in order!

39. Turtle Says:

Quote: “Everyone complaining here is an idiot. Webmail is down, not email. Install your own webmail program (Roundcube is excellent) or use Outlook or Thunderbird. Mail is working as normal, but the web-based interface is not.”

Actually, Outlook and Outlook Express are also having sporadic connection issues. Sorry. As an idiot, I had to chip in.

40. qasr Says:

Yep, broken again. :(

41. Chris Says:

It doesn’t seem to be resolved. It’s either down or slow as snot right now.

42. Scott Says:

I am using Thunderbird and it is not working. Definitely still down. Issue is not resolve. This has been several days in a row now with this problem. Please resolve!!!!

43. xynny Says:

not just webmail is down, my website is down again for the third day in a row now. something is seriously wrong with their entire infrastructure.

44. JT Says:

Just another report–FTP no longer working on my sites, either through the panel or a desktop client.

I’ve been pretty happy with Dreamhost despite the occasional drops, but I agree with other posters who have called attention to the Dreamhost.com pictures of employees partying. It doesn’t exactly generate goodwill during downtimes–marketing should rethink the homepage, pronto.

45. Steve Says:

My mail is up and down too. COMON…time to look for another provider.

46. Pandrake Says:

Email intermittent. Not down, just won’t do webmail every time. Sometimes POP/IMAP doesn’t work, most time it does (but then I use a real light POP client that only reads subjects and dates, there may be other issues with the overhead Outlook or Thunderbird brings to the equation).

Definately seems to be related to the MySQL problem (new or of yesterday), as on some occasions my web page won’t load the dynamic content generated with a CMS - tho the static content loads fine after timing out, trying to fetch the dynamic content. My sites are not slow - MySQL is not working. When it is, sites and webmail are quick as ever.

47. Jeff Kujath Says:

All my sites are experiencing intermittent connectivity issues (and database issues) today (since around 1:30pm PST).
I can’t get to my web panel to report the issue either.

I would hope that Dreamhost could update the status page to identify what problems are currently happening.

48. Robert Says:

Can’t get to the freaking panel to complain about how slow the panel is.

49. dave Says:

How is the problem marked as resolved when there are still a lot of people that can not access webmail! I need to get work done and this is totally not cool. Get you crap together DreamHost! I pay for this stuff and I expect it to work.

50. JT Says:

The other interesting thing about the panel being down is that my access to the support interface is broken too, which leaves no option to inform Dreamhost support of the break than to post here–which is, of course, “not a way to contact DreamHost,” and so it remains officially “resolved.”

Ceci n’est pas une crash!

51. michaelj Says:

OK, webmail is working. Now can I please ftp to my site?

Also, speaking as one “idiot” who uses webmail: That’s the only way I can check the Junk Mail folder, which often contains legit emails. Pardon me, but some of us have good reasons for using webmail in addition to our regular email client. Anyone ever heard of public computers? I use ‘em when I don’t have my laptop with me.

52. Moises Says:

Webmail is down again

53. Not Happy Says:

And yet again, here we are today with another email problem. Almost every single day I have email issues!! I’m glad I’m not counting on my website being up all the time. Dreamhost seems to be getting worse by the day. Time to find another service.

54. Gene Says:

Not resolved.

55. Gene Says:

This announcement is incorrectly titled to imply that only webmail is down. At least in my case, email itself is completely down—no third-party client or system can retrieve messages from mail.mysite.ext. Mail sent from other addresses bounce back. if the problem were restricted to webmail it would be far less aggregious.

Please correct your announcement to reflect the actual situation.

56. fourwding Says:

mail is still a problem for me.

all my web sites are also failing. I guess anything that uses mysql (hmmm, isn’t that everything these days!)

57. Sean Says:

Part of the problem is people auto checking their email every few minutes. I use to have problems until I set an interval of 1 hour instead of every few minutes. You know what, not only did it solve some of my mail issues I actually get work done. Imagine that.

@ fourwding Mail doesn’t use MSQL.
@Gene. These announcements are for system wide problems not individual server problems. If you are having problems outside the ’system wide’ problem then turn in a notice.
@Not Happy Says; I haven’t had any mail problems except for 10 to 15 minutes when I couldn’t send via SMTP. But then that’s why I have my own backup of Gmail.

58. Lynnwood Says:

It appears to me that webmail is STILL flaky on the 17th. Sometimes its working but it is often still not responding.

59. ali Says:

Webmail is down again :S:S:S

60. 泰拳 Says:

mail is still a problem for me. are you resolved?
