DreamHostStatus.com Back up!
The secondary network DreamHostStatus.com (this site!) is hosted on was saturated due to a large increase in DNS traffic. After working with our provider for a few hours we’ve got it back up and we’re working to make sure the network saturation does not return.
Now to explain the DNS Outage itself.

My site has been inaccessible since about 9 this morning and I still can’t get mail service or display anything in my website. Does it work for you?
August 17th, 2007 at 12:44 pm
Always and forever until next time, eh?
(Don’t mind me, I’m just bitter… I’m still waiting for mine to come back.)
August 17th, 2007 at 12:47 pm
Paul & Keith - I can’t access your sites so the DNS must still be propagating. All mine seem to be working (thanks!).

The best part was when dreamhoststatus.com went down.
And stayed down.
Classic.
August 17th, 2007 at 12:51 pm
Yea here’s hoping that the next few months will have less excitement.
August 17th, 2007 at 12:53 pm
My website site is still DOWN.
http://www.thinkrichsoftware.com/
And my mailbox is also down.
Please let me know when it will back up.
Thanks,
Mark

You guys have been fairly trouble free in the last 6 months, which was wonderful. I then started referring people to you once again. Please fix these problems quickly, don’t drag my name in the mud!
My sites are all still down too…
August 17th, 2007 at 12:54 pm
Out of my 15 sites with DH, I am only having DNS Problems with one. But since this is my first outage in almost 18 months, I think the DH guys do a good job

mailbox has returned to its usual flow of spam, thanks dreamhost!
out of curiousity what happened to mail sent during this window, would it have bounced immediately?
August 17th, 2007 at 12:56 pm
My site (including email) has been down all day. Any chance of a fix soon?
August 17th, 2007 at 12:57 pm
Ack - everything is back up but I still don’t have any emails that were sent to me in the last 24 hours….
August 17th, 2007 at 1:03 pm
My main domain is dead, but the backup domain that “mirrors” that domain works just fine, and is much faster than usual.
That means my web and SQL servers work great, but it also means only I can get to those servers, because none of my users know anything about the mirror domain. *sigh*
This really has been three bad days for Dreamhost AND their customers. It’s not enough to make me search for new hosting, because Dreamhost is still very good for the price, but is does upset me as a provider of services to my users. :o(
I’m sure the server guys are working their butts off, I wish them well.

Perhaps its a wild guess, but downtime is probably the #1 reason for people leaving dreamhost out of frustration. Downtime should be measured in seconds, not hours.
It should be much cheaper keeping a dreamhost subscriber happy than adding a new one. So it seems that more investment should be made into support. Whether that’s buy more support services from your hardware vendors, or hiring the right people internally.
Just a thought. I really dig dreamhost, but I can’t have my boss yelling at me because servers are down.
August 17th, 2007 at 1:14 pm
Tomas, you’ve summed up my feelings and position very well. DH is still very good for the price, and I’ve always found the support to be exceptionally responsive. (This time around I haven’t tried to get a personal response because I know they’ll be *rather* busy just now…)
Good luck. I’ll keep practising my deep breathing and cross my fingers even harder.

Maybe I should have crossed my fingers harder in the first place… my main site (only) is back. Phew! I hope everyone else is too, or at least will be very soon.

I just joined dreamhost 2 days ago… to my surprise both days are down lol, I already switched to a new host.

Anyone having issues with larger emails? My site is down, but email seems to be working — mostly. Larger emails (over 100kb) are not getting through from the net. They come through fine from other dreamhost servers. Anyone having that issue?

E-mail is down again! This is the 4th timein 3 days - what gives?!

Why the heck is dreamhoststatus.com hosted on the same network as the rest of the dreamhost stuff? I couldn’t get information about the outage at certain times because none of the DH resources (incl. this) worked. Why not host dreamhoststatus.com somewhere else? Heck, even a Geocities page would be more useful during episodes like this.
August 17th, 2007 at 8:33 pm
I’d like to echo some of the sentiments others have expressed regarding inaccessibility of dreamhoststatus.com. One of the reasons I’m more willing to tolerate outages with Dreamhost than I would be with other hosts is the generally transparency of the support process. If I find I can’t access my site, I can be satisfied that someone it aware of the problem and is working to fix it just by checking dreamhoststatus.com.
Given the importance of dreamhoststatus.com as a source of information for all users in the event of an outage, I would like to recommend that you host it not simply on ‘another network’ within the same data center but instead with an entirely separate hosting provider (someone who will give you 20MB of space for $100 a month, but guarantee 99.999% availibility). Or, as Hank suggested, setup a free Geocities account and post information there.

My site back now…..
lost $30 yesterday….
that’s big money in my country
hope never happen again…

I’d also like you to address the dreamhoststatus.com problems. As I recall, you set this up after a major outage as a means of communicating system status. Up until recently, it’s worked okay. However, for this most recent issue, weaknesses were exposed in both the DNS issues affecting resolution to dreamhoststatus.com and its the database powering the “blog” being inaccessible from dreamhoststatus.com.
What did you learn and what will you be doing about it in the future?

Thank you for the useful informations. I really enjoyed reading all of your posts. It?s interesting to read ideas, and observations from someone else?s point of view? makes you think more. So please keep up the great work. Best regards…

When I saw Dreamhoststatus was down, I figured it would be tough going, so I spent the next six hours browsing some site called “I Can Has Cheezburger.” I told everyone I was investigating solutions at the time. Father, is there hope for my sinner’s soul?
September 20th, 2007 at 2:28 am
Good that my DNS already did cached IPs of my pages, I did not noticed it.

I’m sure I’ve seen that I CAN HAZ CHEEZBURGER site around – I think they have a blog at wordpress. They’re always updated. I think they must be pretty popular.
I actually remember the phrase ‘I can haz Cheezburger’ from a veggietales episode. Those who don’t know Veggietales have seriously missed out.
Maybe the phrase comes from there… it was quite a funny song. Even in my twenties, those kids programs like VeggieTales are still the best!
