24 hours later still the same problems and indeed they are blaming it to other people! :-(

    @still off-line

I asked them many times but they don’t. Its a shame!

This is getting a little out of hand, now I can’t access pop3 mail servers.

    Mensje Says:

And again they are blaming someone else:

Well, if you are using clamato.dreamhost.com as the hostname for accessing FTP, it’s probably taking a different
route to the server, and skipping the bad hop. I wish there were something we could do about this, we do care, but
we have no control over it, unfortunately.

The problems began by the networking-problems not ba a bat hop.

    This is fun:

When I ping tea.dreamhost.com, the server on which my website is located, I get an average ping of 182ms. When I ping the domain of my website directly I get an average of 164ms. Again, I live in Germany and I can reach my sites without problem. But this difference in ping time is very strange.

So I did a traceroute to my domain:

    1 1 ms 1 ms 1 ms localhost [192.168.1.1]
    2 10 ms 9 ms 11 ms dslb-084-061-000-001.pools.arcor-ip.net [84.61.0.1]

    Shaun Belcher Says:

I have just managed to read some of the info. at dreamhost blog. It a wonder following the DNS that ate itself routines that been happening that the DH guys got anything going..thanks for trying guys…

I think ( and a guy called Robert who on help desk at DH ..cheers…seems to agree ) that European problems may be being compounded because after DNS lost / changed a crap ISP like mine ( Orange fr) helps the process along by not updating dns often enough and caching everything throughput on ISP…not sure for certain BUT I called friends in Uk in same city here and they (different ISP’s) are getting my websites loud and clear SO IT NOT DH..

( it NOT my pc dns I flushed until i could flush no more and all TCP settings tweaked and correct)

DH may have started ball rolling with initial outage and dns problems but then our beautiful ISP cache monsters seem to be compounding the error…so blame where blame due?

If I wrong shoot me down in flames but I cannot believe this all DH fault….

I getting intermittent access now and webmail gone again….my ISP looks guilty…

Any other Brits having problems? Especially Orange ‘non-users’ like me?:-)

  21. 171
    Term Says:

Damn if you think the service is THAT bad then move. I for one think DH is doing a great job, i’ve had my share of hosts and NOONE have had as few problems as DH. If you run such a big operation you’re doomed to have some problems. Fortunately they are very good at fixing them. And i read that someone said they should use more money on updates… Well unless you’ve got an internal source i bet they do updates all the time. with all plans going up at least 1 gb / week they gotta buy new servers all the time. So give them a break and sit back and relax. You raging on doesn’t stop the problems any faster..

The complete ignorance of many of the posters above is not too surprising considering the state of American society and the USA education system, but what a loathsome method of self-expression when all you can do to say how you feel is use unnecessary expletives in badly constructed and semi-literate rants. Doesn’t any average Joe or Joanne in America have the capacity to express themselves articulately in decent English anymore?
Your ignorance is such that I wonder how you ever managed to build or run a website.
As to Dreamhost, I think it is a simple matter of fact that their reliability is much lower than other hosts, and since I have worked now or in the past with IPowerweb, GoDaddy, Yahoo, Lunarpages, and Europeregistry, I speak from knowledge.
If you don’t like DH and what it offers, instead of telling then they are shit and should fuck off, why don’t you take your own advice and go somewhere else?

    James Says:

Hmm, seems to me the only one in a position to do anything about anything (dreamhost) is the one blaming other people (globalcrossing) even though dreamhost
are a paying customer of globalcrossing’s. That’s not 6 steps removed, they have a unique, paying-money, relationship with globalcrossing.

You have a unique, paying money, relationship with Dreamhost, but when their shit breaks, there’s nothing you can do until the people who actually have access to the broken/malfunctioning equipment (Dreamhost) actually get to fixing it. It’s no different between Dreamhost and Globalcrossing. However, coming back every couple of minutes to post an update that basicly says ‘We’re still waiting’ is not getting the issue fixed. Obviously, they know it’s happening. And, also obviously, they’ve performed the same multiple traceroutes as anyone here is capable of doing. Which means they more than likely saw the same packet stream termination points. And, just to prove I’m not pulling something out of my ass, my traceroute results from the DH server I’m using to one of the non-US hosts having issues that’s already been varified in the comments.

Performance is fine through the DN end of Globalcrossing’s network, then starts sucking as soon as it reaches opentransit.net. So, that means two things. DH can’t do a whole hell of a lot about it except scream at their hosts, much like you’re having fun screaming at yours, and you really neither have nor need any proof whether they’re doing that or not. And, DH is *probably* not the only one being affected by it. If it goes through *.lax.gblx.net, it’s probably being suckified. So, yell at Global Crossing. Yell at opentransit.net. Yell at AOL if it makes you feel better–I’m still convinced 95% of the internet’s problems can probably be traced back to them anyway. But, surprisingly or not, this is actually something DH had very little if anything to do with breaking. And if you’re still gonna say otherwise, then I’m sorry, but your internet usage license should be revoked for life.

Funny how this turned into a webhosting forum. If you’re looking for hosting, please turn to Webhostingtalk or some other board.

Tried Site5.com and they have a good deal running atm, but DH still has the better panel.. shame the network sucks so badly now. Ended up moving to MediaTemple grid servers which so far seem very good. Only have a couple of sites left at DH and they will be gone soon too. Sorry DH, I like the idea of owner-operator and the happy-whatever-team etc, but with the HUGE customer base and thus large amount of money pouring in, the performance is a long way from being acceptable… in fact it’s becoming dismal. Bye.

    WOOF!

  43. 193
    Red Volta Says:

Well, I have not been experiencing the web site downtime that anyone here has been experiencing since the problems last week. I have monitoring software that hits several pages of my website every 2 mins and if it skips a beat, I am notified by email (to several email addresses including outside of Dreamhost) as well as a text message to my cell. I have only experienced 1 notification in the past week since everything happened and was well within 2 minutes as the next monitoring interval recorded my site being back up…so that could have been my “own” internet connection that blipped and not Dreamhost.

I do not use email through Dreamhost…I run my own business and rely on a more robust solution. as a business owner, to me, whining is unacceptable coming from an owner…if you have a problem, deal with it, make smart business decisions, and move on. Email is important to me as a business and just do not see the logic in relying on “any” shared hosting solution as the “potential” for frequent downtime is unacceptable. I have no need, yet, to move to dedicated hosting, but the minute my business completely relies upon my website, you can bet I will move to a dedicated server. Plus, I’d rather not have all my eggs in one basket.

In any case, I have had a great experience with Dreamhost in my 10 years with their hosting. Have tried several others in that time frame and have not yet had any quite match up to Dreamhost. Love the admin panel. Love the complete control I have with the multiple domains I host at DH. Not a fan of Squirrelmail.

The moral of the story, if you run your own business or make your living from your website, you should be practicing good business sense and not put all your eggs in 1 basket and skimp your way along. Invest in the functions of your business that require high-availability.

I will be staying with DH. The fact they communicate so readily is refreshing. Plus, I have not had near the problems reported by people on this board.

Good luck to all of the ones leaving. However, why do people feel the need to try and pull business away from DH using their own forums? If you want to leave, just leave. Bye. See ya. This makes me wonder if these people are just so immature they have no control over their emotions and actions as a result…or they are working for the competition and/or have an agenda to make money from referrals. Believe some of these people here with a grain of salt.

    Good luck all!

“My website is up & running!”. This kind of news unfortunately seems too small a spark of light amidst all of the effort the DreamTeam is putting in getting network problems resolved. I admire DH for their being straightforward. They do not come up with cover-ups. They are honest. And that, my friends, deserves to be applauded for.

Well, if a website or some emails do not work, so what? In the Medieval ages so many messengers’ horses fell down in the forest while trying to deliver a scroll of parchment from one castle to the other. Nowadays it has become all too easy to communicate. We are spoilt.

Half a century ago it was the Remington typewriter that did it all. And guess what when there was no carbon paper? Simply type it again. No one complained.

And now, because it has become all way too easy to convey information from A to B, oh boy, the slightest glitch and the whole community gets upset. Come on folks, try the good old typewriter, or write by hand, and feel what it was before the computer age.

So after all it is not that bad. And as far as DreamHost is concerned, they do a much better job than riding papyrus scrolls. Besides, rather than posting negative feedback, why don’t we try to encourage these guys? We all are one big familiy, making up the internet. So keep it a nice place, also from the social perspective.

    Hawg, I have spoken.

I’m having a lot of 503 errors (server busy) with only 20% of normal visits… I’ve used this tool: http://www.octagate.com/service/SiteTimer/ and I’ve seen that connection time is very sloooow…

I hope it can be fixed soon.
