RESOLVED Major Network Outage

Posted (August 29th, 2007 at 4:06 pm PST) by JamesH

It seems our core router is having some major issues right now. We’ve got admins working on this and will post more info when we have it.

Update 4:12pm by Jamesh: The networking issue seems to be resolved, the outage should have only been for fifteen minutes or less. There are still some servers that may need attention, so please continue to wait to contact support if you’re having trouble.

Update 4:26pm by Jamesh: All webservers appear to have recovered gracefully, we all apologize for the outage.

Whew… I thought I broke my site!

YOU SUCK!!!

“Home Depo, you can do it! We can’t help!” :P

hahaha, I was just waiting for a message to appear here!
*waits*

More and more from the failing Dreamhost. Id almost rather use AOL!

Again!?

Perhaps a little compensation this time?

this is the best place to hang out.

Never ceases to amaze me when DreamSuck goes down… What a shame, and to think, people actually beleive the hype that they are cheap AND have good service.

No, Just cheap.

So, “only” i cant view my website.

Duct-Tape fixes everything :)

This has officially reached severity level ridiculous.

In the words of Ron white “Put on the damn helmet.”

Our flood of comments alone will problem shut down the server again

Dang, right in the middle of a blog post, too.

Take your time and fix it right, guys! :)

“But I ain’t mad; it’s all right…” — Will Smith, Independence Day.

Come on guys, I can understand once or twice but this crap happens at least once a week

Maybe you guys should only posting when everything’s working… ’cause lord knows that’s the exception lately.

time to look for a new host

With all the router problems I would guess Circuit City linksys?

It does seem like we’re having trouble maintaining a good, solid 70% uptime… :-]

Hmm….funny though, dreamhost.com is still running like a champ. Hey Dreamhost, what hosting provider do you use? I’ll take it.

I just realized that, whenever DH has trouble and we all come here to [s]complain[s] be supportive, you essentially get a bunch of people together who were in the middle of work. Of course, not everyone is in europe, but for those of us who are… we suck for working this late at night!

Damn, I’m in the wrong business. Why didn’t I think of taking people’s money and then never offering them service!!

I guess im going to change to another hosting, this is ridiculous, seriusly. All my clients are desperate.

man, my first day in dreamhost and I get this?

Why don’t you bozo’s give them a break? Don’t you have enough sense to realize that when they are down they are scrambling to fix it?

Don’t you have enough sense to go somewhere else if you don’t like it?

Sheesh, put on your big girl panties and deal with it! Who in their right mind is going to use a discount 7 bucks a month hosting service for “mission critical” applications anyway? Anyone foolish enough to do this deserves to have their sites down! Maybe they’ll loose their jobs and someone with a half brain’s worth of intelligance will come along and fill the position.

As for me? Keep up the good work boys, I’m sure it’ll only be down a little while.

My site is up again…. Why dreamhoststatus is ever online? omg

Back for me - later suckers!

you have got to be kidding…..this better we resolved quick….this is bs.

haha, I can’t believe all the whinning that goes on in these things. This is not a software or server config issue. These are hardware issues. I for one hope dreamhost calls cisco and tells them to replace there routers with good ones. However, failures are bound to happen. I know this is becoming back to back, but what can you do when you have hardware failure?

so lets give dreamhost a little slack here.

The weird thing to me is, Dreamhost support always seems so conscientious, but its uptime always seems so bad. I’ve been with them for 3-4 years now, and it’s been this way for a long time.

perhaps we should find out where dreamhost host this status page, it seems to be up a lot more than they do!

I know what you mean Silveira, my first day too, I thought I had broken some code at first case nothing would load :-p hahaha

You guys need something higher than “high” severity, like “OMG WE’RE GONNA DIE!”.

Besides that thanks for at least keeping us in the loop. How long till you just chuck the problematic routers and replace them? heh

I see Dreamhost.com and dreamhoststatus.com are still up, I wonder if they are using old hardware. Seriously Myspace has gotten to the point of being more reliable.

I can’t believe all this negativity from everyone. It’s pretty fucking sad, Dreamhost does what it is supposed to to, unforeseeable downtime is always a burden, but they are dealing with it the best they can. DH knows they’ll have bitch ass customers complaining and will likely feed you a bandwidth increase pie to shut you the hell up.

I hope you don’t treat your waiters and waitresses like you treat dreamhost. Assholes.

for what it’s worth, it’s over 100 degrees in LA today. lots of power problems around. not sure if that’s the issue, but let’s give them a break.

damn, i guess our comment party is over. see you guys next week.

Over my ass.

Irregardless of hardware issues, they should have enough redundant equipment to deal with this. I cant even believe that they have this many cisco failures…..

@Ricky, I for one think that the Dreamhost folks are great and that hardware failures occur and that’s a fact of life, but I would think you could understand people’s frustration. They didn’t sign up to have half-the-time Web hosting for $7 a month. Who would? (Well, I guess I would, since none of my sites are ‘mission critical.’ :-] ) Still, their support response to every small issue I’ve had has been speedy and competent, so I’m confident that they’re working in good faith to keep this stuff working as best they can.

give them a break ?

I’ve test several hosting site ping, dreamhost is the baddest one.
Downtime is always high in summer, but I will move by the end of the year too.
Why don’t you bozo’s give them a break? Don’t you have enough sense to realize that when they are down they are scrambling to fix it?
The issue is, they’ve been having these sorts of problems for YEARS. They still can’t get their network to stay up as much as most of their peers are able to.

And, yes, I am in the process of finding another host. I’ve got a decade’s worth of stuff configured on here, so it will take enough time I’m very carefully choosing my next host.

Back up, Thanks DH!

back up here, wtg guys.

Wow, back up after what? Two whole minutes of downtime? I guess all you whiners can now drift back to your “OMG! Look at me! I’ve got a web page with a stupid blog on it!”…er….I mean, your thousands and thousands of customers that you choose to host on a discount web hosting service!

Use this uptime to get a rectocranial extraction guys! Stop popping pimples and playing with yourself, beg your mommy for some money and get something better. Or better yet, STFU!!

I like what Ricky says.

Downtime happens. Get some dedicated hosting and spend some major $$ if you want something more solid. Neither I or my customers have experienced any detrimental downtime. But then again, I used to work for a few ISP/Hosting companies, so these little bitches aren’t anything new to any company…there’s 12 whiners for every 1 issue.

The issue is, they’ve been having these sorts of problems for YEARS

So…you’ve been with them for years and they have been having the same issues for years…um…exactly WHO is the dumbass here? :-|

And if it’s taking you YEARS to find a new host…my advice is to stop trying to live this “interweb” fantasy you have going and go back to picking fruit or whatever your day job is!

Btw, you tech nerds don’t really understand the concept of Ping Tests and how inaccurate they can be in terms of actual up/downtime.

I should elaborate…when a server reaches anywhere near capacity, one of the first lines of traffic it will deny is a Ping. Doesn’t mean your site is down, by any means.

Everyone should visit my website…because Im cool and dreamhost isnt.

http://www.everything-macs.com

ping as nothing to do with up or down time, I agree. But why is it always bad with DH ?

I was to get client to switch to DH, if they have many downtime, how can I say “I’ve choose for you a professional host” ?

Year Month Uptime Downtime
2007 August 99.353% 0.647%
2007 July 98.997% 1.003%
2007 June 98.687% 1.313%
2007 May 100.000% 0.000%

here are my stats, and June was my fault. I think they are pretty damn good for the price I pay and the amount of storage I get.
I could be paying $100’s a month for this at most places.

As yes i agree with Ricky. All you whiners try myspace or facebook and leave this host for people who value it.

@Ricky: not everybody uses the cheapo $7 package. As a matter of fact, we pay a bit above the average for our package. The fact that you accept sub-standard service does not mean that this crap is acceptable.

I like DreamHost’s options, but it looks like they are missing enough backup systems to keep the thing running. I’m looking for a secondary host away from LA that could function as a mirror for times DH has the weekly or daily problems. Anybody any suggestions?

“near capacity”, you got the point. DH server are always near capacity ?

The problem with networking is that oftentimes the protocols/systems that allow for redundancy are usually what breaks. Routing network traffic isn’t all that different from routing vehicular traffic; when a wreck/malfunction clogs up your primary thoroughfare, it takes a while to get everything shifted over to the backup path, and there’s always a lot of chaos during the switch.

From my corner of the net, they got the problem fixed in about 10 minutes.

IT problems tend to come in bunches/clusters and right now DH is definitely in a cluster.

My site is back up and working again. Thanks guys that was pretty fast this time. I have mixed feelings about the service here. I have been with them for a couple years now and there has always been problems on and off. It seems like when they have problems, they really have problems. On the other hand they are very good at keeping us updated and they do seem to work hard at getting it fixed. This time it was fixed pretty quickly so I’m not going to jump ship just yet, although I have considered it. We run a TV & Radio station and use Dreamhost to host our website and e-mail. Due to the nature of the news biz, we are constantly updating the site and sending e-mails through out the office. That means when anything goes down, it is noticed instantly. I am also paid on salary so I don’t need the extra work. Here’s to hoping they get this worked out because I have already scouted out another web host. Everyone has problems sometimes, but they do seem to happen quite a bit around here.

“ping as nothing to do with up or down time, I agree. But why is it always bad with DH ?”

Ping times always vary from host to host. Shit, you can find a Host that has 100% ping times but your site will never be able to be viewed because the problem is deeper than just a first level connection that responds or does not respond to ping times.

“I was to get client to switch to DH, if they have many downtime, how can I say “I’ve choose for you a professional host” ?”

First, I’d check to make sure it’s not their fault they can’t access it. Next, if it’s truly legitimate downtime, I’d spend less time writing blogs and posts on DH’s page and go search out a Host that you feel is suitable for your needs of uptime, which apparently is not conceivable in the current state the Internet and it’s associated consumer available hardware is at.

No one likes downtime, DH least of all. Doens’t help their reputation. BUT, if you want guaranteed uptime, go get a dedicated or a colo with an expensive SLA. if you’re spending less than $200 a year, grow a pair and realize this happens. At least their honest enough to admit it. Frankly, I don’t think 95% of you would ever KNOW if it weren’t for this site and their blog. Name me another host as honest about this stuff.

I think a couple opportunist hosts are offering DH defector rates. Good luck finding as honest, hardworking and communicative host for anywhere close to this price/feature ratio.

haha.. I used to be on a hosting service that blocked me from their domain due to I caused a DoS attack via FTP’ing software “about 10 megs” to the server.. Then one time they updated the mysql and php without telling the customers. why don’t you whinners go to them. :P

i agree with so many people and your service appears to be getting worse. i have worked for many isps/providers and have NEVER had to deal with so much downtime. sort your act out or i am moving elsewhere. i am a core network engineer working with Juniper and Cisco products so “It seems our core router is having some major issues right now.” does not work for me…you only have ONE core router??? if so, all i can say is AMATEURS!!! what about redundancy???????

sort this out ASAP!!! (boys to do a man’s job also comes to mind!!!)

lame brains… i can do your job standing on my head even with one ‘core’ router!

BARRRACUDA SLOW

Yes, definitely seems like it’s time for some vendor diversity. Time for Juniper, or something other than Cisco.
Unless of course it’s a configuration issue, in which case I am not liking that I just paid for another year.

i have emailed myself several times today and they disappeared into the ether, so where are they, lost in your one ‘core router’ …. seems you would not know an apple core from a core router!!!!!

My e-mail is down. SMTP is broken or outgoing mail disappears. Bye!

My email had been down for the last 24 hours and only one of my sites is still down, the one that goes with the email address but whats funny is that my other site on the same server has been up the whole time. ?????

Glad to see it fixed, my outage was only like 5 minutes so not bad at all

Deep discount hosting and still all this complaining. I am willing to bet everyone of you is paying more for your ISP than for your hosting. Go home and host it on your own account. As for me, dreamhost has been a heck of a lot more reliable than some other’s i’m hosting with…(ahem, godaddy!). Perhaps everyone who still wants to gripe should change their name servers to their backup’s since im so sure that they have one ;-)

I’m sick and tired of all these outtages!! I going to punish you, DH. I’m not leaving!!! There, take that!!!

You know, if I was using a business-oriented hosting service that had so many problems lately I’d probably get aggravated. But that’s not what this side of DH is. This is supposed to be a light-hearted personal hosting service. So your down. If my life depended on your (or any other) hosting service I’d sure as heck realize that I can’t get something for nothing –and basically, DH charges nothing for the service it delivers to this side of the world. Do the math people and the shut up already. It’s almost to the point where I’m going to have to bring in the buckets to bail out the tears and bile. Yeah, it’s a pain in the butt… But, you get what you pay for.

Hey everybody! I’m not having any problems with *my* service, so I’m gonna belittle everyone who’s venting their frustration at paying good money and receiving crappy service! I’ve got no friends, so the only way I can feel good about myself is by verbally abusing other people on the Internet under the veil of anonymity! You’re not 100% happy with the service you’re receiving? Obviously this is *your* fault, because Dreamhost is faultless! You just don’t understand how the Internet works! I’m a tech expert because I say I am. Everyone who doesn’t agree with me is a whiner! Because I know everything, I know that everyone here must be using the very cheapest plan Dreamhost offers, so their complaints are invalid. They’re just saying they’re on more expensive plans to try to make me look like the arrogant shithead I am, but I’ll show them! Just you wait!

Is this becoming a daily thing now?

I love seeing these posts show up on my Netvibes page because I know I can come get quite a few laughs out of all the comments.

An estimated 15 minutes of downtime today; based on the fact there are 1,440 minutes in a day, that’s only 1.04% of the day within which downtime occurred.

If 98.96% uptime isn’t good enough for you, buy dedicated hosting.

Thanks Dreamhost for all you do.

As of 10:13 EDT we are still down on Nehi I thk, anyone else still totally down on web?
-T-

I wouldn’t even notice neither mention here today’s 15 minutes if this would be no problems during all last month…

Was it DDoS attack, or is it the hot summer? What’s going on this August?

Hey, I’m so clever. I wonder where Dreamhost hosts their site; it’s always up… Wait… that comment’s been posted before… like eleventy-three times.

My sites and email stayed up through this episode. I’ve been on DH for years, and like others, I’m stressed when there are problems, but in general things have been pretty reliable. I changed to DH from a more expensive eastcoast host because they went down and didn’t tell their customers a thing, and never replied to problem tickets.

I’m sticking with DH unless things start to really get bad (which I haven’t seen in 3 years).

Ok Dreamhost users I need your advice based on this question -

I have a Strictly Business Plan account and currently pay $79.95 a month although I do not have anything uploaded yet. So, if you were launching your business today which will eventually provide your full time income online, that is all your websites, blogs, membership sites, etc., would you do so on Dreamhost or would you get a dedicated server to start out?

Right now I am paying the $80/mo for nothing since I have not launched yet and I do not have any experience with the issues some of you have been having with DH lately. I have never hosted a website before or done anything online regarding running a website prior to this so this will be my very first webhosting experience. After looking at other hosting companies based on where I am at in the scheme of things just starting my business online, I decided DH offered a “virtual” dedicated hosting acct with their Strictly Business Plan for me to get things underway and be able to have a large amt of storage and bandwidth without having to fully invest in a dedicated server at this point.

Would love to hear some opinions/advice/experiences (especially if you have a Strictly Business Acct as well), from those of you running your businesses online.

Thanks everyone!

Best Regards,
Tom

To Tom,

If you want your websites to be right with The Lord, then yes, you should choose Dreamhost. But that alone will not make your websites righteous… thall shalt also use W3C validated code to make them.

As others have mentioned, we are not ALL having troubles. I myself have 13 Lord serving websites hosted with Dreamhost and each of them were praising Him with no interruptions during these tests from The Lord. Most of the people you see complaining do not have websites that are righteous, and as such are subject to occasional pestilences. These are warnings to their owners that they should seek the path to glory, but they cannot see that and only get mad because they cannot serve their sin.

Voice Of One

it’s still slow though. drives people off… and cuts the traffic to a minimum. but it’s alright. hope dreamhost can fix all the residual problems very soon.

Two plus effing days and the network problems are still not fixed? Bloody hell.

Get it up. Get it up.

running out of patience this third time in as many weeks complete no access to all websites

not even remotely funny

always same story….my main server space at http://www.shaunbelcher.com and subdirectories totally unavailable but other domains set up on the space are totally OK

no idea what going on - my ISP has delays in dns updating for sure but not their fault this time

please Dreamhost sort this out

my website main just returned..thanks if DH done it…but please stop shredding my nerves like this :-)

My website still down,
7 days, yes, 7 days, it’s very very bad, please help me.

@Scraps - if the website you’re referring to is the one you linked, it’s working now.

Scraps,

What part of your website is not working? I clicked on it and saw a blog, hmmm.

Chuan-Kai We,

Are you staying it’s Dreamhost’s fault that you have a 404 page not found? Maybe you should upload that page so we can see what you want us to see ;)

OMG^^^ Dude^^^^ dont blame DH for your incompetence

Hey, DreamHost “it’s only $7/mo, what do you expect” defenders: pull your heads out of your asses. Some of us pay a bit more than that and still get the same crap service you do.

I’ve been with DH for a couple years now; there’s been a few hiccoughs but nothing bad…. I guess I’m one of the lucky ones!

To anyone jumping ship to another hoster, thank you.

Go Dreamhost, go! :)

Especially if your sites are of The Devil. I hope The Lord casts out your evil sites and puts them into pigs which then run to the ocean, jump in and drown! On second thought, I do not want your evil in the ocean either, nor in our preciously beautiful outer space. May The Lord cast your shitty, non-W3C valid sites into a black hole that only contains evil and never lets it back out again, thus grouping all of the evil into one place forever! Then you will no longer be dragging the righteous down with your shitty ways, nor polluting the innocent with your no count content! And if thou shalt be a domainer, make it doubly so, and may The Lord upturn your tables, dumping all of the domains back into the public pool so that the righteous might have them at the proper price!

I’m pretty sure this one isn’t worthy of a “Resolved” just yet, kids.

It’s down.

This is becoming a daily thing now. I used to just let it go, thinking “I’ve had a great experience with them for the past two years, a few problems are understandable”. But now it’s just getting really annoying, and I’m honestly taking a look at switching hosts, even though I really don’t want to do that.

The very least they could do is credit us all with a month or so of hosting. This has been a constant thing for the past two weeks, and everyone is sick of it.

So damn slow.

Come on, Dreamhost, get it together. Up and downs? More like… downs and further downs.

Do you guys need help with anything? Because, damn.

OHHH SHIT! Servers are down again? That’s my cue! I’d better hurry and write a silly blog post about it!

Works for me. Dreamhost may not be the most reliable host, but they keep you informed about issues. I have had my site hosted with them for a year, with no more then a few hours downtime.
Keep up the good work.

One thing I’ll give em is they have a big pair. I mean leaving this blog up even with all the haters.

Some of us pay a bit more than that and still get the same crap service you do.

Yes, but we’re not the ones bitching about downtime. If you wanna bring up that you pay more than the people you’re trying desperately to bash, then by all means, pay more somewhere else. Maybe it’ll be smoother for the rest of us.

“Home Depo, you can do it! We can’t help!” :P

Ironically Home Depot outsources everything. So they use that slogan in reverse when it comes to important things like, oh say… EDI. ;P Anyone who has ever had to deal with Home Depot via EDI share’s my pain. And to you all, let me just say, it looks like theres no light at the end of this tunnel.

On the other hand, Dreamhost outsources nothing. So when theres a problem, someone is available to fix it! And when something needs to be done another way, they’ve got several guys and gals that can do something about it. I think that they’re doing an excellent job.

To all you whiners, get better clients if it means that much to you. Dreamhost can be a profit center for you. For those clients that whine as much as you, move them to a more reliable host. For those that don’t know a USB port from their a-holes… throw ‘em on DH. Simple as that.

The fact of the matter is, you shouldn’t be RELYing on DH. They do good work for the number of customers they have. And the number of clustered machines they have running. No wonder they have so many outages. They’re all running through one core router. But as they’ve said in the past, they’re going to fix it. And when they do all of the internet will rejoice as their sites are served faster than ever.

DNS ate my DREAM!

I pity the routers. They get all the blame.

I never thought I’d hang out on this blog so much… Seems like I’m here every couple of days nowadays.

To all the people whining about how the downtime is costing money in lost traffic, please get a baseball bat and hit yourself repeatedly on the head (preferrably until you knock yourself out please)…

Get a service with a guaranteed uptime. If your embarrased about getting calls about people’s sites being down, you should take their money and invest it in a better plan or a dedicated server with an SLA. Imagine if somehow word got out that you pay $15 or whatever you pay a month for your hosting on a server that you don’t own, let alone is also (possibly) shared with other people and their sites. I bet that would cause a lot of people to leave, I know I would and heck I don’t even run a business (well, not a very big one anyways…)

Also if your saying your gonna leave, please do so ASAP. You will free up more server/network resources for me and others that dont use this for high importance things and might even help fix the network problems they (dreamhost) are having too since your traffic isnt passing through their network anymore. :)

I wish all the DH fanboys would stop whining about people whining. 2 whines don’t make a happy customer base, nor does it make for uptime on DH servers and routers while the support staff is out getting high.

Whether the Hosting is 50 cents or 7 dollars a month, the service is obviously going down on a more frequent basis. This trend continues to grow. That statement is not a whine, it is a FACT.

SLA or not, I use other sources for the same amount of money that have far less downtime. As a matter of fact, there are hosts out there that have 99% uptime SLAs for about the same cost as dreamhost (but everyone already knows that).

Let the DH fanboy whining about my comment begin. (don’t forget to call me a retard)

Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics. Even if you win, you’re still a retard.

Alexmit Says:
“nor does it make for uptime on DH servers and routers while the support staff is out getting high.”

Nosir, but it does make for the DH staff being closer to The Lord, who is well known to reside upwardly, despite also being all around… what a mysterious fellow that Lord can be!

the1337g33k, don’t worry, I’m making my move tonight!

The Lord believes that people who use the word “client” a lot are in need of humbling anyways, as they are usually using the word to inflate their sense of projected worth, which of course is tied directly into at least one of the seven deadly sins.

*warning* things are going down again *argh!*

router issues return! hooray!

So uhm, is it down?

Okay … now it’s picking back up. I couldn’t get to my sites, webmail, or the panel for a while there.

Access to my site is brutally slow now. I don’t think it’s ‘resolved’

Now even my fully XHTML 1.0 Strict valid, Good Lord praisin websites are loading slower than a sinner on his way to communion! And The Lord is holdin back the control panel too! I hope yall are kickin ass over at the dodgeball field!

same here

i am dreamhost’s little bitch

I have multiple websites, email, and control panel access down still. Surely this isn’t a co-incidence? Can’t even get on to the dreamhost webpanel send a support ticket. Anyone know if this is still getting looked into?

\o/ everything is back to normal! (or not?)

Resolved? The sites may be up… but its loading sooooooo slooooooow! This is not resolved in my book!

My site’s down, the panel’s really slow… and I was beginning to believe that Dreamhost was going to be better about downtime…

Try BlueHost.com. I switched 5 domains to there and never been down since. DH sucks!

compensation this time?

Why dreamhoststatus is ever online?
