Server daedalus getting new hardware

The server ‘daedalus’ had a hardware failure, so we’re moving it over to new hardware. This process should take about 30 minutes, and we will update this post when it is completed.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

Update: 3:03PM pacific: We’ve successfully switch it over to the new hardware. Services should be coming up steadily. We will post another update again when everything is complete.

Update: 3:13pm pacific: The hardware move process has been completed. If you have any issues with daedalus, please contact support!

Why are hardware failures that bring my sites down considered low severity??

  2. Quick Says:

Why is my site not loading (AGAIN) when it’s not even on Daedalus?

  3. Aaron Says:

Because the issue is planned and not widely distributed (one server) and will be resolved in 30 minutes.

  4. Katie Says:

My site on krusty is being really, REALLY slow. I doubt this is related, but do you know what’s going on?

Same here all sites are down and not even on the same server. Wonder how much traffic is being lost on a daily basis? Every time I seem to be updating a site the server is down or goes down.

  20. sal Says:

I’ve been reporting periodic outages of my sites to DreamHost support — sometimes the sites are very slow, sometimes WordPress can’t connect to MySQL. I’ve been told this is related to the ongoing Cisco router issues from last month.

I’m guessing the servers are fine, but the network is a mess. Regardless, this is something that shouldn’t take weeks to fix.

  21. Kaleem Says:

mine is gromit and its down

  22. Killeroid Says:

My sites are on smither and they are all slow. Whats going on?

  23. Phip Says:

Hmmm… don’t mean to join in Dreamhost bashing or anything, but my sites are fluctuating between not working and no access to MySQL. It does seem as though this is more than just a single server problem, I’m on gobstopper.

Seems “Federal” has shit the bed again, too. I’m getting tired of my inbox filling up with server error messages. 4 months to go until my 2 year prepaid plan is up and you can bet I am NOT renewing it! >:-(~

  30. Quick Says:

Just figured I’d mention I’m on Hephaestus, and, as mention, it is down, too.

  40. Rex Says:

Lovejoy is back up! (twice in the last hour)

  41. cuberoot Says:

    aries is down too

  42. Quick Says:

Hephaestus is back up, as well. At least, for now.

  43. Anna Says:

My website is having SQL issues - which is great considering I run the updates on Wordpress.

  44. Anna Says:

    Nevermind, its back.

  45. Matt Says:

Awesome, Twisler was down too. That’s really bad for my business to be down more than 30 seconds… What’s going on? Someone unplug something?

  46. Roy Says:

Well, this is really something. I’m on lenny and all 20 of my sites are down. Not slow loading. Not loading at all.

Overall, I’ve been happy here and want to keep promoting you and stick around. But this seems serious and no one is standing up and telling us what is going on.

It’s when there is a problem that support is tested and so far, I’m not too happy with it.

  47. Web Developer Blog Says:

Two of my sites are going down…been like this quite a while. (2 hours +)

  48. dhs Says:

    seriously,

“Because the issue is planned and not widely distributed (one server) and will be resolved in 30 minutes.”

that’s why this is low priority? the plan was to take down just daedalus? it’s low priority when the rest of us are affected as well?

dreamhost, this is unacceptable. it seems to take us all down anytime you do what’s supposed to be a solitary repair or upgrade. how about some priority, or better yet a warning. in advance. way in advance.

we depend on you for our businesses, our sustenance.

personally, I’m done giving you yours - where’s the reciprocity?

  49. Tomatoville Says:

Federal seems to be back up…for now.

Like my granddaddy always said “You pay for what you get.” Guess I didn’t pay enough to these people. (?)

  50. Roy Says:

    I’m back online. Thanks.

  51. DebO Says:

    ikari is down, again.
We’ve been with DH about 3 years and things chug along fine - then wham! meltdown happens about 2x year - and goes on and on for days before smoothing out.

(no web site, just use FTP as we are group of telecommuting graphics pool - and down time hurts bad! it always comes during major deadline don’t ‘cha know)

  52. Erick Says:

Wordpress shows an error, please I want a solution

  53. kitchen Says:

    @dhs:

    seriously,

“Because the issue is planned and not widely distributed (one server) and will be resolved in 30 minutes.”

that’s why this is low priority? the plan was to take down just daedalus? it’s low priority when the rest of us are affected as well?

The daedalus issue and the network issues are completely unrelated. I do apologize for the network problems, but the daedalus failover is a fairly minor issue, and is not likely affecting you. We do realize that for those who are *on* daedalus, the issue isn’t minor, but unless you are on daedalus, this is not affecting you.

  54. William Says:

My sites (which are on daedalus) are back up, but I do have a question about timing of the planned hardware change? Why not do this late evening/early morning instead of middle of the day?

  55. kitchen Says:

it actually wasn’t a planned hardware change. the machine daedalus was on failed and it had to be switched over to new hardware.

otherwise, yes, we would definitely do this late in the evenings :)

  56. William Says:

Ah, I read a post form “aaron” saying the daedalus issue was planned and not widely distributed - for some reason I thought that was an official response.

  57. Marc Says:

My sites were on Deadalus! Thanks for bringing them up quickly! Highly appreciated!

  58. Online Classifieds Says:

    Good that it is back!

  59. Jill Says:

    10-25-07

Fourth time since 9/17 that I’ve had an inability to get into my site. I just uploaded sometehing into my plugin folder and now Dreamhost AND my blog are completely down just rotating and not loading. I can’t even get to the place to leave an “I’ve got a problem” message.

    I am sooooo sad!

  60. knTurk Says:

  61. Ośrodki Wypoczynkowe Says:
