One-Click Installs: Wordpress updated to 2.3
Wordpress 2.3 adds quite a few new features, which you can read more about on the release page:
A few important notes before you upgrade:
-Please check your plugins and themes for compatibility before the upgrade. You can do so at the links below:
Wordpress 2.3 Plugin Compatibility List
Wordpress 2.3 Theme Compatibility List
-The new version of Wordpress has an automatic functionality to send information to Wordpress servers concerning your software/plugin versions. Since some users have objected to the idea of this data being sent, I’ve automatically included two plugins: one that allows you disable Wordpress update notification, and one that allows you to disable plugin update notification. More information about this issue can be viewed in this post by one of the lead developers of Wordpress.
As always, Wordpress may be updated by logging in to panel.dreamhost.com, clicking on the Goodies tab on the left side, and then clicking on the One-Click Installs page.

Of course, it’s been available in subversion for a while now. Really, you should all check out the subversion instructions in the Wordpress codex, it’s so easy.

The one-click install upgrade does a great job of backing up files, but I have no idea if it backs up the database at all. And that makes me nervous.

@Jemaleddin
The one-click doesn’t make an automatic database backup. The mysql servers do make daily backups, but if your data is very important and/or you want a backup for a specific time/date, making one yourself is the best plan.

First!

I just wanted to mention that my upgrade was smooth and the WP-Cache plugin as well as the Barthelme 1.1 theme migrated fine.

Does anyone know if the Classic theme and the Bookmark and Share plug in still work in 2.3? Those links to the WP blog don’t list either in either list.

installed the upgrade and the process went without hitch
first of all i deactivated all my plugins apart from askimet, then backed up my db, then ran the panel’s upgrade script. after that i went to my blog’s admin front page was greeted with a wordpress db upgrade which which i ran, and then bob’s yer uncle! i reactivated all my plugins and off we go…
the panel’s upgrade script seems to copy all your plugins and installed themes into the new version of the folder (the old one being renamed with a ‘.old’ extension)
my wordpress runs the ‘Unsleepable 2 0.9.1′ theme and has the ‘Askimet’, ‘Sociable’, ‘Extended Comment Options’, ‘iWPhone’, ‘WordPress Mobile Edition’ and ‘Tiger Style Administration’ installed - all of which still work with no tweaks required

That’s neat, you immediately put up those plugins. … I’m not using the one-click install wordpress, but it’s neat you give people the option to use those plugin(s). Good thinking, it seems you aren’t just a bot updating each version. You really take the time to cover up problems and find salvations. Respect man, good job.

Thanks, was waiting to update on couple of my sites, Wanted to try out the tags
September 28th, 2007 at 10:07 am
aye, those tags work quite nicely! my wordpress site - quiffboy.com - is pretty small but i like the multiple ways it gives you to group content and navigate around it.

If anyone wants it, I wrote a plugin which allows you to stay up to date (meaning it doesn’t disable the update functionality) but sends back a bogus URL (please.respect.my.privacy.org) instead of your actual blog URL. I wrote it for a few friends of mine the day 2.3 came out. I don’t use WP myself, so I see no reason to register to actually upload it to their site, anyone else who wants to take ownership of the plugin can do so though.

Be sure to check your plugins before doing this. Upgradign messed me up to the point I had to reverse it, even after I deleted any plugins I thought might be causing problems. It wasn’t worth it to me.

Things that suck: if you screw up an install and have to back it out, you can’t use one-click again.

Jemaleddin and Justin, database backup is easy with the right plugin: Two that work great are…
1. WordPress Database Backup (can be set to email you your database once every week, day, hour, or on demand.
2. WP-DBManager (backs up on demand PLUS makes restoring or managing your database very straightforward — point and click.

or you could set up a shell script that backs the db up to a zip file
i have this setup, and it means i can a) create a cron job to run the shell script in the wee hours of the morning to give me nightly db backups, and b) run the backup manually whenever i want via the ssh prompt…
i can happily past the syntax for the sh script here if anyone wants it

I want to go back tot 2.2. I still have a backup named xxx.old on my server. It’s a file that Dreamhost makes for you when using Fantastico. Can anyone tell me how I should recover? Should I only delete the new version from the server and rename the old version?

Good support, thanks dreamhost

Really don’t use fantastico to install your wordpress, I installed one in my site with fantastico and after when I need update this, all was issues. Manual install is really easy and don’t get error when need update.
