Not Cool -
While I think the work Dream Host does to support charitable causes is noble and great I think considering the amount of down time on the servers that it is not at all appropriate to post a spur to action on this blog. My feed is for “general outages” and evertime I see activity my heart stops a beat and I think oh crap not again and rush to see whether I need to contact any clients and apologize once more for the hosting or use my back up on another host to post new content instead. So finding a “please give” message isn’t exactly helpful and I think there are more appropriate ways to engage your customers in charity work. Once the services you provide are 99% up and reliable, then you can reconsider posting these types of messages here. My 2 cents.

Server problems has nothing to do with being charitable, jackass.
They match the donations and it helps others out. They’re not asking for anything. What an idiot.
October 1st, 2007 at 11:29 am
Seconded, J. This blog is also for system-wide announcements, which is what the charitable giving post is.
And I have absolutely no sympathy for someone who has to “contact their clients and apologize for the hosting”. What they should apologize for is recommending a host that has no uptime guarantee. Don’t promise your clients more than DH promises you, and you won’t have to apologize!

Hey, I might donate… except I can’t access panel.dreamhost.com. So technically this IS now a server problem.
October 1st, 2007 at 11:40 am
whew - well. Points taken. This was marked for me as “General Outages” (This entry was posted 1 hour, 54 minutes ago on Monday, October 1st, 2007 at 9:40 am and is filed under General Outages. ) and while I did get a bit extreme due to my frustration with things not working well the last couple of months (I have been a patient DH user since 2005) I am not sure my comment requires this level of personal attack. If the post was indeed marked System-wide announcements then I was surely out of line. BTW I DO contribute ot DH charities and think the fact that they have them is great - and one of the reasons I remain with dreamhost. So anyhow, consider me well rebuked and if the sys admin wants to remove my comments I would understand.
October 1st, 2007 at 12:15 pm
It would be great if at every DHs downtime or sever failure they pay for charity some amount of cash. Sure the charities would be grateful.
October 1st, 2007 at 2:47 pm
I agree with hgm, this channel should be kept clear for sys notices only.
October 1st, 2007 at 3:44 pm
Fecking clowns - charity has NOTHING to do with service issues whatsoever - what kind of idiot are you to even TRY to argue that it’s relevant? HGM you are right to question this, so don’t be an apologist - if anywhere this should be posted on the DH blog, NOT here, and considering how crap the service has been lately, I’m not surprised people are holding back funds - why should DH take the credit for it and use it as a tax writeoff, which is likely the real reason their accountant would have said go for it. My estimation of DH continues to plummet, and those clowns who attacked you are sickening in their sycophantic frothing-at-the-mouth adulation of DH.
October 1st, 2007 at 3:48 pm
Feckit, I’m moving another client hosting account away from DH for this. DH, you can thank your little nazi friends above for giving me that extra little shove. At this rate I’ll have all my clients moved by the end of the year!
October 1st, 2007 at 3:52 pm
One more thing for Asscrest up there - from DH about page http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/about/ in their very own words :
“This website is hosted outside of DreamHost’s main network so it will always be accessible in the event of any major network downtime. Information about service issues, changes, and updates will be posted here.”
Requests for donations is not a service issue, service change, or service update, so stfu.
October 1st, 2007 at 4:16 pm
Wow. Incredible to think that we could have personal attacks, people asscusing DH of wrongdoing, and even clients leaving over something over something like a request for charity donations. I’m on the fence about this; I have no incentive to become part of another useless and pointless internet ‘debate’, but my god people, aren’t you taking it to extremes?
Think of the children!

Although I agree with HGM in his/her initial post, I wasn’t overly concerned until I saw these fecking fanatical DH idolists start to go batshit-crazy on him for even daring to question the almighty awesomeness that is DH! I get so sick of these clowns - that’s what got my blood boiling, enough to take the trouble of moving another client - I’m getting quite proficient at it now.
October 1st, 2007 at 4:29 pm
I just want to know though, why are you moving because of other clients of DH? First off, it’s not DH’s fault they are ‘idolists’ (in your eyes or theirs), so why punish DH? Secondly, you don’t deal with the DH users anyway. They don’t affect your serivice by being ‘idolists’, they aren’t ruining your reputation, so why justify the community as a ‘reason for escape’?
However, it IS your money, I recommend you do as you wish, as it will make it so the results are there due to your actions, not other peoples. Keep everyone else out of the decision making, make your mind up based upon the SERVICE you are getting, then make the choice. Don’t involve the community, it hasn’t actually got anythign to do witht he hosting you pay for.

And wow, I need to replace my keyboard.
October 1st, 2007 at 4:31 pm
Wise words, thanks. Unfortunately the service level has been less than desirable too, it’s just the straw that broke the camel’s back.
October 1st, 2007 at 4:33 pm
Wow leaving DH because of a miscategorization in a blog post that’s real a professional decision there you clown cakes *rolls eyes*
October 1st, 2007 at 4:34 pm
That’s fair enough. ‘Cheap-as-chips’ hosting’s not for everyone. I wish you luck with your new host.

Looks like Josh picked the wrong category for this! Sorry about that, I’ve changed it to features and uncategorized.
October 1st, 2007 at 5:30 pm
I just find it pathetic how a war erupts over miscategorization! You lot are crazy! At least DH are seen to be donating something to charities, regardless of which category they post it under! Please grow up
October 3rd, 2007 at 5:13 pm
I think I just farted.
October 4th, 2007 at 12:56 am
Not a ‘miscategorization’. This does not belong on this site at all and is entirely inappropriate for the ‘dreamhost status’.
I’d like to contribute to the ‘keep our f*ing servers up’ fund, how about that one.
October 4th, 2007 at 2:15 pm
Ben, how about you go kill yourself, since your mother didn’t have the decency to abort you.
October 6th, 2007 at 12:33 am
There is NO wrong time, place nor category for people helping people.
Also, it doesn’t matter whether or not there are tax write offs involved… no matter how you slice it the end result is money going to charities that otherwise would not have.
October 6th, 2007 at 3:00 pm
waaaaaah. shove your altruism up your ass, this ain’t the place for it, period.
- and Zach go fuck yourself.
October 6th, 2007 at 3:14 pm
That’s Incredible! Says:
“waaaaaah”
The cries of a truly sad person.
October 6th, 2007 at 3:28 pm
ouch I’m hurt. really.
October 6th, 2007 at 5:47 pm
That’s Incredible is just upset because the donations aren’t going towards something that would benefit him, like a cure for AIDS. But that’s what he gets for not making his dad wear a rubber.
October 7th, 2007 at 12:35 am
who let the 10-year-old on here?
October 7th, 2007 at 12:52 pm
Apparently, at least one 10 year old is hear because your mommy isn’t keeping an eye on you. Maybe she’ll kick you off the computer when she’s done filming her bukkake scene?
October 7th, 2007 at 3:02 pm
Better ask your momma — she’s the one sucking on my balls. Or you could ask your dad once you finish sucking him off. Don’t bother asking your sister tho cause her mouth is going to be full of my dik for a while.
October 7th, 2007 at 3:03 pm
and your girlfriend told me about your small dik — we were laughing, but that was after I cum in her.
October 7th, 2007 at 5:56 pm
That’s original. And obvious BS, since you’d never let a female near your little marbles.
The funniest thing about your dick jokes are that you can’t spell dick. I know those single syllable words can be a little tricky–if you’re retarded.
October 7th, 2007 at 6:24 pm
this is dumb. that’s incredible why did you even come here? your first post is being stupid and it went downhill from there
October 7th, 2007 at 7:40 pm
your just jealous
free entertainment
October 7th, 2007 at 8:46 pm
so you think it’s not the place for a donation reminder but you think it’s a good idea to trash the site with this crap
October 7th, 2007 at 9:00 pm
You got it!
October 7th, 2007 at 9:05 pm
I can respect that… it is indeed free entertainment.
October 7th, 2007 at 9:23 pm
VOO speaks true
October 7th, 2007 at 9:29 pm
*sigh*
At least no-one can say I didn’t try. Just when I started to respect you Incredible. I thought you might have more decency than to play up to that.
As for Zach, seriously dude, grow up. If you wanted to prove a point, you sure as hell went the wrong way about it. Incredible (at the time) did the right thing in admitting what he thought was in fact not the best way to think of something, and actually THANKED someone who had a different opinion than himself. If you want to reinforce that message, please do it with decency and politeness! You aren’t helping the situation here. You’re discrediting yourself, and discrediting what you believe in. I think I speak for everyone when I say you certianly haven’t made yourself very popular over here.

October 7th, 2007 at 10:44 pm
Aww come on TC… lighten up… this is the internet, you should know by now that it’s the best place to go for silly, mindless fun mixed in with the usefulness! Even The Lord gets an occasional kick out of stuff like that!
October 7th, 2007 at 11:55 pm
TrojanCentaur: With all due respect, go eat a bucket full of shit and kill yourself.
October 8th, 2007 at 12:14 am
Now Zach, let’s not go TOO far… it is certainly fine to suggest that he eat a bucket of shit, but suicide is one thing that really shouldn’t be joked about. You are of course free to be as you may, but I would hope that we can try to respect life at a certain base level. Again though, the bucket of shit stuff, let er rip.
October 8th, 2007 at 1:27 am
TC once again brings me back to reality, but seriously, it’s fun getting young Zachery all frazzled, although I did go a bit too far there.
Zach, no need to throw your toys out of the pram, you’re only encouraging me.
tee hee.
October 8th, 2007 at 3:08 am
Ok guys, knock yourselves out then. So long as you’re having fun (and aren’t offending too many young ones
). And as for Zack, yeah, I could no longer give a toss. I’ve given him my opinion. Any further action by him would make the community laugh harder, I guess net benefit is the fact both he ridicules himself, and the community gets a laugh.
And you were saying the community around DH was aweful, Incredible.
