Janky mail problems

Posted (October 10th, 2007 at 9:09 am PST) by andrea

We’re currently experiencing very high loads on janky mail servers. This is causing your mail to be slow or inaccessible. You may be affected if your mail server is listed as ‘Janky’ under Account Status in the control panel (upper right corner).

Very sorry about the inconvenience, we’re doing all we can to alleviate the situation as soon as possible. Please check back for updates.

Update @ 10am PST:
The problem turned out to be file server related, so the admins offloaded the machine to share the load with another file server. We’ve been monitoring the load for the past hour or so, and it’s now stable. If you’re still having mail issues it’s most likely unrelated, so please submit a new requests with as many details as possible, so we can assist you asap. Sorry again about the inconvenience this have caused you.

Few days ago, there was similar problems with janky - inaccessible for more than 5 hours - officials said that additional hardware had been added to handle the problem, so what is happening? Email is mission critical for me and my customers.

Best regards,
Marek

NOT AGAIN , NOT AGAIN , NOT AGAIN , NOT AGAIN, NOT AGAIN, NOT AGAIN, NOT AGAIN, NOT AGAIN, NOT AGAIN, NOT AGAIN, NOT AGAIN, NOT AGAIN, NOT AGAIN, NOT AGAIN, NOT AGAIN, NOT AGAIN, NOT AGAIN, NOT AGAIN, NOT AGAIN, NOT AGAIN, NOT AGAIN, NOT AGAIN, NOT AGAIN

PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEE , turn on the janky Fu@%$” Serverrrrrrrrrrr

Constant problems. DH should have a blog for when everything is working properly. That would require far less posting on their part.

what is the deal??? we’d heard this was the place to be….WHY are there sooooo many problems??? we’ve been without mail like FIVE TIMES just this week alone!!! this is nuts, truly…….

The server has not been working for a couple of hours now.

Been trying to get hold of customer support, but to no avail.

This issue did *not* surface only 20 mins ago..

Good job on keeping customers updated on what is going on.

It is unbeliavable, once again we are left without email!!!!!! I know this hosting is kind of cheap, but they should update their crappy servers and give good service for customers. Besides what kind of name is JANKY (specially for a server).

Second major outage in two weeks. They need to rename that F*&%’in thing to JUNKY !!!

@everyone: I just wanted to remind all the complainers to stop hitting the mail server until the issue is posted as resolved, otherwise it will take even longer.

@pissed off: ALL shared web hosting companies suffer from this level of issues. The difference is that DreamHost keeps us informed when others hide the problems.

@rafael: There are hundreds of servers with all sorts of interesting names taken from science, popular culture, etc. You might find the irony of the name “Janky” amusing.

its 9 dollars a month people.

joy!

October 10th, 2007 at 10:02 amChristopher J. Pilkington Says:

@simon: Dreamhost doesn’t necessarily keep you informed. I’ve been opening tickets on this issue continuously over the past week. Only now is it making it to the status blog.

It’s also hard to convince inbound email from hitting the mail server, don’t you think?

Yes, it seems the problems they’re experiencing with Janky has been persistent. I just moved my clients to an account that happens to use Janky for email too. Have any of you had success in requesting to have the account moved to a different email server, perchance?

Darius, Bluehost is only ~7 dollars a month and they host with reliable hardware. They are so far ahead of DH it’s a joke.

The only thing worse than a host with such poor quality hardware are the morons who keep defending this junk. You guys are all better off on Geocitites, if that’s still around. I mean, at least your email will work.

email’s still timing out…it’s not resolved… *very deep sigh*

@Sabirius : email’s still timing out…it’s not resolved… *very deep sigh*

indeed… this is far from solved

“Darius, Bluehost is only ~7 dollars a month and they host with reliable hardware. They are so far ahead of DH it’s a joke.”

Yes, the are really kicking ass with those CPU exceeded errors that you get when doing something as common as backing up a wordpress database.

I use Google Aps for e-mail… I just completely shut off my DH e-mail… it had so many problems…

Problem is dreamhost is the authority so when change the mx it still has to to hit dreamhost to goto that great bit bucket in the sky google–noww what happens when dreamhost has probklemm with dns –what happen to your mail then smartyy appz boy?z

October 10th, 2007 at 1:09 pmChristopher J. Pilkington Says:

@Eric: No privacy concerns?

@ehlo loco: You don’t have to use DH DNS… besides, if they manage to screw DNS up, they’ll all be looking for jobs.

Way to quite here now… The Lord is gonna have to do some more smiting to stir up some action!

He’s currently overseeing the damnation of Lunarpages. give the guy a break… even he’s still just one man. He can’t be everywhere… that’s why he has you. Or so he wants you to think.

@Simon Jessey: ALL shared web hosting companies DO NOT suffer from this level of issues. DH is certainly the worst I’ve experienced to date.

@Christopher J. Pilkington: they already have managed to screw DNS up once, a month or so ago…

ehlo loco, I have no problwems with my e-mail I’m just informing you all. i use googles mx records so no matter how many times my DH mx fails or server shuts down it doesn’t affect my mail. and google has lasted me 6 months so far no errors.

Fixed? Not the mail server!

Hey, it’s broken again, what a surprise.

Can anyone recommend a shared host that doesn’t suck? I just switched to DH from a great host but they cost $25/month and only give like 400mb of storage, lazylizard.biz. I’m just looking for more storage and something a little cheaper. But I do need email, at least occasionally.

@BenA: In my experience, most shared hosts suck. The CPanel-based ones lack clue and flexibility. The fly-by-night ones are usually very flexible and cheap, but they lack business plans, grow too quickly, and then fail. Ones like 1&1 have reliability but the performance is very limited due to caps on CGI time, processor, etc.

Resolved? Um. No. Intermittent isn’t good enough.

and it’s down yet again this morning. awesome.

Funny thing is, this happened 22 mins after we got an “all clear” email =P

I just moved to Bluehost, waiting for the DNS changes to kick in.

I’ve had enough.

Good luck with bluehost - you will definitely need it. They are on par with DH as the worst hosts I ever had. They will take your site offline temporarily for something as minor as rebuilding your weblog, because it uses too much CPU (ridiculous). Try Media Temple. There are discount coupon codes available too if you google for it.

All our email addresses just vanished!!!

All the email addresses for one of my domains vanished at about the same time. They are on janky…. They still show up when I put in a support request, and some — though not all — are appearing under account status.

Not impressive.

This is NOT resolved. Many of my e-mail accounts have disappeared from my control panel, and I am not able to access any of them using webmail or IMAP.

This is the first serious issue that I’ve encountered with dreamhost.

Where did all my email accounts go???? theyre gone!

October 11th, 2007 at 1:40 pmRafael Rezende Says:

All my email accounts are also gone!!

Guess I will have to move all my mail to Google apps.

Normally I’d do this through the panel but it’s not working… again… so…
“DREAMHOST YOU’RE DOWN AGAIN!!!!”

FIX IT!

My mail server is “spacey” and email accounts on SOME of my domains have also disappeared. Logging in via webmail just throws up some “unknown user/password” error.

I’m sorry I was mistaken:

The missing e-mail problem is for people on the “spacey” e-mail server, as I am. No word from dreamhost staff yet.

My missing ones are on janky, not spacey. I put in support requests over two hours ago. No response from DH as yet

8 of my email accounts have disappeared from janky about 30 minutes ago. This is the first problem I’ve had besides the occasional slowness of shared web hosting. So far still worth my 7.95 a month.

I think I am going to move to RackSpace and pay the $400/month. More expensive - yes by a factor of 10 but one lost sales lead pays for that in a year. We have been down for two hours and have had problems all week with intermittent outages. It’s hard to be taken seriously by Fortune 500 companies when you have to keep saying ho sorry my email is down again

@LRH: Email addresses are missing from both JANKY and SPACEY. I am on SPACEY and I can assure you my email addresses are gone just as everyone on JANKEY.

My mail is also missing. I filed a ticket (adding to the pile, I’m sure). Jeez, I picked the wrong day to flip the switch and change all my MX records to point into DH.

All my email addys are missing as well, on janky. The control panel recognizes that my lists still exist, but all the list aliases, etc are gone.

I just moved to DreamHost from a dedicated server because I was tired of maintaining my own software after 6 years. That and I could no longer justify $150/month.

I posted this as a support ticket:

Email slowness or downtime is somewhat acceptable when trying to retrieve one’s email. It happens. Customers get that.

HOWEVER, it is NEVER acceptable for email accounts to become undeliverable due to downtime. THIS IS LOST INFORMATION. If mail gets to your datacenter, it should remain in queue until your system can find the machine to deliver it to!!! It should not be bounced unless the machine for which it was intended can verifiably say there’s no user with that address.

It is NOT resolved as of 3 PM Pacific Time, 10/11/07.

The new problem is that logins return the following error:

ERROR
Unknown user or password incorrect.
Go to the login page

This is unacceptable. The band-aid approach is not working and DreamHost is making it impossible for customers on this server to conduct business.

It’s back - at least I can see my email names on my control panel on janky again. It’s 4:25PM PST.

October 11th, 2007 at 5:15 pmMickey Mouse Webhost Says:

Fuck it I’m out….Fuck Janky and DH

holy crapOla! this has been going on for like three weeks.

Gah. This is unbelievable. Sure, IMAP-server downtime is one thing, but actually making the email undeliverable is just too much. I was lucky to get a call from a client asking me what was wrong, otherwise I might not have noticed this. Hopefully I didn’t lose to many emails (!).

ANYWAY, I THINK THIS CAN SOLVE SOME PROBLEMS:
(since DH seems unable to)

I wen into my Web Panel, the mail section, and account by account i pressed edit and then save (without any changes). This seemed to “re-activate” them (even though they shouldn’t have been de-activated from the start).

I’ll switch hosting the next week.

we’re gonna f*cking lose our clients because of this. I guess we get what we f*cking paid for…

Is Janky completely down now?

It seems so.

And they’re not awake yet. We won’t see a friggin update, if at all, until 9am PST.

can’t handle these BS email issues any longer. anyone have a suggestion of where i should move my hosting to?

Janky is down again, go figure. I guess I’ll be paying a premium to another place, I can’t deal with all of these stupid email issues.

Yes it appears Janky is down again.

I don’t get it. Are they trying to lose customers? Do they not care? Are they just incompetent? They don’t respond quickly to support requests, they claim they have fixed the problem when they have not. Are they severely understaffed (taking in lots of money but not spending it? Do they want to run their business into the ground? I just don’t get it.

Most businesses RESPOND to their customers when there is a problem, and when they respond, they tell it like it is. Here, they say everything has been fixed (on the support log) but it clearly hasn’t.

I may need to leave too. I’m spending too much time trying to get to my time-critical business email.

“I’m spending too much time trying to get to my time-critical business email.”

Then why the HELL are you on a 9 dollar a month hosting plan? Even if you pay more, its the same servers and hardware as the 9 dollar a month plan, and you knew that when you signed up.

ERROR:
ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server.

:(

Yup.

Everything’s “janky”, alright.

…don’t know what the word means, but it sure sounds bad.

So yeah, I run a personal business and one of the services i offer my clients is , you guessed it, email. Needless to say, i am VERY VERY VERY dissapointed. My email has been down since the 10th. WTF!
i will NOT be renewing my contract with Dreamhost. Yes, Bluehost is one of the Top rated hosts. I would rather stick with DH, but only if tehy can get it together once and for all. I have been having consistent email problems with DH for almost a year now. Unacceptable.

DREAMHOST, WHEN WILL THIS BE RESOLVED!!!!!

Pleeeease fix these email problems. I would appreciate an update, but I can’t even reach your website. My email is down, my website is down and I’m very disappointed. Tomorrow, I will be livid. I run a business and it is critical that I have my website and email 100% functional. Can someone recommend a reliable host? I am willing to pay more for it.

Cool, the post.

Thanks for the information.
