Site slowdowns for some customers

Posted (October 12th, 2007 at 11:37 am PST) by jeremy

Another filer issue this morning caused some high loads and site slowness for the following servers. It’s now been fixed and we’re working on resolving the issue permanently.

I’d hardy call being offline on and off afternoon Medium severity.
My sites have been up and down all afternoon… again!

Slowness? Yes, there was slowness yesterday. But according to the log files my site on nestea was down for about 5 hours last night.

wow, pocky is also really slow. It seems like things have really gown down hill in the last 6 months. I love the stuff you guys offer but it has become to unreliable and it is not acceptable.

I’m sure glad I’m not hosted with DH anymore…

armourking, I guess your new host doesn’t give you a status site to whine on?

Good one J
Maybe he has second doubts…lol

Does anyone else find that their sites on these servers are constantly slow? For example, to load the main page of my one-click-install Wiki takes about 7.5 seconds. My blog took about the same until I turned on WP-cache and it went down to an acceptable 1.5 seconds. I’m on fios, so almost all sites load fast - Google is a blazing .4 seconds - but is this too slow, even for shared hosting? Or am i just expecting too much?

Hi solipsistic

1. is wordpress the only thing you are running on your site?

2. are you using a hacked version of wordpress (ie. have you installed any mods / what template are you using / or is it just the basic wordpress?

3. which version of wordpress do you have installed at the very moment?

Barbara,

I’m using the barthaleme template with the wp-cache, wp-syntax and google sitemap plugings. No other hacks or other changes. Wordpress is at 2.3. Wordpress is the fastest thing I’ve hosted with Dreamhost (besides static html files) due to the caching plugin. Other things - the picture gallery and wiki - seem a bit too slow. I have them at their most up-to-date one-click versions and no special changes.

More help on wordpress performance on DH servers might be found in the forums at http://discussions.dreamhost.com

There’s all kinds of slowness on my end, but not just with DH. Although, admitedly, some of what I’m accessing is probably travelling along some of the same paths as DH. But I think whatever is going on today isn’t necessarily restricted to these servers.

Seems many major outages on DH were caused by “filer”. That is why they said “we’re working on resolving the issue permanently”.

I hope there will be a permanent solution very soon. Otherwise, “filer” will become (or is becoming) a “DH killer”. :)

All my sites are usually a bit slow with DH but it’s still excellent value for money.

I don’t know about anyone else, but dads is kicking some MAJOR butt since just after this status post was set to “resolved”!
Dunno if it has something to do with MySQL or the filer, but my site loads almost too fast now.

Thanks DH :)

My sites were slow for the past couple of days. Page load speeds now are back up to normal. They seem really fast as they have been dragging painfully for the past week.

I’m glad to see it resolved and I’m glad I waited it out. I hope this is the end of this issue.

douche. I’m not hosting with DH, but my clients are. That’s why I still check here.

Come on. You can’t have “codered” without “livewire.” May as well add one called “gamefuel” too.

Well, I don’t know what the issue is this time, but I wish LOWBUDGETHOST releases my domain name so I can transfer it to another place, and stop billing me for a service they are not providing.

This is unacceptable! I had one minute of downtime! I lost THOUSANDS of DOLLARS which … and DH … support … one MINUTE!

any other smart ass comments? pfft

Does ‘pfft’ actually make you feel inteligent, moron? In spite of the fact it makes you look rather braindead?

the only person who looks like a fuckhead here is you james, so stfu.

omg james look at your website - wtf you retard learn some basic html at least

My HTML skills are just fine. Which is more than I can say for your ability to actually construct a proper sentence. You sir fail at life.

This issue is not fixed. not fixed, not fixed, not fixed, not fixed.

I had at least 3-4 days spotty uptime across 6 sites, and all completely down except for email for the entire weekend.

Support email:

> 1. why isn’t this on the dreamhoststatus.com page?

It actually was, the first few times it happened. I’m not sure why the
admins didn’t put it up as an unresolved issue though, as it keeps
popping up recently and isn’t fully solved yet. There is a quick *fix*
any admin can do when it starts being really slow that makes it respond
again instantly, which we have been using to bandaid it while we try to
figure out the issue.

> 2. how will I know when it is fixed?

We will post to dreamhoststatus when it’s fixed for good.

> 3. what is the resolution?

At present, the admins are trying to identify whether this is happening
because of a specific site hosted on it or if we are hitting a bug in
Solaris (the operating system this filer is using). Identifying and
fixing this is the current focus of our chief storage admin.

STILL DOWN.

My sites are still up & down again and it’s been at least since last Fri that this problem occurred.

The #1 priority of any host is Uptime. Keeping the host UP and running.

If the host isn’t able to keep sites running then what’s the point?

My sites on geyser are still lagging big time…
Woohoo, and it just went down.
Time to contact support……..

If the host isn’t able to keep sites running then what’s the point?

To piss you off. Mission accomplished. Go Dreamhost!

I have found a new host and will be moving all my sites there shortly. Bye dreamhost. No uptime. Not even my personal blog which is super small and just for a few friends will stay here. It is not worth the trouble to stay with dreamhost if the sites can not stay up.

Cool, the post.

Thanks for the information.
