Janky mail server issues
Very sorry about the recurring issues affecting mail service on our ‘janky’ server cluster. You may be experiencing slowness or unavailable mail if your mail server is listed as janky under Account Status on the control panel (upper right corner).
We apologize for all the inconvenienence this has been causing you, and we’re working on resolving this for good. Please check back for updates.
–Update– Tue Oct 16 11:08:40 PDT 2007
As of now the symptoms seem to have subsided for the moment. One of the file servers for janky is having problems keeping up with demand. We’re migrating a good portion of its data to another filer server right now. These measures should resolve the issue for good. We apologize for the recurrence of the problems, we’re confident they’ll be better shortly.

Oh god, not again, why janky is gettin’ to much issues .. :[
October 16th, 2007 at 10:00 am
Resolved for good, just like it has been the last half dozen times in the last three weeks.
Do what you need to do to fix it FOREVER, Dreamhost. I’ve been with you guys since 2001 and only when I start a new job and recommend “this excellent budget host that I know” do you flake out. Figures…

Lol, so true, Paul - same here. Been with them for years, and so I decide to switch my company’s hosting to them, and WHAM!!
=/

October 16th, 2007 at 11:54 am
I just hope this time “for good” doesn’t mean “for today”.
October 16th, 2007 at 12:02 pm
And I am getting send mail errors on Spacey :S
October 16th, 2007 at 12:20 pm
Does this mean that people sending mails to us will get their mails bounced back too? I just sent out a bunch of job apps last weekend…
October 16th, 2007 at 12:34 pm
another 12 hours, another issue. no surprises.
October 16th, 2007 at 12:46 pm
Just looking back at the entries in the status blog, this is six filer issues in the last twelve days - and three of them just on the janky cluster.
Although I normally side with DH when people start complaining about service, this has me a bit worried - especially when this is the second time in less than two weeks that they’ve reported that the filer for the same cluster has had “most” of its data transferred. Although I’m not affected by this current problem, it seems to me that they really don’t know what’s happening and therefore they don’t know how to prevent it on other clusters.

you are close to attaining enlightenment my friend.

we are getting full email services nice and fast in the middle of the day. first time in DAYS. just after i got all the neccessary approvals to jump ship to a new host. go figure.
October 16th, 2007 at 5:06 pm
All the necessary approvals for a $9.95/mo expense? Sounds like a big operation. I’m kidding. ALL businesses that rely on email should run their own mail server and/or have DNS redundancy or dedicated hosting as well as an email pre-catch to spool mail until your mail server comes back online if it goes down. If a business makes ANY money at all and relies heavily on 1 part to keep business running, it’s just not logical to skimp out on that 1 part. Sorry, these posts make me laugh sometimes.

hey IDIOTS
I pay for your hosting service and I can’t SNED OUT MY OWN FUCKING EMAIL
Meanwhile I get spammed from people using “Spunkymail.dreamhost.com” as a return address!
THIS IS FUCKED UP SHIT. I PAY YOU SO I CAN HAVE EMAIL FOR MY WORK AND NOW YOU ARE FUCKING IT UP!
THIS IS FUCKED. YOU SOLD ME SOMETHING AND DID NOT PEFORM AS ADVERTISED FUCK YOU RED VOLTA!

i know this was joke was covered the last time janky went down, but maybe now is really the time to rename it. or replace it and name it NotJanky. just a thought.

Am I dreaming or does dreamhost not have a phone number? I’ve asked support for the # so I could call and demand my money back. I signed up 3 weeks agao and haven’t had a full day of working email yet. i think I deserve a refund and a new host with email that works. has anyone ever called these guys?
October 17th, 2007 at 2:55 am
@BenA - There is no direct phone support. If you’re (as it sounds) still within the 97-day money back period, simply go to the panel, under Billing, then Manage Account. Right under the account name there is a link to “Close this account”.

you are absolutely correct mr. volta. and if i wasn’t a part time network admin working for a small but excellent private school i would run our own mail server. but … if a company (like dreamhost) advertises it’s reliability of service, and i can save some money for the school ($120 a year for dreamhost email, versus server hardware & setup/maintence hours) to funnel into things like say, teacher salaries/benefits and student services, i don’t think it’s too much to ask that dreamhost’s services work more consistently than they seem to.
nonetheless, mr. volta, thanks for the snarky comments and admin 101 suggestions. you make me laugh as well.

The email I am now receiving in the account that my email forwards to is not allowing me to respond to the email. Is this because the data is being migrated over?
October 17th, 2007 at 12:37 pm
@jung - Where does DH advertise reliability of service? All the DH ads I’ve ever seen stress bandwidth, storage, large numbers of email accounts, but not reliability.
October 18th, 2007 at 4:58 pm
guys, if email uptime is of that much concern to you, maybe you shouldn’t use dreamhost’s mail servers
i’m using google apps for mail and it is working great with perfect uptime as of so far, it IS google after all
October 19th, 2007 at 6:59 am
EMAIL DOWN AGAIN?
October 19th, 2007 at 1:26 pm
Still messed up…
October 23rd, 2007 at 4:14 pm
Very, very broken.
As far as I can tell mail is received and readable in webmail ok.
Forwarding is very spotty…about 1/3 of my mail accounts are forwarding properly. Others just receive into webmail and don’t forward.
Where do I call and yell about moving mail service off this server????
November 17th, 2007 at 2:00 pm
Don’t know if it’s starting up again. Getting about 10 bytes/second transfer rate. Yes, that’s 10 bytes, not 10KB or 10MB…
Downloading a 4.16KB email is taking about five minutes…
11/17/07 - 3:58p CST
Managed to get from 600 bytes to 1.42KB downloaded in the time it took to type this…
