Network Issue

Posted (October 17th, 2007 at 12:08 pm PST) by Terri

One of our core routers is dropping about half of its packets at the moment. Our admin staff is working very hard to resolve this problem right now. This will cause outages and slowdowns for the majority of our customers.

We apologize for the inconvenience this is causing. We will post again when we have more information.

Update: The router ran out of memory and caused it to drop packets. It is slowly recovering right now, so services may remain slow for a bit, but will be improving very soon. We’re still digging into the router to see why it ran out of memory.

Update: This is resolved now. All issues related to the network should be resolved. If you are still encountering a problem, please contact us via tech support. Our efforts to optimize our network continue.

Oh yes, I’m noticing this..

Thanks guys… I think it’s been happening since yesterday morning.

thank goodness they are acknowledging they have a system wide cluster fuck,

the story of dreamhost is not going to end well if these types of problems persist.

Dreamhost is going to need a top to bottom network architecture redo before long. I wish I had never signed on…

time to upgrade from hamsters to load balancing ferrets! ;)

I am really not sure about “core routers is dropping” since I got MySQL connection errors too. What does an internal webserver trying to talk to a MySQL server have to do with a router ?

I would recommend using Pingdoms FREE monitoring service to monitor your site activity / downtime activity.

Thanks guys!

This has sealed the deal for me. I just began a transfer to BlueHost.com for one of my clients (Manufactuers Advantage.com)

The dropping of e-mail is epidemic and the customer support has been -2 just infront of K-Mart.

I will keep my persoanl account with DreamHost because I can personally deal with it, but when my clients start breathing down my neck then I have to do something.

Hopefully BlueHost will do the trick.

Dunno what happened there, but when it came back from being down, ZIPPY! Super fast! Fastest it’s been in eons!
Reallllllllllllllly hope that lasts!

Yep, I too was noticing this while helping my co-worker transition his own site to his new dreamhost account. Dreamhost and the other server went down about twice, but been back up since then, figured it was probably routing issues if the entire network went down for a moment. Good to see its being worked on.

WTF. Goes up, comes down, goes up, comes down. All I ever want from Dreamhost is clear information. If it is down, why it is down. If it is going to be down for awhile, tell me. I understand that Dreamhost is a bit frankensteinian, but couldn’t their admin at least keep us informed?
disgruntled and in the dark

@jazzrabbit - a core router routes traffic from one part of the DH network to another. Your MySQL database is on a different server than the Apache that’s serving your web pages. If the core router is dropping packets, then it will affect a major part of the overall network traffic - which is why DH has posted this as High severity.

@n-ron - What other information do you need other than that the router is dropping packets? This is far more information than you would ever get from most hosting companies.

The update says this is resolved but I’m still having trouble with my sites (I’ll send an email but thought others might want to know).

LMAO at the idiot that thinks moving to Bluehost is a step up.

It’s the internet. Shit happens.

It only seems like it happens more here because they have more customers than most hosts combined AND they give them a site to whine on. What other hosts let whiny customers shit all over their company sites? Even the ones with forums tend to censor them & ban whiners.

Yep… sure sucks being with an open/honest company!

I can not connect to my db. I get
Cannot connect to MySQL: User reviewjoomla already has more than ‘max_user_connections’ active connections

or just this
Cannot connect to MySQL:

Never had this problem until todays problem. So far dreamhost has told me its my problem and not theirs. I can not get on my site to even look at the logs to see if it is my problem.

We only average about 10 visitors at a time so I doubt it is the max user issue.

Dreamhost has been good to get things up and running quick. There is a lot of hardware and configurations that are involved in web hosting. Think you can do better, set it up.

I wish I had never signed on…

So do we. You and every other crying sap.

You might be trolling, but what the heck..
While you didn’t state what plan you’re on, I would advise you, as I’m sure many others would to /find a host with a sla/ if your website is mission critical. Its common, professional practice. Common sense too, I would have thought.

They’re breathing down /your/ neck because they’re /your/ client who pay /you/ to ensure you pick a host suitable that fits the criteria they’ve given you. If I was in your position, i’d be re-evaluating my methodology and business practice - not posting confusingly ignorant posts.

There have been a million posts to this end, and I’m sure there’ll be more.

LMAO at the idio that thinks Bluehost is a step down.

I currently have over 20 sites accounts on Dreamhost and over 10 on BlueHost. The ones on DreamHost are forever having problems while the ones on BlueHost run smooth as silk.

“It’s the internet” Oh really? I didn’t realize that.

Of course stuff happens, but with Dreamhost it seems to be happening more and more often than with others.

is wilshire down?

i have 4 sites not working at all.
no ftp either.
i can connect to my email.

thanks guys - it’s all good now.

October 17th, 2007 at 8:20 pmOh no, not again Says:

my site on titan is now down - looks like this is not fixed.

i’m not smart enough to know why my website stopped working this week. just like i don’t want to know how to install a new transmission in my car - i only want to be able to change the gears and DRIVE.
so it’s bad enough that i’ve lost two days of work but the last crazy response i got from someone at DH said that my site was working fine. that’s when i blew a fuse. if not being able to navigate away from my home page without going into a coma or dying of old age while you waited for the page to load was his idea of working fine i am definitely in the WRONG place for web hosting.
i think i am moving.
i went almost nine months without a problem. i guess cruel reality had to invade my happy dream sometime.
i know y’all aren’t tech support but do you think there is hope after they finish their “work” this friday night????

Bonnie, you should upload something simple to your domain, maybe a page full of nothing but plain text and a couple of lightweight jpg images and see if that loads fast… this could determine if the issue is with your server or your site.

“i’m not smart enough to know why my website stopped working this week. just like i don’t want to know how to install a new transmission in my car - i only want to be able to change the gears and DRIVE.”

Very sorry, but running a website just doesn’t work that way… if you operate your own website, you have no choice but to either get dirty or hire someone that can to do it for you… just like with cars.

when i was uploaded some little jpegs i first noticed the problem (several days ago). i use ftp upload and they took a lot longer than usual to go up. then i noticed the whole site was very slow. i had my web designer look at the site and he said definitely the server. since then i’ve had several SLOW repsonses from customer service and they all said, yes, there is a problem with the server but the last one said no, your site works just fine EVEN THOUGH IT ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT! the customer service here is awful. it takes repeated tickets to get a response hours and hours later (or not at all). one said they would get back to me with some information and all i heard was SILENCE.
i KNOW how to operate my website. but i DON’T know what the heck goes on over at dreamhost nor do i WANT to know. i only want them to host my site the way they have in the last nine months and when there is a problem, FIX IT or at least tell me what is going on.
i’m packing my bags and am out of here. i only hope i can rescue my site and take it with me.
i’m madder than i was yesterday and that’s pretty upset.

I see this is a few days old, but looks like the issue is back… It is taking forever to log into the panel to see what is going on, so I am posting here… I believe my server is ’shekel’:

thanks good post

“LMAO at the idio that thinks Bluehost is a step down.”

In my case Bluehost was a step down. Bluehost Blues!

Bluehost should be given an award for their utmost incompetence and pathetic service. Out of the 20+ web hosting companies I have used, Bluehost has been the very worst. Bluehost is not only terrible. they are spectacularly terrible.

Cool, the post.

Thanks for the information.
