Major networking issues

We are currently experiencing some major issues with one of our core routers which is causing enormous amounts of packet loss to and from our network.

We have our network engineering team working on the issue right now, and things are definitely better but we are still experiencing some issues. We hope to have a resolution very shortly.

We very sincerely apologize for the inconvenience, we understand how frustrating this is for everyone.

- UPDATE Thu Oct 18 15:38:27 PDT 2007 -

Due to the issues we are currently experiencing, we are moving some of tomorrow night’s scheduled maintenance up. There will still be a maintenance window tomorrow night, but the time required will be much less. Currently services are being restored. We will post another update as soon as we are back in the clear.

- UPDATE Thu Oct 18 16:50 Pacific 2007 -

We believe that all major issues are currently resolved. We are still doing minor cleanup work, please write in to technical support if you are still having problems.

The catalyst to this outage was a scheduled turn-up of a new internet uplink, another gigabit of bandwidth. This is normally a smooth transition, our routers add the new link to the routing tables, and we slowly migrate bandwidth usage on to the new path until the uplinks are balanced. Yesterday during the testing phase, the link went live unexpectedly, since the link was supposed to be down on the remote side, causing our secondary router to run out of memory. The link was nearly immediately shut down and the router recovered. We then knew we should put it on to our primary router.

Today we did the scheduled turn up with our bandwidth provider on the phone. All went smoothly for about 30 minutes. The router brought the link online and began using it immediately. 30 minutes later, our secondary router promptly crashed, running out of memory again for no apparent reason. It took us around 20 minutes to diagnose that, as network and router access was extremely slow. Once we determined that, we immediately got our network consultant on the phone who recommended and immediate shutdown of our secondary router, as these were the issues we saw a few months ago and thought we had fixed.

We moved the two live uplinks from the secondary router to the primary one and brought them online. Once the secondary router was cut off from the primary one, the failover software performed correctly and migrated the default gateways over, and the network started to look up. Due to a problem in the version of IOS we are running on our router, we have been spending the last hour or so re-balancing the load on our uplinks. This bug should be fixed in tomorrow nights software upgrade.

Most of the servers recovered on their own, with only around 30 or so needing reboots. We are still cleaning up some loose ends. We did not do the software upgrade today while the network was broken due to the inherent risk involved. Tomorrow night our network consultant will be on-site to ensure the upgrade goes smoothly. Tomorrow during the day we will be rebuilding our secondary router to have the same hardware as our primary one. We have all of the hardware on the shelf, it was just waiting for tomorrow nights window to get the router offloaded.

Our site/email went down, then came right back up. I’m glad this is at least happening toward the end of the day, and that it’s not just a continuation of the Janky nightmare.

Thanks for the good communication on this one.

  2. n0yd Says:

    Ah, what else is new.

Dreamhost: You’ve got domains that need hosting? We’ve got problems.

  3. n0yd Says:

Maybe you guys should stop trying to stuff so much into so little? Try expanding your hardware resources a bit, that way stuff isn’t so overloaded constantly. It may help your seemingly horrid PR image lately as far as reliability and uptime goes…

  4. Mickey Says:

Thumbs Up to DH for telling us about the problems, hopefully this can be sorted soon as we have no site working and these problems have been recurring for a few weeks now.

  5. ricky Says:

the next time this happens, i want you guys to …stop….. and pull your heads out of your asses so that you can see what your fixing…….. half thanks for the half ass service…..

  6. UserOfPsypets Says:

Well at least you gave us notice! ^^ I guess thanks.

  11. Pete Says:

http://ww2db.com is down, I guess it’s because of that reason…

  12. Antonio Bourassa Says:

Wow, right as my client calls to get help logging in.
    My web site goes down.

  13. Kevin Says:

Damn. I wish I got as much vacation time as the dreamhost servers do.

  14. VOO Says:

The Great Spirit suggests giving your servers and router a sage and sweetgrass smoke bath to drive out the evil spirits that Lunarpages has used their witchery to curse you with. Sure, defeating them on the courts would help weaken their spell, but the sage and sweetgrass would bring more robust results. The Great Spirit also says not to worry about smoke damage to the servers and router, as they will be protected during the ceremony.

  15. Will Says:

    GBLX is pure-evil!

  16. DH = BS Says:

What is with people and giving thumbs up to DH for “letting us know”.
WTF do I care? Site is down, that’s what I care. When my site is down I know DH is screwing again. I don’t need for them to “let me know”. I know, I’m used to them having some router or some shit going down every week.

  17. Justin Says:

Thank you for the notice. This was starting to get very frustrating.

  18. ryptide Says:

This is like putting a “DIP” sign right after the dip in the road.

    “You’ve Just Hit A Dip”

    Thanks…

  19. frustrated Says:

Please fix this issue ASAP so I can login to the panel and cancel my account. Thanks!

  20. VOO Says:

“What is with people and giving thumbs up to DH for “letting us know”.”

Because MOST hosts leave you in the dark when there are issues… not only that there ARE issues, but WHAT the issue is.

  21. Tuan Says:

All you people who are thanking dreamhost - would you say thank you to a waiter that spits in your food for telling you? Would you say thank you to your utility company for telling you they cut off your electricity? Would you say thank you if I tell you I’m going to punch you in the face, and then do it?

  22. JP Says:

I just signed up with DH, maybe I made the wrong decision?

  23. Sidney Says:

“Because MOST hosts leave you in the dark when there are issues… not only that there ARE issues, but WHAT the issue is.”

So what, do they get a purple heart for the warning after the storm? Doesn’t change much I’m afraid.

Counter-point: WHAT the issue may be, the problem is that no matter how it is resolved, it is persistent and reoccurring.

  24. VOO Says:

“This is like putting a “DIP” sign right after the dip in the road.

    “You’ve Just Hit A Dip”

    Thanks…”

I suppose that you are expecting clairvoyance? “Oh shit guys, The Great Spirit has just informed us that we will be having trouble later today… He was very vague this time, so we can’t say for sure what it is, but in the vision there was a kitten with poor grammar and spelling playing around with our routers, so we’ll be looking in that direction.”

  25. kyle Says:

thanks for posting about this problem, it’s a refreshing change from the usual sweep it under the rug approach.

on the other hand, that doesn’t excuse the fact that dreamhost is horribly unreliable. I’ve hung on way longer than I should have. I’m out of here as soon as I can find a reasonable alternative.

  26. George Says:

Our sites work … and now they don’t …. and now … they do … and now … ?!?!
Good luck with restoring the routers

  27. VOO Says:

“So what, do they get a purple heart ”

Purple Hearts are for being wounded in battle, oh greatly educated one.

  28. Nanuciao Says:

All is down, even http://www.dreamhost.com !!!
    :-(

  29. Ei Says:

    I hate computers LOL :)

  30. Umbaglo Says:

Tuan: Note that what you describe are intentional acts, however. The analogy is flawed because what is currently happening is not, in fact, DH deciding to turn the servers off just to annoy people, but an unexpected event.

  31. Mongo Says:

jajaja no me lo puedo creer, no funciona nada!

DH te estas cubriendo de gloria.

  32. Pete Says:

My web server seems to be up now, but database server seems to be wacked still.

  33. demods Says:

What I don’t understant is that DH servers (especially DH Status) never go down, but only clients’. We pay the price, DH host their own domains. What a shame…!!!

  34. Tuan Says:

    @Umbaglo:

Okay then. Let’s say I accidentally punch a dude in the face a couple times a month, and apologize after each incident. Would I deserve thanks each time?

  35. Pete Says:

    @demods: That’s a good observation.

@DH: Hey, can you move my site to wherever you’re hosting Dreamhost Status? LOL

  36. Enchirito Says:

Just waiting for the opportune time to switch over to Media Temple…gonna be a pain in the arse…f-ing A.

  37. Pete Says:

@Tuan: Yes you should. Also, if you blog about the punching, you’ll also get a Best Corporate Blog award at it, too.

  38. Jofo Says:

dreamhost blog + refresh button = endless entertainment

  39. Tony Says:

LOL, I love it. Another day, another Dreamhost slowdown or complete outage…

But at least they do tell you about it. Come on people, stop dreaming, start hosting! ;-)

  40. Daniel Says:

The difference is, Tuan, Dreamhost isn’t spitting in anyone’s food. Dreamhost is the waiter that’s informing you that something’s up with the preparation of your food, and that they’re actually making it better for you.

Chances are — if you had that waiter, you’d be willing to patiently for a few extra minutes, knowing that you’re probably going to get something a little better than you had expected…

  41. Matt Says:

[] It is Dreamhost’s ethical duty to let their customers know what is going on, and when they can expect to fix it.

[] This is a service we all pay for - not because it’s cheap, but because it is good.

[] “If you don’t like it, there’s the door.” I don’t like to be blunt, but I also don’t like to see negative commentary in a post designed to not only help you in your time of crisis, but a post that is trying to let you know “Oops, we screwed up and are trying to fix it.”

[] To DH = BS: OMG Ur Site is Down? Do the math. Site is down for 5 hours, and let’s say it’s during your high traffic hours. You’re getting 500 hits an hour, half of them returning visitors. That’s 250 new visitors that are going to see it and say “Oh well.” 50% of that 250 are not going to be coming back. 125 of them WILL. The returning visitors (or regulars) will also come back. 375 individual people WILL COME BACK, and you will have lost 125. Now, unless you just happen to have the most amazing site ever (or you live on your server for some strange reason) this will do NOTHING to your average website.

I know, it’s not about that - it’s about money. You pay for something therefore it must work. Life doesn’t work like that, and as soon as you (and everyone else who is constantly complaining) realize this, you’ll understand that barking complaints is not going to get this train rolling any faster.

Kudos to the team - I’ve been a customer off and on for going on 3 or 4 years. I take it as it comes.

As someone who lives in REALITY, I know things are prone to break (especially when there is high traffic and technology involved). Good luck to you guys, and keep up the good work.

    Signed,
    A very satisfied customer.

  42. VOO Says:

“(especially DH Status) never go down”

It is REMOTELY hosted for this very reason… check again, Dreamhost.com IS down.

  44. ricky Says:

The point is that no one can fault DH on the level of information they give out when there is a problem but they can fault DH on the recent level of “Technical Problems” that they have been having. I have websites on DH and with a couple of other hosting companies and there are times when I would trade a little of their openness for a little better planning, a little better organisation and a little less downtime and slowdown time. The only reason my main site is with DH is because of price but if my business depended on it then I wouldn’t use them and I’ve been with now for several years.

They are not the company they used to be

  45. Calamitynews.com Says:

why not visit calamitynews and waste some time whilst waiting for DH to get their shit together.

  46. GGS Says:

Double redundancy should make half still work. Triple redundancy should make two thirds still work. If zero works, either redundancy isn’t well implemented or it doesn’t really exist. Am I correct?

  47. Tuan Says:

    @Daniel:

This would be true, except that the waiter is always telling me something is up with the food, several times during the meal. Good for the waiter, but I should probably not eat there again.

Which makes me a bitter fool for being here still :(

  48. Jamie Says:

You think DH is bad? Running Wordpress on Media Temple is like watching paint dry.

  49. Pete Says:

@Calamitynews.com: I would, but I think you’re down. You must be a DH customer =P

  50. PA Says:

I’ve been a customer since almost the beginning and I’ve recommended a good number of others to join the service, but this is really getting old. The first time it happens is one thing, even the second through one hundred times, I can cut you a little slack since I wasn’t expecting business quality hosting for the price, but at some point, you really have to wonder why it keeps happening.

DH if you continually have issues with Cisco routers, and they can’t seem to figure out what the problem is, time to move to Juniper or someone else. This would never fly where I work or I’d be fired. How about an actual resolution to the problem instead of the continuing “Woe is us … router acting up again … didn’t fix it the last time .. trying again … keep your fingers crossed and say a prayer …”

Time to start acting like a real business and fix it.

  51. Daniel Says:

we understand how frustrating this is for everyone.

    Belive me - you don’t.

Just mailed your support about the very bad connection to my site - the aswer was:

Sorry about that. I checked your other sites on this machine and they
appear to be loading very quickly. I noticed that you are using DNS
servers from another company, and this could be part of the problem. I
checked the load on this machine:

    thanatos: 01:30 PM# uptime

    13:30:18 up 13 days, 22:04, 5 users, load average: 4.80, 2.71, 1.68

And it is very low. The domain is not actually resolving for me at all.

Sorry guys, are you kidding me? I know when there is a problem with my DNS-servers, you don’t seem to know when there is a problem on your servers

  52. DH = BS Says:

That’s BS. I have used many other hosts with 0 problems or the very rare once a year problem. But DH is down almost every week. And you say “thank you for telling me”?

JP, take your money while you can. Go to any other host. I had bluehost.com and never had a problem. I think the textdrive.com folks now have a cheaper “lite” version.

  53. eric Says:

i can’t wait til my contract is up. so frustrating this happens so regularly…

  54. ajt Says:

    You guy’s fucking suck shit.

  55. Mika Says:

@Matt: I dunno about you, but if I am shopping for something and a merchant’s site is down for 5 hrs straight, I won’t be returning to that URL.

  56. Daniel Says:

    Tuan,

You have a choice, and you understand where the door is if you’re dissatisfied. Am I correct?

  57. Blanko Says:

Just great. I sent out a promotion to 2000 people 1 hour ago.

  58. Everly Brothers Says:

ALL I HAVE TO DO IS DREAM, DREAM, DREAM, DREAM…

  59. Money Blue Book Says:

I would like to have my domain hosted on the same site as Dreamhoststatus.com as well :)
    -Raymond

  60. Squish Says:

OMG THE NERVE! I pay at LEAST 5 dollars a month for this service! How dare it EVER go down!!! For all you bitching, if you need a reliable webhost for your up and coming 10 million hit a day website that’s making you the next Warren Buffett, perhaps you should consider spending a few more dollars on hosting.

  61. Odden Says:

WE ARE ALL GETTING TIRED OF THE POOR QUALITY OF THE SERVICES YOU ARE PROVIDING, GUYS. DREAMHOST IS BECOMING A NIGHTMARE. Do it better or leave it.

  62. Eric Seiden Says:

All sites down, services down, nothing’s working.

  63. Tuan Says:

    @Daniel:

Yes. After the last barrage of downtime a month or so ago, I was this || close to quitting for mediatemple, but for some reason, I decided to stick with these guys - I figured 4 years of prior good service outweighs one bad month. And now, after having paid for my next year of service with DH, I am regretting my decision.

    Like I said, I’m a bitter fool.

  64. to all the tools Says:

    You buy budget hosting…………

I work at a huge company with our network run by an apparently professional company. One of their guys logged into our system to do some work and pressed the wrong button shutting down the entire network. Business shut down. We had no idea what was going on until 4 hours later when they decided to advise us of the issue.

so when you pay $100 a year for web hosting I feel you are getting good value.

We pay 150,000 a month for the service we get. May be just as many issues.

  65. DH = BS Says:

    DH hosts dreamhoststaus.com with a different provider……

  66. GGS Says:

Everly Brothers also said, “Wake Up, Little Susie!”

  67. Daniel Says:

lol. I like that one, Squish. Good call. How many link and spam harvesters are complaining on here at the moment — running spam forwarding and ad-link sites for the sole purpose of well — a lame attempt to make money and force-whack the servers with their crap sites?

For 5 bucks a month, I’d say they’re making out like bandits.

  68. Money Blue Book Says:

About the Media Temple comment…has anyone had any experience with their service? It’s supposed to be fast…but I know nothing else beyond that.
    -Raymond

  69. Daniel Says:

    DH=BS,

No, Dreamhost has the Status site on a dedicated box that isn’t on the main network.

  70. Jason Says:

I’ve never had any problems until today…

  71. Losers Says:

Whatever - we’re all losers who signed up with this company. We have no one else to blame but ourselves. As soon as my contract runs out, I gonna leave.

  72. britton Says:

Wow. Maybe I’m just on a more reliable server, but I don’t have a lot of problems with DH. I’ve been with them for several years and I have only had a few minor problems– most of which are resolved very quickly. My mail is down, but my site is not. I am confident they will resolve this quickly. If you want 100% uptime, you are not paying enough.

  73. Different Matt Says:

My gosh… I love when my site is down. It gives me time to breath, stop, think, lose money, stop, think, breath, lose more money, and finally… lose more money.

This seriously sucks. I’m so tired of this. Why does a core router screw up and we’re all down? How come there isn’t any redundancy on the routers? How come there isn’t load balancing for your routers? This isn’t hard! Why not use clustered Linux servers to do the routing? I’ve been a network engineer for many years and I’ve never had these kind of router issues. I don’t care HOW much bandwidth these carry. Look at many other service providers, (i.e. youtube, aol, yahoo, google) they all have multiple levels of servers, dns’, routers, LOCATIONS, etc. There has GOT to be some reason for nothing like this being already setup for DH.

  74. Hunger Says:

I made about $10,000 last year in affiliate payments from Dreamhost for referring people to them… their $97 payout is great. Anyone know of a better host that offers comparable affiliate rewards?

  75. Different Matt Says:

I’m already looking for another host (Before I see messages from people saying I should move).

  76. Chris Says:

Ignore the haters, they don’t understand how hard it is to keep a service running 24/7.

They sound like they expect to be informed of problems *before* they happen. If you knew the problem was coming, it probably woudln’t have happened. ;D

    Screw the unrealistic expectations.

    Good luck out there!

  77. Jamie Says:

    Yeah, I’m with britton…
I don’t face these issues as frequently as you all seem to be.

  78. Daniel Says:

    Seriously then, Tuan,

If you honestly think your experience at Media Temple will be any better — by all means try it.

I will say from my own experience, and the experience of many of my buddies — that you’ll find yourself in an even worse situation. (Unless you’re an actual sponsored site with the MT logo — you’ll be on an even worse network than you are here.)

    Good luck to you, really.

  79. mxz Says:

@to all the tools: Let me be the first to say that whoever in your company made the decision to keep paying 150,000 a month for that service should probably be fired.

Uptime guarantee comes with a service plan. No matter what you’re paying for it, if its in the service plan, it better be delivered.

  82. Kazuya_UK Says:

My sites are all down, they did come back up briefly, then down again. Hope it is fixed soon as I have work to do!

  83. Bob Says:

LOL! How the hell are my sites still up and running when DH is down??? wow!

You guys are great! Thanks :)

  84. kopper Says:

    “Dreamhost is becoming a nightmare”… That’s a good one!

  85. Tuan Says:

    @Daniel:

Then what service would you recommend?

  86. Mark Says:

Honestly, I’ve had loads of small outages, but for some reason I just can’t get futzed about this one. At least the status page is up so I know it’s not just my site. If it bothered me I know precisely where I’d take my site, but I’m not annoyed enough yet to pull the trigger. I’m enjoying the comments, though. Vent on, brothers.

  87. Rob Says:

I’ve used Media temple before. Honestly their customer service sucks. The only way you can contact someone is via phone and if you do it through their control panel it takes 2-5 days for a response. Urgency is not a concern to media temple they just have really really good marketing.

Despite Dreamhost flaws I will gladly stay with them. Every site is bound to have down time some day.

  88. LOL Says:

I think dreamhost just imploded, I can’t even reach their site.

  89. twiddling thumbs Says:

all work has stopped, while you “hope for a resolution”? I feel so much better knowing this!

  90. Delio Says:

What’s the deal with dreamhost’s dedicated servers? I check their dedicated offerings and they just forward you to hosting.com … are they no longer offering dedicated servers themselves??

  91. Daniel Says:

I’ve been with Dreamhost for almost 10 years, Tuan. I’ve had the fewest issues with Dreamhost, as is also the case for so many of my design, developer, and business friends who have stayed with Dreamhost throughout the years.

No unreasonable complaints from this end.

  92. Chuck Says:

I recently lost a customer because of site outages. Their site was up 99% of the time, but it just always seemed to happen at the worst time. This is my fault because I knew there was a problem and I didn’t move their site.

The reason I switched to Dreamhost in the first place was because my old web hosting company didn’t have 24/7 support. My web site went down on a Friday afternoon. It was a holiday weekend so it wasn’t back up until Tuesday. I forfeited 6 months of hosting fees and switched to Dreamhost.

My sites have gone down but tech support always has them back up withing a couple of hours. Sure, I’d rather they didn’t go down at all, but this is SO much better than what I had before.

  93. mxz Says:

Media Temple has better redundancy so even if the server that you’re actually being hosted on is slow, it is made up by having that same data being replicated and served across other servers.

I’ve been with DH for over 2 years now, and I’ve finally made the decision to switch. As some people noted, its a real pain in the a$$, but so is being unable to access my own site when I pay money for it.

Sorry DH, I like your service, your features and your great customer support, but if you can’t keep my site up and running, I need to go elsewhere.

Note: I’ve been running a few of my sites on Media Temple while having others on DH, and I haven’t seen any of the MT sites go down yet. That doesn’t mean that there won’t be downtime, but I’m just comparing a month with MT (no downtimes) to a month with DH (5 separate downtimes). Or I guess it could be a _really_ bad month for DH eh?

  94. Umbaglo Says:

On a separate note, while I do understand that having sites go down is a very annoying thing, I wonder if people really bother to look at things over the long run. For pretty much the last year, I’ve had an uptime monitor on my site, and even with the “chronic” problems people bemoan DH as having, I still have over 99.7% uptime. You know, for how much I pay a year, I think that’s actually really good.

  95. truegrime Says:

Seriously. I love DH, I so love DH. Even when you have maddening outages like these. As some others have previously stated:

    *this really sucks
*Thank you DH for notifying your customers of what the real problems are.

everyone has a choice, I choose to ride it out. DH seems to live and learn.

  96. mindtonic Says:

I just joined dreamhost and within the first three days the whole thing has blown up. This is quite ridiculous as I cannot even work. Perhaps I should return to my old server…. and I thought this would be better….

  97. Eileen Says:

I’ve only been with Dreamhost for a few months… and my sites have been down and or so slow that they are inoperable a number of times. In fact off hand I can recall enough incidents that if they were spaced out correctly would equal to at least one problem for every month I’ve been with DH.

For the vets… is this normal?

  98. Tuan Says:

    @Daniel:

If DH is the best, that is truly depressing :(

  99. Charles Merriam Says:

What is the uptime and response time distribution? DreamHost appears down for now. Not slow. Down.

How often? Does anyone keep the stats?

  100. OldTimer Says:

I’ve been with Dreamhost since early 2001. I don’t remember this type of problem ever occurring years back… it is recent. The fact that it happens every month or so is extra annoying. As well, the downtimes are very long. I can’t survive a multi-hour downtime… one or two minutes is fine. But not this!

  101. Luis Says:

Man i wish this blog where a meeting on a field to sell some t-shirts with the stamp “I love Downhost” :)

    @Eileen:

Not historically, no - but this summer/fall has been a season of despair for us poor DH customers.

  104. PA Says:

Yeah … been with them for 10 years and really enjoyed it until the last year or so. Been extremely bad …

  105. Fuck Says:

Fuck. Fuckfuck. Fuck butt. Butt monkey. Fuck.

    Fix, please.

  106. mxz Says:

@Eileen: Tuan is right, this summer seems to be especially bad when it comes to DH downtimes. Too frequent and too long.

  107. jimslim Says:

Dreamhost is terrible… My site is down for the fifth time in as many months… If they would spend LESS time and money putting up
silly pictures on the home page.. and MORE time and money on servers, their customers would be happier and the service would be better!!!

  108. Stab Me In The Head Says:

with an icepick, please.. I just renewed with DH.

  109. Adnan Says:

    Daag,

I thought that Dreamhost PS wasn’t supposed to have any issues. :)

  110. Cheap Web Hosting Says:

Now I know why Google pushed me down in the rankings - the site has been on and off during the last week or so, because of the router problems.

then again with a discount coupon it only cost $22 a year so you cant really complain, but it would be nice if there were say two clusters and it switched to the one that did work

  115. Brian Roach Says:

DH is a bargain-basement hosting company. You get what you pay for. It’s sad that they used to be an awesome, reliable hosting solution (that cost a bit more money) but those days are now long gone. I canceled my original hosting plan and now just have the cheap one for when I want to throw something up on the web.

The only people I really feel sorry for are the ones who get suckered into paying more than $10/mo for this service. The “Strictly Business” plan should be renamed “Strictly Out of Business” as this would be the result of running a business here.

And to people who keep saying that *all* networks have these problems … no, they don’t. Ones that oversell and cost $10/mo to be on, however, do. Switching to another provider that costs $10/mo is not going to buy you any better reliability. Reliable hosting costs more than $10.

I just with there was a reliable shared hosting provider in the $40/mo range … it seems most of those have gone the way of DH.

    - Roach

  116. Rod Says:

OK, this just sucks. I worked out the run rate of my site and I’m losing $700-$800/day for each day that it’s down (this is high season). It doesn’t take very many days of that to make it worth switching to a boutique hosting company… :(

  117. Calamitynews.com Says:

wow, antar, can we say cunt now?

Who here’s sick of the people who bitch about the people who bitch about DH?

  118. Henry Says:

    Great work guys !!!
I don’t know about the rest of you, but my site went down for the first time for only 30m.
    Kepp up !

  119. Cooper Says:

I’ve been with Dreamhost for just over the 97 day cancellation limit…

Personally, I think things generally work pretty well. I was paying $170 a month for a dedicated server at Superb, now I’m about $6 a month. My server is faster, space is bigger, transfer is larger.

However when I go from $170 to $6, I don’t expect perfection. They only way they can offer this is to load the machines up. Problems will occur from time to time. I understand that some times are worse than others, and that some times are downright terrible.

As a former IT person, I know its a thankless job - you can never get things done quick enough, there is never enough uptime between downtimes.

Perhaps as time goes by, my opinion will change.

  120. Eileen Says:

@Tuan and @mxz Thanks for the replies.

I wonder… are the “newer” folks getting screwed over because we’re on newer servers? I know the present problem (and the one yesterday) affect everyone, but I’ve also had severe slow time when I know that others with DH didn’t have the same thing and also long after I read on this blog that Dreamhost says things are already “resolved”.

  121. the horror Says:

I wish DH wasn’t down so much… i don’t really need my website, but I can’t even send emails. I wish the servers wouldnt go down so much. It seems to be happening more and more…

  122. free ipod touch Says:

Ugh, my sites are totally up and down, it’s driving me nuts. I need access to my forum!

  123. Ei Says:

Sites are online now. At least in thunderbird.

  124. Jack Says:

The main panel is still down, but my server - I’ve been here for years and years - is up and running at full speed, and all the spam that couldn’t get through is rushing in like a giant fecal tsunami. Newer folks: hold on, they’ll probably be getting to you soon.

  125. Tim Says:

    What utter cock!
This is happening way too often

  126. DSanchez Says:

Fellas, this is getting old.already. You guys respond quickly when there’s a problem, but there’ve been a lot of these outages lately. This outage today came at a particularly bad moment, and I’m extremely upset.

  127. Alexandre Fugita Says:

    On line @Powerbar

  128. Brian Roach Says:

    @Rod:

Er, no offense, but if it is actually costing you that much money a day, you’re not exactly making an intelligent choice in putting your business on a bargain-bin shared host. It would be akin to using a 20 year old pickup with bald tires to deliver perishable, exotic goods whose net profits would buy a new, reliable truck 10 times over.

For around $150/mo you can lease an unmanaged server at a reliable hosting company. If you don’t have the technical skill to manage the machine yourself, at about $350/mo you can have a managed solution. According to you, that’s half a day.

    - Roach

  129. Joe Says:

How much does it cost for Reliable Service? I think its time fo rme to spend more money!

  130. Casey Basichis Says:

This MUST STOP HAPPENING… Get it together.

  131. Antar spice Says:

I think so, i just said it :)

I sell porn, so dreamhost are good for that. I do spend over $1k/day on traffic and feed some to my DH servers but at $20/year for a virtual server here you can’t really beat it, well at least if it’s up for a bit. of course using the online CVS was dumb when the sites down.

We have a saying here, “Pay peanuts and you get monkeys” so with no disrespect to their engineers I would guess they are probably not the best in the field either, but that’s fine It’s a cheap bulk service.

  132. mxz Says:

@Eileen: There have been a myriad of different outages, each affecting different subsets of the whole DH network. It’s hard to say whether the “newer” ones are getting more affected than older ones, but there might be some truth in that the servers which go beyond the threshold due to the “newer” customers affect even the older ones on the same server.

I’ve also noticed that problems keep persisting even after DH has the all-clear “Resolved” status. Could be due to some network issues that take awhile to get ‘cleaned up’.

As many have commented, DH never used to have this many problems as before (some have been here for 10 years). This could be the breaking point of an otherwise great home-grown company.

  133. Bob Says:

PS hey yeah bunch of BS if you ask me.

    I should of know better!

  134. will Says:

i moved my site to dreamhost a month and a half ago… big mistake. already two major messes that resulted in me loosing business. Thanks DH! You know the pictures on the main page of DH with the text “Livin’ it up since…..etc.” well, not with my money. I am cancelling my account and warning everyone i can reach to stay away from these kiddies ( read: DreamHost ) Dreamhost… you suck, period.

  135. Richard Morris Says:

I agree with what people are saying here (and yes, I’m taking advantage of being out of the office on a cellular connection that DreamHost haven’t blacklisted on this blog…).

I really like DreamHost but very recent Yo-Yo webservers (up and down) and my inability presently to send some important e-mails are annoying.

DH remains superb value for money and the features/goodies are excellent too. I recenntly paid up to renew for another year so I’m voting with my wallet. I am worried about hosting business sites here but I could save thousands in hosting my many domains and business web sites here … if the reliability were better :\

  136. Pete Says:

Things seem to be holding steady now… Hopefully this is the end of the problem.

  137. Newuser Says:

Looks like there starting to come up, my sites just started loading.

  138. SearchAllDeals.com Says:

    Not holding steady for us.

  139. Bob Says:

Yeah it more like a YO-YO UP DOWN up DOWN
    Nothing fixed yet…

  140. Tainted Says:

This is the last straw for me. I’ve been a customer for less than 2 months and have suffered the following ailments:
    - Major network outage
    - Mail server outage
    - Bad router issue causing slow performance to my hosted server
    - Routinely slow performance of my hosted server Dionysus - i.e. saving an 8k text file in vi takes 3-12 seconds…WTF?!
    - DNS change doesn’t update in under 30 minutes on Dreamhost’s very own DNS servers!
…oh but adding a new domain in my control panel updates in DNS in under 5 minutes…figure that out.
    - Nobody ever answers the phone or calls back when a message is left. FU I don’t wanna talk to you anyway.

The wise-ass comments about playing dodgeball were only funny for 5 seconds. You have a company to run. Take it seriously.
I will be seeking a refund and moving elsewhere. They’re lucky they’re nobody has mentioned being damaged from these “outages.”

  141. Hannah Says:

Thanks again Dreamhost! Just when I want to work on my site, it goes down…

  142. Grrrr Says:

Holding steady? I still can’t access my sites. It’s been an hour now

  143. VOO Says:

  145. Grrrr Says:

  146. Alo? Says:

  147. Mike Says:

We were on Dreamhost for 3 months… and the uptime was absolutely horrid. After hours of down time on what seemed like every other day throughout the three month period we were with DH, we decided switched over to Media Temple.

We have not regretted the decision one bit.

We have had absolutely NO uptime issues whatsoever in the 9+ months that we’ve been there thus far. The connectivity is incredibly fast, same or better than DH (that is, when DH is actually up!)

To the poster who said that MT customer service is “terrible”… that may be so… but then again, it’s no worse than DH’s.

No, we never received “wicked fast”

  148. Mike Says:

… (less than 2 hour) response times. Most of our requests were1/2 day ~ 1 day response times. But then again, we never put in an urgent requests because, well, with MT’s servers actually being UP and WORKING, we never HAD an urgent request.

I mean, we’re not paying hundreds or thousands of dollars per month here… we’re paying for a low-cost hosting solution. And for a 1/2 day to 1 day turnaround time on non-urgent requests for the low cost that we’re paying for MT’s dependable hosting solution… I dunno, I don’t think I can ask for anything more.

  149. VOO Says:

“Who gives a shit about your granddaddy?”

Easy to say when he ain’t there to whip your spoiled, whining weenus ass into a real man!

  150. Grrrr Says:

LOL! Yeah, and my granddaddy could whup your granddaddy.

    Who gives a shit?

  151. Joshua Rudd Says:

I use DH to host my OpenID, and now I can’t log into dozens of services that aren’t even hosted on Dreamhost!

  152. VOO Says:

“Yeah, and my granddaddy could whup your granddaddy”

So why didn’t he deweenus you?

  153. Grrrr Says:

Tell your granddaddy to give you a reach-around next time, you seem to have this “weenus” fixation. I guess it’s just because granddaddy didn’t give yours a squeeze.

  154. Hmm Says:

So Mike, why does someone who hasn’t been at DH for 9 months post here?

Seems like an MT sales rep thing to do. That, or you’ve got serious grudge issues.

  166. Rod Says:

    @Roach

Yep, I think you hit the nail on the head. I’ve been with DH for many years (long before I started the side business) and it seemed reliable enough at the time. But your perception of reliability changes when you can start measuring downtime in terms of $$’s. You *do* get what you pay for. I really wish there was a nice happy medium between a $20/mo service and a $350/mo dedicated server. I mean, I’m just serving up static pages — it’s not exactly an intense site.

And anti-spam that “just works” would be awfully nice too.

    The search goes on…

Has Media Temple ever tried legit advertising, or do they just spam Dreamhost sites looking for their sloppy seconds? They seriously strike me as one of the most pathetic hosts out there, giving Lunar Pages a run for their money.

Fuck them. There are plenty of good hosts out there, but I would never give those assholes a penny.

But anyone that leaves Dreamhost for some douchebag company that gets spammed here is a retard that deserves what they get. The same assholes that do that probably change long distance carriers every time a telemarketer calls them during dinner.

I wish Dreamhost would add a word filter that replaced media temple with spamming pieces of shit every time it gets posted.

  170. Ed Says:

RAWR. MY SITE DOWN. GRAWR. Poop. Yum.

  171. Spurious Says:

Well yeah, it’s about that time of the month again. Time for a catastrphic network failure. I’m out of Dreamhost has soon as a slot at SliceHost opens up. This is ridiculous.

  172. jorge Says:

    Hello 1,

i didn’t know they spammed this place. they seem like a bigtime company with nike and adobe as clients. are they even competitors with DH? Oh… I just saw they have a $20 product.
Did SI leave them because of cost or reliability?

  173. Quang Says:

Very disappointing… and after I recommended DH to all the forums too…

Customer Service I thought has always been good, but the servers and
network has got to perform better if people are going to leave their
e-commerce sites on here. Downtime = Lost of money…

Also slow site = lost of money

    Hopefully things get better.

  174. Down Says:

My boss’s dreamhost site (happyinwater.com) is now up. But mine (http://www.devtools.org) is still down. What, am I not paying you as much as he is? Damn, that’s cold. Thank god my email is managed by gmail.

  175. Themicles Says:

All three of my sites are already back to quick loads just in the time entertaining myself reading the comments here.

Heck, I think I have my money’s worth just watching you people whine and complain like children every time something breaks.

Tell ya what, you try keeping something at 100% uptime. It’s not possible, not going to happen. I also host game servers on a home network and keep everything up to date, spend far more money than I should keeping the hardware up with demand, and there still isn’t 100% uptime.

For what the vast majority of us are paying, and the amount of traffic going through Dreamhost’s networks, I think that the uptime is acceptable. Then again, I live in the real world.

  176. Spurious Says:

Quang: They wont. It’s like this every month. Something ALWAYS happens. Just read this very blog archive.

  177. David Says:

    Re JORGE

I actually worked at EVB (one of those companies in that list). Media temple has small problems also. Not near as many BIG ones as dreamhost has been having though.

I know many friends that use MT and they are not overly happy about it. It works. It gets the job done. The biggest complaint I have had with them when working at EVB was their customer service. Even as a big client of theirs, they would blow us off until we threatened to leave. We had a few big problems that only got resolved after we went past their doped up tech support, straight to the head of the company.

MT is good, not the best, and a good solution.

It seems that dreamhost is about the same quality, but have just had a run of bad luck. Maybe they just need to have a better backup system for when this type of thing happens?

  178. Leo Renard Says:

    God damn it all.

DreamHost. Do me a favour. Once you have it up and running again, DO NOT TOUCH THE SERVERS!

  179. Up Says:

My site came back the instant I complained about it. I’m torn between feeling pleased that you guys responded, and concerned about the precedent this sets. :)

  180. Bob Says:

Well my site back up as well, seem stable … for the moment…
Thanks DH , now just keep it that way… PLEASE!

  181. jorge Says:

David, Thanks for the input. :-)

  182. Pete Says:

Hm I think we’re all good now… but I’m still keeping my fingers crossed…

  183. David Says:

After years of hosting my own server off my DSL, I let myself get talked into DH. Now, right in the middle of migration, I get this outage. I hope I didn’t make a mistake.

  184. 1 Says:

Nike & Adobe aren’t hosted at MT.

  185. SoonToBeExDH Says:

Okay, here’s the scoop as I see it:

I’ve had sites with DH for a few years now. I was hoping to be able to move off my (expensive) dedicated box with another company and use DH, who seem very personable and friendly as well as extremely generous bandwidth and storage.

Since I signed up, there have been numerous issues, small to large. I’ve had a friend whose business site I host complain many times about email issues. Honestly and without prejudice, I feel that DH’s service is up and down like a roller coaster. Sure, I only pay $20/mo, but I am surprised at the ongoing issues that DH experiences.

So, the upshot is, yes, I’m taking the “door” option. There are providers out there who lease unmanaged boxes for $68-$128/mo. with almost no downtime whatsoever. I actually had better uptime running a small server at home with Qwest DSL.

I had never used a shared-hosting facility until a friend recommended I try DH. I think I’m going to pony up and go with a more reliable service from here on out.

Without wanting to sound to shill-like, I’ve had great experiences with ThePlanet/EV1 and ServerBeach. Both of them offer dedicated servers for the prices I mentioned above. I will be returning to them as soon as I can get my data off the DH servers.

Good luck, DH. I’m sorry for your troubles, but I am not willing to put up with them.

  186. Woz Says:

Oh man, i just bought a dh account today. Thats what i call bad luck. Seriusly.

  187. fneh Says:

I guess that must be why I can not connect via ftp/ssh to any of my sites. haha.

  188. Roach Says:

    @Rod

I’ve been with DH for several years as well and originally it was for a business site. At the time, DH *was* a good place to run a business … then the prices dropped, along with the reliability.

I moved my business to a dedicated server at softlayer. $150/mo, unmanaged. Zero downtime. Period. I hated shelling out the extra cash, but I immediatly learned that the reliability was worth every penny.

While I’ve been a Unix sysadmin professionally and have years of experience with *nix … it really isn’t that hard to manage your own box, especially if all you’re doing is running Apache and maybe a MySQL server.

The only real gripe I have with DH is that they can’t even provide reliable email service for $10/mo, which is pretty pathetic. Everything else … eh, like you said, you get what you pay for.

    - Roach

  189. Greg Says:

To those that say they are leaving - buh-bye!

To those that are thankful that we are at least being told what the issues are - cheers!

Maybe once the whiners are gone this will be a happier place.

  190. meigetsu Says:

Man, most of y’all are a bunch of whiners.

If you don’t like it, leave. For my money’s worth, DH does a pretty good job and is affordable. I host business and pro sites with them and get very few complaints from my customers. If you all have such frigging important sites, why not shell out a little more for hosting? You get what you pay for.

Speaking of getting what you pay for, DH, why not ditch the crappy buggy IOS and go with JUNOS? Juniper’s more expensive, sure, but … :)

  191. tiggsy Says:

All of you who are moaning like good’uns should remember this: Dreamhost is amazingly good value, because you get massive amounts of space and bandwidth, loads of freebies, staff that talk to you like a human instead of something the dog threw up AND understand what you are trying to tell you (more precious than gold) and the downtime aint THAT bad when you bear all that in mind.

Remember, they are doing a job most of us wouldn’t have a clue how to tackle. And these sorts of outages on other hosts typically get dealt with a lot more slowly when they do occur, and you get nothing but snide remarks from the staff on other hosts when you point out the problem (i think most hosts dont realise their customers monitor their uptime)

  192. fneh Says:

I have never had any problems with dreamhost - minus a few minor things that are fixed quick and the ever friendly support staff for when I get confused on something I design everything from professional sites to musician sites. Never ever had any problems that was resolved in 24 hr times. I hope this gets resolved soon; my FTP is acting all buggy and luggy.

  193. mumbles Says:

I would like to aggree with greg’s coment , If eveyone who complained on this blog left dreamhost 1/2 of the reselling problems would be gone and therefore would leave eveyone left a better deal.

YOU are paying 7$ a mounth for hosting - what do you expect .

To all of you who are hosting buisness critical websites - DONT-and use a dedicated box for that. Its a buisness after all they should be able to afford a dedicated box.

  194. mezz Says:

stop whining. things break - thats life. they fixes it.
    now stop your belly aching.
bunch of little baby boys here

  195. Perimus Says:

Thanks for the level of detail in your resolution notes… somehow knowing about what happened makes me feel a little bit better about the annoying outage today.

  196. Mcb Says:

Am I the only one whose sites are still down? They say the issue is resolved, but none of my sites are loading. I’m on a Dreamhost PS too, so it costs me more than $7/month. A lot more!

  197. BakedGoods Says:

NO, not the only one!! It’s been down almost ALL DAY!!!

  198. andi Says:

I’m in the same boat, it’s been very intermittent for the last hour. I pay a lot on my PS too, because I have pretty high loads.

  199. Dave Says:

    Guys,

If you can’t run a network properly, please hire someone who can. A top-notch Cisco admin isn’t cheap, but (s)he’ll keep your place running properly and your customers happy.

While I’m griping, is there any chance we could get more than 48hrs of notice for scheduled downtime? 2 weeks would be a sensible amount of notice.

    dave.

  200. An extremely unhappy customer Says:

How am I suppose to log a support call if your page doesn’t load? Sort this shit out or you’ll going to lose customers.

  201. brasscrest Says:

@Extremely unhappy. The panel is working for me (from the US east coast).

  202. Pete Says:

At least the problem is resolved now.

I complain about DH, I know, but at least they’re transparent about problems. I’m always one to forgive, as long as DH doesn’t let the same type of problem haunt them over and over again.

  203. Money Blue Book Says:

Site is still laggy…what is everyone’s site response time? Mine is consistently 5-10 seconds….very slow.. :(

  204. Jeff Says:

    down again. now.

  205. Sigh Says:

    *sigh*

  206. britton Says:

    My site(s) load very quickly.

  207. Tainted Says:

To all of you who think that outages are acceptable because of the low price you pay for hosting:

One word - REDUNDANCY (watch uptime increase)

One thought - For the same price, you get greater reliability with competing companies. Price does not imply reliability. You paid money for a service. and the service isn’t being provided (reliably). It’s a simple contract issue.

  208. VOO Says:

    Tainted…

No.1 - There IS more to hosting the ultimate uptime… there ARE more qualities of value that Dreamhost offers that would not come along with another hosting company with higher uptime for the same price. This is not to say “bring on the downtime”, but rather that for some of us the tradeoff is still worthwhile.

No.2 - You have an exceptionally useless website… nothing but WEAK ass affiliate ads. Please, for the love of all The Universe, build yourself a sweat lodge and seek a vision from The Great Spirit… find a truly worthwhile way to make your money… not only would it add more to our world to do so, but it would have a much greater chance of actually working than what you are presently trying to pull off… probably after spending too much time reading get rich quick blogs (and even then, not paying very much attention). Get your head out of Digital Point knockoffs, and get your ass into a sweat lodge where REAL visions are to be had.

No.3 (really an extension of No.2) - Your site is also copied code from some CSS guru dude who’s name I can no longer recall. Come on man, for real… get your own vision… they are there to be had, but you will have to put some personal effort into it… it’s not going to come down on you out of nowhere for nothing. Get yourself a book on Shamanism or something if you have no idea where to even begin with this stuff, but the root of the whole thing is to seek your own vision in earnest.

    Voice Of One

  209. VOO Says:

Ah yes… found it… went to google and tried “CSS Guru” and the VERY first result was the dude I remembered… Eric Mayer. Here is the part of HIS site that I recalled:

    http://meyerweb.com/eric/css/edge/popups/demo.html

and here is yours Tainted… not that I’m showing YOU anything you don’t already know:

… keep telling me it’s my probs :[

we better get credit back for this prolonged downtime

  213. Bob Says:

I have Ad Block Plus and your site has nothing on it! Put some real content on there before just cramming it full of ads!

  214. andi Says:

GL a credit would be nice, I even mistakenly put my CPU/RAM up during all of this thinking it was a load issue with my site. Took support all of forever to get back to me and let me know it was a hardware issue that is now supposedly fixed, yet I still have no site 75% of the time.

  215. Dave B Says:

U know, STUFF HAPPENS, THINGS BREAK!!!! The fact that they are OPEN about it and are keeping us all informed about what they are doing. When your car breaks down, do U blame the mechanic? When someone takes their car and SMASHES it into a power pole, do U blame the power company? Come on PEOPLE!! Things Happen, and they are trying their best to fix it. They are Upgrading to handle the load, they just need the time when they can go in and Fix it!!! There are WAY worse companies that really do not care. To me, its seems like DH DOES!!!!!!!!

  216. Vernon J Says:

I’ve got no qualms at all about the site being down because of some hardware issues. I have had to deal with hardware issues at the winery where I work. Even though I am there as their Assistant Winemaker, I still do some stuff for them in their networking and computers, just because I know more than most of them about it. At times it isn’t easy. A piece of hardware failure can really be frustrating at time to isolate and diagnose, and other times it is pretty simple. This is a great value webhost at DreamHost.

I am glad they at least have this page to show what is going on with their maintenance. We have Hughes.net satellite and they don’t even inform you that the problem is at THEIR end. After lengthy phone calls, you finally figure that out. So my hats off to DreamHost for being up front and honest.

  217. Bill Gates Says:

I have several different uptime services, and they all report the same things. Up/Down/Up/Down. Support says ‘everything should be fine now’ yet later on I get another email from the uptime service that my sites are down… These are simple sites, nothing fancy, basically 1-click-installs, everything SHOULD work fine!
