Secondary name server experiencing packet loss
The colocation facility that houses our secondary name server, ns2.dreamhost.com is currently experiencing some network problems, causing some servers to appear down, or unavailable.
We’re currently working with our provider to fix this issue, and will post more information as soon as we’re updated by by their command center.
–UPDATE– Tue Oct 23 22:59:36 PDT 2007
While our secondary NS colocation facility insists the problem is on their end, we continue to witness issues across the board. This is causing many sites to be inaccessible though the majority are up and running fine. We are looking further into the issue and raising this post to medium severity. We sincerely apologize for any downtime this causes. We don’t like it any more than you do.
- UPDATE Wed Oct 24 05:43:24 PDT 2007 -
All is clear on the westward front! The packet loss to our off site facility has actually been resolved for a few hours. For the sake of being prudent however, we refrained from resolving the issue until everything cleared up. ns2.dreamhost.com is back up and fully functional. If you are experiencing any problems whatsoever, please contact support.

IM TRYING TO DO BUSINESS. IM DONE WITH DREAMHOST.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:34 pm
Great. Shocking, Dreamhost taking a shit, who would have thought.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:34 pm
Thanks guys for the update. I was getting worried! It’s good to know you are working on the problem.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:34 pm
yup, I’m down.
Kiltsrock.com is OOC. Ever seen a hoard of angry forum-going scotsman? They like to throw telephone poles at things after drinking a lot of scotch.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:35 pm
Guys, get it fixed, seriously, it’s not funny anymore….
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:36 pm
yea - Severity: Low - that seems very wrong…
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:36 pm
Eric: If your data is on fire, or the local DH porn server is down.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:37 pm
It’s more than just secondary DNS. The web panel and all my site are tits up at the moment.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:37 pm
If only they’d say how this could affect my website. Is that why I can’t send email anymore or what?
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:37 pm
Hello DH Staff,
I’d normally file a formal support ticket, but it appears the hamsters are tired, hungry and thirsty and needed a break so I am posting my concern here.
I am not able to reach my sites. I tested independently with the Verizon DNS, resetting my local Winsock, Power cycling, using Open DNS, and tried the AOL software (uses ATDN-powered proxies). I’ve successfully narrowed my concern down to the box that hosts my site (SAKE).
For reference, here is the output of my pings. As you can see, I have decent internet connectivity, except to my SAKE box.

Seems like much more than a nameserver gone astray. Mail is reachable but horribly slow, panel won’t load, discussion.dh.com and blog.dh.com won’t load.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:37 pm
Sweet! thanks for always staying on top of things!
Though I do feel bad for those losing money on websites… then again anyone making serious cash on a website would have a dedicated server.. so they are not actually losing a lot, if any. But hey they have a right to complain too, I guess.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:37 pm
Seriously? “Low” severity? Is that a joke?
Dreamhost’s ticket has been punched. And I’ve been a customer for years.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:38 pm
Severity low? I have 5 or 6 sites down.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:38 pm
They dont read here. I got a ticket submitted with 10 pings and traceroutes after 15 minutes of waiting, should help
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:38 pm
Even the Dreamhost Panel is down, what’s happening, why does so many problems happen with only our sites. I checked other sites running DS AND THEY ARE ALL RUNNING FINE. Do we have to suffer all the time.
The renewal is coming soon so will have to start looking at alternatives.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:39 pm
Did the bootlicker sigil go up already?
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:39 pm
I start thinking, they’re just trying to scare me away…
Been with DH for 3 or 4 years…
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:39 pm
All my sites are down for almost an hour now, and the DreamHost site/panel are down or inaccessible. Not really LOW, I would think.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:39 pm
I’m sorry, the entire family of Dreamhost sites slowing down to a glacial pace and being unreachable 25% of the time is a LOW priority issue?!
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:41 pm
looks like more routing issues to me,
not name servers
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:41 pm
Figures, and right after I transferred my first customer site to Dreamhost. DH FTL.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:42 pm
People who complain because they are “doing business” need to pay 100-150 a month through a business hosting provider for gurenteed uptime or their own server. You pay 11/month you get that kind of server. I’m down and not gonna complain.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:42 pm
Hostgator is about the same value as DH, you don’t get quite the “resources” but DH would never you use all of what you pay for anyway. I’m moving to slicehost as soon as they start taking signups again.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:43 pm
Yeah, their entire network is dog slow right now, this is much bigger than a secondary nameserver.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:43 pm
I’m sure this is a newbie stupid question, but if the nameserver is down, why are my websites kicking back mySQL database errors?
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:44 pm
Low severity? When the **PANEL** is down? I can’t even log a ticket and got this back when I tried to email support@
We’re sorry.. your email was unable to be processed by our automatic
support system, and so is being returned to you.
Our system could not find the open support case you were replying to,

October 23rd, 2007 at 9:44 pm
Yep, bootlickers aplenty, the bootlicker sigil must have gone out early on this one.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:44 pm
Really nice. I just bought this account 6 hours ago despite reading warnings about this place, So, it now looks like my nameservers are half resolved and I can’t even finish uploading my site. Thanks for wasting an evening of my time, I’ll be requesting a refund and finding an actually reliable host in the morning.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:44 pm
Mer: Because DH does everything they can to downplay their shitty service, yes, including lying.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:44 pm
If this is a secondary DNS issue, then Modesto is a pretty city.
And Modesto will never be pretty!
My sites have been slower than a wet week in Bakersfield, and now not only are they dead, the panel is inop too.
Whomever posted the initial message here needs to consider politics as a career move, because (a) they haven’t got a clue about IT, and (b) they’re clearly qualified for it in terms of honesty.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:45 pm
To y’all who’re suggesting we should be ticked off cause of the low rates, wake up and look around - other sites offer similar rates, but don’t go belly up at regular interval.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:45 pm
But where the hell should i move? Rest of those companies get downtimes exactly the same way but they wont even keep you updated and if their support answers you after 2 days you should consider yourself lucky…
Anyone with a GOOD hosting company that actually keeps the uptime they promote?
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:45 pm
man this sucks.. hopefully it will get fixed realy soon
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:46 pm
“Whomever posted the initial message here needs to consider politics as a career move, because (a) they haven’t got a clue about IT, and (b) they’re clearly qualified for it in terms of honesty.”
I think Dana Perino posted this in between press conferences, yes?
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:46 pm
Mer,
I’m getting that too:
WordPress database error: [Table ‘xxxdb.wp_terms’ doesn’t exist]
SELECT t.*, tt.*, tr.object_id FROM wp_terms AS t INNER JOIN wp_term_taxonomy AS tt ON tt.term_id = t.term_id INNER JOIN wp_term_relationships AS tr ON tr.term_taxonomy_id = tt.term_taxonomy_id WHERE tt.taxonomy IN (’category’, ‘post_tag’) AND tr.object_id IN (36, 35, 30, 29, 28, 26, 25, 24, 23, 22) ORDER BY t.name ASC
WTF?? I have been a happy DH customer for years, but lately am getting very worried about the downtime. I’ve referred a number of people to DH as well. I don’t even know where to start looking for a new hosting company! If my sites are hosed and the data lost, I will be mightily peeved.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:47 pm
NIGHTMARE HOST
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:48 pm
Anyone recommend anything else besides DH? Shouldn’t be complaining for the cost of the hosting
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:49 pm
TFisher, I got that same autoreply from the email I sent them. Just a couple of weeks ago it would say that it was FINE to send a request that way, just not PREFERABLE. Not a good development.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:49 pm
overdrivediamond:
Hostgator if you need adult hosting
Site5 if you don’t
Slicehost if you want a barebones vps.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:50 pm
I was just working on something, and all of a sudden everything goes to crap. Thanks a lot.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:50 pm
You know what, i have read here on thsi everyday almost sonce i signed up because i have had one problem after another.
But to hear people saying we donthave a right to complain because we arent paying $150 a month, is pretty much BS
Yeah its a shared host, but is no excuse for EVERY day problems!
i hosted on tripod for like 8 years and never had an issue of it going down or trying to work on it and it be unaccessible and it was a FREE host.
Price is not a issue, were paying for a service here and were not even coming close to getting it.
what good is so many resources and badnwidth if we cant even be online 20 hours of the day.
best part is the “trick” on the 97 guarantee is only good for CC payments. NO PAYPAL which i am guess that about 80% of here paid with.
a FN guarantee should be good on any type payment.
I would say if a group of people went to paypal like a class action we’d get our money back or enough to get these guys to get their $hit together.
But no matter what Low Price shouldnt me very LOW service.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:50 pm
Thanks, I just provide non-adult movie clips from different tv shows. I’ll have to check out those other hosters. Thanks!
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:50 pm
Damn I can show you sites that run on DH and are running pretty sleek right now, it only happens to a select few of us all the time. Aren’t those other sites using secondary name servers too or are we fools.
I have already started moving to a dedicated server from my friend, but the stupid thing does not even allow me to login into ssh and use scp, so FOLKS THIS IS NOT A NAMESERVER ISSUE AT ALL.
If it was why the heck is ssh down too.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:51 pm
Are you sure something is going on with NS2. I’m seeing problems at your core router and not at your offside colo.
NS1 and NS3- DH’s network
— ns3.dreamhost.com ping statistics —
10 packets transmitted, 7 packets received, 30% packet loss
— ns1.dreamhost.com ping statistics —

NS2 - offsite/network colo

KT Says:
Kiltsrock.com is OOC. Ever seen a hoard of angry forum-going scotsman? They like to throw telephone poles at things after drinking a lot of scotch.
LOL! I needed that laugh.
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:52 pm
Last straw dreamhost. If this happens again, I am going to leave. I was planning on upgrading everything to a higher big plan since some of my sites are going experience massive growth soon, but after this… so…….. pissed…….. off
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:52 pm
You get what you pay for….
Why does Dreamhost have an off site website (dhreamhoststatus.com)? That’s easy… because they don’t trust their own servers.
