Secondary name server experiencing packet loss

Posted (October 23rd, 2007 at 9:31 pm PST) by Brian

The colocation facility that houses our secondary name server, ns2.dreamhost.com is currently experiencing some network problems, causing some servers to appear down, or unavailable.

We’re currently working with our provider to fix this issue, and will post more information as soon as we’re updated by by their command center.

–UPDATE– Tue Oct 23 22:59:36 PDT 2007

While our secondary NS colocation facility insists the problem is on their end, we continue to witness issues across the board. This is causing many sites to be inaccessible though the majority are up and running fine. We are looking further into the issue and raising this post to medium severity. We sincerely apologize for any downtime this causes. We don’t like it any more than you do.

- UPDATE Wed Oct 24 05:43:24 PDT 2007 -

All is clear on the westward front! The packet loss to our off site facility has actually been resolved for a few hours. For the sake of being prudent however, we refrained from resolving the issue until everything cleared up. ns2.dreamhost.com is back up and fully functional. If you are experiencing any problems whatsoever, please contact support.

Here we FU%%ing go again with this shit.

Thanks for the updates!

IM TRYING TO DO BUSINESS. IM DONE WITH DREAMHOST.

Great. Shocking, Dreamhost taking a shit, who would have thought.

Thanks guys for the update. I was getting worried! It’s good to know you are working on the problem.

yup, I’m down.

Kiltsrock.com is OOC. Ever seen a hoard of angry forum-going scotsman? They like to throw telephone poles at things after drinking a lot of scotch.

Guys, get it fixed, seriously, it’s not funny anymore….

yea - Severity: Low - that seems very wrong…

Eric: If your data is on fire, or the local DH porn server is down.

It’s more than just secondary DNS. The web panel and all my site are tits up at the moment.

If only they’d say how this could affect my website. Is that why I can’t send email anymore or what?

Hello DH Staff,

I’d normally file a formal support ticket, but it appears the hamsters are tired, hungry and thirsty and needed a break so I am posting my concern here.

I am not able to reach my sites. I tested independently with the Verizon DNS, resetting my local Winsock, Power cycling, using Open DNS, and tried the AOL software (uses ATDN-powered proxies). I’ve successfully narrowed my concern down to the box that hosts my site (SAKE).

For reference, here is the output of my pings. As you can see, I have decent internet connectivity, except to my SAKE box.

Seems like much more than a nameserver gone astray. Mail is reachable but horribly slow, panel won’t load, discussion.dh.com and blog.dh.com won’t load.

Sweet! thanks for always staying on top of things!

Though I do feel bad for those losing money on websites… then again anyone making serious cash on a website would have a dedicated server.. so they are not actually losing a lot, if any. But hey they have a right to complain too, I guess.

Seriously? “Low” severity? Is that a joke?

Dreamhost’s ticket has been punched. And I’ve been a customer for years.

Severity low? I have 5 or 6 sites down.

They dont read here. I got a ticket submitted with 10 pings and traceroutes after 15 minutes of waiting, should help

Even the Dreamhost Panel is down, what’s happening, why does so many problems happen with only our sites. I checked other sites running DS AND THEY ARE ALL RUNNING FINE. Do we have to suffer all the time.

The renewal is coming soon so will have to start looking at alternatives.

Did the bootlicker sigil go up already?

I start thinking, they’re just trying to scare me away… :( Been with DH for 3 or 4 years…

All my sites are down for almost an hour now, and the DreamHost site/panel are down or inaccessible. Not really LOW, I would think.

I’m sorry, the entire family of Dreamhost sites slowing down to a glacial pace and being unreachable 25% of the time is a LOW priority issue?!

looks like more routing issues to me,
not name servers

Figures, and right after I transferred my first customer site to Dreamhost. DH FTL.

People who complain because they are “doing business” need to pay 100-150 a month through a business hosting provider for gurenteed uptime or their own server. You pay 11/month you get that kind of server. I’m down and not gonna complain.

Hostgator is about the same value as DH, you don’t get quite the “resources” but DH would never you use all of what you pay for anyway. I’m moving to slicehost as soon as they start taking signups again.

Yeah, their entire network is dog slow right now, this is much bigger than a secondary nameserver.

I’m sure this is a newbie stupid question, but if the nameserver is down, why are my websites kicking back mySQL database errors?

Low severity? When the **PANEL** is down? I can’t even log a ticket and got this back when I tried to email support@

We’re sorry.. your email was unable to be processed by our automatic

Yep, bootlickers aplenty, the bootlicker sigil must have gone out early on this one.

Really nice. I just bought this account 6 hours ago despite reading warnings about this place, So, it now looks like my nameservers are half resolved and I can’t even finish uploading my site. Thanks for wasting an evening of my time, I’ll be requesting a refund and finding an actually reliable host in the morning.

Mer: Because DH does everything they can to downplay their shitty service, yes, including lying.

If this is a secondary DNS issue, then Modesto is a pretty city.

And Modesto will never be pretty!

My sites have been slower than a wet week in Bakersfield, and now not only are they dead, the panel is inop too.

Whomever posted the initial message here needs to consider politics as a career move, because (a) they haven’t got a clue about IT, and (b) they’re clearly qualified for it in terms of honesty.

To y’all who’re suggesting we should be ticked off cause of the low rates, wake up and look around - other sites offer similar rates, but don’t go belly up at regular interval.

But where the hell should i move? Rest of those companies get downtimes exactly the same way but they wont even keep you updated and if their support answers you after 2 days you should consider yourself lucky…

Anyone with a GOOD hosting company that actually keeps the uptime they promote?

man this sucks.. hopefully it will get fixed realy soon

“Whomever posted the initial message here needs to consider politics as a career move, because (a) they haven’t got a clue about IT, and (b) they’re clearly qualified for it in terms of honesty.”

I think Dana Perino posted this in between press conferences, yes?

Mer,
I’m getting that too:
WordPress database error: [Table 'xxxdb.wp_terms' doesn't exist]
SELECT t.*, tt.*, tr.object_id FROM wp_terms AS t INNER JOIN wp_term_taxonomy AS tt ON tt.term_id = t.term_id INNER JOIN wp_term_relationships AS tr ON tr.term_taxonomy_id = tt.term_taxonomy_id WHERE tt.taxonomy IN (’category’, ‘post_tag’) AND tr.object_id IN (36, 35, 30, 29, 28, 26, 25, 24, 23, 22) ORDER BY t.name ASC

WTF?? I have been a happy DH customer for years, but lately am getting very worried about the downtime. I’ve referred a number of people to DH as well. I don’t even know where to start looking for a new hosting company! If my sites are hosed and the data lost, I will be mightily peeved.

Anyone recommend anything else besides DH? Shouldn’t be complaining for the cost of the hosting

TFisher, I got that same autoreply from the email I sent them. Just a couple of weeks ago it would say that it was FINE to send a request that way, just not PREFERABLE. Not a good development.

overdrivediamond:
Hostgator if you need adult hosting
Site5 if you don’t
Slicehost if you want a barebones vps.

I was just working on something, and all of a sudden everything goes to crap. Thanks a lot.

You know what, i have read here on thsi everyday almost sonce i signed up because i have had one problem after another.

But to hear people saying we donthave a right to complain because we arent paying $150 a month, is pretty much BS

Yeah its a shared host, but is no excuse for EVERY day problems!

i hosted on tripod for like 8 years and never had an issue of it going down or trying to work on it and it be unaccessible and it was a FREE host.

Price is not a issue, were paying for a service here and were not even coming close to getting it.

what good is so many resources and badnwidth if we cant even be online 20 hours of the day.

best part is the “trick” on the 97 guarantee is only good for CC payments. NO PAYPAL which i am guess that about 80% of here paid with.

a FN guarantee should be good on any type payment.

I would say if a group of people went to paypal like a class action we’d get our money back or enough to get these guys to get their $hit together.

But no matter what Low Price shouldnt me very LOW service.

Thanks, I just provide non-adult movie clips from different tv shows. I’ll have to check out those other hosters. Thanks!

Damn I can show you sites that run on DH and are running pretty sleek right now, it only happens to a select few of us all the time. Aren’t those other sites using secondary name servers too or are we fools.

I have already started moving to a dedicated server from my friend, but the stupid thing does not even allow me to login into ssh and use scp, so FOLKS THIS IS NOT A NAMESERVER ISSUE AT ALL.

If it was why the heck is ssh down too.

Are you sure something is going on with NS2. I’m seeing problems at your core router and not at your offside colo.

LOL! I needed that laugh. ;)

Last straw dreamhost. If this happens again, I am going to leave. I was planning on upgrading everything to a higher big plan since some of my sites are going experience massive growth soon, but after this… so…….. pissed…….. off

You get what you pay for….

Why does Dreamhost have an off site website (dhreamhoststatus.com)? That’s easy… because they don’t trust their own servers.

Yeah, that’s nice, but not really applicable, Ben and whoever comes up with the low price argument. When I signed up, way back, DreamHost was business strength. This was probably before you joined for a cheapo play account. It was reliable, but the last two years or so it’s really bad with downtime. And if you pay for the expensive plans, you still get hit by most of the same outages.

When it’s running, I really like DreamHost, because of the way their system is set up. I don’t care too much about the crazy space or bandwidth allowance. It’s what you can do with the system. But when the site is down again, and again, and again, that does not do anyone any good. That’s how a business strength provider became a cheapo play host.

This song is called Alice’s Restaurant, and it’s about Alice, and the
restaurant, but Alice’s Restaurant is not the name of the restaurant,
that’s just the name of the song, and that’s why I called the song Alice’s
Restaurant.

You can get anything you want at Alice’s Restaurant
You can get anything you want at Alice’s Restaurant
Walk right in it’s around the back
Just a half a mile from the railroad track
You can get anything you want at Alice’s Restaurant

Now it all started two Thanksgivings ago, was on - two years ago on
Thanksgiving, when my friend and I went up to visit Alice at the
restaurant, but Alice doesn’t live in the restaurant, she lives in the
church nearby the restaurant, in the bell-tower, with her husband Ray and
Fasha the dog. And livin’ in the bell tower like that, they got a lot of
room downstairs where the pews used to be in. Havin’ all that room,
seein’ as how they took out all the pews, they decided that they didn’t
have to take out their garbage for a long time.

We got up there, we found all the garbage in there, and we decided it’d be
a friendly gesture for us to take the garbage down to the city dump. So
we took the half a ton of garbage, put it in the back of a red VW
microbus, took shovels and rakes and implements of destruction and headed
on toward the city dump.

Well we got there and there was a big sign and a chain across across the
dump saying, “Closed on Thanksgiving.” And we had never heard of a dump
closed on Thanksgiving before, and with tears in our eyes we drove off
into the sunset looking for another place to put the garbage.

We didn’t find one. Until we came to a side road, and off the side of the
side road there was another fifteen foot cliff and at the bottom of the
cliff there was another pile of garbage. And we decided that one big pile
is better than two little piles, and rather than bring that one up we
decided to throw our’s down.

That’s what we did, and drove back to the church, had a thanksgiving
dinner that couldn’t be beat, went to sleep and didn’t get up until the
next morning, when we got a phone call from officer Obie. He said, “Kid,
we found your name on an envelope at the bottom of a half a ton of
garbage, and just wanted to know if you had any information about it.” And
I said, “Yes, sir, Officer Obie, I cannot tell a lie, I put that envelope
under that garbage.”

After speaking to Obie for about fourty-five minutes on the telephone we
finally arrived at the truth of the matter and said that we had to go down
and pick up the garbage, and also had to go down and speak to him at the
police officer’s station. So we got in the red VW microbus with the
shovels and rakes and implements of destruction and headed on toward the
police officer’s station.

Now friends, there was only one or two things that Obie coulda done at
the police station, and the first was he could have given us a medal for
being so brave and honest on the telephone, which wasn’t very likely, and
we didn’t expect it, and the other thing was he could have bawled us out
and told us never to be see driving garbage around the vicinity again,
which is what we expected, but when we got to the police officer’s station
there was a third possibility that we hadn’t even counted upon, and we was
both immediately arrested. Handcuffed. And I said “Obie, I don’t think I
can pick up the garbage with these handcuffs on.” He said, “Shut up, kid.
Get in the back of the patrol car.”

And that’s what we did, sat in the back of the patrol car and drove to the
quote Scene of the Crime unquote. I want tell you about the town of
Stockbridge, Massachusets, where this happened here, they got three stop
signs, two police officers, and one police car, but when we got to the
Scene of the Crime there was five police officers and three police cars,
being the biggest crime of the last fifty years, and everybody wanted to
get in the newspaper story about it. And they was using up all kinds of
cop equipment that they had hanging around the police officer’s station.
They was taking plaster tire tracks, foot prints, dog smelling prints, and
they took twenty seven eight-by-ten colour glossy photographs with circles
and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what each
one was to be used as evidence against us. Took pictures of the approach,
the getaway, the northwest corner the southwest corner and that’s not to
mention the aerial photography.

After the ordeal, we went back to the jail. Obie said he was going to put
us in the cell. Said, “Kid, I’m going to put you in the cell, I want your
wallet and your belt.” And I said, “Obie, I can understand you wanting my
wallet so I don’t have any money to spend in the cell, but what do you
want my belt for?” And he said, “Kid, we don’t want any hangings.” I
said, “Obie, did you think I was going to hang myself for littering?”
Obie said he was making sure, and friends Obie was, cause he took out the
toilet seat so I couldn’t hit myself over the head and drown, and he took
out the toilet paper so I couldn’t bend the bars roll out the - roll the
toilet paper out the window, slide down the roll and have an escape. Obie
was making sure, and it was about four or five hours later that Alice
(remember Alice? It’s a song about Alice), Alice came by and with a few
nasty words to Obie on the side, bailed us out of jail, and we went back
to the church, had a another thanksgiving dinner that couldn’t be beat,
and didn’t get up until the next morning, when we all had to go to court.

We walked in, sat down, Obie came in with the twenty seven eight-by-ten
colour glossy pictures with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back
of each one, sat down. Man came in said, “All rise.” We all stood up,
and Obie stood up with the twenty seven eight-by-ten colour glossy
pictures, and the judge walked in sat down with a seeing eye dog, and he
sat down, we sat down. Obie looked at the seeing eye dog, and then at the
twenty seven eight-by-ten colour glossy pictures with circles and arrows
and a paragraph on the back of each one, and looked at the seeing eye dog.
And then at twenty seven eight-by-ten colour glossy pictures with circles
and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one and began to cry,
’cause Obie came to the realization that it was a typical case of American
blind justice, and there wasn’t nothing he could do about it, and the
judge wasn’t going to look at the twenty seven eight-by-ten colour glossy
pictures with the circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each
one explaining what each one was to be used as evidence against us. And
we was fined $50 and had to pick up the garbage in the snow, but thats not
what I came to tell you about.

Came to talk about the draft.

They got a building down New York City, it’s called Whitehall Street,
where you walk in, you get injected, inspected, detected, infected,
neglected and selected. I went down to get my physical examination one
day, and I walked in, I sat down, got good and drunk the night before, so
I looked and felt my best when I went in that morning. `Cause I wanted to
look like the all-American kid from New York City, man I wanted, I wanted
to feel like the all-, I wanted to be the all American kid from New York,
and I walked in, sat down, I was hung down, brung down, hung up, and all
kinds o’ mean nasty ugly things. And I waked in and sat down and they gave
me a piece of paper, said, “Kid, see the phsychiatrist, room 604.”

And I went up there, I said, “Shrink, I want to kill. I mean, I wanna, I
wanna kill. Kill. I wanna, I wanna see, I wanna see blood and gore and
guts and veins in my teeth. Eat dead burnt bodies. I mean kill, Kill,
KILL, KILL.” And I started jumpin up and down yelling, “KILL, KILL,” and
he started jumpin up and down with me and we was both jumping up and down
yelling, “KILL, KILL.” And the sargent came over, pinned a medal on me,
sent me down the hall, said, “You’re our boy.”

Didn’t feel too good about it.

Proceeded on down the hall gettin more injections, inspections,
detections, neglections and all kinds of stuff that they was doin’ to me
at the thing there, and I was there for two hours, three hours, four
hours, I was there for a long time going through all kinds of mean nasty
ugly things and I was just having a tough time there, and they was
inspecting, injecting every single part of me, and they was leaving no
part untouched. Proceeded through, and when I finally came to the see the
last man, I walked in, walked in sat down after a whole big thing there,
and I walked up and said, “What do you want?” He said, “Kid, we only got
one question. Have you ever been arrested?”

And I proceeded to tell him the story of the Alice’s Restaurant Massacre,
with full orchestration and five part harmony and stuff like that and all
the phenome… - and he stopped me right there and said, “Kid, did you ever
go to court?”

And I proceeded to tell him the story of the twenty seven eight-by-ten
colour glossy pictures with the circles and arrows and the paragraph on
the back of each one, and he stopped me right there and said, “Kid, I want
you to go and sit down on that bench that says Group W …. NOW kid!!”

And I, I walked over to the, to the bench there, and there is, Group W’s
where they put you if you may not be moral enough to join the army after
committing your special crime, and there was all kinds of mean nasty ugly
looking people on the bench there. Mother rapers. Father stabbers. Father
rapers! Father rapers sitting right there on the bench next to me! And
they was mean and nasty and ugly and horrible crime-type guys sitting on the
bench next to me. And the meanest, ugliest, nastiest one, the meanest
father raper of them all, was coming over to me and he was mean ‘n’ ugly
‘n’ nasty ‘n’ horrible and all kind of things and he sat down next to me
and said, “Kid, whad’ya get?” I said, “I didn’t get nothing, I had to pay
$50 and pick up the garbage.” He said, “What were you arrested for, kid?”
And I said, “Littering.” And they all moved away from me on the bench
there, and the hairy eyeball and all kinds of mean nasty things, till I
said, “And creating a nuisance.” And they all came back, shook my hand,
and we had a great time on the bench, talkin about crime, mother stabbing,
father raping, all kinds of groovy things that we was talking about on the
bench. And everything was fine, we was smoking cigarettes and all kinds of
things, until the Sargeant came over, had some paper in his hand, held it
up and said.

“Kids, this-piece-of-paper’s-got-47-words-37-sentences-58-words-we-wanna-
know-details-of-the-crime-time-of-the-crime-and-any-other-kind-of-thing-
you-gotta-say-pertaining-to-and-about-the-crime-I-want-to-know-arresting-
officer’s-name-and-any-other-kind-of-thing-you-gotta-say”, and talked for
forty-five minutes and nobody understood a word that he said, but we had
fun filling out the forms and playing with the pencils on the bench there,
and I filled out the massacre with the four part harmony, and wrote it
down there, just like it was, and everything was fine and I put down the
pencil, and I turned over the piece of paper, and there, there on the
other side, in the middle of the other side, away from everything else on
the other side, in parentheses, capital letters, quotated, read the
following words:

(”KID, HAVE YOU REHABILITATED YOURSELF?”)

I went over to the sargent, said, “Sargeant, you got a lot a damn gall to
ask me if I’ve rehabilitated myself, I mean, I mean, I mean that just, I’m
sittin’ here on the bench, I mean I’m sittin here on the Group W bench
’cause you want to know if I’m moral enough join the army, burn women,
kids, houses and villages after bein’ a litterbug.” He looked at me and
said, “Kid, we don’t like your kind, and we’re gonna send you fingerprints
off to Washington.”

And friends, somewhere in Washington enshrined in some little folder, is a
study in black and white of my fingerprints. And the only reason I’m
singing you this song now is cause you may know somebody in a similar
situation, or you may be in a similar situation, and if your in a
situation like that there’s only one thing you can do and that’s walk into
the shrink wherever you are ,just walk in say “Shrink, You can get
anything you want, at Alice’s restaurant.”. And walk out. You know, if
one person, just one person does it they may think he’s really sick and
they won’t take him. And if two people, two people do it, in harmony,
they may think they’re both faggots and they won’t take either of them.
And three people do it, three, can you imagine, three people walking in
singin a bar of Alice’s Restaurant and walking out. They may think it’s an
organization. And can you, can you imagine fifty people a day,I said
fifty people a day walking in singin a bar of Alice’s Restaurant and
walking out. And friends they may thinks it’s a movement.

And that’s what it is , the Alice’s Restaurant Anti-Massacre Movement, and
all you got to do to join is sing it the next time it come’s around on the
guitar.

I love Dreamhost, I really do … but I thought moving to VPS would solve my problems. I’m about to lose out on a huge influx of traffic because the site that was going to send it won’t if my site is down. Severity is NOT low :(

I would like to switch to the server that hosts dreamhoststatus.com since it seems to have 100% uptime — even when the DH Control Panel goes down. Does this mean that Dreamhost uses a server other than their own for dreamhoststatus.com?

I am thinking about moving to MediaTemple and forking out $20 per month for what I’m told is more professional and reliable service.

I’ve liked Dreamhost for the most part over the last couple of years, but it seems like they are having major problems more frequently. They post some techno-talk gibberish “describing” the problem and its solution on here, but often, it does not seem like there is a relevant connection between my site going down and the explanations they post.

Conundrum: Send email to support (at) dream host dot com and a repy tells me to use the control panel which I can’t get to because of the stalling and time-outs. Hmmm

Dear wife: i didn´t wanted to jump that bridge, but downhost, sorry, dreamhost, didn´t left me any other way out……

Ok that was the begining of my almost-last letter. Thanks god you published the update. Now please, let´s get those dns and mysql up again. I´m glad it is night (here), i can only PRAY for those that are on day hours. Good look palls.

Severity “LOW?” I’m losing clients and the severity is LOW? We just sent out a blast to 6000 people asking them to click through to be added to a list and see our new Web site. Which is down. As is the panel.

Severity “LOW?” SEVERITY: UNFORGIVABLE.

I’ve been here since 03. This pretty much proves you do get what you pay for. It’s time to upgrade and pay for better service.

If it’s only the secondary, why is everything so slow/inaccessible? With the primary working shouldn’t I at least be able to get to the web panel?

Ditto on Urbanist’s comment — this is NOT “low severity.”

To those asking for a new service, I recently switched my most active website to Bluehost. Having been with them for just two weeks or so, I can’t vouch for their continued downtime, but they seemed to come on top in terms of host reviews online.

I would recommend searching around a bit, for sites like http://www.webhostingtalk.com.

anyone else had good experiences with site5? :)

JLoft I too would have been completing my 2 years next month thank god I did not renew, I got pissed off as I started getting lots of problem since last few months.

These guys are just adding new users without any plan on expansion, this is what will eventually happen when they start shoving users without any plans.

No plans or not I am definitely leaving their hosting plan and moving to a dedicated server which me and my friend will fund to run my sites. We also plan to have hosting for users but only for limited users.

Well, I still CURRENTLY have FTP access….we’ll see if it lasts ;p I WANT TO WORK, DREAMHOST! PLEASE GET IT TOGETHER SOON AND STOP GOING DOWN EVERY DAY WHILE I ACTUALLY HAVE TIME TO BE ON!

Ummm….good luck?

Low Severity my butt T_T

@number-six and others busting this lie…

Bless you. It feels good to see others calling like it is. Now.. can folks volunteer alternatives? Renewal was due almost two months ago and I’ve been holding out ’til the last second to weigh my options.

Bluehost? Seems that their DNS and subdomain options aren’t as flexible.
Hostgator?
Site5 looks like a decent service to me.

C’mon. I really could use some tips. DH has run out of goodwill with these fudges of the truth and “clarifications”(search earlier announcements).

http://t35.com ~ 99% uptime…. I use them, their awsome…. one problem…. 500MB storage 10GB bandwidth…. super fast servers though

down again, when needed for work…
PLEASE contact me with support

Cause you’re more improtant then getting the issue fixed. ;)

Looks like I made a bad move coming over here 2 months ago - support was a real pain when we needed a rush to get onto the new private server for a two day event that got national coverage - had to register another domain and setup a dedicate box on hostgator - only to find they are a reseller and don’t have physical access to the hardware.

After doing a lot of research on more powerful configs, I just bought a VPS from liquidweb because of this outage.

Ohhhhhhhhh maaaaaaaaah gaaaaaaawd!

I kan’t believe this rat whole hosting company went and done this again. It’s the third time this week we done got no website to show for out ice creamin’ business. If they don’t understand that we gotta sell our ice cream to the town folks, then we are going to have to take our business to another place. There’s gotta be someone ’round here with a good idea on where I can put my homepage thing up at, so I can not have it goin’ down all the time.

Anyone wanna help a old country fok?

I opened a support ticket on this 4+ hours ago and all they said was, “I’m able to SSH into your server. Are you getting any error messages?
Did a firewall change that might be blocking the connection now?” Uhh your whole network is crashing around your head and you have no idea!? 500,000 domains…. How many working?

Guys I will keep you updated with our hosting plans, the promise is not as much dreamhost gives you all, the promise is reliability with 99% uptime we have 8 dedicated servers sitting in colo at new york which is one of the best colo and guarantees a 99.9% uptime.

If anyone wants to move contact me at my contact site but due to this stupid guys it should be down, but if your interested contact me at keith dot techie at gmail dot com and I will check with my friend about costs etc.

My friend is caught in the California fire so he is inaccessible at this point but by next month everything should be setup. UPTIME is our motto. DH provides bandwith and Drive space 90% of which none of their users use.

httpme.com is great in terms of tech support, WHM, CPanel and stability, but the prices are definitely higher. I’ve been with them also for about 3 years and haven’t had a problem that wasn’t fixed within minutes. Plus separate support servers and status servers at different datacenters.

The hosting biz is kinda funny right now. The economics of the biz have pretty much eliminated the middle ground and what’s left is expensive dedicated hosting (mostly good) and cheap shared hosting (mostly bad). Some of the virtual hosting schemes look like they will probably fill a middle niche at some point but many of them are pretty immature (read: not real reliable or still have significant problems).

There was a good post the other day on the TidBITS talk forum from chuck goolsbee (who runs digital forest) that talked about the state of the industry:

http://emperor.tidbits.com/webx?14@@.3cb4f98c/1

HTH,

-S

Secondary DNS problem? Um… yeah guys… that’s why I’m getting near 50% packet loss pinging your entrypoint from Global Crossing. Pretty bad on my webserver too:

$ traceroute kratos.dreamhost.com

9 ge6-1-10g.ar3.lax2.gblx.net (67.17.110.2) 173.212 ms 173.040 ms 173.331 ms
10 * 64.209.105.26 (64.209.105.26) 171.254 ms 304.033 ms
11 kratos.dreamhost.com (208.113.137.32) 171.723 ms 171.610 ms *

$ ping 64.209.105.26
— 64.209.105.26 ping statistics —
41 packets transmitted, 23 packets received, 43% packet loss

$ ping kratos.dreamhost.com
— kratos.dreamhost.com ping statistics —
42 packets transmitted, 29 packets received, 30% packet loss

And to people claiming their machine is ‘down’: no, the only thing down is their routing, either internal probs or out of bandwidth…

Note to Dreamhost staff::PLEASE Employ an I.T. / P.R. person to communicate with customers during outages… Then explain what gets done to ensure it can’t happen again… That’s sustainable growth and healthy communication…

Redundancy, Redundancy, Redundancy…

And to anyone with criticism WITHOUT POSITIVE suggestions? Take it elsewhere… I only want to hear about solutions, insight, and collaboration…

I have a VPS account since ‘04 at http://westhost.com/ (refer to reunionhall.org so I can get a kickback!)

I’m the one that causes my problems there, not them.

Hi Man,

Unfortunately, I moved from another host to dreamhost few days back. Please don’t let me to go back!

HURRY UP AND F###ING FIX THIS. THANKS.

How geograpphically redundant is DH’s nameservers? if this is a secondary nameserver, why is my website behaving as if a critical-path primary point of failure has failed????

well i was able to get into the ftp and download everything just in case there is a bigger problem than they say

Mine are back up, and I’m back in the panel… evidently we’ll all be fine soon.

Hey NightmareHost, I hope you can have a history about downtimes this year, and when you rebill us you consider that history I gave us at least 1 month free.

One solution: Invest more money on your people, not on your hardware, don´t hire kids or people without a Bachelor Degree, not evening for a recepcionist.

Hey Sabo, i don’t have a degree and I’m a damn good worker. take your close mindedness on that issue somewhere else.

So I’m looking at: hostgator, site5, mediatemple, bluehost, t35 and liquidweb. I like how hostgator lets me tag along with their eNom reseller account. Does anyone have good, bad or otherwise about any of these?

ALL websites off and dreamhost.com mais page neverrrrrrrrrrrrrrr come off

FUCK YOU!!!

My panel is down, site is down, ftp is down. Everything is down. Right when I actually needed to upload something, and update my new interface. IT’S DOWN.

Thanks dreamhost. Not! Please fix soon because you guys are sucking it up right now.

Does this outage has anything to do with the fire in South Cal?

@Sabo says: “…don´t hire kids or people without a Bachelor Degree, not evening for a recepcionist.”

Or a proofreader!

I wonder who Dreamhost hosts their front page with. I want to host my stuff with THOSE people.

Dreamhost sucks my balls!

Just migrated several hundred domains and a few tousand emails from Oregon to DreamHost after a win storm in Oregon I hope this outage in not due to the fire…

I WISH DREAMHOST WOULD DIE IN THE FIRE!!!!!!!!

Well guys, here we go again. I love supporting the underdogs, but that’s only if they stay above water…

The panel is great, the features awesome. If they could just fix these uptime problems I would be incredibly happy. Even if they made a “reliable group”. I’d pay extra.

By the way, I was checking out some of our websites (the ones that are up!), and I have to say, good job! Some interesting stuff out there.

i’m up.

Starting to wonder if I could get better uptime hosting my websites from home. I hope your have fired a few people lately because things are getting beyond a joke.

dreamhoststatus.com is on ip 208.96.10.218 which appears to be hosted by ServePath http://www.servepath.com/ in San Francisco.

Thank you! Keep the good job!

“Anyone with a GOOD hosting company that actually keeps the uptime they promote?”

My business sites are on iquesthosting.com and they are up 100% been with them for almost 10 years now. :-)

Dreamhost has been good to me for almost 3 years now… down a couple of times… but not for that long. I just do not have my business sites with them :-)

@Kursa

you just beat me to it!

This is ridiculous, you guys need to start reimbursing us for these sort of outages!

“Comments posted here may not be viewed by DreamHost staff at all. This is not a way to contact DreamHost.”

Maybe we should cut and paste this entire page with comments to the Dreamhost support people so thet do fricken read them!

This is pretty bad. It’s so slow that my sites, FTP, and even the panel are pretty much unusable. For over an hour now. I’m not as pissed off as some of these people are, but “Severity: Low” is insulting.

Dreamhost needs to have a mechanism for reporting service outages, independent of the panel, and that doesn’t require a ticket (but will not be giving anything more than an auto-response saying the message has been received and the info will be passed on to their tech dept.)

I hope that there will soon be light at the end of this hellish tunnel we are in, I am near the beginning of my 2 year term (but not near enough to get my money back). I suppose on a positive note, by the time they get this fixed the servers should all be running easy because they will have lost so many clients. The service is bad enough right now, that it would be unattractive if they were giving it away.

DH goes down more often than a horny housewife

RE: Hostgator—I just ditched an account there to come to DH about a month ago. Was reselling their $7/mo. plan for 4 years with almost 0 problems uptime-wise, but be warned, customer service and billing structure are BEYOND abysmal. I’ve heard good things about site5.

At least I’m still in my 60-day trial! :)

HAHA @Pete, 2 points for you.

Starting aroun 12:30 AM EST I noticed a lag when loading http://www.dreamhost.com — I can’t even log into panel.dreamhost.com. As of 1:40 AM EST my sites are showing only bare text. WTF? Dreamhost has PERFECT F***ING timing.

Fuck it, my sites haven’t even been working properly 50 percent of the time for the past week. I’m going back to hostmonster, never had any sorts of problems like this with them. Hell, I’d be better off with godaddy at this rate. Qualityhostonline.com wasn’t too bad either, a little short on the features, but no downtime for the 2 years I was with them.

This is interesting. I’ve no access to any of my client’s sites or my own sites for over an hour and this is low severity. Pretty lame.

Of course… I could look for a new host. I may or may not.

October 23rd, 2007 at 10:44 pmilovedreamhost Says:

Dear dreamhost,

with all due respect, if you’re overloaded with customers, please, stop accepting customers anymore and start focusing on maintaining your servers. If you still want more customers, then make sure you can handle them all. It’s not business anymore if you’re pushing yourself too hard. It’s mass suicide. (you kill yourself and us!)

I am not saying that you’re bad. but i am worried about your reputation now. i used to never find the words “dreamhost sucks” or “dreamhost scam” on search results, but now i do. so please listen to us, your loyal customers.

Those who want to quit dreamhost, good for you. pack your things fast and go so it will be good for us! :-)

Thanks for the update, was wondering why I could not connect to any of my sites and http://ftp. How long is it gonna take to repair this issue?

Woah, now that I look at it, qualityhostonline.com has upped their features big time since I last used em, but still remain dirt cheap, with great deals/packages. I’m going back to them.

hehe…….my next big project is on 1&1. pray for me…..

Some of us do rely on our sites, and therefore dreamhost, for an income…

By what arbitrary metric do you guys calculate the severity? Considering all your services are affected, I’d say ‘Low’ is a tad ignorant.

We’re building a site to launch tomorrow and this happened. We’ve been down to long. So…
I just opened a Media Temple account.
One customer gone from this outage.
Bye Dreamhost, it’s been real. It’s been fun. But it hasn’t been real fun…

Thanks for the fix guys.

Been through quite a few hosts the last 12 years. There’s nothing I dread more than the “it’s an upstream problem with our provider” excuse following a period of escalating downtimes. At that point, I figure the “upstream provider” problem is from letting contracts with “redundant” connectivity providers lapse, due to imminent sell-out that’s announced two or three months down the road, usually to a bigger (and likely foreign based) hosting provider with lousy service. Will be interested to see if the pattern plays out once again.

hahaha…what do you expect for 20 dollars a year.

Severity Upgraded from Low to Medium.

Hope it won’t get Medium to High..

Mug and the panel are up for me. Everything seems to be working for me. Email/SQL/HTTP/SSH/FTP/DH panel are all working. Is it still down for anyone else?

I just signed up with http://www.hostgator.com. This downtime is ridiculous and I’m ready to change.

October 23rd, 2007 at 11:24 pmoverdrivediamond Says:

I signed up for site5 and I’m still waiting for the phone verification…maybe I should try hostgator

You broke the internets, muddafuckers

We’re back! Everything’s up and running @ reasonable speeds….

My sites went back on line; at least, long enough to ftp the pages I was working on all evening while waiting for the window to open. At least I can go to bed now. Time will tell what tomorrow brings.

For those who consider to ditch DreamHost, you can try VistaPages.com. It offers much more features than DreamHost and is highly reliable.

All my websites are working. Tkanks ;-)

“For those who consider to ditch DreamHost, you can try VistaPages.com. It offers much more features than DreamHost and is highly reliable.”

Not according to the MANY, MANY, MANY TERRIBLE reviews I’ve seen at WHT, not to mention the ZERO good reviews I’ve seen. And I recall one thread sometime last year that went into some detail about the owner being a pretty shady character, even aside from being the type to spam other host’s blogs.

Does this have anything to do with http://status.cogentco.com/ reporting some problems at this time? (The website of another web host of equal wonderful-ness appears to be offline.)

B - Almost all networks are going to be having these issues. Cogent in almost entirely in DownTown Los Angeles, and the network there is somewhat far from the fires, but because of the fires, networks all over are on high alert.

FYI, the mysql error “WordPress database error: [Table ‘xxxdb.wp_terms’ doesn’t exist]” is because your Wordpress install has been upgraded to 2.3 from whatever version it was before and the database hasn’t been updated. If you go to your Wordpress login page, there will be a big button to push that should fix it automatically.

My blog is offline since yesterday, and DreamHost support team simply stopped to ’support’ me. Thank God this november my contract with DH ends. I’m saying Goog Bye and going to BlueHost.

@Thassius - If it’s the site you linked, it works for me. Maybe DH isn’t the problem.

Only took them nearly a day to notice/deal with a problem of this scale… for Dreamhost that’s impressive. See, round here, you’re expected to deal with their responses on the Special Olympics scale, because they think they’re cheap and therefore they’re SPECIAL. (New place is giving us a better deal and 99.9 percent guaranteed uptime next month, whee, almost done dealing with this crap)

So, everybody gets a HUG for TRYING! Come on now, bless their little hearts, they’re overcoming such insurmountable handicaps being as it’s become fairly clear most of their staff lacks opposable thumbs.

Nightmare’s almost over… almost…

@brasscrest - yeah, I could make some parts of this work. But that’s not everything. They (DH) simply disabled a database.

I’m down AGAIN; was up just before for maybe 45 minutes max.

Moaning from Bali,

Chris

Life is what you make it!

Matt — Yeah, I live and work just a few miles from the DH Brea offices, and it’s been tough just trying to breathe, and people commuting… I can only imagine that LA’d be much more… interesting…

Send support tickets or e-mail for unrelated issues, folks (I write about 12 hours later…).

This is soo not fixed, I can’t get to panel.dreamhost.com or _ANY_ of my domains hosted with dreamhost. I know that shit happens, but this is three freaking nights in a row when I have had time to work on the sites that dreamhost has been down. I would submit a ticket, but I can’t get to panel.dreamhost.com.

Guess what, all my sites are freakin’ dead AGAIN !!!

Wow, back up! That’s refreshing, ‘only’ 20 minutes. I remember the time that 20 minutes was a long, long time on DH, but nowadays that’s very considered quick.

I Think ,İt’s very nice…

Don’t switch to Qualityhostonline. They’ve been a diasaster recently. In just two weeks time i´ve experienced long downtimes. The first was 2-3 days before i noticed and now i just realised all my sites have been down the whole weekend. Most likely for the same reason as last time, and all they would have had to do was check that sites were up after making config changes. There is simply no excuse for this. Forget about Qualiyhostonline. I’ve begun looking for another hosting company.
