Scheduled maintenance on central services
Thursday October 25th at 9:00PM PDT we will be performing maintenance on the following services.
Dreamhost Panel (panel.dreamhost.com)
Dreamhost.com
Mailboxes Web interface (http://mailboxes.dreamhost.com)
Dreamhost Scripts (http://scripts.dreamhost.com)
We do not expect any downtime of these services but there may be a few short outages while we shuffle things around. The purpose of this maintenance is to improve the performance and reliability of all of these services by moving them to bigger and better load balancers.
Update; 10:30pm: We’ve found some problems with database creation and administration on the Webpanel, (and one-click installs). The admin team is working to fix it right now, so there’s no need to contact us about it. We’ll post an update when it’s resolved.
- Update Thu Oct 25 23:33:33 PDT 2007 -
Database creation and administration via the web panel is working properly again. The sign-up page on dreamhost.com was broken for awhile. We’ve had to make some last minute changes to get account registration working again. If you have any problems accessing the sign-up page, you can reach it directly here:
https://signup.dreamhost.com
If you do encounter any broken links to the sign-up page, please let support know.

Yay!
October 24th, 2007 at 1:33 pm
YAY Dreamhost!
Haha…lovin the output of http://scripts.dreamhost.com right now:
“asdf”
October 24th, 2007 at 2:14 pm
what does http://scripts.dreamhost.com do?
October 24th, 2007 at 2:51 pm
Ah men, always in midday (timezone CEST) … well, in fact no prob, I can live without the sites for a few hours. Thanks for the notify. … asdf? isn’t it always ‘asd’… It’s what I always type. Oh wait, you guys have more expriences and you type with 4 fingers :P. DH is pretty slow? well, I got my domain at 110 KB/s. For what I/we pay it’s just reasonable. I also have another domain, same price but just 1.5 GB instead 200GB+. Download speeds 2mb/s duh. You choosed cheap so that’s how it is. DH looks like santa but in fact they really do earn and willing to get money. Yes really, but that’s a secret between you and me.
October 24th, 2007 at 6:55 pm
Sometimes my pages load like like 20x slower and some images are missing.
October 24th, 2007 at 7:15 pm
Slowwwwwwwwww
October 24th, 2007 at 7:45 pm
my site down, but ftp is up
October 24th, 2007 at 7:46 pm
Probably got to open a few windows and blow the smoke smell out of the building. It’s been a wild week so far.
October 24th, 2007 at 7:49 pm
I was typing a blog post too, when I started typing, my site was still up, after I finished, click submit, site was down. Dunno if wordpress saved my draft or not, it was a long long post…
October 24th, 2007 at 7:52 pm
Can we get an email about these outages please!!! I don’t come here every hour just to check on your status or planned outage. I need to be notified in advance by email.
October 24th, 2007 at 8:35 pm
Or you could just subscribe to the RSS feed like everyone else.
October 24th, 2007 at 8:41 pm

i learnd a long time ago with other services (not dreamhost) that when you write a long post you highlight all of it, right click, and hit COPY. just incase it goes in to the internet blackhole
October 25th, 2007 at 6:53 am
To the bloggers above - I have a question (not being a WordPress user, I might need a little education). Why do you bother typing blog posts directly into the page? I would think that it would be much safer to type the entry in a text editor, then simply cut and paste into the form. Particularly for a long entry.
October 25th, 2007 at 11:38 am
brasscrest…why would anyone do that *said with sarcasm*
great idea. also, less blogs would also be full of typos…
i have always just saved drafts in wordpress…and very often. i have learned to save…being in the design industry for almost 20 years…I know what losing something you worked on for hours and didn’t save…and coblam…your application or system crashes…
October 25th, 2007 at 2:00 pm
If you’re already having problems from this maintenance, then it’s a placebo effect. The post said 6pm PDT, that’s still an hour away I believe. Anyone else having email problems? i can log in and check mail just fine, but msgs are bouncing saying no such user as me.
October 25th, 2007 at 5:18 pm
@Peter - “The post said 6pm PDT,”
Now you’ve got me confused. I read the post as saying 9pm PDT .. Wtf are you seeing?
October 25th, 2007 at 9:34 pm
My IMAP mail and webspae are down, and your seemingly forthcoming note here does not mention that this should be the case; in fact, it denies that this will happen as it is right now. Please be truthful.
October 25th, 2007 at 9:38 pm
panel.dreamhost.com is down as of 9:37PM PST.
October 25th, 2007 at 9:38 pm
Both the servers I’m on went down. I saw no mention of any server names going down. I wouldn’t be so irritated, but I was in the middle of uploading, and now I’m going to have to start that massive upload all over again.
I should learn by now maintainance with DH = everything takes a shit, not just what they claim.
October 25th, 2007 at 9:39 pm
On schedule
October 25th, 2007 at 9:40 pm
dreamhost.com, panel.dreamhost.com and my site are down. FTP to my site is down too.
October 25th, 2007 at 9:40 pm
Yup. All down
October 25th, 2007 at 9:40 pm
Site down for the third time this week … this …. week
I love you guys but … come on!
October 25th, 2007 at 9:40 pm
All my stuff is down too, I suspect they probably know this by now.
October 25th, 2007 at 9:43 pm
my ftp is down now as well…
is anyone interested in some sort of class action to paypal over this stuff??
im guessing over 80% of us paid that way.
its riduculous and im tired of hearing youget what you pay for, yeah i paid for a working website that doesnt go down every fN night while i actually have time to work!
i also paid for tons of bandwidth whcih i cant use cause my site is down 2-5% of teh day
October 25th, 2007 at 9:44 pm
Hey you got your downtime in my peanut butter!
October 25th, 2007 at 9:44 pm
Yep. Webmail down. Web site down. Web panel down.
…and no mention of the latest major outage here. Again.
October 25th, 2007 at 9:45 pm
Damn it my site is down again, wtf is happening you stupid fools. This is not tolerable and I cannot tolerate this anymore you are runing my revenue you dont understand every thing is down what the hell
October 25th, 2007 at 9:45 pm
Has FTP stopped working for everyone else, too? I really wish we’d get some fucking emails about this shit. Having to check in here all the time is patently absurd.
October 25th, 2007 at 9:45 pm
All my sites are down. Server is “pound.” panel.dreamhost.com is inaccessible too. Can’t contact support.
October 25th, 2007 at 9:47 pm
I’d like a copy of their dictionary. I’d love to see how they define; no downtime, short outage, low, medium, severe, high, reliability, performance… I could go on. They certainly don’t define them the same way I do.
October 25th, 2007 at 9:49 pm
im on sunnyd and im down again!
October 25th, 2007 at 9:50 pm
WTF is this? All 5 of my sites are down right now.
Yeah, this shouldn’t affect most things huh?
October 25th, 2007 at 9:51 pm
Is there any eta on when things will be back up? I’ve got 10+ sites dead in the water…
October 25th, 2007 at 9:51 pm
Remember people, these guys are in the middle of massive wildfires where several people have died, a million evacuated, and over 1000 families have lost their homes.
Cut them some slack, they got a lot of crap going on in their backyard. It has gotta be taxing the systems when power poles burn down.
October 25th, 2007 at 9:51 pm
All 5 of my sites are down too. Sigh.
October 25th, 2007 at 9:52 pm
I guess I could complain, but then again I got this year of hosting for $9.30…
As for the dictionary quip… technically their dictionary is whatever they want, when it comes to advertising the meaning of words or phrases goes out the window and becomes whatever the business entity desires, hence why everything is the ‘best’ product or the ‘most value’ everywhere you look.
October 25th, 2007 at 9:54 pm
No offense to any of the people affected by the wildfires… but please tell me what that has to do with them scheduling maintainance, doing said maintainance, and breaking every damn server they have?
Unless their building is on fire, then I don’t see the point in what you’re saying.
My heart goes out to those affected; but not to a hosting service that rarely delivers on what they say.
October 25th, 2007 at 9:55 pm
Doug, I’m not talking advertising, I’m talking about the terms they use when describing these problems, or these outages. I could care less what they advertise with, I’m already a customer. I do, however, hate being lied to about the severity of a problem, or whether or not all the servers are going to be affected.
October 25th, 2007 at 9:57 pm
My sites are all back up it seems…
October 25th, 2007 at 10:00 pm
Yup - everything seems to be up again.
October 25th, 2007 at 10:02 pm
Finally. And, as I suspected, I’ve got to start that download again. Thanks DH!
Hopefully we won’t have another freak outage while I sleep.
October 25th, 2007 at 10:23 pm
Back up now. Wasn’t too bad I guess.
October 25th, 2007 at 10:53 pm
Not back to normal quite yet - my panel is all screwey looking despite being functional… no css or something going on.
And I was one of the users (and seemingly still am) that can’t create MySQL databases.
October 25th, 2007 at 10:56 pm
Was just able to create a database… hope that helps in your resolution…?!
But my dreamhost panel is still all screwy looking
October 26th, 2007 at 12:13 am
@linewbie.com, owned!
October 26th, 2007 at 8:16 pm
Maybe should use a 24×7 monitoring service like www.youmonitor.us. Sends u a text message on phone if your site is down and it’s free.
October 27th, 2007 at 2:55 pm
I Think ,İt’s very nice…
