5.6 Earthquake in San Francisco

Posted (October 30th, 2007 at 8:56 pm PST) by kitchen

Just writing to let everyone know that this doesn’t appear to have affected our San Francisco servers at all, nor our LA datacenters (didn’t feel it at all in LA)

Hope everything is ok up in San Francisco! We’ll be thinking about you!

For those interested, here’s information from the USGS about the earthquake…

Wow! Glad none of the servers fell from the racks!

Time to expand keeping everything on one coast is a very bad idea. Time to spread out to TX and VA maybe do mirroring to increase redundancy.

all’s well in SF.

Actually the quake was just east of San Jose — on the Hayward Fault, not the San Andreas. I know everything’s a blur north of Santa Barbara, but SF and San Jose are actually about an hour away from each other. ;)

so then why were half the scripts on one of the sites I help manage restored from backups and ended up breaking about 2/3 the site?

other than that nice you got off unscathed

Europe is very stable :) There are no earthquakes…
Hopefully nobody get hurt.

Umm it seems to have affected something, my site is completely completely down, on spacey I think it was called

I pray everyone and their families are safe and sound.

and yet janky email is down yet again.

Mine are down right now. Looks like someone needs to move to Michigan ;)
Hopefully everything is ok though.

Silly DH - you could have used it as an excuse for the regular service interruptions.

Who said that DH doesn’t rock :P

I hadn’t really worried about earthquakes and hosting locations. Now I do.

im legally blind and even i can read it. if your having a problem CONTACT SUPPORT. sheesh, maybe they should do the blog in audio and SCREAM the part about contacting support.

Thank God, no down time is good!

Good that nothing bad is happening.

Anyone else having issues with database. both of my domains are down since it cant read the database. what is going on…..

I wonder what would happen if Cali had another large quake. I’m sure someone would be screaming its Dreamhosts fault that their sites are down.

I have a hard time sympathizing with people who complain about their hosting woes when a natural (impending) disaster strikes. Honestly, is your world THAT small?

Let’s put it this way… it could have been a LOT worse. DH could have been completely demolished by the quake, along with thousands of other businesses and lives. What would you complain about then?

Sometimes, it’s best to be thankful for what DOESN’T happen and ride the wave.

@Larry, nah I think they’d try to blame it on FEMA.

@paul, haha :)

my webmail wont work…boo

Hey Boo
What does that have to do with the Earhquake?

my webmail wont work…boo

You should then probably submit a support ticket, rather than post it on a website the staff openly admit they don’t check on for downtime related problems, to an entry that has nothing to do with downtime problems, hm? That’d be my first reaction but I’ve been told I’m pretty unusual.

IMAP has been flaky for a couple of hours (in keeping with Dreamhost’s drive toward sustained mediocrity - what do you expect for 8 bucks a month?). I’ve opened a ticket, but I’m not holding my breath. In most cases the problem is resolved before I receive an earnest response from their support staff.

Guys, just go reboot something… thanks.

I’ve opened a ticket, but I’m not holding my breath.

Brilliant. Now you just need to not post about your problem on an entry that has absolutely nothing to do with *any* problem at all, and you’ll officially be a whole lot smarter than every other winer.

@James - thanks for looking out for us non-topic miscreants. Did you perhaps forget your medication this morning?

I participated in a conversation that had co-opted the topic and rendered the topic irrelevant. Deal with it.

As for the earthquake - give me a break. I live in SJ and felt the darn thing under my ass. The DH servers in SF probably feel more when one of their sys-admins breaks wind.

So…does this mean our websites will be down again at the regularly scheduled time? Just kidding…well, sort of. ;-)

That’s a dinky quake.

fyi, since it doesn’t seem to have been posted:

Hello,

We are sorry for the temporary problems you had with logging in to your mail. One of our load balancers crashed and took a few minutes to come back up. In turn, that caused Courier (POP and IMAP services) to freak out. It was all back up and running within 10 or 15 minutes. We did extensive testing once everything came back up and it looks like everything is back to normal now. If you continue to have problems though, please let us know.

Note: This was an announcement sent about a major support incident. Our apologies if you submitted a callback. If you are having problems still please let us know and we will be happy to help.

Thanks!

If it wipes you guys out, I won’t be worried about my sites being up either (as I live on the same coast :D )

I’d love to. Unfortunately they don’t let people who aren’t DH employees ban the ignorant from contributing absolutely nothing relevant to the current discussion, so instead I’ll just point out, yet again, that you sir are a moron. Deal with it.

“Hello my name is James and everyone must do as I say and post in the proper place, because life is serious and I have a big gay hardon for serious things like where people post their thoughts. I should be put in control of the entire internet, because only I know how to organize it correctly, being the anal retentive nimrod that I am.”

James, you are a tosser. Fack off.

James, you are a tosser. Fack off.

I do have to give you about a half point for creativity. Sadly, your internet usage license should still be revoked until you come to the realization that you’re only making yourself look like an idiot, and me very amused. Unless that was what you were going for, which which case great job. Now kindly cancel your internet service, moron.

hahaha listen to yourself. “I’m Mr Responsible. I know everything. Puny mortal, tremble in the presence of my greatness!” Wow, what a self-centered asshole.

You could have stopped at asshole, but thanks just the same. Oh, sorry, was that meant to be an insult? I’ve heard worse said to my face by people with an IQ higher than 3.

So you’ve had worse said to your face by people with an IQ higher than 3? ..so that’s, like, pretty much everyone on the planet. Why am I not surprised. The fact that ANYONE says that to your face should really give you a clue…

The fact that ANYONE says that to your face should really give you a clue…

Yeah, most of them didn’t particularly like it when they turned out to be half braindead either. But that’s okay, at least you’re not alone.

I know you are but what am I INFINITY!!!

Thought about it, but y’know, pissing you off just gets that much more entertaining the longer it goes on. Oh, and, for the record, commenting works perfectly fine for everyone else. Although I guess it’s only fair it took me all of about 30 seconds to fix the majority of those errors. As for the rest? It’s only html. The world won’t come to a grinding hault just because the w3c’s validator doesn’t like where I stick this or that tag. It works fine from an individual web browser perspective, which again, was all I was aiming for.

James & james #2 you guys have some serious issues that you have to work out. Wow. Anyways yes its interesting to think about what would happen in a quake.
