Updated: frisky cluster having issues

The server ‘edsel’ is having issues mounting its file servers, which is causing home directories to be ‘missing’ and sites to be down.

We are looking into the issue and hope to have a resolution shortly.

Thank you for your patience!

Update: 3:18am pacific: we have determined the cause and have temporarily worked around the issue. Unfortunately there are still sites which are going to be down, but most things should be up and running now. We will continue to update as we progress.

Update: 3:22am pacific: we have pinpointed the cause of the issue with edsel on one of our file servers ‘fozzie’. It appears to be affecting all of the frisky cluster, and we are working to resolve this issue as fast as we can.

Update: 3:42am pacific: access to ‘fozzie’ has been restored, although communication with it is still slow. We are continuing our investigation and hope to have a resolution soon!

Update: 3:49am pacific: guess the slowness was just everything getting all nice and cached everywhere. The Fozz appears to be back!

If you are still having problems, please contact support!

    Dear Folks @ Dreamhost,

I just can’t believe that you’re doing upgrades every second day. Some time the HTTP side does not work, other time the IMAP side does not work. It’s just a matter of time and a huge percent among the current DreamHost Customers will choose another provider. Very soon, if these problem won’t stop.

Please consider my opinion as I know that not I’m the only one who experiences these kinds of inconveniences.

    Best Regards,

    A DreamHost Customer

Let’s get this clear - What exactly is your opinion? Stop upgrades? Stop Fixing? Stop upgrades and get to fixing? In reading this specific post from DH, I find no reference to an upgrade which seems to be the point of your comment.

Thanks! So far the only downtime with you guys I’ve had was when I was sleeping. My server likes to break during peak traffic periods when I’m trying to get some time off the computer, so it’s nice to read something broke and was fixed when I’m drinking my morning coffee!

Thunderbird seems to be down or running slowly. And I can’t access the mail server at all (through Webmail or through POP).

    David Says:

^^ the IMAP/POP mail error is this: “ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server.”

    James Says:

The problem is not resolved for us. Our IMAP is still going down consistently every day around 11PM EST and staying down for an extended period of time. This is getting to the point where we’re going to have move the email off Dreamhost and somewhere else.

    Eric Says:

We are experiencing the same problem as James, and are considering the same actions. Our business runs off the emails we get to clients, and when email is inoperable for any longer than a few minutes, it really hinders, if not damages, the service we can provide to said clients.

Hi there, I will confirm the thoughts of folks that these error messages - specifically 111 - continues to show up day after day around the 10:00 CST. We are getting used to it but I am also getting ready to recommend we try to find another provider - it’s difficult to know how to run a business without e-mail these days. Any resolution or ideas or confirmation on how this will change for the client would be appreciated. We realize it’s not a perfect world, however, we need to have consistent, smooth-running service.

We really enjoy the hosting and services Dreamhost supplies and like the character of the people running the company(especially those contributing to your newsletter) but email outages are unacceptable and they happening with increasing frequency. PLEASE devote more resources to uptime (even at expense to expansion or improvements). We are dangerously close to having to change service for reliability reasons.

Two websites I work with — and one I manage — are now down, at 1:06 PM Pacific.

They went down not long ago, about a half hour ago. And they are down from the WEB completely.

I have FTP access to the one I manage.

Any idea why? Is this the same issue as last night, or is this something NEW?

    Tony Comstock Says:

Dreamhost’s nameservers appear to have been hacked. Our site, comstockfilms.com now resolves to phentermine-google.com. We have submitted a trouble ticket, but so far have had no response from Dreamhost.

    VOO Says:

“Dreamhost’s nameservers appear to have been hacked. Our site, comstockfilms.com now resolves to phentermine-google.com. We have submitted a trouble ticket, but so far have had no response from Dreamhost.”

I don’t guess there’s any way your site could have been hacked with a redirect, could it? You should try to FTP a blank HTML index page to your Dreamhost acct and see if your domain goes to that… if so, it is code that has been inserted into your website rather than something to do with Dreamhost.

  21. 21
    VOO Says:

BTW, before you do the above test, you should clean any other “index” or “home” pages out, especially anything PHP, otherwise your test will not be conclusive. My bets are on one of YOUR pages being hacked though, and I’m also betting you don’t have your own backups, or otherwise you’d just clean out your FTP space to rid yourself of hacked pages, then re-upload your site, thus insuring that you’ve not left any stray hacker code laying around.

Sounds like an awesome time to update whatever software you were using for your site too, as more than likely it was some sort of script exploitation on your CMS.

  22. 22
    VOO Says:

    One more thing…

If it were Dreamhost’s nameservers, don’t you think we’d ALL be affected, considering we ALL use the same nameservers? Really, you shouldn’t be so quick to blame Dreamhost for your site’s problems without doing a little basic Nancy Drew’ing.

  23. 23
    VOO Says:

Sorry, I just keep thinking of stuff. You should also delete your htaccess file during these tests, as it too could have been hacked with a redirect.

  24. 24
    VOO Says:

See, your subdomain works fine: http://shop.comstockfilms.com/

    YOU’VE been hacked, not Dreamhost.

  25. 25
    Tony Comstock Says:

I had the same redirect thought, but I deleted the old index page and uploaded a new one that simply said “test” on a white background. It still goes to phentermine-google.com/

  26. 26
    rlparker Says:

See, your subdomain works fine: http://shop.comstockfilms.com/

Just confirming VOO’s post above (not that he is ever wrong, being that Vice Of One speaks with The Lord frequently, and it is often the voice of The Lord that speaks through him).

DreamHost’s DNS is fine; your *site* on the other hand appears to have been goat-raped.

  27. 27
    VOO Says:

And that blank index is the ONLY thing in your FTP space? No hacked htacces, no hacked PHP file?

Try deleting your domain and re-adding it from the Domains / Manage Domains page in your panel, and even though Domain Tools shows DH nameservers, try resetting them, as sometimes DT is a tad slow to update that.

  28. 28
    VOO Says:

OH OH… also, go to your GoDaddy domain acct and make sure it isn’t being redirected there or anything…

  29. 29
    Tony Comstock Says:

turned out to be an .htaccess redirect hack. thank you (although I do wish you had saved the snippy attitude a bit, not everyone is as knowledgable as you are, and especially when upset, don’t always think of everything.)

“speaks with The Lord frequently, and it is often the voice of The Lord that speaks through him”

Unfortunately, He is on an important trip right now and we have been on our own for the last few days (which is why the Chaney impeachment didn’t go through), so I’m havin to man His operations solo and am hardly competent enough to fill such shoes! He should be back late Thursday evening though, and will probably not be happy with the reports on His desk.

(although I do wish you had saved the snippy attitude a bit, not everyone is as knowledgable as you are, and especially when upset, don’t always think of everything.)

Youre welcome. The snippyness comes from seeing you being so quick to blame Dreamhost, which can easily result in bullshit spreading around the net with cries of “Dreamhost is hacked!” if anyone came here and read it. I’m definitely sorry, but it’s something we see here way too much.

    James Says:

Frankly, I don’t think the current lack of reliability will be all that attractive when read here, either. At least with hacks there’s someone else to blame…

  35. 35
    VOO Says:

Bah. I just re-read my posts and was BARELY snippy. Grow some skin, don’t be such a weenus! You blamed others for YOUR faults, the honor of the blamed was defended… snippyness was somewhat deserved.

Had you said (in your original post) “Help, my site is going to another site and I don’t know why” you would have encountered no snippyness (from me, at least… you’re REALLY lucky that James Is An Idiot isn’t around right now!).

I’m doing my best to de-assholitize myself, as The Lord would be proud, but you are now pushing it little man!

  36. 36
    VOO Says:

“Frankly, I don’t think the current lack of reliability will be all that attractive when read here, either. At least with hacks there’s someone else to blame…”

STFU James… before The Lord banishes you to VistaPages for the rest of your life… then you’ll REALLY have something to whine about!

    Ka Says:

I’m also having troubles… I tried to FTP in this afternoon about 1:30pm MST, and it wouldn’t connect. Or rather, it did connect (so the server probably isn’t down) but it never finished logging in and wound up timing out. The same thing happens on my web panel–it will load, but nothing I click on will load, it just waits and waits and then times out. However, in general, my site index loads and images and such already uploaded still load. I haven’t tried the javascript I have running yet. I’ve tried to FTP in again about 6PM and 6:30PM, same result.

It’s causing me some trouble as I’m trying to upload some art for a portfolio I want to make, and this afternoon I couldn’t upload a homework paper I wrote and had to hunt for my flash drive instead and was almost late… I mean, it won’t kill me if it doesn’t work temporarily since I’m not running a business, but I really wish it would be resolved soon.

I’m on lovejoy, in case that helps.

    omg Says:

James - Dude - I don’t know what is causing your email problems but somehow I’ve managed to keep a live web page connection to two different imap accounts for 4 days straight. Now given the reliability I often see these never usually last more than a few hours. So, for it to be failing like you describe for everyone, there’s no way that could have happened.

NOTE: My ISP sucks and regularly drops huge numbers of packets every evening causing things like Vonage to not work worth a damn. I’m trying to figure out how to blame it on dreamhost.

@VOO - Nice diagnostics there VOO.
