Promo Codes Max Discount Dropping to $50
Effective next Tuesday, December 11th, $97 will no longer be the maximum discount a DreamHost promo code can give.. it will be dropped to $50. Keep in mind, $97 is still the total value of a referral.. so if somebody signs up with your $50 promo code you’ll still get $47 ($97-$50) credited to your account.
All existing promo codes will keep working, but will only give $50 maximum discount now. If your promo code offered extra disk, bandwidth, domain registrations, ips, etc.. those will still work, and continue to cut into the $97 you earn for a referral (so it IS possible to earn less than $47 still, if you give out feature bonuses).
That’s all really! Go forth and spread the word that this is the last week of $97 off promo codes!

Will this extra $47 in revenue go towards ensuring that mail being forwarded to gmail will be delivered in a timely manner?
December 4th, 2007 at 3:18 pm
Interesting how this is posted on DreamHost _STATUS_ blog.
Of course, _THE_ DreamHost blog is reserved for the stuff that makes the company look super-cool.
December 4th, 2007 at 3:20 pm
@todd They aint making any extra revenue out of this, so I guess mail forwarded to gmail will not be delivered in a timely manner. The only thing that changes is that new users cannot get the entire $97 reward themselves, they only get a max $50 off their new plan while the referred gets the remaining $47.
December 4th, 2007 at 3:22 pm
@jakaj I agree with you on that one. This is something that should be emailed to everyone not posted on a status page. You really need to email your customers with this information Dreamhost.
December 4th, 2007 at 3:38 pm
This information IS being emailed to everyone. Keep an eye out for the monthly newsletter. It went out today.
December 4th, 2007 at 3:39 pm
@jakaj: This is actually going to be released in our monthly newsletter so that everybody knows. This status post is actually a verbatim copy and paste from the upcoming newsletter.
December 4th, 2007 at 3:42 pm
Well I don’t get my newsletter to this moment and also can see a copy of it on the wiki… how about posting in the forum?
December 4th, 2007 at 4:09 pm
I think this is a smart move (wherever it’s announced). So many people were giving away their total referral that it effectively made the referral program moot. Thanks for rewarding your loyal customers!
December 4th, 2007 at 5:08 pm
It asks more commitment from the new user. I think it is good to reduce the money-back ration.
December 4th, 2007 at 5:19 pm
Since my mail gets forwarded to gmail, I’ll prolly be waiting awhile for that newsletter.
December 4th, 2007 at 5:54 pm
can we have the option to edit our promo code now? I give $80 off with my promo code with a description “$80 off”. Now, it will be misleading if this new policy take effect. They will see an “$80 off” description but they will only get $50 off.
December 4th, 2007 at 5:57 pm
You’d have to talk to support. We’re generally just users here.
I’d recommend making a new code and disabling the old in the control panel on the 11th.
December 4th, 2007 at 6:57 pm
HA!!!!! to those who haven’t figured it out…get your promo codes out and help the newcomers in the forum…it means you don’t just give away all 97 dollars…you get 47 fer yerself!!!
lol
December 4th, 2007 at 8:05 pm
Jesmullia:
HA!!!!! “Figuring that out” will probably only work for a *very short time* till those same folks who were giving away all $97 create promo codes with enough “extras” to eat up that extra “47 for yourself”.
But, helping newcomers in the forum is *always* a “Good Thing(tm)” , so I say “Amen, and pass the ammunition” to that.

Hi don’t know if this is the right place to post this but I have a Dreamhost promo code TOP1 which should give $50 off
December 5th, 2007 at 6:01 am
@Jasper -
This probably isn’t the place.
December 5th, 2007 at 7:04 am
please put the money saved into building a reliable e-mail system
December 5th, 2007 at 9:20 am
I wonder how many illiterate people will keep mentioning putting the “money saved” somewhere, even though the second sentence says, “Keep in mind, $97 is still the total value of a referral.”
It doesn’t really change anything as far as how much the affiliate makes. That extra $47 will only go to affiliates that are currently making $47 with $50 promo codes. Otherwise, the ones that max the features & cash combos still win.
In other words, it’s still the same as trying to put a $50 promo code up against a $97 one.
If it was about helping affiliates earn, then there would have been a max TOTAL that could be given away, whether it’s cash, features, or both.
The reason is probably just to slow down the sign-ups and let things level off a little… until the next crazy sale or promo. Even though the IPs & domains are a better value, a lot of people still just love to see the low price for the first year.
It certainly isn’t to save them money, since it costs them the same. Then again, less sign-ups = less payouts.
The only ones it affects are new sign-ups.
Or it could just be a marketing gimmick to see how many sign-ups they can get between now and when the discount drops.
December 5th, 2007 at 9:21 am
Jasper, I’m pretty sure the TOS mentions something about how being a spamming dirtbag is a good way to get your rewards account terminated.
December 5th, 2007 at 12:06 pm
I just want to know what happens with samus, I cant use my website, please remove that PROMO thing from the ’status’ blog
December 5th, 2007 at 12:08 pm
Ah, and yet again my sites are down. Always down. Every day guaranteed downtime.
December 5th, 2007 at 12:18 pm
How do we check the panel if the panel is down?
December 5th, 2007 at 12:51 pm
YOUR FUCKIN BALLS, PABLO!
December 5th, 2007 at 1:15 pm
Your website is up. And even if it wasn’t, it would have nothing to do with a promo code post.
That panel isn’t down.
December 5th, 2007 at 4:25 pm
So let me make sure I’m understanding this. If you use a promo code where the current value is $97 off the price, it will become $50 off the price. This makes sense, however, if I refer someone to Dreamhost, and they sign up, my reward would still be $97 or would it be $47? And I’m wondering how this effects referers who choose to do one time cash payouts for each referal?
December 5th, 2007 at 7:16 pm
Ok I have to ask and I know its off topic but who the heck is Pablo?
December 5th, 2007 at 7:26 pm
p2pdude - The VALUE of the referral is $97. If you give someone $50 of it - the new max discount - $47 will be credited to you unless you have another option selected. You can also choose to buy more bandwidth or storage, an IP address or extra domain registrations out of that $47 for your friend. Those upgrades will come out of your portion of the credit.
December 5th, 2007 at 7:26 pm
I suspect that it might be a way to stop people from signing up with new names and cards and domains every year for $22.40
December 5th, 2007 at 8:55 pm
Oh,the new customers will be very sad….
December 5th, 2007 at 9:40 pm
The referrals dont even convert well in the first case, i’ve had around 700 unique clicks on dreamhost links and not 1 single conversion!! Now i’m not holding out on making any referral money ever!
December 5th, 2007 at 10:35 pm
@Mike
…hate to say it but the panel IS down. I even had someone off my network check.
December 5th, 2007 at 10:39 pm
panel is down for me too :/
December 5th, 2007 at 10:47 pm
yuppers, panel down
December 5th, 2007 at 11:03 pm
I Confirm that.
December 5th, 2007 at 11:18 pm
Yup. Panel down.
December 5th, 2007 at 11:39 pm
Cool - it just came back!
December 5th, 2007 at 11:40 pm
My post was quite some time ago–and it wasn’t down at the time. Works fine now, but there was a little weirdness a little while ago on the last bellsouth & global hops from here:
13 1573 ms 511 ms 817 ms 65.83.239.222
14 103 ms 86 ms 240 ms 64.209.105.26
15 101 ms 87 ms 86 ms panel.dreamhost.com [208.97.187.201]
Plus, even then, you could get to it with Lynx from the shell.
December 5th, 2007 at 11:47 pm
OH GOSH - and it’s back down. I’ll stop posting “Working / not working anymore” messages. Guess all you readers imagine it pretty well yourself.
December 5th, 2007 at 11:49 pm
Still/again down for me…
December 5th, 2007 at 11:51 pm
no, wait, it’s back!
December 6th, 2007 at 6:26 pm
I’m thinking there might be some new sweet discount coupon in the new year.
December 12th, 2007 at 8:24 am
I’m thinking you’re a gimp.
One of us is wrong…
December 14th, 2007 at 12:18 am
hmmm.. i really like to give the whole referral fee out as discount… but what’s the reason for the change in the discount policy? because in the end, dreamhost still have to give out $97 for the referral…
December 15th, 2007 at 1:28 pm
