My website is down
December 27th, 2007 at 3:19 pm
This is “medium”? I can’t log into the shell, can’t use SVN, and my website is down. What does it take to reach “serious” — the servers have dispatched hitmen to kill the customers?
December 27th, 2007 at 3:19 pm
Most everyone’s site is down do to the server problem… Hopefully it will up relatively soon.
December 27th, 2007 at 3:22 pm
I can ssh to zelda, but my home directory appears to be missing. I hope the data isn’t permanently lost…
December 27th, 2007 at 3:26 pm
Keywords: Clodsburgers!
December 27th, 2007 at 3:27 pm
So if the primary file server is down, shouldn’t it be failing over to the secondary server?
Is there redundancy here? Should it be auto-failing over?
December 27th, 2007 at 3:29 pm
please re-up the network asap. i am running several paid ad campaigns and now my site is down! bummer! i hope you’ll be able to resolve the issues quickly, and permanently
December 27th, 2007 at 3:31 pm
Mine is working, NEENUR!
December 27th, 2007 at 3:33 pm
I noticed problems with my sites hosted on zelda about a hour ago and suspected something was up, especially when zelda.dreamhost.com itself wasn’t reachable. I hope you guys get it fixed soon.
December 27th, 2007 at 3:36 pm
Please hurry! I don’t have anything else to do tonight!
December 27th, 2007 at 3:41 pm
Dreamhost, this is ridiculous. A new client just signed up with you guys after I recommended you guys (for some unknown reason) to them. A site being down for 40+ minutes is unheard of!
Unfortunately, folks, this is not the first, or the second or even the third time I’ve experienced this. This is what we get for ultra-inexpensive hosting.
I like dreamhost, too: the OS, the features, disk space, DBs, the panel even. It is irritating that they have problems like these that to me it seems like they should never have. I guess there is no guarantee anywhere for 99.9% uptime …
December 27th, 2007 at 3:45 pm
I too recommended AND installed a brand new site yesterday and now this. I’d like to have some answers on the fail over strategies, and down time stats for this hosting.
December 27th, 2007 at 3:45 pm
Obviously this isn’t by choice of dreamhost but you’ve got to be kidding me - the first working day after the holidays?! My mail is down!!
December 27th, 2007 at 3:50 pm
I too wonder why a problem that takes down two dozen servers is given a severity of only medium rather than high. Does DreamHost plan adopt a policy for failover to backup servers in order to minimize downtimes? Especially, for servers that support many web sites such as the blingy file server?
December 27th, 2007 at 3:50 pm
At least dreamhost are incredibly detailed in error analysis:
“is currently having some problems and is causing problems”
December 27th, 2007 at 3:51 pm
You guys should realize that you get what you pay for. DreamHost is a budget host and you should expect some downtime here and there. If your earning a ton of money with a site and lose cash every minute your down then shouldn’t you have the money for better hosting? Shared hosting was never intended to run sites that need 99.9% uptime. If you’re running a profitable site then spend some of that money and get something better. Me I can live with a couple hours of downtime a month, its what I expect for $11 a month.
December 27th, 2007 at 3:54 pm
I aggree with Bookworm, I wasn’t expecting anything near perfection
December 27th, 2007 at 4:02 pm
GET IT BACK UP!!! There is no decent explanation and no ETA, I need this back I need access to files like an hour ago and I have yet to hear back from staff!!!

This is pretty ridiculous. Obviously, this is a low-COST host, but having an outage of this length is unacceptable. S**t happens, but shouldn’t there be a redundancy that kicks in to avoid this type of thing? Particularly when people run their businesses through these sites, it’s particularly frustrating.
December 27th, 2007 at 4:14 pm
this is ridiculous. i signed up with dreamhost only two days ago, and now my site has gone down for the third time in a row in 48 hours!
seems like even free hosting provider like 110mb.com achieves better uptime guaranty than paid hosts. grab a domain name for about $10, get mysql activated from 110mb for another $10-12, and you’re set for life.
ohhh… just this moment my domain name came back. but there is no homepage or any data yet. i hope my stuffs didn’t get lost!
December 27th, 2007 at 4:17 pm
Regardless of the price and features I would expect the servers to be up. As a new customer having just launched my site… it’s only up for less than a day and now the server is down. So much for registering users in a timely manner.
I think once the problem is determined that an ETA and detailed explanation would be nice…
December 27th, 2007 at 4:21 pm
Oh one last thing. I would hope that all data has been backed up. Would hate to think would the ramifications would be for loss of site data, MySQL entries or beyond.
December 27th, 2007 at 4:25 pm
That would be indeed a bitch…
I was just working on a site.
And didnt backed it up yet.
I was working on it…
If the data would be lost.
That would just be to stupid to be true.
Im also new to dreamhost and i
hope that that is just a stupid comment
of yours and not one comment knowing
dreamhost sucks because u know
this happends 3 times a week…
Please dreamhost Treat your
ppl better then this :’|
December 27th, 2007 at 4:27 pm
I doubt any data is lost. The stuff might go down, but DH is not a bunch of idiots.
I’m sure they’re trying to fix it as we speak, and I’m sure they’ll try and prevent it from happening in the future. It’s in their interest too.
Cheers.
December 27th, 2007 at 4:30 pm
I have confidence in Dreamhost and trust they will get this resolved. Knowing that they have customers in many state of site desing and construction, I would hope they perform a rotating backup of all servers at the very least every 24 hours. If not, there would really be no excuse for such in this day and age. Again, just sitting back and giving them the benefit of the doubt to do their work. As with most outages like this they are unexpected. But again, having planned DR sites you pretty much know when your hardware is acting up through active monitoring.
December 27th, 2007 at 4:30 pm
We are all in the same boat here. I just sent out PR too.
And we might just hold a group desire to see see this up and running ASAP,
with no hard feelings toward those who are working on our behalf.
That is more likely to help than all this bitching.
December 27th, 2007 at 4:35 pm
This is medium severity, are you busing my chops here? New customer as well, 1 week. This is almost laughable.
More of an update would be helpful.
December 27th, 2007 at 4:44 pm
I am beginning to think we are all new customers. I left godaddy after the same thing happened 2 weeks ago and they lost all data. My developer moved the site here and started off from his three day old back up. Now this! What gives?
December 27th, 2007 at 4:44 pm
This is a joke… I
I just have signed this service because my web site was hosted in other host that is not reliable… and now I am facing the same problems…
December 27th, 2007 at 4:49 pm
I wish there was some information on ETA or the type of problem so I can move my hosting temporarily. Is it going to take a few days or a few hours?
December 27th, 2007 at 4:49 pm
Oh boy. While I do agree that “Medium” is an understatement of the severity level, I do understand that these things happen. As soon as things get sorted out, can you please post something else here (at the very least so we don’t think giant hamsters have invaded the datacenter and taken out blingy)?
December 27th, 2007 at 4:51 pm
I had a meeting with a potential client today, and I was trying to show them my portfolio!!
How did this happen and what is being done to make sure this doesn’t happen again. Not Happy.
December 27th, 2007 at 4:54 pm
Yes I too would like to know and ETA. How long do problems like this take th get resolved in the past?
December 27th, 2007 at 4:54 pm
I wonder if they take classes on dealing with whining? This really sucks and I am disappointed but my site has barely begun a true launch. Although I was planning the google adwords campaign to start tomorrow. So glad I didn’t.
December 27th, 2007 at 4:57 pm
oh! boy
hope it’ll be resolved within the next 7 hours
our group wiki is down and we have a meeting tomorrow
PS:- if this is the medium risk, i can’t imagine the high risk
December 27th, 2007 at 5:00 pm
PS … I am a new customer as well … still in my 90 day money back guarantee stage. Maybe all the new customers are on the newest server, which is having the trouble … if this happens again within the 90 days I’m searching for a new host.
December 27th, 2007 at 5:01 pm
I’m glad I have a mirror for this kind of situation. You can’t rely much on a cheap host like this…..
December 27th, 2007 at 5:01 pm
I just purchase a 1-year plan I start configuring my new website and after 20 minutes uploading drupal and starting to configure it, this problem.
Bad luck for me!
December 27th, 2007 at 5:02 pm
Is it hard to set up a mirror site? What does that involve?
December 27th, 2007 at 5:03 pm
what is it going on, i am waiting for 3 hours to upload my site!
i have just advertisedmy new site in 10 forums, that are crucial for me!!!
and now that!?!?!?
i was going to start telling people to move in dreamhost, but what to say now???
i do not know if i should find another host.. but i just paid you 2 days ago…!!!
December 27th, 2007 at 5:05 pm
i’m on zelda and mine is down. that blows
December 27th, 2007 at 5:06 pm
after this
i’ll makesure i have a mirror
December 27th, 2007 at 5:08 pm
I’m on tails and I just find it hilarious now that i can see all the servers that they are all named after video games. guess my site will be down for a few hours tonight. i payed 9.95 for the entire year so I’m in no place to complain.
December 27th, 2007 at 5:16 pm
As of last week I’m a customer, having switched my domain over and purchased DreamHost service. Less than one week into it I’ve been without my email, FTP, and Web services for almost 4 hours. Definitely not how I envisioned this relationship beginning…
December 27th, 2007 at 5:19 pm
QA You say u got a years serv for 9.95- How’d you pull that off? I paid 165.
December 27th, 2007 at 5:21 pm
I am getting the following error when I try to go to my site. Do I need to do something to fix this or is everybody else getting the same error?

December 27th, 2007 at 5:25 pm
My second day on dreamhost and my site is down.Great start!!!
December 27th, 2007 at 5:27 pm
you’re not alone mate. this is my 2nd day too. and my third downtime… in 48 hrs.
