blingy issues
Posted (December 27th, 2007 at 2:51 pm PST) by kitchenThe primary file server on the ‘blingy’ cluster is currently having some problems and is causing problems with all of the blingy cluster. We are working on it and should have an update shortly.
We apologize for the inconvenience.

This is “medium”? I can’t log into the shell, can’t use SVN, and my website is down. What does it take to reach “serious” — the servers have dispatched hitmen to kill the customers?
Most everyone’s site is down do to the server problem… Hopefully it will up relatively soon.
I can ssh to zelda, but my home directory appears to be missing. I hope the data isn’t permanently lost…
Keywords: Clodsburgers!
So if the primary file server is down, shouldn’t it be failing over to the secondary server?
Is there redundancy here? Should it be auto-failing over?
please re-up the network asap. i am running several paid ad campaigns and now my site is down! bummer! i hope you’ll be able to resolve the issues quickly, and permanently
Mine is working, NEENUR!
I noticed problems with my sites hosted on zelda about a hour ago and suspected something was up, especially when zelda.dreamhost.com itself wasn’t reachable. I hope you guys get it fixed soon.
Please hurry! I don’t have anything else to do tonight!
Dreamhost, this is ridiculous. A new client just signed up with you guys after I recommended you guys (for some unknown reason) to them. A site being down for 40+ minutes is unheard of!
Unfortunately, folks, this is not the first, or the second or even the third time I’ve experienced this. This is what we get for ultra-inexpensive hosting.
I like dreamhost, too: the OS, the features, disk space, DBs, the panel even. It is irritating that they have problems like these that to me it seems like they should never have. I guess there is no guarantee anywhere for 99.9% uptime …
I too recommended AND installed a brand new site yesterday and now this. I’d like to have some answers on the fail over strategies, and down time stats for this hosting.
Obviously this isn’t by choice of dreamhost but you’ve got to be kidding me - the first working day after the holidays?! My mail is down!!
I too wonder why a problem that takes down two dozen servers is given a severity of only medium rather than high. Does DreamHost plan adopt a policy for failover to backup servers in order to minimize downtimes? Especially, for servers that support many web sites such as the blingy file server?
At least dreamhost are incredibly detailed in error analysis:
“is currently having some problems and is causing problems”
You guys should realize that you get what you pay for. DreamHost is a budget host and you should expect some downtime here and there. If your earning a ton of money with a site and lose cash every minute your down then shouldn’t you have the money for better hosting? Shared hosting was never intended to run sites that need 99.9% uptime. If you’re running a profitable site then spend some of that money and get something better. Me I can live with a couple hours of downtime a month, its what I expect for $11 a month.
I aggree with Bookworm, I wasn’t expecting anything near perfection
GET IT BACK UP!!! There is no decent explanation and no ETA, I need this back I need access to files like an hour ago and I have yet to hear back from staff!!!

This is pretty ridiculous. Obviously, this is a low-COST host, but having an outage of this length is unacceptable. S**t happens, but shouldn’t there be a redundancy that kicks in to avoid this type of thing? Particularly when people run their businesses through these sites, it’s particularly frustrating.
this is ridiculous. i signed up with dreamhost only two days ago, and now my site has gone down for the third time in a row in 48 hours!
seems like even free hosting provider like 110mb.com achieves better uptime guaranty than paid hosts. grab a domain name for about $10, get mysql activated from 110mb for another $10-12, and you’re set for life.
ohhh… just this moment my domain name came back. but there is no homepage or any data yet. i hope my stuffs didn’t get lost!
Regardless of the price and features I would expect the servers to be up. As a new customer having just launched my site… it’s only up for less than a day and now the server is down. So much for registering users in a timely manner.
I think once the problem is determined that an ETA and detailed explanation would be nice…
Oh one last thing. I would hope that all data has been backed up. Would hate to think would the ramifications would be for loss of site data, MySQL entries or beyond.
That would be indeed a bitch…
I was just working on a site.
And didnt backed it up yet.
I was working on it…
If the data would be lost.
That would just be to stupid to be true.
Im also new to dreamhost and i
hope that that is just a stupid comment
of yours and not one comment knowing
dreamhost sucks because u know
this happends 3 times a week…
Please dreamhost Treat your
ppl better then this :’|
I doubt any data is lost. The stuff might go down, but DH is not a bunch of idiots.
I’m sure they’re trying to fix it as we speak, and I’m sure they’ll try and prevent it from happening in the future. It’s in their interest too.
Cheers.
I have confidence in Dreamhost and trust they will get this resolved. Knowing that they have customers in many state of site desing and construction, I would hope they perform a rotating backup of all servers at the very least every 24 hours. If not, there would really be no excuse for such in this day and age. Again, just sitting back and giving them the benefit of the doubt to do their work. As with most outages like this they are unexpected. But again, having planned DR sites you pretty much know when your hardware is acting up through active monitoring.
We are all in the same boat here. I just sent out PR too.
And we might just hold a group desire to see see this up and running ASAP,
with no hard feelings toward those who are working on our behalf.
That is more likely to help than all this bitching.
This is medium severity, are you busing my chops here? New customer as well, 1 week. This is almost laughable.
More of an update would be helpful.
I am beginning to think we are all new customers. I left godaddy after the same thing happened 2 weeks ago and they lost all data. My developer moved the site here and started off from his three day old back up. Now this! What gives?
This is a joke… I
I just have signed this service because my web site was hosted in other host that is not reliable… and now I am facing the same problems…
I wish there was some information on ETA or the type of problem so I can move my hosting temporarily. Is it going to take a few days or a few hours?
Oh boy. While I do agree that “Medium” is an understatement of the severity level, I do understand that these things happen. As soon as things get sorted out, can you please post something else here (at the very least so we don’t think giant hamsters have invaded the datacenter and taken out blingy)?
I had a meeting with a potential client today, and I was trying to show them my portfolio!!
How did this happen and what is being done to make sure this doesn’t happen again. Not Happy.
Yes I too would like to know and ETA. How long do problems like this take th get resolved in the past?
I wonder if they take classes on dealing with whining? This really sucks and I am disappointed but my site has barely begun a true launch. Although I was planning the google adwords campaign to start tomorrow. So glad I didn’t.
oh! boy
hope it’ll be resolved within the next 7 hours
our group wiki is down and we have a meeting tomorrow
PS:- if this is the medium risk, i can’t imagine the high risk
PS … I am a new customer as well … still in my 90 day money back guarantee stage. Maybe all the new customers are on the newest server, which is having the trouble … if this happens again within the 90 days I’m searching for a new host.
I’m glad I have a mirror for this kind of situation. You can’t rely much on a cheap host like this…..
I just purchase a 1-year plan I start configuring my new website and after 20 minutes uploading drupal and starting to configure it, this problem.
Bad luck for me!
Is it hard to set up a mirror site? What does that involve?
what is it going on, i am waiting for 3 hours to upload my site!
i have just advertisedmy new site in 10 forums, that are crucial for me!!!
and now that!?!?!?
i was going to start telling people to move in dreamhost, but what to say now???
i do not know if i should find another host.. but i just paid you 2 days ago…!!!
i’m on zelda and mine is down. that blows
after this
i’ll makesure i have a mirror
I’m on tails and I just find it hilarious now that i can see all the servers that they are all named after video games. guess my site will be down for a few hours tonight. i payed 9.95 for the entire year so I’m in no place to complain.
As of last week I’m a customer, having switched my domain over and purchased DreamHost service. Less than one week into it I’ve been without my email, FTP, and Web services for almost 4 hours. Definitely not how I envisioned this relationship beginning…
QA You say u got a years serv for 9.95- How’d you pull that off? I paid 165.
I am getting the following error when I try to go to my site. Do I need to do something to fix this or is everybody else getting the same error?
—————————————————————
Forbidden
You don’t have permission to access / on this server.
Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Well, I am getting this error:
Site Temporarily Unavailable
We apologize for the inconvenience. Please contact the webmaster/ tech support immediately to have them rectify this.
error id: “bad_httpd_conf”
I hope they keep backups.
My second day on dreamhost and my site is down.Great start!!!
you’re not alone mate. this is my 2nd day too. and my third downtime… in 48 hrs.
Site Temporarily Unavailable
We apologize for the inconvenience. Please contact the webmaster/ tech support immediately to have them rectify this.
error id: “bad_httpd_conf”
Is the error I’m getting. This likely means the fileserver hasn’t been fixed yet . They simply pointed the server’s to another one. Right at this moment they’re probably trying to get the data back from blingy and put it on a new fileserver. DH better have backed up everyones data.
FYI, I’m in the chat at chat.dreamhost.com I’ll be in there until DH resolves this issue.
terror alert level: yellow
also a new customer, two weeks hosted on subzero. also getting this error:
Site Temporarily Unavailable
We apologize for the inconvenience. Please contact the webmaster/ tech support immediately to have them rectify this.
error id: “bad_httpd_conf”
I’m waiting on my private server to be set up, hopefully thatll prevent most of these downtimes!
I recently switched from Yahoo! because their servers were running like a TRS-80. I have enjoyed the speed and responsiveness of the Dreamhost stuff, but now the server is down about 3 hours! Ouch…
Mario server totally offline for 3 hours….
Yeah this is pretty ridiculous. I just switched to dreamhost the other day I hope this doesn’t happen all the time otherwise I seriously will be switching after the next one of these

Are people not having problems anymore? I just tried to access my site, and the homepage is visible, but all others are giving me a 404 error. On my other website I’ve got the “bad_httpd_conf”
oh, this is pacific time
Martin - You’re probably viewing a cached version of the page. I’m still having problems.
My site is down at least 2 hours ago
I hope you resolve this issue as soon as possible
My sites are back online. The problem seems solved ![]()
How about others?
Back online for me, no data lost here.
I’m a happy customer.
my site is back up too…
Scorpion is still down!
not mine
Mine’s not up yet.
I didn’t check this site before changing my FTP passwords, because I thought someone hacked my FTP (my website is just a directory) — will they change?
Popinski (the server hosting my site) is up, but I still can’t access the site.
Looks like glassjoe is back up.
It’s working now!
User’s on popinski issued a collective “yea!”
FYI - My site is back up…it’s hosted on ‘tails’.
by-the-by, anyone know what their refund policy is related to excessive downtime?
Looks like spyro is backup! While it was all down, the MySQL databases could still be accessed, guess because they were on a different server.
subzero is back up too.
blingy and jax are back online for me. What happens with the e-mail sent to Dreamhosted accounts? Are they lost or simply stored until the server is available again?
FiXED THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There shall come a server named Smoogle, and it shall rule the world with an iron fist! FOR SMOOGLE IS THE PROTECTOR OF THE LIGHT! SMOOGLE SHALL CONQUEROR BLINGY IN A DEATHMATCH OF BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS! SMOOGLE SHALL MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE FOR PINK BUNNY RABBITS! SMOOGLE SHALL CHALLENGE GOD AND WIN!
ALL HAIL SMOOGLE!
website back up- still no mail
Back up as for web service. Thanks Guys!!!!
Up for me! Sweet
Fuck!! My website is down again today……….afzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Christ, those who are complaining about 40 minutes downtime… I’m sorry, but try having a four year old website lost by a host, who claimed to make backups every 24 hours.
Look up “Fuitadnet” if you’d like to know who I’m on about.
And Dreamhost, thanks for the fact you have a blog, keeping us updated on situations when they arise. It’s greatly appreciated. =)
Having the same problem with my home directory on postac. My home directory doesn’t exist, and the status page says my disk usage is 0%!? Looks like this issue may not be completely resolved yet? (Or maybe it’s migrated to a different cluster)
Jojo,
Nice to see another Fuitadnet refugee here! I ditched them after the box I was on was compromised. Their cleanup was inefficient, ineffective, and halfassed.
Dreamhost wins out by far, on all accounts.
Somehow, all my databases have been completely cleared (and the backups have vanished along with them)! I’ve been waiting for a response from support for over 24 hours now! What is going on?
Well, I was with dreamhost but switched within the money back time. The only one good thing with the host was the long money back time.
I had 3 days of downtime and problems in my first week. I stayed with it another month just to see it getting worse and worse and for 15 something bucks a month ( codemonster plan) I was not really pleased. I switched paying less then here for more of everything and had 15 minutes downtime in the 3 months I was with them… oh yeah the downtime was a scheduled maintenance. Right now I am recovering the sites of several of my friends hosted here and moving them to new hosts for them as well. Dreamhost has lost my trust and the trust of quite a few people a while ago.
I don’t even expect 99.9 percent uptime. Servers are machines and those can and tend to fail but what is happening here is just a little too much of failing hardware and unexplained problems!
Now if I could only access the site I am trying to recover because it is… guess what… down!
My site has been up and down, mostly down for the past month. Finally got dreamhost to move me to another server, I went from Tropicana to Fiji, but I’m still having problems. Last open support ticket was 1 day and 4 hours ago. No responses since then.
Thanks
Thanks
Did any whinners ever hear of backing up ones own critical data
Thank You
