DreamHost Webpanel database troubles
One of our central database servers is having some software trouble currently. Our webpanel as well as webmail is down as a result. We should have it back online shortly.

Thanks!

Best of luck with the repair - first bit of SQL downtime I’ve experienced in a while.
Lucky doing some non-database dependant site dev right now, so I can carry right on working!
January 14th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
Good luck!!
January 14th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
yeah one of my databases has been down for over 10 hours and no response for support. Second time in a week!
January 14th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
Might as well through a database server upgrade in while you’re doing it.
Thanks for letting us know what was up. So soon after the LAX is having issues, I was wondering.
January 14th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
I know, right, firdt crash in like 3-4 months for me…reminds me of the good ol’ days….wait, those days weren’t good!
Please fix.

January 14th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Come on DH. We’ve so much faith in you! You can do it. If you don’t we won’t be able to. Hurry up!
January 14th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Hopefully it’ll be back up soon…prospective new staff member waiting on me to set up her email address…
January 14th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
AAARRRGGG!!!
January 14th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
Tell you what, add a link to this status blog on the holding-message on the panel, I had to find this by searching through all kinds of things!
January 14th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
dreamhost????
or nightmare
January 14th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
Strangely, this is the first time my WP site is working fast on my end. Lol.
January 14th, 2008 at 2:12 pm
Hurry!! I have a job deadline and my info is in there!
January 14th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
I wouldn’t say that webmail being down is of Medium severity, I’d say it’s pretty freaking critical.
This it the latest in a string of “up, down, up, slow, down, IMAP went away, up, slow, down”.
And Panel being down in the middle of the day? What’s the matter, too busy partying at night that you have to perform database maintenance in the middle of the day?
This host is more of a nightmare than a dream. yeesh.
January 14th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
Noticed the panel go down right after my database backed sites stopped responding. Here’s to hoping for a quick recovery!
January 14th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
hmmmm I wonder if I have any new email………………
January 14th, 2008 at 2:17 pm
1044: Access denied for user ’squirrelmail’@'192.168.10.0/255.255.255.0′ to database ‘dreamhost’
Sweet.

@ KumaZaTheef - “I wouldn’t say that webmail being down is of Medium severity, I’d say it’s pretty freaking critical.”
Why do you say that? Have you tried using your email via a POP3/IMAP client, or via mutt or mine in the shell? Webmail might be convenient at times, but I don’t see it as being “critical” at all.
@Ross - you can check your mail with either/all of the methods I mentioned above.
January 14th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
@rlparker - You have a good point; however, while traveling over seas sitting in an internet cafe I don’t have access to those luxuries
January 14th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
My virtual private server is also down and I can’t reboot it without the panel.
January 14th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
never even thought to check my mail on my phone… Tried and it worked. Thanks!
January 14th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
Hooray for Mutt!
January 14th, 2008 at 2:35 pm
Delightful—
It was working about 3 hours ago…
What is happening to mail being sent TO me???
January 14th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
If at my office things are going bad and horridly broken for thousands of users.. I don’t go home until they are fixed. I don’t care how many days that is, I wouldn’t go home.
Wish the entire office there had the same work ethic. Maybe it’s just because it’s cold in Boston and I don’t want to see sunlight anyway. LA it’s always nice, so maybe they want to go out any play.
January 14th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
my email is like phone. all my customers use email instead of phone call due to my deafness. please hurry up.. you should have second back up server if main server fail.
January 14th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
Mail appears to be recieved, it merely cannot be viewed with webmail. SquirrelMail has gone (heh heh) squirrely, most likely. Main CP down, but all other services normal. Wonder if it has to do with the Cubemail or whatever test recently offered to those who don’t like the squirrel app.
January 14th, 2008 at 2:40 pm
I have been with Dreamhost for about 3 years now, one of my sites has 2000+ members uploading/downloading stuff 24 hours a day. I am not saying that having issues like the one right now is good, but for the price I am paying, I cannot complain. Overall, I will stick with Dreamhost with its ups and downs, till death do us part. I am sure everything will be fixed asap.
January 14th, 2008 at 2:47 pm
Sure, figures all this goes down the one time in 6 months I decide to do site maintenance for a site that has over 3k plus members.
Hope it comes back soon, my finger is getting tired of clicking refresh on the web panel.
January 14th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
@rlparker.
would you mind explaining one of those options for those not all that technically inclined. could be a real life saver.
thanks

“Why do you say that? Have you tried using your email via a POP3/IMAP client, or via mutt or mine in the shell? Webmail might be convenient at times, but I don’t see it as being “critical” at all. ;-)”
What if you are on the road and away from your own PC? Or operating in a technology environment where installing and configuring applications is not an option? You do not have the option of setting up any of the things you suggest. For both private and commercial use, webmail being down is a disaster.
Apart from which IT IS REALLY FREAKING SIMPLE SOFTWARE. HOW CAN IT BE DOWN THIS OFTEN???
Email is something people RELY on these days. It is not a toy or a luxury.
January 14th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
come on…come on…
not now
thanks god it’s really late at night here and no one wants to use webmail

Another thing about reading your mails,
go to http://www.mail2web.com/
January 14th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
Thanks for working so hard guys… Quite painless for me
January 14th, 2008 at 3:03 pm
I used to think email was reliable. Then I lost all my wits and had no time to breath or even enjoy what I reap from such a dependance on technology.
January 14th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
I’ve put up with this crap for too long. I know people say for the price expect downtime… I say that is complacent. If I pay money for a service, I expect that service to work. Slow servers, terribly slow network, intermittent email. I’m done with these clowns.
January 14th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
This is the first problem I have encountered in over a year, when I switched over from a horror host, so I’ll say you guys have done well, and hope you take care of this asap.
*Edit to add: My control panel came up while I was completing this message*
January 14th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Nice one ! seems to be working again now!
January 14th, 2008 at 3:12 pm
See ya Paul!
January 14th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
zarg something isn’t working for vie minutes, im going to post here and say how mad I am then change my account to another hoster cuz DREAMHOST IS THE ONLY HOSTER THAT EVER HAS ISSUES EVER AND YOU ALL SUCK AND I WISH I COULD DIE
thanks DH, you’ve always been good to me, and better than the last two hosters I had by a long shot (and cheaper too!)
January 14th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
@ notallthattechie - “would you mind explaining one of those options for those not all that technically inclined. could be a real life saver.”
I’d be happy to, but I don’t think the blog comments is the appropriate place for that . However, if you pop on over to the DreamHost discussion forums (http://discussion.dreamhost.com) and ask such a question, I’ll respond as best I can!
@Patrick Bateman - “What if you are on the road and away from your own PC? Or operating in a technology environment where installing and configuring applications is not an option? You do not have the option of setting up any of the things you suggest. For both private and commercial use, webmail being down is a disaster.”
It is a valid point that if you are “on the road” , or are in an envir0onment where you do not have access to standard internet tools, and are unable to use even a portable app, that you may become entirely dependent upon webmail. *THAT*, however, is *your* fault/problem, and not your webhost’s problem.
“For both private and commercial use”, complete reliance on webmail “is a disaster”, and you should take steps to prevent that from happening!

The web panel is completely down!!! I can’t do any dev work today. Please fix as soon as possible. Very important.
January 15th, 2008 at 7:03 am
17 hours later, web panel is down.
January 15th, 2008 at 7:06 am
Is the current outage a continuation of this problem or a new one? Either way “Resolved: Yes” seems inaccurate.
January 15th, 2008 at 7:07 am
Having the web panel down today is a critical problem for my law firm. I’m a big defender of DreamHost in a time when critics abound, but this outage comes at an amazingly bad time. I cannot begin to calculate the cost and for the first time ever, I am seriously considering my alternatives to DreamHost.
January 15th, 2008 at 7:17 am
The Panel is still down.
How do we report problems when the panel is down???
Bb
January 15th, 2008 at 7:18 am
WebPanel is still down @ 10:15 am EST .. what gives?
January 15th, 2008 at 7:48 am
This problem is NOT FIXED! What the hell Dreamhost!
Oh yeah - can’t report the problem, because the FUCKING WEBPANEL IS DOWN TOO!
Call them - do a whois on newdream.net and you will find their phone number is 213-947-1032.
Let the incoming phone barrage begin.
January 15th, 2008 at 8:17 am
Agreed with the last few comments, your bloody webpanel is down. You guys sure run a legit business… idiots.
January 15th, 2008 at 8:29 am
What do you mean by stating “resolved” ?????????
what the……..?????
what exactly is resolved?
