Quick network upgrade

We need to perform a quick network upgrade right now to alleviate a saturating port between two of our datacenters and the internet. The outage should be intermittent, and only last around 1-2 minutes. Afterwards, DreamHost should be running faster, and with less packet loss!

Edit: This turned out to be a false alarm. The network upgrades didn’t cause any noticeable outages. Other outages you may have experienced during this time were a coincidence.

I’ve played the “I’m pissed off and moving my sites elsewhere” game before. After moving my sites four times due to downtime, broken promises etc., I’ve decided to stay with DH. Why? Well, because moving everything around and getting back up and running is a pain in the a$$! Something that continues to amaze me is people who continue to bitch about how this downtime is unacceptable and how much business ($$$) they are losing. Granted, excessive downtime IS unacceptable. DreamHost is great, generally speaking, but why are you running your multi-million dollar business on a $10 mo. host? Do you have a back contingency plan in place? How about redundancy? If your site is THAT important, then using a $10 mo. host as a sole source is plain cheap and stupid.

To those who want to jump ship, it’s your right to do so. Lots of luck getting support from “Paul” across the pond who you can’t understand.

some of us are paying $140 a month and still my database server has been down for 12+ hours with no email from support. I am sorry 12 hours is way to long and unacceptable, up to 4 hours max and there better be a good reason why it took even that long. 12 hours just means DH does not know what they are doing, and I am also leaving as soon as I can get the data of my DB server, I am going to try eapps.com that have live phone support and live chat and a Service level agreement which is 4hours not 24hours to fix issues.

    Mac Says:

Drew, you’re right. 12+ hours with no notification/response is not acceptable. I would expect that you would pay more with that type of SLA. (Service Level Agreement). But hey if your site is business critical, then it is worth it. Sounds like you are not part of the $10 mo. whineys I spoke of earlier. Good luck.

So everyone pretends like they are going to move to a new host every time there is a second of downtime? You people are ridiculous, Under here is a page of whining. They are really pretty reliable and very economical. Inconvenient timing however.

DreamHost–you need to post more accurate estimates on your downtime.

LOL! i think, when u pay what ever, even $1 for host, u spect to have what you payed for. waht DH promises.

my main site gaizkasoft.com is already outside DH and i am moving all my other sites out already.

hopefully dh will stop thinking only about profit profit and start thinking about clients.

drew - Wow. $140/month, ay? Is that for a single dedicated host machine? Do you get your own technician who knows you personally and can let you know, by email or by phone, when there’s any kind of problem with your machine and rented bandwidth?

The company I work for pays a lot more per month for dedicated hosting - and we host our own email servers and have our own programmer for the “backend” to the online database and our own MIS guy who responds to email problems. I’m talking just web services and basic html authoring is costing us more than $140/month - but then, we have very little downtime, and most of it is a result of internal problems not with the web service.

Me personally? DH’s $10/month for one shared host of two or three domains…. meh. Works most of the time, which is worth it to me as 100% uptime is not “mission critical” for hobbies and personal correspondence. I’ve been with DH since I can remember, and I don’t keep score - I just know that cool stuff works on their servers, I have many options for all the services the machine offers, and problems are usually resolved within a day - at most two.

I don’t think I’d use DH for a business site, tho. Actually, I’m sure of it. Even with the private servers offered you’re still sharing DH’s human resources (technician’s time) with all the other DH customers. If I were to look for a host for a business, I’d look at their SLA very carefully, and if it’s less than $500/mo I’d be suspicious of any claims that there’d be no downtime (or even that I’d get a personal email from them if there was).

    dotnetfreak Says:

I agree with Mac, it is annoying how the people cries about downtime for a 10 USD monthly plan. Come on what do you expect for that money? I mean, its no excuse for downtime, but I think that dreamhost puts all the efforts to notify us with this blog giving detailed explanations about what is happening. Not every hosting provider does that.

For email, I just get all my email through google apps (http://www.google.com/a/ not email forwarding) that works like a charm because email is always critical. About websites, if you have websites that require 100% uptime, you should go dedicated elsewhere.

For now, Im sticking with dreamhost, damn cheap and good hosting

    lazlo Says:

DH is not about the hardware, it’s about their responsiveness and humor. Their help files are useful to a great degee–I think the only host that runs a wiki as a wiki. Have you seen GoDaddy’s help? Have you tried to navigate through GoDaddy’s “panel”? I used to be at (MT), and they suck in terms of downtime as much as DH, but the folks at (MT) think they are too hip and cool for you. And at least DH lets you connect to their DB with a remote app! Sheesh.

Making noise here is lame, Still going off in the other blog I can understand, only if your still so upset as to do so. Doing it here is not helping anyone, including yourself, its just lame.

Honestly if you wanted to voice something and havnt been heard by now, with exactly the message you felt needed to be displayed then you need to take a writting class with the free time you have now. Dont get me wrong I was pissed and am still miffed my banks not showing the money I’m sending it, but I’ve releaved enough of the stress, provided things dont fall apart I’ve said what I had to.
