Randy cluster move
Posted (January 26th, 2008 at 9:45 am PST) by mikehDue to continued space and power constraints in our primary data center, we will be moving the “randy” cluster to one of our newer data centers. This move will begin Friday, February 8, at 10PM PST, and is expected to last up to 8 hours, until Saturday, February 9, 6AM PST. All web servers, mail servers, file servers, and MySQL servers in the randy cluster will be unreachable during this time.
The following web servers will be off line during this move:
alexander arkanoid attila baht bam bob bomberman breakout caesar centipede contra cornelius cortes crack cruisin cssmania deblume defender digdug dinar dinero dollar donkeykong ellipsis euro fidget forint franc gage galaga gap go grant guilder happy herod ikari ike io ivan jezebel joust karnov katamari khan klax korben kroner lamlam leeloo lei limbo-randy limbo-randy2 limbo-randy3 lira lucky mark marvin morgan napoleon nexus nimitz orbital pacman paperboy patton peso pizarro pound qbert quid rhod ruble rupee rygar scagnetti schilling scipio shekel slaughter slimy tetris ugh ultima venice vex vito wasabi yen yoda zorg
If your site is on any of these servers this status post applies to you. Also, if you check the “Account Status” button on the upper right hand of the webpanel ( https://panel.dreamhost.com ) you should see your cluster under the section “Your Email Server:”. We are also sending out an email announcement about this downtime window to affected customers.
We do apologize for this inconvenience. Rest assured we will do everything possible to keep downtime to a minimum.
If you have any questions regarding the server move, please contact our support team.

ouch, 1400 to 2200 on a business day for UK users
All my sites are down! I’m losing money! The situation is intolerable! How can you operate a hosting service like this!
Oh…, wait… Can I post date this?
Re: Matthew
If your website is so important ( some could very well be ) that an afternoon of downtime is unacceptable, you have been given almost 2 full weeks to arrange to have your site hosted elsewhere during that short period. It could even be a single page that explains the temporary situation if a mirroring of your website is too complex. As webmasters these circumstances are to be _expected_ and it is our _own damned responsibility_ to be able to understand and respond accordingly.
Cheers
Which data center are these moving to. I certainly hope it’s not the LAX with all the connectivity probelms you’ve been reporting. I on IO and seems to have been working well.
Re: Matthew
PST is UTC-8, not UTC+8. So this would be 0600 UTC to 1400 UTC on a Saturday. Still during business hours, but in the morning, not in the afternoon/evening.
Are you sure colbert isn’t down as well?
Awesome. Somehow I’m always affected.
Fuck you guys. You killed my SQL last night and won’t respond to the ticket after 24 hours of critical status. Emails to support are set to bounce. Now my whole fucking domain is gone.
Are you packing up and leaving town because of the money? You couldn’t be any worse right now if you tried to be.
Creamhost, you sound too young to be using a computer anyway. Sign off and go play with Legos or your Barbie doll and leave the computers to the grown-ups.
In case anyone else is as slow as creamhost, emails to support are supposed to bounce unless you’re replying to an open ticket. Submit a ticket through the control panel like you’re supposed to. Even without panel access, there’s dreamhost.com/contact.cgi. It’s not rocket science.
Moving to new hardware, Sounds promising, thanx
When is this going to be resolved. Most of my site has been down for almost 2 days now…
MH: Try contact support rather than leaving a comment on a site that explicitly says it’s NOT a support contact, and to contact support directly, mmkay?
why my SQl is down ,,, my server not listed here in ( brisk )
I have created several support tickets and no response..my databases are on .dahliadryer ? anyone with the same problem with that server…
email server Spunky is not on list, but is down too.
@ 7, 13, & 15 - 17 :
Seriously, what are you people smoking, and why aren’t you sharing?
ok facepalm, you’re right…apparently it’s the good stuff, cause I just realized that this randy cluster move is a notice for Feb, when I thought it was now, d’oh!
regardless, in real life, right now spunky ain’t working.
Do you people really think illiteracy is cool?
What do you think this sentence means:
“This move will begin Friday, February 8, at 10PM PST”
I know calendars are extremely difficult to operate, so I’ll help you out and let you know that February 8th comes after January 27th.
Now that I have given you people that valuable piece of information, what do you really think the chances are that your problem is directly connected to something that hasn’t happened yet?
Well there does seem to be a lot of time travel going on around here this month…
Anyone else missing ALL of their files?
OMG they broke teh INTARNETS
Thank you for the early heads up. I will try to get the site (temporarily) hosted somewhere else, just in case this planned downtime (in hours that we are still getting orders) will result in a close to 24 hours downtime, like the previous time there was such a short planned outage. (not even kidding - it really happened). Therefore, I really appreciate the heads up. And I hope indeed that we will end up on stable hardware on a reliable network, with well-managed routers.
Can suggest how to go about setting up “Down for scheduled maintence” pages during this change over? Would I have to set all my DNS for all domains to an alternate host for that period? Any other solutions?
Thanks
Ray
I’m not complaining but wouldn’t it be better if you guys made a backup and then transfer it to the new data center and then just disconnect the old one and connect the new one. I’m not exactly sure how it works but this way we wont have to wait so much to see our websites back up. :S
Let’s see, that’s 91 web servers alone plus however many associated file servers and MySQL servers, that they would need to 1) have laying around empty and unused just collecting dust for years until a moment like this comes along, by which time they’d be too obsolete to fill in for contemporary ones anyway, and 2) spend an unholy amount of time transferring all that data over by which point much of that will be outdated as well. Methinks you are asking for a bit much.
One good piece of advice to everyone who is an idiot and can’t read the actual announcement- back up your files and databases just in case. Because we really don’t want to see your juvenile responses when the move is completed.

“Well there does seem to be a lot of time travel going on around here this month…”
Best response ever!
Could this get a b-b-b-b-b-bump up to the top now that the move is imminent?
just curious if anybody else actually got an EMAIL announcement of this move? I just found out now b/c I happened to check on the status page…
My site is already down even though the outage is not supposed to start for five more hours.
I got an email announcement on 29th January and my site is still up, as expected at this time.
Fix this fucking problem you fucking wankers. It doesn’t look good when I email 20 potential clients my new website and its down.
‘are you kidding me’, you wouldn’t believe how many people jump at the chance for placing blame.
when I worked at an ISP, we’d announce a mail server upgrade for a sunday morning (small operation, we picked then for least disruption), if for whatever reason the upgrade never took place, we’d still get emails saying the upgrade hosed their system. After a little troubleshooting the customer problem,we’d always find a problem on their end.
such is the life of an ISP
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE POST AN UPDATE!!!! Not knowing what is going is just as bad as the problem itself. I have customers trying to get in and they were not warned. It is because you didn’t tell us you would take the spunky cluster out too!!! The least you could do is spend 5 minuts and Please post an UPDATE.
You guys should see the screaming going on at http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/2008/02/08/randy-move-going-ahead/#comments. There is says the issue is resolved. Anyone heard anything from DH yet?
Yeah, at least, a ******* update in dreamhoststatus.com main page.
massive
randy
cluster
fcuk
DH have not touched that support blog for over seven hours. This is pathetic.
This page can not be found through ordinairy links on the DreamHostStatus.com domain.
fuck!
8 HOURS DOWN
In the future, it would be nice if you post a reminder the day of. Thank you.
I’m wondering though… if there are still some issues about loading speed, etc. Yesterday was a slow day for me, which I expected (as it was the 9th and I assumed the move would take longer than estimated), but today has also been extremely low as far as website visits/page views goes… are there lingering issues here? Anyone else experiencing that?
I mean, today and yesterday were the two lowest-traffic days out of the entire month for http://www.joyfulabode.com
my site still wont resolve ?
anyone else with problems.
Thank you
Thanks
