Web server “electra” is having a bad day! - UPDATED(2x!)-
I apologize for any inconvenience this is causing. The server “electra” is locked up and won’t even power cycle at the moment. We’ve dispatched a technician to fix it but it could take 30 minutes or so. We’ll post an update as soon as the problem is corrected.
This will effect web services if you’re domains are hosted on this server, but e-mail and database services will be unaffected.
The DreamHost-We’re-Fixing-it-now Team.
UPDATE 1/31/2008 10:32 PDT: It’s back up again! Yeah! Sorry about that.
Update 2/8/2008 5:!7AM Pacific: Looks like it was getting hammered with a denial of service attack this morning. I have hopefully disabled the domain which was the target of the attack, but only time will tell. The apache service has a new IP assigned to it, and DNS is updating globally.

Severity: Low
Are u crazy????
This is very very HIGH !!!
I lost money when my sites are DOWN .. :S:S:S
January 31st, 2008 at 10:09 am
Its not the first time! do somthing!!!
January 31st, 2008 at 10:12 am
@Rafael - “Severity” has nothing to do with the urgency or priority of the problem. It has to do with how many servers are affected. One server out of a couple of thousand is not severe, from the standpoint of the entire network.
Anything DH posts on the status page is a “high” priority or urgency - there are perhaps hundreds of problems each day that don’t reach this urgency.
And really - how much money are you going to lose? If you’re making more than a few dollars with your sites, why are you hosting with a low-rent service?
January 31st, 2008 at 10:12 am
ugh.
Low severity?
All my sites are on electra, and all have been down since about 10am eastern time.
No revenue, loss of traffic. . .. .low severity?
Maybe low for dreamhost, but high for me.

The price is not a question. We pay for one service!

Make your work, and i make MY Work
Keep Out -

Electra is ON - Thanks DH
January 31st, 2008 at 10:40 am
I don’t know about anyone else but I’m still having issues with Electra - shell access is INCREDIBLY slow (to the point of taking several seconds, at best, to register any characters I type ) and my websites are running pretty slow too. My websites have been running much slower lately than they did in previous months.
January 31st, 2008 at 11:14 am
John, with me is the same.
My websites are very very low!!
Its strange!
January 31st, 2008 at 12:18 pm
LMAO @ Rafael if you want DreamHost support then contact them through your panel, when you post here everything is public, so deal with it. While we’re at it, if your link is your big income earner why don’t you explain how you were making all that money with stats like these:
http://www.google.com/search?q=rbrhost.com
http://www.alexa.com/data/details/main?url=rbrhost.com
http://siteanalytics.compete.com/rbrhost.com
http://quantcast.com/rbrhost.com
Perhaps that would explain why you are on discount hosting to begin with. Even scarier is the fact that you aren’t hosting yourself.
January 31st, 2008 at 12:37 pm
These are public comments not DH support. Anyway I sure hope the website you link to here isn’t your money maker.
January 31st, 2008 at 1:31 pm
ROFFLER: I’m well aware this is not DH support, that doesn’t mean I can’t comment and see if others are experiencing the same issues. As far as my websites go, I don’t make money off any of them. I don’t try to, nor do I intend on trying to. That doesn’t mean I can’t be displeased when the server hosting them is performing poorly.

@Rafael:
You’d be surprised how much money is on my bank acct right now… If a 30 minute outage makes you lose even 0.1% of that much, you should really considering a grid or dedicated service in a high rent provider.
That 0.1% would be worth pretty much a DECADE of such top notch service. Did you really lose that much in 30 minutes?

It seems like I oversleeped this ‘bad day’.
Not bad for me at all :))))
Everything looks ok now.
January 31st, 2008 at 5:21 pm
@John - I usually specify who I’m referring to but I thought it was so excruciatingly obvious just this once that I could actually save a few keystrokes, but I guess you didn’t get a chance to read the other comments.
January 31st, 2008 at 5:36 pm
at least, this post shows who is who on electra server.
i’m gonna check your sites when my site is having a bad day, just to see if the problem is server-wide.
February 1st, 2008 at 1:53 am
If you “lose money” every time a server goes offline and are unhappy with their arbitrary severity assignment, maybe you should consider a dedicated server (not a virtual server, which is what DH’s PS is) with guaranteed uptime. As far as I know, DH does not guarantee uptime for any plan (including PS).

How is it that any time a server goes down at Dreamhost, it always contains the site of some lowlife who’s either ripping off customers by charging them huge sums to host on discount shared servers, or running hundreds of Adwords keyword-spamming blogs off one $8 per month hosting plan?
Is it that everyone, besides me, who uses Dreamhost is a scumbag? Or is it that lowlife scumbag swindlers like to bitch when they get what they paid for, because it interrupts them getting something for nothing by stealing and lying to others?
February 1st, 2008 at 11:24 am
@Doug
You’ll always have people who tend to be a bit immature when it comes to hosting sites and such. A little downtime don’t hurt anyone. You pay for what you get. This isn’t a dedicated server, nor is it anything less than that. It’s a shared server and it’ll be that way. And besides, you cannot expect it to run completely well all the time. Servers and Hard Drives, etc will wear out after a time.
Understand this principle and you’ll understand how hosting goes. If you do not understand it, then it might be wise to give up your hosting and continue on elsewhere.

hii everyone
i’m a customer for dreamhost for a year and half now
everything is goin very fine specially with the support
but at the beginning of january i decided to test files forever system , i liked the idea of selling my own PDF formatted books and work , it went fine too but the problem started with a huge delay with the customer support
i just sent them 2 support requests the first one toke nearly a week to get a reply which wasn’t really helpfull and the 2nd one was just and ordinary question with a yes or no answer from files forever support , it’s nearly 4 days now
my question was about the payment for the earnings i got from files forever which is a huge sum of money - compared to living level in egypt where i live - it’s nearly 2000 USD , and since i’m not covered with the paypal service i can’t cash it out through paypal then i have to wait for the check
here in egypt it’s very dangerous to send international checks via ordinary mail , they take the check and cash it out with a fake ID , this happened with me before when i tried to get google check with normal mail not DHL which was 1/10 of the amount in the coming check from dreamhost
so i wanted the check to be sent via courier service like DHL or Fedex , or to be sent with anyother money transfere service , westernunion or directly to my master debit card
i don’t know if there’s any international users here on the forums who are not covered with paypal service or facing the same problem
that’s the first problem i faced
the second one is about the gifts section in the billing panel
it show minus ” -### ” sign before the amount of money earned but in the total earning for january it shows as it’s added to my earnings
the billing page shows this :
Sales : Total: $###.##
Gifts :
You gave 20 files for $-###.## = i didn’t give any gifts
Total for January 2008: $####.##
- as you see there’s a minus sign before the gifts section and obviously the amount of money is added to my whole earnings which left me confused -
i don’t know what’re gifts and how it’s calculated so i hope anyone can help me explaining
sorry for my terrible english but i wish i’ve explained my point
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
i forgot to mention that i sent 2 support inquiries
the first is support ticket #2286374 , right now it’s been 6 days 1 hour since i submitted it
i fellowed it with another support ticket about the main topic , ticket #2296547 , it’s been 4 hrs now and hope to receive their answer soon
i got used to fast responses and understanding from support team , that’s why i feel mad when it toke nearly a week now and still didn’t get any reply

@Sheyenne: All I really wanted to do is call Rafael a lowlife scumbag scammer.
February 1st, 2008 at 5:18 pm
I love browsing through the Dreamhost Status pages and watching all the cry babies stamp their little feet and wave their immature fists in the air that their $9/month hosting service (thats carrying at least 10 domains off the back of it) has had a minute of downtime, and is costing them a million bucks a day in lost revenue.
I dont want these people on MY dreamhost. GTFO.
February 5th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
@Doug - Is it really necessary? It’s not like that they’ll listen to you or anyone for that matter. Best not to say anything and let them hang themselves.

February 14th, 2008 at 3:27 pm
@Alex Anderas:
It’s not a plugin, it’s a Javascript function. Its name is jsClockTimeZone and you can, if you fancy, take a look at the code directly by viewing this page’s document source
