Pre-randy cluster move setup
On Tuesday, February 5th at 10:30PM pacific time, we need to swap two volumes on two filers. These filers have both Randy and Spunky mail cluster data on them, and they need to be isolated.
This whole process should take no longer than one hour. During which time your email will queue on remote servers and be delivered when we are finished, but you will have no access to your files or websites.
–UPDATE– Mon Feb 4 11:23:25 PST 2008
Our apologies for the vague posting. To clarify, this will affect only 1% of the customers in either the Randy or Spunky clusters. Unfortunately we can’t list exactly which customers will be affected but it is extremely limited in scope.
–UPDATE– Wed Feb 6 03:15 AM PST 2008
That did not go as smoothly as we would have liked. Most servers are back online now, and service should be resumed for most people as of one hour ago. It appears that most of the peons did not give up their old mount points as easily as we usually see them. We also have never attempted this style of a move during live service. On Friday night it should not be affected nearly as much, since everything will get clean reboots immediately after we move the stuff around.

Another downtime, well… at least it’s known before it happens
February 1st, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Can ping but can’t ssh to scagnetti, websites not loading.
February 1st, 2008 at 8:22 pm
Hoobha, you are retarted. Can’t you read? This has nothing to do with today.
February 1st, 2008 at 8:29 pm
Well my site is up, but mail and ftp are down.
February 2nd, 2008 at 3:06 am
I love how they say it’ll be about an hour.. and 4.5 hours later, it still hasn’t been fixed.
February 2nd, 2008 at 4:08 am
You gave decent notice of the actual move and I informed people, couldn’t you have given the same notice here
February 2nd, 2008 at 8:19 am
Trey your an idiot. This has nothing about today going on, this is for next week you moron
February 3rd, 2008 at 4:33 am
My MySQL databases (and as a result, my websites) are down for the past 3 hours. My emails to support is being auto-replied as:
“because of the following emergency situation and the overwhelming amount of support it is causing right now, our system is unable to handle email support, and so your message is being returned to you.”
This is incredible !
Is DreamHost being shut down as a result of some financial scam ?!!
I am seriously preparing for a major move to another hosting company in the next 24 hours.
Please prove me wrong !
February 3rd, 2008 at 3:54 pm
@Longtime -
If you were a longtime dreamhoster, you’d know that you post support requests through the panel.
Feel free to go somewhere else. We’ll even hold the door open for you on the way out.

The fact that they’re still in business after a 7.5 million dollar cock-up shows that they’re not in the kind of danger you are hoping to imply. Let us know when you finish your time at the Fox School of Journalism.

unrelated to the subject, but I am so frustrated I need to vent.
DREAMHOST YOU SUCK.
the shit I have had to go through the last couple of weeks to get you to do the most simple of tasks is absolutely unbe-fucking-lievable.
I can’t wait until this nightmare is over.
February 4th, 2008 at 10:07 am
my website is been up & down like a yo yo
for over 2 weeks
but it’s more like always down than up
February 4th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
If that doesn’t accomplish anything, you could always try crying on your mommy’s shoulder.
February 4th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
Don’t you mean “When?”
February 4th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
Yeah, but I wanted to give him false hope.
February 5th, 2008 at 6:04 am
@those who say their websites have been down…
Instead of posting and complaining about what Dreamhost ‘did’ wrong.. try making sure you didn’t screw up your own site. All it takes it 1 line of code to stop a website from coming up.. and it’ll work, then not, then work, then not. when the whole thing was your fault. so stop pointing fingers and make sure your database isn’t screwed up and all your codes are in line..
Idiots who point fingers should die..
I appreciate Dreamhost letting all of us know when a server will be down. But you also must understand that things happen. I run a community online, and due to my own inexperience in the SQL part of things a while back, I had members contacting me as to why my site was down. I then realized it was my own fault and fixed the problem, I have since learned how to manage (on the most part) everything and keep calm when something doesn’t work.
February 5th, 2008 at 7:53 am
@Exp. Webmaster
Ditto, man! All it takes is one lousy line of code to screw up the website completely…. it’s been countless times my websites have all been down for hours… FOR MY FAULT and not DH’s
However there’s a lot of people who think they are perfect and if it something goes wrong it has to be DH’s fault instead of their own… talk about narrow minds hehe
February 5th, 2008 at 11:18 am
BWAHAHAHA DH staff at it again.
February 5th, 2008 at 11:21 am
btw, what does the ‘Exp.’ in ‘Exp Webmaster’ stand for - I know it can’t be expert or experienced - maybe ‘Expletive’, as in ‘Fucking Useless Webmaster’ , yeah that’s what it is for sure.
February 5th, 2008 at 11:52 am
hi, when are you going to provide one-click install of the critical WordPress 2.3.3 security fix?
February 5th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
BWAHAHAHA DH staff at it again.
Anyone that doesn’t cry like a little girl non-stop is a Dreamhost employee? That’s good to know. The company would have folded if they hired the whining retards that post here.
February 5th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
MyName, if you go to the wordpress.org site, they have step-by-step instructions for the manual upgrade, which many prefer over the one-click. The detailed instructions walk you through it, tell you what not to delete, etc… Easy.
February 5th, 2008 at 2:07 pm
PANEL IS DOWN!
February 5th, 2008 at 2:36 pm
No, it isn’t, but that was a nice guess. You had a 50/50 chance of getting it right.
February 5th, 2008 at 5:09 pm
@Frustrated - Dude, you need to vent your frustrations more productively than that to gain any benefit at all from your venting. Like taking a visit to http://fuckdreamhost.com !
February 5th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
I think he’s taking donations at that site. As I understand it, after Scientology is taken down Anonymous is going after Dreamhost.
February 5th, 2008 at 7:52 pm

@Frustrated - An Hero is the only recourse. Shoot straight soldier!

Well my sites are DOWN.
Down, down we go rolling off the hill.
February 5th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
It’s the same for me too.
February 5th, 2008 at 10:40 pm
Wowwwwwwwwwwwwww,
My PS memory just shot up to 690 Megs?
Could this have something to do with my site being down, cause I only pay for 386.
Why would it shoot up like that?
I don’t run any backend crons or anything, just scripts which I wrote on my own and I do it manually.
February 5th, 2008 at 10:57 pm
PHP just stopped working for me. Logs show “Resource temporarily unavailable: couldn’t spawn child process”.
Wait… now my site just stop responding entirely.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:00 am
How comes my sites are the first to go when something happens?
Anybody else seeing a downage on their site?
February 6th, 2008 at 12:09 am
Yeah mine is down again. Cant even ping it currently.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:17 am
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm ok F4J
For me this gets frustrating cause I have busy sites and a forum.
I’ve been with Dreamhost since like 2005 and they used to be just terrific.
I don’t know what happened but lately I’m seeing quite a bit of downtime & slow time, even on that Private Server thing.
I just hope they fix this thing once & for all, cause their a great company and I’d hate to move my sites somewhere else.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:17 am
Facepalming 30 and up.
1) Press HOME or scroll up. (You might need someone to help you with that).
2) Read the bulletin you’ve replying to. (Get your helper to read it to you).
3) Contemplate your idiocy. (Yeah. They’re laughing AT you).
February 6th, 2008 at 12:18 am
Yep, I have about 10 domains hosted on DH. Half of them are up at the moment, and half of them are down.
Not complaining, just offering data points - if latenight downtime was absolutely unacceptable, I’d be paying 40x as much for a dedicated server @ Rackspace.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:20 am
One one of my sites are effected by this.. it happens to be my personal blog, which is a sobdomain.. which is a little odd.. because the http://www. works just fine. :-/
Only hiccup I get from this is that my OpenID is routed through my personal blog, so I can’t login to anything while this is going on… but I’ll deal. Hope Spunky comes out of this ok.
Keep up the good work, DH.
Matt
February 6th, 2008 at 12:29 am
I’ve got about 8 different sites on the alvarado server and half an hour ago, they all went down — first as “403 Forbidden,” weirdly, but now as “Can’t connect to server.”
Would have been nice for DH to list the servers affected in the cluster — I didn’t realize that my problem was likely related to the Spunky cluster until I searched around on this site to learn what servers are in Spunky.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:33 am
I’m glad I wasn’t dropped on my head as a baby, or I might be one of those people that can’t tell the difference between submitting a support ticket and crying in blog comments.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:39 am
Yea, well the worse thing is, I’ve heard if your site gets a lot of downtime, you’ll start losing search engine traffic.
I mean Google or Live or Yahoo, I guess don’t want to pull up sites on their search which aren’t going to load when their searchers click on them.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:40 am
fuck off No you homo
February 6th, 2008 at 12:54 am
@ Frustrated: DUDE! YOU ARE AWESOME!
Please, allow me to lead your campaign.

February 6th, 2008 at 12:58 am
how long will it be down? im on Olive and i have like 9 sites down. this sucks.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:04 am
i have 10 sites down….
February 6th, 2008 at 1:13 am
I just hope they do the entire Randy move now, cause I’ve already been down for over 3 hours anyways.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:14 am
Anyone else have domains hosted on highland that are down?
All mine seem to be down — web, email, etc., and I can’t seem to find highland in the list of servers scheduled to be down.
Just want to make sure it’s not just my account before submitting a ticket - thanks!
February 6th, 2008 at 1:17 am
My sites on alvarado appear to have returned.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:19 am
i am in highland too, and nothing works
February 6th, 2008 at 1:37 am
Thanks manu
February 6th, 2008 at 1:38 am
This is what I get on my sites
While trying to retrieve the URL: http://www.hostinggossip.com/
The following error was encountered:
* Connection to 208.113.249.228 Failed
The system returned:

February 6th, 2008 at 1:47 am
I can confirm sites on highland appear to be down.
February 6th, 2008 at 2:12 am
Web on ugh server. All but one (exchangechurch.com) are working. No http://FTP. Mail (randy) is fine, MySQL (baby) is fine. Weirdness. Can’t find the server error.
February 6th, 2008 at 2:50 am
I seriously hope that they’re doing the move today cause it’s been over 5 hours since my sites are down and 4 hours & 55 mins since I filled in the support ticket.
I don’t want to go thru another outage in a couple of days.
February 6th, 2008 at 3:03 am
Am I the only one here who’s site is still down?
Anybody with a Dreamhost PS down besides me?
February 6th, 2008 at 3:38 am
6:30AM EST - No email on either IMAP or POP3. Websites are up, though. Hope this doesn’t last long.
February 6th, 2008 at 3:52 am
Aww I made frustrated cry. Poor thing. Or doesn’t it count because he was already crying like a little girl? Do I at least get a few points for making him cry harder than he was already crying?
February 6th, 2008 at 3:53 am
Everything is down on my domains: sites, mail, ftp - the lot.
Ho hum…
February 6th, 2008 at 3:56 am
My sites on highland seem to be back… still having trouble getting email though.
February 6th, 2008 at 4:20 am
If people searched the wiki for “bad_httpd_conf” instead of posting here, they might actually accomplish something.
February 6th, 2008 at 5:10 am
No alert about the down time, we operate mainly in Italy where having site down during work time is a very bad things
February 6th, 2008 at 5:21 am
Just got all my stuff back by following the Wiki instructions for rebuilding httpd conf.
Here’s a potted summary:
1 Open your panel.
2. Go to Domains -> Manage Domains.
3. Select the problem domain.
4. Click on ‘Edit’.
5. Don’t do anything - just click on the ‘Change fully hosted settings now’ button.
6. Wait a few minutes and try accessing your domain again.
7. Repeat for all problem domains, including redirects (if any).
February 6th, 2008 at 5:22 am
great
February 6th, 2008 at 5:32 am
Re: post 43.
We now know why he’s “Frustrated”
… it’s funny how it’s always the macho ones. Must be trying to overcompensate.
February 6th, 2008 at 5:33 am
Malcolm -
Just did what you said. did that bring email back up to?
February 6th, 2008 at 5:36 am
It’s now 8:35 AM EST - more than 2 hours since DH’s last update. still no email. How long, O Lord, how long?
February 6th, 2008 at 5:47 am
Hi Michael,
No, it doesn’t bring back email. Trying to get into webmail I get the error message “Connection dropped by IMAP server.”
I did try the same ‘edit’ method with my email accounts, but no help.
I’ve submitted a follow-up support ticket to get the IMAP sorted out.
February 6th, 2008 at 6:15 am
Hmm resolved you say… My email still doesn’t work.
February 6th, 2008 at 6:27 am
Ditto. This is VERY frustating. One of my domains serves a whole office full of people who can’t get or send email. How about an update, DH?
February 6th, 2008 at 6:56 am
My services are restored.
February 6th, 2008 at 7:06 am
Thank you
Malcolm Johnson [63] That worked for me.
February 6th, 2008 at 7:45 am
4+ hours since their last update, still no email. No response to support ticket. Is anybody home?
February 6th, 2008 at 8:41 am
Hi, still problems with email, need an ETA got some very pissed clients
February 6th, 2008 at 8:46 am
No email all morning, no response to support ticket either.
February 6th, 2008 at 8:52 am
Why does this post say “severity: low” and “resolved: yes” when it’s almost 11am on 2/6, and I still can’t my email after your 2/5 10:30pm process that was going to take “no longer than one hour”? Looks like I’m not alone, either. Also no response to support ticket.
February 6th, 2008 at 9:38 am
cmon how long do we have to wait until we have email back……. june can’t come soon enough to get a host that knows what they are doing
February 6th, 2008 at 9:54 am
hey is there any update?
our email server seems to be down still.
folks here are freaking out a little. is there anything i can do?
kerul.dyer@gmail.com -another email i can be found at…
February 6th, 2008 at 10:01 am
Counting almost 12 hours and I’m down.
For me, the emails are working, the sites aren’t coming up.
February 6th, 2008 at 10:15 am
7 hours since their last update. Still no email. No response to support ticket. Maybe they should change their name to Nightmarehost.
February 6th, 2008 at 10:31 am
okay…im ready for email…so are the attorneys!
February 6th, 2008 at 10:42 am
michael,
funny i just wrote an email to a stranger named michael that i set up wildcalifornia.org. thats not you is it?
February 6th, 2008 at 11:05 am
My clients want eat me without sauce!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please Hurry up !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
February 6th, 2008 at 11:13 am
So, we’re having issues with e-mail. KK. We submit a ticket. BUT, we can’t access e-mail. WTF? What do I tell my clients when I don’t know exactly what’s going on? How can we ask when we won’t be able to check our e-mail for the response?
February 6th, 2008 at 11:31 am
Am I the only person who’s websites are down?
I mean email is working fine for me, at least it was last time I checked, 5-6 hours ago.
But my websites are down now for over 13 hours.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
Clients are closing in on me. Please, some sort of update! It would not be so bad if you would just update.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:13 pm
Also no e-mail on any domains. No response to trouble ticket. Wassup???!!
February 6th, 2008 at 12:25 pm
agreed! please some kind of update would be great.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:31 pm
Ok, my sites are coming back up, but I’m still getting a database error on all of them.
Something like ‘Access denied’ type of errors.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
Imagine that, Dreamhost claiming on their support page everything is fine while countless customers have been without email all day long.
Bravo Dreamhost — only thing worse than downtime is not even acknowledging the downtime.
February 6th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
I was unable to use my mails all the day. i need it to work. When?
February 6th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
I can’t belive all the freaks that keep acting like DH is a great company with great hosting.
this place stinks
February 6th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
I have begun submitting trouble tickets until they resolve the problem or post what the h@#$ is going on….
February 6th, 2008 at 12:52 pm
i’m gonna submit another one. one every 15 minutes. we should do that…
February 6th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
@ Carlos: I’ve been doing every hour, I think I’ll switch to every 15 minutes too, maybe they’ll notice.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
what is going on? 9+ hours and counting and still no update? Anyone think maybe they’re secretly moving their mail servers without telling us, and then plan to surprise us when it’s all done?
sigh. i don’t know.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
There are those that can afford attorneys and actually know when to use them… and then there are idiots like you, that don’t seem to know what they’re there for.
Is there some sort of genetic defect that causes poor people that can’t afford attorneys to run around acting like they’re constantly consulting with one?
Tell them the truth, which is that you aren’t smart enough to know you can just view tickets and responses through the panel, without email.
It took them this long to realize you’re an idiot?
Notice how every time you post, everything you say is stupid? So, your brilliant idea is to flood the support queue and slow things down for everyone? Let me guess… you believe your mom when she says she wasn’t constantly getting high while pregnant with you?
Oh, you must be referring to the thousands and thousands of people that pay to be here? Or did you think the small handful of whining crybabies in the comments section were actually the majority?
I guess you though everyone was trapped here, since there are only hundreds of thousands of hosts out there to choose from.
And yet you pay to be here. Guess that makes you a moron?
February 6th, 2008 at 1:15 pm
Let me see if I got this right: You’re publicly admitting to being as stupid as Carlos?
Sending more than one ticket on any subject just slows things down. Then the same clueless pieces of trash that cause the problem come here to cry about the delays.
You and Carlos should slice your wrists and drink some bleach as you wait to bleed out, since there’s no chance of either of you even hitting the intelligence level of a rock.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
@No:
Do you think there is ever a legitimate reason not to take 5 minutes and update your clients that have been without email for 9+ hours?
I’m not foolish enough to think that everything will go right all the time (especially for the price) — but to go 9 hours without taking 5 minutes just to write a quick update is assinine.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
@No: It’s called sarcasm. By the way, your mom says you need to behave yourself
February 6th, 2008 at 1:18 pm
If you’re going to save money by not having any “live” person there to speak to — thats fine. But the tradeoff is you have to be somewhat responsive by blog/supportticket/whatever when problems do arise.
Keeping everyone in the dark for 9 hours while insulting them with a “Severity: Low, Resolved: Yes” message is like the kid who delays coming home because he got a bad report card. Just own up to what’s going on, let everyone know, and work on fixing it.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Although, I’m glad that No feels high and mighty on his soap box. I bet he masturbates when he replies in this forum. LOL.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:26 pm
When everything you say is stupidity, that’s not sarcasm, it’s stupidity.
You need them to tell you that your email is still broken? Wow, you’re smart.
Or did you think they weren’t working on it because you haven’t been updated?
You just like to cry and if it wasn’t over this, it would be something else. Boo Hoo.
Waaaaaaaaaaaaa Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
February 6th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
No. You’re a crack up. I guess small dicks DO make people insecure!!!
February 6th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
Coming from the person that clearly has it on his mind. Puberty?
Although it’s clear that you are a complete idiot, I’m sure the other kiddies in your class would have thought that was hilarious.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
Man, looks like you’re really getting off on replying to me. Should I be paying 3.99 a minute for this? Reply to me if you like cock…
February 6th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
Again, the kiddies in your class would think that was hilarious. That was the very first time that a dumbass that has nothing to say tried to fill the void with a lame dick joke. Brilliant AND original.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
And that shows Dreamhost’s biggest problem.
Too many of their customers are just stupid little kiddies that wouldn’t even have a hosting account if there mothers weren’t stupid enough to let them use their credit cards.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Now I AM convinced that I’m getting to you. LOL. How sad. Keep replying> This is highly entertaining. *goes back to fucking his mom in the ass* LMAO!!!
February 6th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
Getting to me? I guess you just forgot that you’re the loser that was here crying about how your life is falling apart. I merely showed up to laugh at how you are failing at life.
Do you really think anyone that’s so amused with mommy and dick jokes should be LMAO’ing at anyone else?
It’s like I already said, before you started making yourself giggle: Every single thing you say, without exception, is stupid. Your next post will be, too. Big surprise.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
It’s quite obvious No has never run a business (at least a successful one).
You don’t keep customers in the dark. Doesn’t matter if you’re telling them what they already know — its called reassurance and giving updates.
Takes 3 seconds for someone at Dreamhost to update the blog with “Still having issues, we’re working on it though.”
May seem trivial to you, but I guarantee you it makes a *world* of difference. Want to know how I know that?
Because I’ll likely be cancelling after this — not because of the downtime, as I know that will happen — but because of the pure incompetency and laziness of someone the Dreamhost staff to take 3 seconds out of their day just to throw out a little reassurance to customers.
Bad service? Tolerable if the price is right. Lazy employees with no concern for the customer? See ya later.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:36 pm
Thank you for your brilliant assessment of me. Man, you are so full of yourself. This is just entertainment to me. You posting and being high almighty about people whining about DH. Seriously, are you jacking-off when you reply??? LOL
February 6th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Well it has been 10 hours and no email and no updates as to what the #$%^& is happening. It’s bad enough that it went down but no updates or response is worse.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:38 pm
@ Frustrated as hell: careful, No is gonna put you in your place if you keep whining…. lol
February 6th, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Ok seriously guys, let’s Try to keep this thread on the civil and productive side. Any thoughts on a decent competitor to dreamhost with similar features? I’ve seen a few of the other hosts, and remember thinking that their web panels sucked, plus they didn’t have the announcement list features that i wanted- biggest problem is being able to move my current subscribers over to a new host without having them all Resubscribe again! what to do?!
February 6th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
@ anthony. i’ve actually been thinking about lately. moving clients over to a different host is risky. you may lose some in the process. there are so many out there. unfortunately, DH offers most of what I need and like. lately’ i’ve noticed their support (meaning notifying customers and not downplaying status alerts) has been going down. or you can just jump on your soap box and look down at all the stupid kiddies and inform then of what they really are (sorry, had to throw that in there). i’ve been looking into godaddy (who i use for SSL certs). not to keen on their CP…
February 6th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
You want to talk about being civil, then turn around and ask people to recommend competitors on Dreamhost’s own site? What a class act.
It was nothing that wasn’t already noticed by everyone else.
No it isn’t. You came here crying like a little girl and now you’re backtracking after getting called out for it. Here’s the part where you recycle a dick joke because you have nothing to say.
February 6th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
No! You’re back! Was wondering where your self-righteous ass went to!!!
February 6th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
@No:
This is just entertainment to me.
No it isn’t. You came here crying like a little girl and now you’re backtracking after getting called out for it. Here’s the part where you recycle a dick joke because you have nothing to say.
Really? You called me on that? Well, I hope that by calling me out you made yourself feel worthwhile. LO> still entertaining AND my blood pressure is still low. wonder how high your’s get when u reply? this is where you retort and say that’s no sweat of your back *insert dick joke here*
February 6th, 2008 at 1:57 pm
Does anyone have any USEFUL information? Like, has DH responded to ANYONE’s support ticket?
February 6th, 2008 at 1:58 pm
@ Michael: by useful do you mean by No quoting you and calling you ‘out’? LMFAO
February 6th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
no replies if i cancel this account will I be refunded what is left? i have until june but this is getting old i would like to make a switch sooner than later
February 6th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
Still backtracking? Try to find a doctor that agrees that whining and crying on a blog is a sign of being calm, cool & entertained. You’re just a frustrated little kiddie that got laughed at for crying like a girl, and now you’re trying to pretend you’re all grown up now, hoping someone will take you seriously.
Remember, anyone that reads this far, already read all of your stupidity that got you to this point. It will take more than pee pee jokes to convince anyone you’re not a whiny little idiot.
By the way geniuses, I’m on this cluster and my mail works fine, so it is resolved like it says. If you have other problems, it has nothing to do with this post. Maybe you can blame being stupid on Dreamhost as well.
February 6th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
I have submitted 15 tickets already and no response. Has anyone heard anything?
February 6th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
i have submitted 5 but not one reply… here goes another submit
February 6th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
HE”S BACK! HIGH ALMIGHTY IS BACK!! Welcome back No. Missed ya!!! Alas, I must go. I need to go find a doctor that agrees with me. No, give my regards to god, who obviously made you perfect that you kept trolling this forum to put me and everyone else in there place. Without you, this were would really suck! oh, btw, you said pee pee. LOL
February 6th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
My websites are back, but the email issue still persists. Has anyone heard from Dream Host about an ETA to get this resolved?
February 6th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
No and Carlos: you two are the class act. Idiots.
February 6th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
no responses, no updates
February 6th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
rubble rubble rubble…
February 6th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
I’ve been checking this forum all day for updates. About a hour ago it was at 86… now its 130. I was stoked that maybe we had some answers, but all i got was ridiculous arguing from No and Carlos. Obviously you two are fucked without email, don’t you have some real work to do?
February 6th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
See Malcolm Johnson’s suggested fix to bring your site back up (comment #63): It may work for you.
Thanks, Malcolm–I did what you suggested, and it brought my site back up immediately. Now all I need is my email (forwarding to another address in the meantime).
I put in my first support ticket a little after 12AM PST, and I’ve received only an automated reply.
February 6th, 2008 at 3:22 pm
@F.Redtarp
Yet another idiot speaks up. It seems that there are a lot of you this day.
February 6th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
12 hours and no email, I don’t consider that Severity: Low Resolved:Yes. I consider that Severity high Resolved NO!
February 6th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
In Virginia and *not* a happy customer right now.. on an odd note.. sending mail works, receiving does not.. logging in to webmail does not…
February 6th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
I’m sorry I’m such an asshole. I can’t help it, I just have to masturbate every time I see the words DreamHost. I want to be their gimp. Please happy DH staff, beat me senseless.
February 6th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
Is email working for you all? For us, none of our sites have email working — not IMAP, not webmail. For webmail, the squirrel mail screen comes alright, but login fails.
February 6th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
Yup, that’s what’s been happening all day, at least since 6AM EST. No change, no news. Not sure what purpose this Comments section serves, other than sharing our complaints with each other.
February 6th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
It been really up and down lately….
What going on?
Apparently, there not even a problem….. No post about nothing.
Well
Please Fix It for GOOD!

Good people, I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again - if your web site and mail services are vital to a money-earning business, then Dreamhost is not for you. You’d be well advised to pay the ante and get your hosting from one of the industry’s Big Boys.
For folk like me who are in the web scene just for the fun and sheer hell of it, and run non-profit making sites and forums, Dreamhost is the answer to our prayers: cheap, cheerful, gung-ho and loaded with enough extras to keep us busy for a lifetime.
Frustrating, it can be - reliable, it isn’t - but it works for me!
February 6th, 2008 at 5:06 pm
Webmail back up as of 7:30Pm EST. Haven’t tried POP3. Looks like no messages were lost. Oh well, onward and upward.
February 6th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
oooooooo. that felt good! man, is my member ever so soar!!!
February 6th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
Come on guys, look at me, I’m touching my toes - ram a tree stump up there, and while you’re at it, triple bill me, I don’t mind at all, in fact I consider it my duty to be bent over and screwed repeatedly by DH. Oh, and that pesky little hosting thing, don’t worry about fixing it, I understand you have more important things to do, like bending your loyal subjects over and giving us all a jolly good ass-bashing.
February 6th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
My site works but my SQL database isn’t working because my phpBB board won’t let anyone (including me) log in. Just reports all these errors. Over 3 hours and no response from DH for either of my tickets.
February 6th, 2008 at 7:53 pm
Eric Seiden - - - I’m having the same problem here. My users cannot login or create accounts anymore. I also have not received a response to my tickets for 4 hours now. SERVER: lovejoy
February 6th, 2008 at 10:04 pm
Well, thank goodness. I thought it was just me. My site worked fine at 6:00 PM est then BOOM, no one could log in. and those that were already logged in could no longer post. That was 7 hours ago. No response from DH yet. I am sure they must be working on it though.
February 7th, 2008 at 5:21 am
Well over 24hrs later I still have no email access.
Squirrelmail is there, but it like my standalone email client fails to authentice.
This is the first outage which has really put pressure on me and the work I’m doing.
No reply from a support call logged 15hrs ago.
Not happy at all.
February 7th, 2008 at 6:28 am
Wow, over 12 hours since my databases stopped working. As far as I can tell, no one seemed to care enough to get their customers up and running in a timely manner. Nice hosting service.
February 7th, 2008 at 6:37 am
Diana and Rex,
Same thing with my site. Wordpress suddenly stopped responding. Nobody could comment, I couldn’t write new posts and now I can’t even log in.
I submitted two support tickets 12 hours ago. Not a word from Dreamhost.
February 7th, 2008 at 7:36 am
None of my sites have gone down and my email is working perfectly.
I just come here for the belly laughs =)
February 7th, 2008 at 7:40 am
Databases still not working. My only concern is that nothing has been posted on the status page about this. I am sure this is a HUGE issue and Dreamhost is working on it. I just wish they could post something so we know what is going on.
February 7th, 2008 at 8:13 am
P.S. I still do not see the issue on the Dreamhost Status page, but you will note people are also posting about it on the Dreamhost Forums. It definately is a large issue effecting many:

I don’t know about the rest of your sites, but mine just started working. It seems they fixed the problem.
February 7th, 2008 at 8:20 am
My databases are back online as of 8.10 PST. - MySQL server = ARGOS
February 7th, 2008 at 9:13 am
@Diane - If you divided by zero any harder you’d create a black hole.
February 7th, 2008 at 9:32 am
I just read 156 comments and I must say…how do some of you get up and tie your shoes? Seriously, all the ignorant, foolish remarks and comments in here makes me wonder at times.
http://discussion.dreamhost.com/showthreaded.pl?Cat=&Board=forum_troubleshooting&Number=100646&page=&view=&sb=&o=&vc=1#Post100646
One of Diana’s post that you might need to see. Some of you think that “Hey, it’s always DH’s fault” or “Why can’t I access? $(&U(&(# DH!” Most of the time, it’s not DH’s fault. If you ever taken a computer class AT ALL (And if you haven’t, listen up) then this saying should ring something. “It’s usually not the computer’s fault. It’s the user that’s telling the computer what to do.”
Remember, computers only do what you tell it to do. Failing items happen with wear and tear. If you are trying to make a lot of money off of this host, then you might want to consider this alternative. Buy your own server. High an IT professional to manage and update it. You’ll be able to do a lot more things with it than using a Web Host.
Now, since I cleared up that garbage now, to the legit comments.
Malcolm Johnson’s post was about the most helpful I have seen. All that did was re-sync the domain to the web and to the server. Mailservers need to be done by DH.
As far as the Database issues part, that link above gives you what the problem was. But it might be wise for you to upgrade to the PHP5. It works better than PHP4. Just a suggestion.
Now, if anyone tries to be a blundering fool and try to rip me apart…be my guest. But let’s just say that I have ways to make you look even more like a fool.
But let’s hope it don’t come down to that.
February 7th, 2008 at 9:59 am
Somehow I doubt a voice of reason is goin to help
February 7th, 2008 at 10:12 am
I doubt as well, but hey. It never does hurt.
February 7th, 2008 at 10:13 am
Is anyone experiencing problems downloading e-mails. I have not been able to download my e-mail since approximately 8PM PST yesterday February 8, 2008
February 7th, 2008 at 11:21 am
DreamHost why have thou forsaken thee? Here I am waiting with my pants around my ankles, and still you do not come. Did I offend you somehow? Perhaps I can tell you some of my friend’s email servers and you can take them down too, would that help?
February 7th, 2008 at 11:22 am
I got my thee’s and thou’s mixed up didn’t I - that’s why you don’t give my the punishing I deserve. Woe is me.

VOTE FOR PEDRO
February 7th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
FINALLY I AM FREE. EVERYTHING HAS NOW TRANSFERRED SUCCESSFULLY TO A NEW HOST, AND I JUST HAD THE GREATEST OF PLEASURE DELETING DREAMHOST FROM MY BOOKMARKS.
TO ALL YOU FOOLS STILL WITH DREAMHOST - I PITY YOU. ENJOY YOUR NEVER-ENDING DOWNTIME, LOST EMAILS AND AT THE VERY LEAST, LATENCY. I HAVE NO PITY HOWEVER FOR THE DH ZEALOTS WHO CONTINUE TO SING THE PRAISES OF AN INCREDIBLY SHODDY WEBHOST. SURE THEY MIGHT BE A BUNCH OF FUN ENTREPRENEURS, BUT IT’S AT YOUR EXPENSE, AND THEY’RE LAUGHING ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK.
WOOF.
February 7th, 2008 at 5:40 pm
I am on the Spunky cluster, and at this time webmail simply doesn’t work (most of the time I get “wrong username or password” when the password is entered correctly). As I think some others may have noted, forwarding can be used as a workaround until DreamHost gets their act together. It is somewhat disingenuous for DH to label this problem as “Resolved”.
(P.S. do not feed the trolls. They only grow larger and more unpleasant.)
February 7th, 2008 at 5:55 pm
Bye Angry. Have a good time. Don’t bother coming back to check on us.
February 7th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
I really hope angry dog dies.
He’s also lying about having left.
February 7th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
Let him bask momentarily in the sunshine of false hope.

My stuff today:

Come on, Dreamhost, you’re slacking - with just a bit more effort you could *really* screw things up!
February 8th, 2008 at 2:57 am
Within minutes of posting a support ticket my MySQL springs back to life - probably just coincidence, but two cheers for the Happy Dreamhost crew.
Dreamhost has now become a running joke on my main forum.

Do the users who reported their sites up, noticed any problems? I am wondering if the DH backup worked okay! Also, does anyone knows what happens to incoming mail during the downtime? …Thanks.
