Problems with bowser

This server isn’t coming up when rebooted. It’s now being moved to a new machine. Should be back up shortly.

Update: this was completed but the post wasn’t resolved. Sorry about that.

first major outage for me in over a year…I feel kind of excited because it is like I am part of some elite club, but also kind of sad because my site is down. The two feelings are causing some nausea.

    Moved to a new machine,

Well, there are some signs of progress here. :)

    @tim -

No, the elite club will not get your machine running faster. But a +2 stick of sharpiness would feel better than a kick to the groin.

    I see no progress :-(

    [bowser]$ uptime
    20:05:20 up 23 days, 5:02, 4 users, load average: 1.71, 0.98, 0.74

    [bowser]$ date
    Thu Mar 6 20:05:26 PST 2008

So it has not being rebooted or replaced…

Ok, i can take it back - it could be a box swapped in (renamed/reIPed) without rebooting.
But still - it does not seem to work.

why are some emails getting through but others aren’t? I’m getting emails from organizations but not from individuals.

    DaddyGeek Says:

Judith: Your e-mail issue is probably related to the e-mail slowdown they mentioned in another post. If you are using their Junk Mail filtering then they are working on it and trying to alleviate the load. If you are not using the Junk mail Filter then you should send in a report through the system panel.

    See http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/2008/02/25/mail-delay-on-junk-filtered-domains-3/ for more details.

that problem seems to be from a week ago. are they still having problems??

    Judith Says:

sorry if this is a beginner’s question but can anyone tell me how to get into the web panel to report a problem? my email address and web panel password will not log me in. my cookies are enabled. is there some other reason I’m unable to log into this?

  12. 12
    DaddyGeek Says:

Yes, as they said they will leave that one as unresolved until the final dregs of it goes away. As this is an e-mail issue it can take a while for it to get cleared up and the queues processed properly as there is always more mail coming in.
The one thing I didn’t see emntioned was whether disabling the filtering would speed up subsequent e-mail to your domain. Hmm… Guess I;ll post that question in the other thread…

    @confused

Actually, the uptime you’re seeing is that of the NEW hardware that the logical machine “bowser” was moved to. When an old machine is “failed over” to new hardware the new hardware may have been online for quite some time. A reboot is not required so a very high uptime in this case is not uncommon. As it is taking the place of the old hardware all of the IP addresses will remain the same. The only thing that changes is the hardware itself. The whole process of failing over a server usually takes an hour or two and some services do take longer than others to come back online.

  14. 14
    DaddyGeek Says:

Judith: Maybe scrounge up your old e-mail they sent you with the ID/Password and check that you are using the proper id? Also, did you try the “forgot password” link to reset your password?

  15. 15
    rlparker Says:

Judith: It is also possible that you might need to delete your existing DreamHost cookie, and try again if you are sure your web id and password are correct. This often corrects a login issue.

@confused: we have spare hardware already on and running. Failing a web machine over to new hardware does not require a reboot.

You can always get a message to them using this link- http://www.dreamhost.com/contact.cgi and get a conversation going so you can figure out what your login should be.

Calm down, everyone, just take it easy. If you’re so concerned about 125% uptime, then go spend the money and get a dedicated server.

If not, chill out and wait with the rest of us shared hostees.

This same behavior happened two days ago, starting around this comment:

    http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/2008/03/05/spunky-file-server-issue/comment-page-1/#comment-135131

Notice that this was AFTER the “Spunky” error had been resolved. Like today, the status forums were just the only place we could communicate.

It came back within the hour, but there was absolutely NO status followup on what had happened. Seems a rather serious outage for them to sweep under the rug. Let’s hope there’s some feedback this time…

    judi Says:

    Katie,

I thought I broke it too haha. I just tried installing two one click app things, but the 2nd one didnt go. Guess I gotta redo it later. HOPEFULLY not too much later.

Sunny, I know, freaky!? It scared me massively!

Y’know… I wonder if they have people there 24/7, or some kind of alert that gets sent to a maintenance team when something goes wrong.
