Spunky and Central Move
We’re about to begin to move the spunky cluster and our central machines. We’ll be taking down servers soon, but our status site, of course, will remain up and running.
Again, we’ll try to keep this move quick and painless as we possibly can, and we apologize for the inconvenience.
For more details on this, see the previous post here:
http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/2008/03/14/central-services-and-spunky-cluster-move/
UPDATE — Sat Mar 22 00:12:05 PDT 2008 –
Most central functions are back up. Dreamhost.com and panel.dreamhost.com are working again. We are currently working on webmail. The spunky cluster move is still underway. We’ll post more here later.
UPDATE — Sat Mar 22 02:45:26 PDT 2008 –
Webmail is up! 99% of all central services are functioning now. Spunky is 80% racked, more info on that to follow.
UPDATE — Sat Mar 22 03:40:27 PDT 2008 –
Spunky is coming up. We’re spotchecking and fixing troubled file, web, and mail servers. We’ll sound an all when all is clear… We will likely be firefighting for the next few hours.
UPDATE — Sat Mar 22 06:01:28 PDT 2008 –
Spunky is still coming up, we’re dealing with a couple of machines that didn’t survive the move and some more cleanup stuff. We’ll keep you posted as things progress!
UPDATE — Sat Mar 22 07:04:35 PDT 2008 –
We have noticed a problem with some of our networks. They seemingly did not make the jump to the new router and we are looking into that. Any websites with IP addresses that look like either 64.111.xxx.xxx or 208.113.xxx.xxx are down to the outside world right now. The machines themselves are up so as soon as the networks are working again they’ll begin working immediately.
UPDATE — Sat Mar 22 09:55:54 PDT 2008 –
The networking problem has been resolved with our network provider so as of right now all services should be up and running. If anything is not working, please open a new support message from our web panel.

Ahhh man… and I was trying to do a blog post…. oh well, time for beer
March 21st, 2008 at 7:59 pm
What? Again??
Was there some sort of heads-up given for this that I missed?
March 21st, 2008 at 8:00 pm
I wold LOVE to know where dreamhoststatus.com is hosted.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:01 pm
damn, guess I’ll stop working tonight then
March 21st, 2008 at 8:03 pm
12 hours begin now…
Flood this with hate comments!!
It gonna be a long time for sure I tell you.
But I only hope that things improve for better after all this pain.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:03 pm
I agree, it’s time to stop working and go to bed.
Does Dreamhost have folks working 24/7?
J
March 21st, 2008 at 8:04 pm
Best of luck to everyone working on this move tonight!!!!
March 21st, 2008 at 8:04 pm
I was wondering why a cb_login module was taking so long to get installed. Now i know why. I feel stupid, i shoulded knew that if i was doing something important the server was going to go down :).
March 21st, 2008 at 8:05 pm
Why the hell don’t you give us some notice before you just shutdown the server?
I was in the middle of a commit, and then needed to do an svn up on my home system - I’m working here.
[snicker]$
Broadcast message from root (Fri Mar 21 20:58:25 2008):
The system is going down for system halt NOW!
svn commit -m “favicon”
Sending .htaccess
Sending data.txt
Adding (bin) favicon.ico
Transmitting file data .Connection to *****.com closed by remote host.
Connection to ***.com closed.
this is the second time you guys have shut the server down without warning while I was working, don’t you have any respect for your customers?
All I needed is to know 10 minutes before hand that it was imminent, and I’d have been able to continue working.
Pissed as hell
March 21st, 2008 at 8:06 pm
and just to point out to some of the posters - its 3pm here.DH has customers that are _not_ from that tiny country USA.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:06 pm
bob cobb– same here….
March 21st, 2008 at 8:07 pm
We should all play Super Smash Bros. Brawl while our sites are down. Friend codes, anyone?
March 21st, 2008 at 8:08 pm
Man, sure picked the wrong (or right) time to backup stuff I had on sake.
on to 12 hours of waiting
March 21st, 2008 at 8:08 pm
There was a post here a week ago warning everyone about this downtime. Everyone doesnt read this page, but atleast they did that. I forgot to tell my users about it though
March 21st, 2008 at 8:11 pm
@”Ahhhhhhhh Says:
March 21st, 2008 at 8:00 pm
I wold LOVE to know where dreamhoststatus.com is hosted.”
It appears that dreamhoststatus.com is hosted at http://www.servepath.com/
March 21st, 2008 at 8:11 pm
Are you guys drunk? This is the 8th time i’ve had some issues this company!
My grandmother has her cooking site on here and she is so pissed right now. I’m literally not allowed to go out anymore!! She’s grounded me! For christ sakes please can you get the servers up and running right now.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:11 pm
They should email everyone a week in advance with an expected downtime of this duration. They should also start the downtime when they say they will instead of 10 minutes early. Are we supposed to check this blog out each day to see if maybe they’re going to take things down for 12 hours someday? 1000’s of web admins are all getting paged right now that their site is down. At first, many will ignore it, because they’re used to short downtimes on occasion. LOL Then they will figure out that this isn’t the normal outage. Dreamhosties, please shoot us all an email next time you plan something extreme like this okay?
March 21st, 2008 at 8:13 pm
Indeed, an e-mail for planned outages like this should be sent out as a courtesy to your customers.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:15 pm
oh god I thought my site was down because I didnt pay my bill yet :gonk:
March 21st, 2008 at 8:15 pm
Aff my site off
March 21st, 2008 at 8:15 pm
Aww man, just my luck…half way through upgrading my wordpress. I hope this is resolved quickly as it’s past 4am in the UK and I am ready for bed, but can’t leave things as they are now…eep.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:16 pm
Pardon a stupid question, but why can’t this be done by mirroring an old server onto a new server at the new data center and then doing a network switch? If you don’t want to commit to that many new machines, then do it a few at a time. Switch 10 to new machines, move the 10 old machines to the new data center, do another switch, continue until done.
I find it difficult to believe that considering how much you use network storage that you couldn’t have done this move with only minimal downtime (e.g., seconds).
I understand you need to upgrade your infrastructure on occasion, but how about doing a bit more thinking about how to do these things without impacting customers? Much less impacting them for HOURS of downtime! I really like you guys, but most hosting companies would be embarrassed by this much continuous downtime, planned or not.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:16 pm
Hum, I agree, they should notify everyone a few night in advance…
That whta email is for. seriously…
Need some thing better then this stupid blog once it down…
Come on how much can a mass emailer cost?…
anyway guess i got to bed…
Bob
March 21st, 2008 at 8:18 pm
Good luck, hope you guys get it done soon, I am working on some scripts for my game. So hopefully it will be back and running by the time I have to upload them.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:18 pm
Ah, just read it is set to last 12+ hours…ouch, that is a crazy amount of downtime
but at least it means I can head to bed now.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:18 pm
Aff my site is off.
Hosting bad, very bad
March 21st, 2008 at 8:19 pm
Yes, emails should be posted to the address of each user account on relevant machines!
I hate this status site. I hate having an RSS feed. I want email alerts for downtime warnings.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:20 pm
If anyone was interested about being notified of such things, they could have subscribed to the RSS feed … over 600,000 domain hosted does *NOT* make email a good way to do this …. srsly!
March 21st, 2008 at 8:21 pm
I have no other choice, I have to change the dreamhost
March 21st, 2008 at 8:22 pm
An alert on the control panel or something would have been nice.. 12 hours on a friday night/saturday? Are you shitting me?
March 21st, 2008 at 8:22 pm
Nice service, Dreamhost. Of course I chose to try to make a blog post tonight of all nights. It was working fine one minute, then everything’s broken, even panel.dreamhost.com is down. Makes you guys look real unprofessional. I just got my renewal bill yesterday — looks like I’ll be doing some shopping in the next few weeks…
March 21st, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Oh and I absolutely LOVE how people can still sign up for service but no one can contact Dreamhost..
March 21st, 2008 at 8:23 pm
And another thing… this point is moot since I didn’t know this was going to happen anyway, but I’m on a PS, and my hostname was NOT listed in your list of hosts going down. I assume one of the names was probably the “real” hostname, but that doesn’t do me any good since I don’t know what that is. If it had been important for me to know that it was going down, I’d be screwed. So if you’re going to give us a list, make sure it’s an accurate list including the virtual servers.
(Does anybody from Dreamhost actually read these rant sessions when things go down?)
March 21st, 2008 at 8:23 pm
The Hosting this very bad
March 21st, 2008 at 8:24 pm
Lol thank god that’s what it is. We’re having some MMO DRAMALLAMAS on my forums and I thought the jackass who started it tried something.
But if it’s just downtime, that makes me feel better. :3
March 21st, 2008 at 8:25 pm
Furthermore.. couldn’t they at LEAST have redirected all traffic for those servers to a generic page saying what is going on? All of our users have NO idea why we are down and it is freaking annoying.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:27 pm
@Tim (#34) - “(Does anybody from Dreamhost actually read these rant sessions when things go down?)”
Only for comic relief! The *REAL* action is at http://fuckdreamhost.com, which DreamHost staff visits regularly!
March 21st, 2008 at 8:28 pm
Hmm that domain isn’t registered.. yet.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:28 pm
I agree with others who have stated that Dreamhost NEEDED to proactively notify customers of this. I was working on finishing up a client site tonight and now I can’t, even though I promised my client delivery of the new changes by tomorrow.
If I had known of this migration, I would have planned around it. An email would have been nice.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:30 pm
The list of servers affected in this move is not accurate. My sites are not on the list, but are all down right now. I can live with the down time, but please, please make the list accurate.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:31 pm
I wish they would have given the heads up >.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:31 pm
Nice warning!! Man, DH is pissing me off. I think I’m switching to http://www.hostmysite.com/. Time to get out of DH. Been using DH for years, but this is getting too bad. Thanks DH for your years of service, but good things have to come to an end sometime.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:33 pm
And, of course, since the panel is down I can’t submit a trouble ticket… I’m not getting any response from spacey at the moment. Sigh.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:35 pm
A) There was a warning put out A WEEK AGO, people. A WEEK AGO. WAKE UP.
B) THEY TOLD YOU ALL A WEEK AGO.
C) AN ENTIRE DAMN WEEK.
Also, my site is down, whaaa!
March 21st, 2008 at 8:37 pm
I think of Dreamhost as a pretty professional and polished web hosting provider. I really like the fact that you guys realize what the internet is all about, communication. Your blogs and news letters are awesome, and engender a lot of forgiveness.
However, you guys have made a few mistakes recently. Such as the credit card charge debacle, and now this. You made a huge mistake not thinking of sending out a warning email. You managed to blog about it back on the 14th, however, not everyone bothers following the blog. Emails were absolutely necessary in this situation. Please get your act together! If your blog post has a ’severity’ of ‘high’, then why not automatically email everyone regarding that?
Thanks for listening.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:40 pm
Nobody with a brain would ever recommend hostmysite.com except for spammers that work there.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:42 pm
Oh the agony of a misplaced comma - real satisfaction during such times can be found at:
http://fuckdreamhost.com
March 21st, 2008 at 8:43 pm
Waaaaaaaaaaaaa!
I’m sure the internet will survive 12 hours with one less meaningless blog that only exists for the sake of saying “I blog.”
And it doesn’t make them look unprofessional since they gave you a week of notice. You could have bored the world with your pointless blogging before now. That way, your readers would all still be asleep and wouldn’t even see this downtime.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Well I agree about not receiving an email, as I don’t read this blog unless my site is down.
I’ve been really happy with the service, so don’t let things like this slip up cos bitterness spreads fast around the net.
Anyway, 12 hours to go, lucky that I was going to update tomorrow anyway.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Is it up yet? Is it up yet? Is it up yet?
March 21st, 2008 at 8:45 pm
My only complaint is that I received no heads up warning about this. If things need to be moved, they need to be moved. A little warning would have been nice is all I am saying.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:46 pm
Geez, I was in the middle of a shower and suddenly my site stops working? I got soap in my eye here, Dreamhost!!
March 21st, 2008 at 8:46 pm
Do you realize that is exactly the same as saying, “Being too stupid to subscribe to an RSS feed was absolutely necessary in this situation”?
Everyone that WANTS to be kept up to date… is.
And if they did send out emails, all the whiners would be here complaining about how unreliable email is and demand that there be an RSS feed. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:47 pm
Well, it’s the weekend…which means another server outage.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:49 pm
I’m pretty sure a weeks notice counts as a “heads up warning.”
It’s only been said a few hundred times though, so I’m not expecting it to sink in for you just yet.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:49 pm
MY SITE IS DOWN. ITS OFFICIAL. BE BACK ON SOON (HOPEFULLY).
March 21st, 2008 at 8:50 pm
This is a great source of amusment. Sending an email to over 600 000 people? Yes that seems perfectly logical….
I agree that some sort of warning would have been nice, but to be honest, it is 12 hours of you people’s lives. I assure you that you will survive without your websites for a mere twelve (going on eleven now) hours.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:50 pm
Happy Easter!?!?!
March 21st, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Funny thing is that even people outside the cluster are being affected! We are on pacey and web/email is up, but sql is down… rendering us inoperable all the same - this a a ‘bonus’ for us because we already had our allotted 12 hours of guaranteed downtime during the spacey move in january.
Gotta say, I *love* dreamhost’s support, their control panel and their pricing - but the downtime is just making it that much more difficult to keep singing their praises!
March 21st, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Actually, as a side note, I did in fact know about this move and scheduled downtime about a week ago, so I suppose they did put out a warning, if not as good as it should have been, it was still there.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Hmm, a 3 minute break between posts. That is rare!
Jessica, I am no DreamHost obsessor, but I can say that I knew about the scheduled downtime, and the reason for it, around a week ago.
March 21st, 2008 at 8:56 pm
I love that song……
March 21st, 2008 at 9:04 pm
Shawn, you’re a little bit on the annoying little shite side, aren’t you?
Just because you are so incredibly acquainted with the frequency of DH downtimes and the number of people who genuinely get upset about it does not mean that “you should have subscribed to this blog” is anything close to a reasonable solution, nor does your pissant little “waaa” comments help to soothe matters between DH and their already irate customers. I think you could actually help relations a tad bit by merely stfu-ing.
@Jason - a) I think 600k is way off the mark, and b) DH sends out periodic newsletters telling their customers how great they are… sending out a warning about downtime to make sure people know isn’t only reasonable, it’s expected. Hostrocket notifies of upcoming changes to all of their customers on a regular basis, even the free accounts.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:04 pm
Did you guys mean to take out DNS for all of the hosts that are still running?
[yoda]$ nslookup www.google.com
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
I’d report this in the panel…but it seems to be down.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:04 pm
My SQL servers are down.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:06 pm
My site is down, ftp is down, panel is down; can’t report the problem to anybody. Suggestions?
March 21st, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Email is the right channel for this type of planned downtime.
With a feed, you must read it like this:
DAY 1: sdflsdjf sdkf “no big deal” sdflsdjf sdkf “no big deal”
DAY 2: sdflsdjf sdkf “no big deal” sdflsdjf sdkf “no big deal” sdflsdjf sdkf “no big deal”
DAY 3: sdkf “no big deal” sdflsdjf sdkf “no big deal” sdflsdjf sdkf “no big deal” sdflsdjf sdkf “no big DAY 4: deal” sdflsdjf sdkf “no big deal” sdflsdjf sdkf “no big deal” BIG DEAL! sdflsdjf sdkf “no big DAY 5: deal”sdflsdjf sdkf “no big deal”sdflsdjf sdkf “no big deal”sdflsdjf sdkf “no big deal”sdflsdjf DAY 6: sdkf “no big deal”
See the message that affects you?
Here’s how emails work.
DAY 1: DUDE, YOUR SITE IS GOING DOWN NEXT WEEK FOR 12 HOURS.
Cool; got it. Thanks.
They brought down 100’s of servers without communicating directly with the admins. No bueno…
If they fire out a monthly newsletter, they can shoot me a quick email telling me my server will be down. Most people understand that this will happen on occasion with hosting plans like this.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to the resurrection after this Good Friday downtime.
Over and out…
March 21st, 2008 at 9:07 pm
be quick!
be quick!
March 21st, 2008 at 9:07 pm
Damn you RI! LOL!
March 21st, 2008 at 9:11 pm
“Truckload of fail brought to you by Dreamhost.com”
asses.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:13 pm
@Michael VanDeMar: I stand corrected, I honestly had forgotten about the monthly newsletter. Also, I have to agree, Damn you RI! I
March 21st, 2008 at 9:14 pm
I do think that in the case of super-critical things like this, that are scheduled, an e-mail to users who have content hosted on the affected servers would be a good policy to consider, in the future.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:16 pm
some of us prefer email, some prefer the RSS feed. I find it inconvenient to stay subscribed to the RSS feed. maybe DH could give us an option for what WE (the people who pay for it, the people who matter..) prefer. I prefer mail, and obviously a lot of the rest of y’all do. the option would be nice. I have a business to run, like everyone else on here, I cannot have this downtime. the website being down doesn’t bother me so much, but I can’t afford to be without my email server. Thanks a lot. I pay too much money for the amount of downtime I’ve experienced in the past years I’ve been a member. The service *was* great, but I will be finding another host. DH, you’ve failed to understand that it’s the customers that pay your salaries and for your equipment, and as any business knows, success is completely dependent on having happy customers. Obviously, you do not care, or I would think you’d be a little more conscious to how all this downtime affects *us*.
btw: my work grinds to a complete halt when I’m without my email. who’s going to make up for the loss of income I’m experiencing right now? I hope none of my clients are trying to contact me right now, or I will be sending them straight to you for an explanation.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:20 pm
First the billing goof-up where DH charged all their customers. Now this! Someone needs to be fired from their executive team.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:21 pm
I hope that this problem should be resolved quickly !
March 21st, 2008 at 9:21 pm
So, you looked everywhere, except for where you’re supposed? That makes you an airhead.
Instead, you come to place where you ARE notified, to claim that you haven’t been.
Send Dreamhost a support ticket telling them it’s their fault that you’re too stupid to figure out the RSS subscription that keeps everyone with a brain up to date. They’ll send a tech right out to flip the switch on the back of your head to the “On” position.
Yes, actually, you are. Very.
Know how you can spot the ones that aren’t stupid? They’re the ones that stay up to date and don’t come here claiming there was no warning, when there has been for a week.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:23 pm
Some of us prefer to stay up to date, rather than look like dumbasses, so we subscribe to the RSS instead of crying about email. This is how it has been for a very LONG TIME. Real quick learners around here.
It makes more sense for them to post it once, than to send out hundreds of thousands of emails that say the same thing.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:26 pm
Another funny thing about you illiterate morons that think email is the way to go, is that you’re the same people that would be dumb enough to use your dreamhost email address for receiving them… and you would be here complaining about not getting an email telling you when your mail server is down.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:27 pm
Another airhead that thinks this site was built specifically for unchallenged little baby tantrums?
If you don’t like getting called an idiot, then stop being one on sites where people can reply to point it out.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:28 pm
http://elliottback.com/wp/archives/2007/05/03/dreamhost-sucks-at-hosting/
March 21st, 2008 at 9:29 pm
This is absolutely ridiculous. At least send an email out to people affected and say “Hey, we’re pulling the plug on your server, don’t expect your website to work!”. I’m trying to sell a car and all of my pictures are down all the sudden when I try to submit them. And of course, my files are on the server, and not my computer, so I can’t upload them somewhere else. I’m just stuck waiting until you guys get this finished. Thanks.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:30 pm
You already attempted this move a week ago, what happened? Why are you bringing down sites yet again? Why don’t you have a plan that leaves websites and services up while you’re making your move, as most competent web hosts do?
This hosting company is turning into one of the worst out there. Constant headaches from mistakes, downtimes, what’s next?
March 21st, 2008 at 9:30 pm
I think such a *big planned move* requires that dreamhost emails about the planned downtime to the affected webmasters. Not everyone subscribes to the dreamhost status alerts. It will definitely go a long way to improve customer satisfaction, help them prepare and warn their readers and reduce comments on threads like this. I am fortunate to maintain a status blog, but not everyone does that.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:31 pm
Maybe, maybe not. You don’t speak for all the stupid people, though… and they would be here doing exactly what I said.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:33 pm
I’m hosting sites for clients and all this downtime from one cause or another is getting to be a problem. As for notice, yeah, I’ll have to fall in line with those wanting email notice a week ahead when something like this is going to affect me. And no, I don’t think they need send it to all of their customers, just those who are going to be affected.
As for the “get the RSS feed” crowd….. I don’t read RSS feeds. I’m doing good to check email five or six times a day.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:34 pm
I take it your reason for thinking that is because you’re not too bright?
Looks like I was right, because you prove it right here:
They’re called, “morons.” If you don’t want to be alerted, you won’t be.
You illiterate little babies have all the time in the world to whine here, but no time to check an RSS feed? Idiots.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:36 pm
Really, I have been an unwaivering supporter of Dreamhost, but I would really, really appreciate it if I was notified at least a day or two before you guys do something like this. I really don’t think that we’re asking too much here.
I had specifically planned to do the majority of my client work over the
March 21st, 2008 at 9:36 pm
would all of you donkeys trying to send support requests (why isn’tmy site working? what move?) get the fuck offline so the people who are trying to access the panel who read the big announcement in red a week ago can go about their work?
you dumb shits — quit your whining and pay attention to the status blog every once and awhile.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:36 pm
Thanks for explaining exactly what makes you stupid, for those that couldn’t already tell.
Maybe you can stop using brake pedals, then blame car manufacturers for when you crash into stuff.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:37 pm
Shawn, seriously, stfu. You really think that the DH team you are defending want you in here pissing off the already pissed off people? Did you even read this blog post about you?
http://elliottback.com/wp/archives/2007/05/03/dreamhost-sucks-at-hosting/
March 21st, 2008 at 9:39 pm
So… a weeks notice wasn’t enough, but 1 or 2 days would have been plenty?
Are you sure? If that’s still not enough, they could tell you 3 months after it happens, if that gives you more time to prepare.
Finishing a sentence is almost as hard as subscribing to a feed.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:41 pm
What does an almost 1 year old, irrelevant, whiny blog post have to do with me? Or anything else for that matter?
Besides, anyone that actually read up on that knew that moron was abusing the server. He’s almost as stupid as you, for thinking he was getting a dedicated server for $9/month.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:43 pm
hey shawn.. wanna dance?

Shawn:
you f’ing moron. it takes just as much effort to send an outage notice to the same damn mailing list they do the newsletters as it does to make a blog post on this site.
am I wrong, but when I pay for a hosting site, I expect uptime and reliability, and I don’t want to have to go check a stupid fucking rss feed or website every day just to know if I need to make other arrangements for clients. not to mention the fact that either way you look at it, I can’t give them a new email address to reach me at every god damn week because MY REAL MAILSERVER IS DOWN! and as was said earlier, it’s more effort than it’s worth to try and weed out all the stuff that doesn’t affect the individual user, given how many daily posts there are about the DAILY PROBLEMS!
March 21st, 2008 at 9:49 pm
Garbage! I love dreamhost, but this was bush league. No warning, just disappointment. With a bit of a heads up, I could have emailed people that viewed my site ahead of time. This was a royal f*cking, Dreamhost. You also had a recent billing debacle. I can easily tolerate a little downtime and the occasional email problems, but this was bull. That is two strikes. Three strikes, you’re out.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:50 pm
fuck this. unbelieveable.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:51 pm
Ok, so the actual issue is that you’d lose a battle with a f’ing soapdish, and simply don’t know wtf you are talking about then.
Would you like to take a stab at where in that post he described anything close to “abuse”?
March 21st, 2008 at 9:52 pm
I wonder if this will FUCK up our google rankings?
March 21st, 2008 at 9:52 pm
Oh, the unwarranted self-importance people have in regards to their piddly little sites and blogs.
Somehow I’m not convinced that all these internet celebrities with their “5,000 unique visitors” and the THOUSANDS of dollars of revenue their shared-hosting sites rake in hourly would really be using hosting that costs less than $10/mo.
Sit back and relax, folks. Your blogs and “Welcome to Joe Average’s Personal Webpage ;-)” sites will come back up and you can continue rolling in hits and dough soon enough.
March 21st, 2008 at 9:53 pm
Very mature. By the way, maybe you should how to use commas before calling others illiterate.
Anyone else think Shawn’s fanatical DH defense smacks of astroturfing?
March 21st, 2008 at 9:59 pm
Well, I guess I can stay up for a few more hours in order to send this email that has to go out tonight… at least I’ve got some caffeine. o_o And at least I can sleep in tomorrow.
March 21st, 2008 at 10:00 pm
Melissa, it’s a 12 hour downtime that only started 2 hours ago. You might need more coffee.
March 21st, 2008 at 10:01 pm
Are you fucking kidding me? 12 hours of downtime?! Without warning?!?!
I believe dreamhost has a 99.9% uptime guarantee. 12 hours down in a year is already below that guarantee (and that’s being generous, it really should be measured per month).
You guys need to send emails before something like this, and give plenty of time for everyone to get ready. Also, don’t do this shit at 10pm on a Friday - any self-respecting host would do this in the wee hours of Sunday morning when the country is asleep.
This is absolutely outrageous, and I expect a refund for this kind of service.
March 21st, 2008 at 10:04 pm
1) If there’s a problem be proactive. Send me an email. Don’t expect I have time to check your service blog every week.
2) Planning for downtime is a plan for failure. Instead you should have planned how to make the move with minimal or no down-time.
3) You have thousands of sites hosted on these servers and perhaps millions of visitors that have no idea why a particular site is offline. I can deal with the outage because I know what’s going on but all my visitors don’t get that benefit. The least you could do is put up a maintenance note for all these sites that are offline.
4) Having dreamhost.com itself offline is a kick-in the face to anyone trying to figure out why their site is down.
March 21st, 2008 at 10:05 pm
If they couldn’t keep a backup online, could they at least redirect requests to a “we’ll be back online soon” page?

James: I drive a Toyota, lol. It’s been running just fine since 1992 with little issue. If one comes up, I get it repaired and go on about my life. I don’t go to my mechanic, sit in the lobby and bitch about how much it’s depriving the world of my ability to drive.
That’s the difference between you and I.
Get it?
March 21st, 2008 at 10:25 pm
Using an RSS or an email alert is, as many of you point out, a personal choice. You chose to use email, fine. That’s your choice. DH uses an RSS alert system, that’s their choice. If you don’t like it, fine, go somewhere else that does use email alerts for downtime rather than RSS.
I don’t like getting letters in the mail; I hate leaving voice mail. That doesn’t stop important letters that I MUST deal with from coming to my mail box. I still have to leave voice mail for my employees as to their instructions for the week.
Don’t like something, tough. Deal with it or move on.
Welcome to life.
March 21st, 2008 at 10:26 pm
does that explain why my site has been in and out then?
or could it be due to the 500,000 successful page reqs. in about 8 days, or 1.4 million all together? (slight brag.)
March 21st, 2008 at 10:28 pm
Someone shouldn’t have to subscribe to a feed where 99% of the fucking posts won’t apply to them just to ensure that they can see one message that should be highlighted and sent directly to them, and it’s more than a little ignorant to suggest that they should.
March 21st, 2008 at 10:29 pm
For me, the thing is this: I can live without my website being up, but the fact that my e-mail is down and I didn’t realize it ahead of time is no laughing matter. Dreamhost has been an excellent company in the past, though they have made several minor screw-ups in the time they’ve managed my hosting, but this sort of thing is unacceptable without them taking responsibility for the mess, promising they wont let it happen again without a mass-mailing beforehand and off an apology to all of us.
March 21st, 2008 at 10:31 pm
The only complaint I have is that the note they posted a week ago said that the outage would begin at 9pm, and they started it 10 minutes early with an “immediate shutdown” command. That’s not cool.
March 21st, 2008 at 10:31 pm
I guess they chose easter thinking most people will be away
also when you go for the cheapest hosting you can find do you really expect the best service
sure they might have been able to do it quicker with multiple backup machines etc. but at what cost and how much complaining would be happening if they said hi guys we just spent a shit load of money to save you 12 hours of down time but we now need to increase prices 50% to pay for it.
think about it

https://panel.dreamhost.com/ is not opening ………. :~ :s
nd what about Web Server “electra” ..!! why electra also down :
March 21st, 2008 at 10:35 pm
At first I was like, Oh No! Why didn’t they warn me!
Then I remembered reading the announcement from last week, so I was fine. I mean, I like my website so I make sure that every so often I actually check out what’s going on with my host.
Dreamhost has its faults, but I’m happy here. If you’re losing money from your website, perhaps you should look at a better deal than $10 a month?
March 21st, 2008 at 10:35 pm
First SQL, Now our email server is down. At least the website can host a static page till DH get their act together. *sigh*
Its a shame these comments are turning into a free-for-all. I’m really unhappy about the fact that our servers (outside the affected clusters) are going down!
Moreso, I’m unhappy about the ridiculous comments on here - it would be useful to know if anyone outside of spunky/central are going down?? Less useful are the childish complaints and attacks!
*3 hours of unplanned, unnotified downtime & counting*
March 21st, 2008 at 10:37 pm
That’s simply because you are ignorant. Hosts do that all the time.
March 21st, 2008 at 10:40 pm
OMFG!!! This is happening everyday now, time to say goodbye to this fucking piece of shit host. Somebody should sue them for giving such a bad service. Dreamhost FUCK YOU!! I’m starting a blog against you so i can manage to make people stay away from you as many i can. again FUCK YOU DREAMHOST you are good for nothing.
March 21st, 2008 at 10:40 pm
well…. i guess i know which server i’m on now hahaha.
March 21st, 2008 at 10:40 pm
Read the affected servers carefully the DNS servers are on the list that means unless you use ip address all servers are affected in a round about way my site is not hosted on dreamhost but my url is a subdomain of a dreamhost hosted site so therefore my site is unreachable help if you understand how DNS works
March 21st, 2008 at 10:41 pm
I am sure some fat ass admin is reading these posts and laughing at our frustration and deleting all posts.
March 21st, 2008 at 10:41 pm
Oh yeah. That adds some serious class to an already rapidly deteriorating thread.
March 21st, 2008 at 10:41 pm
Shawn, obviously they have our e-mail addresses. They offer an RSS feed for issues, yes, but most of them do not involve a 12-hour downtime for our sites and e-mail. At minimum, they should offer an auto-email system for a certain severity of problem. In this case, a 12 hour downtime certainly applies. Sure, it is their choice to offer only a general purpose rss feed and blog site, and I could set up the rss feed to deliver e-mails but the fact of the matter is, I only want to be notified when things are going to be down for an extended duration. I don’t need to know that things might be shaky for 5 minutes here or 10 minutes there, and the reality is that it would be far easier for DreamHost to set something like that up for all of us than for me to write something that’ll scan the rss feed and only e-mail me when it identifies a high severity issue.
March 21st, 2008 at 10:41 pm
Well it’s annoying sure, and I’m loosing money. But these things happen.
March 21st, 2008 at 10:41 pm
Shut up Shawn, there is poop that needs to be wiped from your already soiled diapers.
12 hours…are you 100% serious?
March 21st, 2008 at 10:41 pm
God Damn! I am paying for tons of clicks on PPC and they all went to 404!!! You could adjust your warning systems and place a warning in the cpanel!!
March 21st, 2008 at 10:41 pm

i can visit my site now……
March 21st, 2008 at 10:46 pm
Why the constant bringing up of intelligence? Do you seriously think your intelligence is higher than those who have countered you? Some might argue that by replying to their messages actually shows pettiness and stupidity.
As for me, I don’t harp on about intellect and make no claims to possess any, for I am Mr Bean.
I repeat:
Shut up Shawn, there is poop that needs to be wiped from your already soiled diapers.
Love,
Mr Bean
March 21st, 2008 at 10:46 pm
can you imagine the number of posts if they did this in the middle of the day on say a wednesday
March 21st, 2008 at 10:47 pm
Ah…DH what a nice post-birthday present to give me…
Why?
Definitely considering switching hosts again after a major downtime with no warning like this. Could you at least tell us about these downtimes in emails or something?
March 21st, 2008 at 10:48 pm
Mr Bean, I admit defeat. You are a hundred percent correct and I apologise profusely for my behavior.
Really really sorry,
Shawnie Wawnie
March 21st, 2008 at 10:51 pm
Never claimed to be intelligent in the first place due to my identity of Mr Bean. Wait - I can do a mean parallel park in my Mini. I win!
March 21st, 2008 at 10:52 pm
LEAVE SHAWN ALONE!!! YOURE ALL JUST JEALOUS OF HIM NEWAYZ.
HAIL KING SHAWN!!
March 21st, 2008 at 10:53 pm
How totally unacceptable! Downtime like this definitely warrants email notification.
You shouldn’t have to monitor your host’s RSS feed to know your host has planned significant downtime.
I used to use Dreamhost for hosting — now I just use them for domain registration. Every time I come back I’m glad I switched.
March 21st, 2008 at 10:53 pm
Ok, pretending to post as someone else to win an argument is lame guys.
March 21st, 2008 at 10:54 pm
12 hours? Really? Whaaat the…h*ll?
March 21st, 2008 at 10:55 pm
HOLLA @ ShawnGirlFriend….yo biarch who do you think u are talking bout MY MAN like that. he is MY MAN dont you go messin wid MY MAN. Find yo own honey, honey.
March 21st, 2008 at 10:55 pm
Those that are too stupid to read RSS are also too stupid to change their name in the field while pretending to be others.
Are you sure you want to keep pretending you’re not a complete dumbass after that one? Because I’m pretty sure at this point, no one will believe it.
March 21st, 2008 at 10:56 pm
And we give a rats arse about your opinion because….?
March 21st, 2008 at 10:58 pm

March 21st, 2008 at 11:06 pm
Ugh… right when I go to begin promoting a blog… like literally - karma I guess…. bah - okay, please e-mail next time you have a major move - I also don’t check this site unless something goes down.
March 21st, 2008 at 11:11 pm
TETHYS IS ALSO DOWN
March 21st, 2008 at 11:12 pm
… and I obviously missed the email giving me a heads up for this so I could post something on my site. Thanks… Dreamhost, an email would have been great. All my emails (3 sites) are down and my site is losing business. I assume I’ll be given a credit for the time lost.
March 21st, 2008 at 11:13 pm
Some notice might have been nice? WTF?
March 21st, 2008 at 11:13 pm
Lol, nice one Bleaourgh
March 21st, 2008 at 11:14 pm
yeah dude… if not an email… how about a google calendar we can subscribe too.
this sucks. i have 7 sites. people are emailing me wicked.
UGH.
March 21st, 2008 at 11:16 pm
No I admitted that retards repeatedly try to be me when they quickly run out of material. Life will seem easier once you learn how to read.
Is that your idea of not trolling? I see your weak brain needed to reword my post, but you didn’t quite have the energy to pretend that you’re me. You must be another one that’s too lazy & stupid to grasp RSS.
It popped in my mind because I’m dealing with clueless idiots and they often end up working there. If you work there and it offended you, feel free to pretend I said McDonalds if that makes you feel better.
March 21st, 2008 at 11:17 pm
@45 Grey Hodge,
No, they did not tell us a week ago! It is not the CUSTOMER’S responsibility to check every day for 12 hour maintenances. Anything this long should have been communicated directly to us or had huge warnings put on our control panels.
March 21st, 2008 at 11:18 pm
FUCKING MOTHER FUCKING DREAMHOST!!! I DONT KNOW WHAT FUCKING JEWS OWN THIS COMPANY
March 21st, 2008 at 11:20 pm
Yes, they did tell you a week ago. And yes again, it is YOUR responsibility to stay up to date.
Do you need them to do all of your thinking for you, or just when it comes to something super hard like subscribing to an RSS feed.
Maybe they should also send smoke signals out, in case they have any Indian customers that can’t follow simple directions?
March 21st, 2008 at 11:21 pm
Why all of my websites hosted at Dreamhost are up? You can check http://www.kojakdirectory.com its up here
March 21st, 2008 at 11:21 pm
my site still down…. why
March 21st, 2008 at 11:21 pm
Ditto for all the comments on getting an email about something like this - I subscribe to the feed but somehow when I see “spunky cluster” it doesn’t ring any bells - I have to dig down through a big long list to see if it applies to me. Plus the post title should emphasize “12 hour outage coming!” that should get more people’s attention.
I think an option to get an email or text for any planned outage more than 1 hour should be provided.. It wouldn’t really cost them that much. Lets face it 12 hours is an instant downtime hit of 0.14% over a year. So for a huge number of customers DreamHost just blew any chance of 99.9% uptime for the next year - let alone 99.99% - that by anyones books is a major outage.
Oh well…
Even so I’m still a satisfied DreamHost customer.
March 21st, 2008 at 11:22 pm
damn you amusing comments
i need to sleep
March 21st, 2008 at 11:23 pm
Moschops: I’ll fuck your mother in her skull if you say you’re a fucking SATISFIED customer. Is that a fucking hosting which is always down EVERY NIGHT?
March 21st, 2008 at 11:23 pm
Shawn, get over your faux smartass RSS promo spiels. Not everyone cares to use RSS, let alone subscribe to any feed Dreamhost may supply. This fact ought to have been realised by DH and emails should have been sent out accordingly.
March 21st, 2008 at 11:23 pm
So, anyone got any recommendations for a good host?
March 21st, 2008 at 11:26 pm
Hi my name is Shawn and I’m a huge dumbass. Who wants to do me up the pooper?
March 21st, 2008 at 11:29 pm
Shawn and other fucking assholes, take your fight somewhere else and suck each other cocks or spoon each other, you fucking fags.
March 21st, 2008 at 11:30 pm
Is the site up yet?
March 21st, 2008 at 11:31 pm
This kind of sucks.
March 21st, 2008 at 11:33 pm
Seriously… I’m a busy guy, as many of you folks are. It shouldn’t be up to me to repeatedly check an RSS feed to see when my sites are going to be down. If I know a client’s site is going to be down, I need to be able to let them know… and I should be TOLD, not have to hunt for the Easter egg in RSS. How hard is a mass email? Man…
March 21st, 2008 at 11:35 pm
It is nice, when you compare it to your hobby, which is being one of those retards.
I can’t say that I’m surprised that nothing you said makes any sense.
You forgot to point out your useful contributions. I actually did contribute by telling some of the dumbasses to subscribe to the feed if they ever get tired of being clueless.
You’re just another moron that’s crying because you can’t be a little baby here and not get called out for it. Go cry on your mommy’s shoulder if you need to be comforted. It’s not going to happen here.
March 21st, 2008 at 11:37 pm
If you can’t be bothered with something that simple, then don’t pretend keeping your clients informed is even the least bit important. Ask your clients if they’re smart enough to subscribe to a feed, then let them open up their own accounts here and bypass your incompetence.
March 21st, 2008 at 11:39 pm
I agree about the email thing too…would have been nice.
@tara (#184): I’m on PS and my servers aren’t listed in the massive server list. Way more than “a handful” are affected by this… but with DH’s track record I fully expected it for my stuff.
@hex (#165): class action? hardly. try reading the TOS before you decide to talk lawsuit and accuse them of false advertising. It’s budget hosting, what do you expect. Their colo customers aren’t affected by this outage.
@Mike (#135) It would help if you actually read the note and understood DNS yourself. DH has (at least) three sets of DNS servers (primary, secondary, tertiary). Primary and Tertiary are being moved now, secondary is handling all the DNS duties. This is why your host will still resolve to an IP address, and again, non-shared-hosting customers’ sites still work.
March 21st, 2008 at 11:40 pm
OK… the numbers are messed up on that now… some comments have gone missing.
March 21st, 2008 at 11:41 pm
Dreamhost! I was performing cardiac surgery on the Vice President using my webpage and now it’s down and he’s dead. Thanks for not warning us at all! I’m starting an anti-dreamhost blog because that will certainly show you!
March 21st, 2008 at 11:42 pm
Well, it’s time to sit back and watch, “I Am Legend”. Overall, this is one of the few times that I’ve experienced any issues with DreamHost, so keep up the good work!!! I’ll most likely be answering complaints in the morning from my website members, but that’s part of running a business.
March 21st, 2008 at 11:44 pm
Shawn, you obvously need more business if you have the time to constantly check RSS feeds. What is easier, a push email or having to check RSS? Email is a constant for most, if not all of us. The volume of complaints in this forum suggest that you and your attitude are by far in the minority.
March 21st, 2008 at 11:44 pm
Anyone here seen “Shutter” ?
March 21st, 2008 at 11:45 pm
Guys anyone on Bazooka? My sites are still down, can somone on Bazooka reply?
March 21st, 2008 at 11:45 pm
@TTR the vast majority of the web servers are still down. Probably be several more hours.
March 21st, 2008 at 11:46 pm
Right on the money — and just to expand on that, read the TOS at ANY host. It’s not just a Dreamhost thing.
March 21st, 2008 at 11:48 pm
Thanks Keith for the update
March 21st, 2008 at 11:48 pm
@Shawn True. Again, this is budget service. If you’re expecting 99.9% uptime, it’s unlikely to happen over the course of a year.
March 21st, 2008 at 11:52 pm
I agree with many of the “posters” here. An e-mail would have been a nice courtesy. If I can receive an e-mail from Dreamhost regarding up coming “bill dues” - the least I can expect is an e-mail regarding up coming “server shut-downs”.
The only thing I really want to know is - when is the server coming back on? I have committments that I am required to uphold. I will be unable to follow through with these committments unless the server comes back on. Maybe this does not effect Dreamhost…but it effects MY BUSINESS!
If you cannot protect my business then how can you expect me to protect your business? I am paying you MONEY for a service that supplies my business. Tonight my business is at a stand still because of Dreamhost.
I am VERY displeased with your service right now.
Sincerely,
Jeri-Lyn McCrea
March 21st, 2008 at 11:53 pm
Today is absolutely a big day!!! In Taiwan, we have the 12th president election today. In US, my blog is moving to a new home now. Hope the cluster moving can be completed as soon as possible. I just voted for my ideal candidate this morning. And I’ll update the latest news and election result on my blog if the services is back.
Keep going and good luck!!!
March 21st, 2008 at 11:57 pm
@Jeri-Lyn: The original update (linked above) did say that it would be up to 12 hours.
March 21st, 2008 at 11:59 pm
FYI Dreamhost, if anyone is listening…it’s not just spunky that’s down, MYSQL is down on sites that are on different clusters.
As for the email requests - yes, that would be smart business. It’s really ridiculous to expect the average web user to even understand RSS much less have to subscribe to it to get a critical update. Just because someone has a website doesn’t mean they even known what RSS is. And no, that’s NOT the fault of the customer.
DH needs to respond to the needs of its customers, not remain in a techie fantasy utopia where people should use RSS. Most people DON’T use RSS. They use email. Send critical downtime alerts IN EMAIL.
It’s not like DH sends out a big warning email when you sign up that you MUST subscribe to RSS to know what’s going on. I found my way here by accident. I can guarantee you that my friends who use DH have no idea what’s going on right now.
March 22nd, 2008 at 12:04 am
Yep. Which isn’t even a really bad thing. If your site isn’t worth more than $5 - $10/month, the world probably won̵
