Spunky and Central Move

We’re about to begin to move the spunky cluster and our central machines. We’ll be taking down servers soon, but our status site, of course, will remain up and running.

Again, we’ll try to keep this move quick and painless as we possibly can, and we apologize for the inconvenience.

For more details on this, see the previous post here:
http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/2008/03/14/central-services-and-spunky-cluster-move/

UPDATE — Sat Mar 22 00:12:05 PDT 2008 –

Most central functions are back up. Dreamhost.com and panel.dreamhost.com are working again. We are currently working on webmail. The spunky cluster move is still underway. We’ll post more here later.

UPDATE — Sat Mar 22 02:45:26 PDT 2008 –

Webmail is up! 99% of all central services are functioning now. Spunky is 80% racked, more info on that to follow.

UPDATE — Sat Mar 22 03:40:27 PDT 2008 –

Spunky is coming up. We’re spotchecking and fixing troubled file, web, and mail servers. We’ll sound an all when all is clear… We will likely be firefighting for the next few hours.

UPDATE — Sat Mar 22 06:01:28 PDT 2008 –

Spunky is still coming up, we’re dealing with a couple of machines that didn’t survive the move and some more cleanup stuff. We’ll keep you posted as things progress!

UPDATE — Sat Mar 22 07:04:35 PDT 2008 –

We have noticed a problem with some of our networks. They seemingly did not make the jump to the new router and we are looking into that. Any websites with IP addresses that look like either 64.111.xxx.xxx or 208.113.xxx.xxx are down to the outside world right now. The machines themselves are up so as soon as the networks are working again they’ll begin working immediately.

UPDATE — Sat Mar 22 09:55:54 PDT 2008 –

The networking problem has been resolved with our network provider so as of right now all services should be up and running. If anything is not working, please open a new support message from our web panel.

    Holden Says:

I really would have appreciated an email notification. Couldn’t you guys have at least put it in the Dreamhost newsletter? That’s just inconsiderate to your customers…I’m not going to switch hosting services because Dreamhost has been great to me in the past, but this really sucks.

    Tarkan Says:

Looks like everyone who’s sites are on the servers involved in the move have their sites back up - but all the people who’s sites where not meant to be effected are still down.

This out of order in a big way!!!

  8. 458
    Kris Says:

Getting close guys — but my sites think the date is 12/31/01!

Better a wrong date then NO sites up.

    Daniel M. Clark Says:

I don’t know where I’ll end up yet because I’ve just started looking for a new host this morning - I haven’t needed to look for a new one for over two years, so I need to figure out what everyone’s current reputation is.

Shawn: fuck you. You don’t know me. You don’t know what I do. I’m not up for paying a hundred bucks a month, or more, for dedicated hosting yet, but that doesn’t mean I’m not making money. I’m not rolling in dough - yet - but it’s not an insignificant amount. So, fuck you. Get your head out of DH’s ass. I can’t believe you’ve wasted as much time as you have simply insulting members who are affected by this. You offer no solutions, no helpful advice, nothing of any value to anyone. Go crawl back under the rock you were spawned from and let the grown-ups talk.

For the record, there are some things that can’t be argued. While I understand that shared hosting has risks and that downtime is to be expected, companies advertise 99.9% uptime. That’s 9 hours a year. My DH sites have been down for 24 hours this year. In fact, DH is one of the few sites that doesn’t advertise an uptime figure… they can’t, of course, because they have ridiculous amounts of downtime.

Defend that, Shawn. Better yet, don’t bother. I’m going out for a few hours, and I expect my sites will be up by this afternoon and I’ll have my recommendations for a new host that I requested from the groups I’m a part of. I expect I’ll not need to check the status here, so enjoy living in your own little world. I’ll not need to visit it again.

WTF? Don’t you people at nightmarehost actually notify customers when you are going to take down large portions of your customers ahead of time anymore? You guys are really starting to suck!

  14. 464
    Daniel M. Clark Says:

Incidentally, regarding RSS - real companies don’t rely on one avenue of communication with the customers. Real companies post a message to the RSS feed, send out an email, and mention upcoming planned outages in the monthly newsletter. DH chose, this time, to post only to the RSS feed, which is probably the least-used method by the customers.

Don’t insult the customers by saying we’re all dumbasses for not subscribing to the feed and checking it daily, just admit that DH is fucking stupid for not utilizing all the available methods of communication. It’s not like it costs a million bucks to send out a goddamn email AND post to the RSS feed. There is NO reason not to do both. NONE.

  21. 471
    Arksun Says:

Shawn, Actually they do. Nowhere is it written in some holy ‘law of businesses online’ that one MUST pay for a dedicated server host for their business.

And when other similar sites offer the same deal, but with potentially less downtime, guess what, the one with better service wins.

Clearly you’re very defensive of Dreamhost to the point of being a fanboy troll, which is rather sad and pathetic.

Don’t get me wrong, despite this problem on the whole I personally am still happy with Dreamhosts deal, but fanboys like you give us DreamHost appreciaters a bad name, resorting to personal insults and calling people idiots that don’t understand real business. I can only assume you must be a teenager still as I find it hard to think an adult would conduct himself in the way you have in the comments.

*waits for the obligatory childish response back*

On a side note, email seems to be up again (though test email I send earlier has yet to be delivered), but all sites still down.

rexford is still down. It was down late last night too. I have local backups for non-static files so I can deal with a restore from backup. I’m glad this is on a weekend and not during regular business hours when I need my site up. I may have to look for a backup site so that I can access my pages when Dreamhost is down. It doesn’t happen very often but it is an annoyance.

zeus in Janky Cluster and rootbeer in Spunky both still dead, mail working fine though. Seeing as Janky isn’t listed for a move I’m guessing this would be a central ip routing problem.

I’ve decided the folks here with a brain need to get together over coffee/a beer/whatever and laugh at the folks like this:

After the credit card charge nonsense, you’ve made a huge mistake by not thinking of sending out a warning email.

One has absolutely nothing to do with the other.

Why are you idiots still making us pay for your service?

You’re paying for a service you’re not happy with and think they’re the idiots?!

Keep sending those payments. You’ll show them! Maybe throw in an extra $50 on next month’s bill to show them you really mean business.

    - Chalk one up for Shaun (er.. make that two)

Ah well. My mail server still isn’t up, but that seems to be cluster wide. Other than that, I’m online.

    badMike Says:

Yeah, this is starting to get frustrating. My site’s still down. I’m not angry because I’m losing all those Adsense millions that could be rolling in (yeah, right), but this is a really long time to be down and it’s the second time in just a couple weeks. I just want people to read my site. It’s not just a “hey, I have a blog,” site and even if it were (thanks for the condescension, jerks) this would still be annoying since yes, people become attached to their websites.

And email notification would be nice in these instances. Dreamhost can just send it from a non-reply-able address, so they don’t get bombarded by angry hate mail, which is why I assume they don’t do that.

  39. 489

My site is still down. Has been since about 10:30pm EST last night. Bad timing since it’s a group that just switched over from Yahoo to forum format. Change is tough for some people, and this is like a nail in the coffin for them. Could even make the board fail after a strong start up.

    Shawn Says:

Shawn, Actually they do. Nowhere is it written in some holy ‘law of businesses online’ that one MUST pay for a dedicated server host for their business.

I never said anything had to be dedicated. You can pretty much hit near 100% uptime with two shared accounts & failover for hardly any money. If people can\’t do that, then they\’re site isn\’t the least bit important. Period.

Even two crappy 99.5% hosts aren\’t likely to be down at the same time. This has been explained more than once here.

And when other similar sites offer the same deal, but with potentially less downtime, guess what, the one with better service wins.

Dreamhost does, because you whiners are here and aren\’t going anywhere. Any other tough questions?

Clearly you’re very defensive of Dreamhost to the point of being a fanboy troll, which is rather sad and pathetic.

Right, anyone that is too stupid to figure out RSS, or doesn\’t cry like a 3 year old non-stop, must be a fanboy. And of course, those that do cry non-stop and get stumped on the most basic things, are real geniuses and definitely not pathetic at all.

Thanks for clearing that up. You\’re really smart!

but fanboys like you give us DreamHost appreciaters a bad name

If I can give you a bad name, then you didn\’t have much of a good one to start with.

I can only assume you must be a teenager still as I find it hard to think an adult would conduct himself in the way you have in the comments.

Are you saying that only teenagers can tell that you\’re an idiot? I\’d have to disagree because I\’m not one and I can tell.

*waits for the obligatory childish response back*

Try being honest for once. You knew what you were saying was stupid and you knew you were going to get called out for it. Those disclaimers are as meaningless as when a troll says \”I\’m not a troll but…\” then goes on to demonstrate exactly what defines a troll.

Ooooh, lemme try lemme try! Why put any thought into anything when I can just put something retarded like this:

*waits for yet another clueless reply that will contain nothing useful, yet refer to others as trolls*

Wow, you recycled the same joke for a fifth time and didn\’t get any laughs for a fifth time. I\’ll bet that even a retard like you will be able to pick up that pattern after a few hundred more times.

Go buy some more domains. Especially if you think I\’m a sockpuppet, which would likely mean that my name isn\’t really shawn.

It\’s cute that retards that can\’t afford to keep their sites up, buy multiple throwaway domains while doing their crying about downtime.

What is going on with these two remaining networks that are unreachable from the outside world? It’s like they forgot to publish two ASN’s.

I learned all about ASN’s while getting my technology education at ITT Tech. ITT Technical Institute prepared me with real world skills and I am now making $45,000 a year in the high-tech internet industry!

    For fucks sake…..

The router config issue a few weeks back cost me about $60, and this f’n disaster is running me $300 or so and counting.

Prior to that, DH had only borked me once in 2007…..in the range of about $50.

I think it’s time to explore my other options.
