Spunky and Central Move

We’re about to begin to move the spunky cluster and our central machines. We’ll be taking down servers soon, but our status site, of course, will remain up and running.

Again, we’ll try to keep this move quick and painless as we possibly can, and we apologize for the inconvenience.

For more details on this, see the previous post here:
http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/2008/03/14/central-services-and-spunky-cluster-move/

UPDATE — Sat Mar 22 00:12:05 PDT 2008 –

Most central functions are back up. Dreamhost.com and panel.dreamhost.com are working again. We are currently working on webmail. The spunky cluster move is still underway. We’ll post more here later.

UPDATE — Sat Mar 22 02:45:26 PDT 2008 –

Webmail is up! 99% of all central services are functioning now. Spunky is 80% racked, more info on that to follow.

UPDATE — Sat Mar 22 03:40:27 PDT 2008 –

Spunky is coming up. We’re spotchecking and fixing troubled file, web, and mail servers. We’ll sound an all when all is clear… We will likely be firefighting for the next few hours.

UPDATE — Sat Mar 22 06:01:28 PDT 2008 –

Spunky is still coming up, we’re dealing with a couple of machines that didn’t survive the move and some more cleanup stuff. We’ll keep you posted as things progress!

UPDATE — Sat Mar 22 07:04:35 PDT 2008 –

We have noticed a problem with some of our networks. They seemingly did not make the jump to the new router and we are looking into that. Any websites with IP addresses that look like either 64.111.xxx.xxx or 208.113.xxx.xxx are down to the outside world right now. The machines themselves are up so as soon as the networks are working again they’ll begin working immediately.

UPDATE — Sat Mar 22 09:55:54 PDT 2008 –

The networking problem has been resolved with our network provider so as of right now all services should be up and running. If anything is not working, please open a new support message from our web panel.

Well, I guess I can stay up for a few more hours in order to send this email that has to go out tonight… at least I’ve got some caffeine. o_o And at least I can sleep in tomorrow.

    Michael VanDeMar Says:

Melissa, it’s a 12 hour downtime that only started 2 hours ago. You might need more coffee. ;)

    bob Says:

Are you fucking kidding me? 12 hours of downtime?! Without warning?!?!

I believe dreamhost has a 99.9% uptime guarantee. 12 hours down in a year is already below that guarantee (and that’s being generous, it really should be measured per month).

You guys need to send emails before something like this, and give plenty of time for everyone to get ready. Also, don’t do this shit at 10pm on a Friday - any self-respecting host would do this in the wee hours of Sunday morning when the country is asleep.

This is absolutely outrageous, and I expect a refund for this kind of service.

    Greg Says:

    1) If there’s a problem be proactive. Send me an email. Don’t expect I have time to check your service blog every week.
    2) Planning for downtime is a plan for failure. Instead you should have planned how to make the move with minimal or no down-time.
    3) You have thousands of sites hosted on these servers and perhaps millions of visitors that have no idea why a particular site is offline. I can deal with the outage because I know what’s going on but all my visitors don’t get that benefit. The least you could do is put up a maintenance note for all these sites that are offline.
    4) Having dreamhost.com itself offline is a kick-in the face to anyone trying to figure out why their site is down.

    Louis St-Amour Says:

If they couldn’t keep a backup online, could they at least redirect requests to a “we’ll be back online soon” page?

James: I drive a Toyota, lol. It’s been running just fine since 1992 with little issue. If one comes up, I get it repaired and go on about my life. I don’t go to my mechanic, sit in the lobby and bitch about how much it’s depriving the world of my ability to drive.

That’s the difference between you and I. :) Get it?

    Buy Snap On Tools Says:

Using an RSS or an email alert is, as many of you point out, a personal choice. You chose to use email, fine. That’s your choice. DH uses an RSS alert system, that’s their choice. If you don’t like it, fine, go somewhere else that does use email alerts for downtime rather than RSS.

I don’t like getting letters in the mail; I hate leaving voice mail. That doesn’t stop important letters that I MUST deal with from coming to my mail box. I still have to leave voice mail for my employees as to their instructions for the week.

Don’t like something, tough. Deal with it or move on.

    Welcome to life.

    almondj Says:

does that explain why my site has been in and out then?

or could it be due to the 500,000 successful page reqs. in about 8 days, or 1.4 million all together? (slight brag.)

  10. 110
    Michael VanDeMar Says:

Someone shouldn’t have to subscribe to a feed where 99% of the fucking posts won’t apply to them just to ensure that they can see one message that should be highlighted and sent directly to them, and it’s more than a little ignorant to suggest that they should.

  11. 111
    Josh Wolf Says:

For me, the thing is this: I can live without my website being up, but the fact that my e-mail is down and I didn’t realize it ahead of time is no laughing matter. Dreamhost has been an excellent company in the past, though they have made several minor screw-ups in the time they’ve managed my hosting, but this sort of thing is unacceptable without them taking responsibility for the mess, promising they wont let it happen again without a mass-mailing beforehand and off an apology to all of us.

  12. 112
    Keith Says:

The only complaint I have is that the note they posted a week ago said that the outage would begin at 9pm, and they started it 10 minutes early with an “immediate shutdown” command. That’s not cool.

  13. 113
    Mike Says:

I guess they chose easter thinking most people will be away
also when you go for the cheapest hosting you can find do you really expect the best service
sure they might have been able to do it quicker with multiple backup machines etc. but at what cost and how much complaining would be happening if they said hi guys we just spent a shit load of money to save you 12 hours of down time but we now need to increase prices 50% to pay for it.

    think about it

    https://panel.dreamhost.com/ is not opening ………. :~ :s

nd what about Web Server “electra” ..!! why electra also down :

  15. 115
    Leo Says:

At first I was like, Oh No! Why didn’t they warn me!

Then I remembered reading the announcement from last week, so I was fine. I mean, I like my website so I make sure that every so often I actually check out what’s going on with my host.

Dreamhost has its faults, but I’m happy here. If you’re losing money from your website, perhaps you should look at a better deal than $10 a month?

  16. 116
    Singa Says:

First SQL, Now our email server is down. At least the website can host a static page till DH get their act together. *sigh*

Its a shame these comments are turning into a free-for-all. I’m really unhappy about the fact that our servers (outside the affected clusters) are going down!

Moreso, I’m unhappy about the ridiculous comments on here - it would be useful to know if anyone outside of spunky/central are going down?? Less useful are the childish complaints and attacks!

*3 hours of unplanned, unnotified downtime & counting*

  17. 117
    Michael VanDeMar Says:

I don’t see why they should apologize for moving the servers to a more reliable data center, which cannot be done without downtime.

That’s simply because you are ignorant. Hosts do that all the time.

  18. 118
    FuckYouDreamHost Says:

OMFG!!! This is happening everyday now, time to say goodbye to this fucking piece of shit host. Somebody should sue them for giving such a bad service. Dreamhost FUCK YOU!! I’m starting a blog against you so i can manage to make people stay away from you as many i can. again FUCK YOU DREAMHOST you are good for nothing.

  19. 119
    judi Says:

well…. i guess i know which server i’m on now hahaha.

  20. 120
    Mike Says:

Read the affected servers carefully the DNS servers are on the list that means unless you use ip address all servers are affected in a round about way my site is not hosted on dreamhost but my url is a subdomain of a dreamhost hosted site so therefore my site is unreachable help if you understand how DNS works

  21. 121
    FuckYouDreamHost Says:

I am sure some fat ass admin is reading these posts and laughing at our frustration and deleting all posts.

  22. 122
    Michael VanDeMar Says:

Shawn is a fat nerd who has never had sex. He likes to wear nappies and be called a naughty baby… Post this in 10 dreamhost support threads or he will come to your house at night and poop in his pants.

Oh yeah. That adds some serious class to an already rapidly deteriorating thread. :D

  23. 123
    Josh Wolf Says:

Shawn, obviously they have our e-mail addresses. They offer an RSS feed for issues, yes, but most of them do not involve a 12-hour downtime for our sites and e-mail. At minimum, they should offer an auto-email system for a certain severity of problem. In this case, a 12 hour downtime certainly applies. Sure, it is their choice to offer only a general purpose rss feed and blog site, and I could set up the rss feed to deliver e-mails but the fact of the matter is, I only want to be notified when things are going to be down for an extended duration. I don’t need to know that things might be shaky for 5 minutes here or 10 minutes there, and the reality is that it would be far easier for DreamHost to set something like that up for all of us than for me to write something that’ll scan the rss feed and only e-mail me when it identifies a high severity issue.

Why the constant bringing up of intelligence? Do you seriously think your intelligence is higher than those who have countered you? Some might argue that by replying to their messages actually shows pettiness and stupidity.

As for me, I don’t harp on about intellect and make no claims to possess any, for I am Mr Bean.

    I repeat:

Shut up Shawn, there is poop that needs to be wiped from your already soiled diapers.

    Why? :-(

Definitely considering switching hosts again after a major downtime with no warning like this. Could you at least tell us about these downtimes in emails or something?

  31. 131

Mr Bean, I admit defeat. You are a hundred percent correct and I apologise profusely for my behavior.

How totally unacceptable! Downtime like this definitely warrants email notification.

You shouldn’t have to monitor your host’s RSS feed to know your host has planned significant downtime.

I used to use Dreamhost for hosting — now I just use them for domain registration. Every time I come back I’m glad I switched.

Those that are too stupid to read RSS are also too stupid to change their name in the field while pretending to be others.

Are you sure you want to keep pretending you’re not a complete dumbass after that one? Because I’m pretty sure at this point, no one will believe it.

    Shawn Says:

Shawn did you just admit to repeatedly trolling DH support threads?

No I admitted that retards repeatedly try to be me when they quickly run out of material. Life will seem easier once you learn how to read.

Nice. I guess flipping burgers is a step up from your own pastimes. Judging from Burger King being the first thing you thought off I guess there’s not much else to do when you’re too fat to get out the house…

Is that your idea of not trolling? I see your weak brain needed to reword my post, but you didn’t quite have the energy to pretend that you’re me. You must be another one that’s too lazy & stupid to grasp RSS.

It popped in my mind because I’m dealing with clueless idiots and they often end up working there. If you work there and it offended you, feel free to pretend I said McDonalds if that makes you feel better.
