Migrating bellflower to new hardware
It looks like bellflower was a casualty from last night’s move. Currently one of our senior techs is working on failing it over to new hardware now. It shouldn’t take any longer than 30 to 45 minutes to complete the move (unless something goes horribly awry) and make sure everything is plugging along again. We’ll be sure to keep you up to date as things persist.
All fixed - Bellflower is on much newer/better hardware now too as that was one of our older shared hosting machines (just a fortunate positive side effect of the failover).

Never goes as smoothly as you’d like, does it?
March 22nd, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Poor Bellflower! I know a friend on that cluster. XD Hope nothing goes wrong.
March 22nd, 2008 at 1:42 pm
Sorry dudes, my bad! I spilled my beer all over that one just before I passed out!

How about nilla guys? WTF is up with that?
nilla notice Your web server has been rebooted in the last week. help
nilla notice Your web server did not respond to our tests. help
It’s pretty crappy that you can’t have the courtesty to let the people that pay your salaries know that the severs are down! Now, we have to go through all this shit and hassles to find out ourselves. It’s such a wonderful thing to wake up to. I guess you simply don’t like communicating with people in a way that doesn’t make THEM go out of their way. It’s time to move on. Between the lame half assed you initially handled the payment fiasco and this, I’m DONE! Good bye!

Dear Dreamhost: All our sites are out!
March 23rd, 2008 at 6:34 am
mcclure has been down for the last 1.5 hours. I lose track of what the heck is supposed to be working at Dreamhost now. Well, web is down but shell is up for that server.
March 23rd, 2008 at 6:49 am
Okay mcclure just came back up.
Uptime Scout by Integrio is a handy piece of software. A little Windows app which sits in the system tray checking the availability of one or more websites every 5 mins by default.
March 23rd, 2008 at 7:38 am
Ours still down–can’t remember what server it is.
March 23rd, 2008 at 9:26 am
And still down.
March 23rd, 2008 at 11:36 am
Gimli. It’s been down all day…
March 23rd, 2008 at 12:22 pm
These posts and update are excellent! I never have any issues as your hosting is always good to me. Most hosts have problems and never put up any info on what where and how long. Kudos to your team!

March 23rd, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Our sites all crashed again.
March 23rd, 2008 at 7:26 pm
It’s great how you put our accounts on new hardware if something goes wrong.
March 23rd, 2008 at 8:01 pm
sites are down..
March 23rd, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Sites still down.
March 23rd, 2008 at 8:49 pm
From header:
(Please remember, posting in the comments here IS NOT an official way to contact DreamHost.)
I guess some people failed basic reading (Hi John)
Use the support ticket system and quit whining here.
March 23rd, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Was the Jabber server service affected by the swap-over? It seems that federation to MSN and/or AIM is broken. All of my contacts vanished in iChat…
March 23rd, 2008 at 9:30 pm
Last night and tonight website/ftp mega slooooowwwww. Great timing when trying to launch new sites. Funny thing is that the servers I’m dealing with aren’t in the effected list far as I can tell…but I’ve had that happen before.
March 23rd, 2008 at 10:31 pm
Xkeeper, I’m letting people know that Dreamhost treats customers of eight years like their data is disposable. Go fuck yourself.
March 23rd, 2008 at 10:40 pm
(Specifically, I’ve been handing in support tickets since 8 a.m., only to receive useless responses about how the problem has been solved, and everything should be fine if I clear my browser cache. When, in fact, our entire file server is hosed, the directories are suddenly empty, and the shell returns I/O errors that I would expect to see on a Commodore Vic-20, not Dreamhost.)
March 24th, 2008 at 2:40 am
I’m sure your data isn’t deleted John. This thread is for the Bellflower server (which works) and not for your server (which you know already). Before passing out the “Go fuck yourself”s you might first learn to read, then follow the extremely simple instructions and protocols for reporting issues. Instructions of which you should be well aware if we’re to believe you’ve been here for 8 years.
March 24th, 2008 at 4:59 am
My support tickets for the mcclure server being down haven’t been answered for nearly 24 hours. Hard to see where the 24/7 support is.
March 24th, 2008 at 5:40 am
We’re all DOOOOMMMEEEEDD (still) !!!!!
March 24th, 2008 at 6:23 am
Sites are still down, any forecast? When are they back to normal?
March 24th, 2008 at 6:26 am

March 24th, 2008 at 6:28 am

March 24th, 2008 at 6:34 am

March 24th, 2008 at 7:26 am

March 24th, 2008 at 7:29 am
Re #17: MSN & AIM jabber transports are fine. I just had to load up PSI and re-register with them.
BTW, thanks for the upgrade — website seems quicker now.
March 24th, 2008 at 7:33 am
Hey . Our sites are down now .
Please . Thanks for every time you help me .
March 24th, 2008 at 7:35 am
My site is down for 5 hours…. what´s happening ??
I am on popinski.
March 24th, 2008 at 8:00 am
“Xkeeper, I’m letting people know that Dreamhost treats customers of eight years like their data is disposable. Go fuck yourself.”
Funny, I usually treat the CS people with some respect and do what I can to help them figure out what’s going wrong, and even though my sites are down almost once or twice a week lately (although getting better), they do what they can to resolve the problems.
If you’re being this much of a dick to them, I’m not suprised if they treat you a little less kindly.
March 24th, 2008 at 8:21 am
All mine are down (rodeo) argh…………….
(and yes, did a support ticket)
But these kind of unreported downages along with the reported ones
are making me consider switching too..
Is this much downtime a violation of their TOS?

Same here, on agnus. It appears that the server itself is running but there’s no home directory (can’t telnet or ftp either). I don’t know that this is an issue with Bellflower, but there don’t appear to be any other unresolved outages listed anywhere. At least mail is working, so I’m not entirely out of business, but it is fairly annoying nonetheless. I’ve only been with DH for two months and, despite the fact that I dig the way things work overall (when they do work) there have been far too many interruptions already for me to be confident with adding any more clients.
I also submitted a support ticket.

Dear Dreamhost,
I am developing a drupal site using my dreamhost server. Super slow!!! This is really pissing me off. I have a huge deadline and this server configuration issue just made my stress level twice as much as it should be.
As much as I like dreamhost, I am really thinking about an alternative. This is killing me.
March 24th, 2008 at 10:42 am
This is humiliating me at work. I absolutely can’t believe how bad this has become. My new sites haven’t been running at a proper speed consistently since we started the new account!
March 24th, 2008 at 10:45 am
And yes, I have to MAJORLY agree with some comments here… WHY AREN’T PROBLEMS BEING POSTED ON THE STATUS? That’s starting to be insulting.
March 24th, 2008 at 11:34 am
That blurb came from when I was about to put in a ticket.
I’m missing the part where this issue is posted on the status site.
March 24th, 2008 at 11:45 am
@ William Teach - Sounds like this one http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/2008/03/19/filer-problems-with-blingy-cluster/
March 24th, 2008 at 11:54 am
Yup, you’re right. They should post a new post on it.
March 24th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
I do agree that there should be a new post about this issue. My sites located on Brandine have been done for close to 2 days now. I sent in a ticket (2 times, actually) and got a generic auto-response saying that the service had returned.. for a while. It’s still down.
March 24th, 2008 at 9:13 pm
screw posts, why can’t that shit just stay up? i’ve been recommending all of my clients to dreamhost for the past three years…no more. it’s embarrassing. strange too, the problems have only been in the last year or so…everything went smoot for the first couple. oh well, that’s business i guess.
March 24th, 2008 at 9:18 pm
smoot i say!
March 24th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
My site is so slow. Fucking shit guys! I paid for an entire year and this was supposed to be one of the best hosting options.
Please get DH get these problems fixed ASAP.
I have told so many of my friends to sign up here and now I wish I didn’t.
Good luck to everyone else!
Fuck!
March 25th, 2008 at 7:04 am

March 25th, 2008 at 8:37 am
Is 3-5 minutes too long to wait for my webmail to refresh? or a msg to open? or to do anything?? I can crap faster than that!
March 25th, 2008 at 9:07 am
I don´t believe that my site is down again >:-(
i am on popinski.
March 25th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
Dreamhost Web Panel is down : https://panel.dreamhost.com/
March 25th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
Dear everyone,
Dreamhost doesn’t read these comments. It’s a hollow sounding off board for you to vent, but it really serves no purpose. Please stop addressing Dreamhost directly as if they read this. They do not.
Love,
Captain Obvious.
March 25th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
I am with DI Jim — I have actually gotten two best friends to sign up with Dreamhost — they do shelled out the year in advance to get the better deal … now I am probably gonna get some flack for it, as one is using the site for business.
I am hoping for the best.
March 27th, 2008 at 7:25 pm
considering another hosting site. This sucks.
April 7th, 2008 at 5:23 pm
I agree that the downtime can cause some problems when you referred friends to Dreamhost. Its those face to face referrals that are bad.
April 19th, 2008 at 5:20 am
Thanks for this, I’d complained about the speed of bellflower in the past. I’d noticed an improvement recently and have only just spotted this.
