Problem with central services (panel, webmail, etc..) and spunky cluster
Posted (March 25th, 2008 at 1:12 pm PST) by jordanWe are currently experiencing problems with one of our internal firewall machines that is causing problems with our central services connecting to our customer database. This problem is expected to be fixed within 20 minutes, we apologize for the trouble and will update this post as soon as it is resolved or more information becomes available as to the cause.
UPDATE 2:40 PM PDT **
Problems with central services have been resolved. Panel , webmail and other central services should be working as usual. There are still a few problems with the spunky clusters that may be causing outages for customers websites/ftp. These problems are also being fixed at this time and this post will be updated when those are fixed.
UPDATE 4:39 PM PDT **
All of the networking problems and spunky cluster problems have been resolved. We apologize again for the outage and if you are still having trouble feel free to contact support with the service you are having problems with.
UPDATE 5:11 PM PDT **
There have been reports of problems with the spunky cluster , we will re-open this status post until we have more information to what caused this problem. If you are on the spunky cluster and are experiencing downtime it is still due to the networking issue.

I have a funny story that I keep wanting to tell you folks: I had problems BEFORE I EVEN PAID FOR HOSTING!!
They wouldn’t even let me sign up!
Let’s see how long it takes for the whining masses to start filling the comment log, eh?
You something’s up when dreamhoststatus.com is down… and the web panel is down… and mail…
exciting, always exciting and new with dreamhost-dont wanna jump on the grumble wagon-so just a lil (grumble)
Huh. I hadn’t noticed, since I’m so busy moving my clients to other hosting providers… DreamHost you’ve blown it so, so badly this time. Bye-bye.
OMG SUICIDE IN 15 MINUTES
Webmail’s gone from ponderously slow to not working at all over the last 24 hours. Dreamhoststatus.com was down when I checked, and same with my DreamHost control panel. It’s not funny anymore people.
Anyone having problems with the mail server independent of webmail?
This problem showed up for me as an inability to send mail normally, or connect to webmail. Just FYI.
thanks for the prompt update!
i noticed there was a wee problem and popped here, there wasnt anything listed, so i refreshed and here it was!
On the ball as usual
goodluck & hope it goes smoothly
Coincidental that this happened as I was migrating a site AWAY from Dreamhost! Oh well.
Great.
I was just updating my website, then its gone. *sigh*
SSH to alondra is also down, apparently.
I noticed a wee problem too, my entire site is down….
Since the Data center move, my site has been horrifically slow when trying to access anything on a DB.
Guatafak !!!!
Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Too many connections in /usr/local/squirrelmail-1.4.9a/plugins/dreamhost_virtualhosts/setup.php on line 278

I’m glad to have a speedy response (once the blog came back up.).
So long as what I told my client (20 minutes) is OK, or another update is posted, this is what I ask for.
Down again. Glad to hear it should be fixed quickly.
10 MINUTES LEFT
I’m not getting anywhere with the Spunky cluster either, so I suspect the issues go beyond just central services at the moment. Running a trace shows dropped packets and very long hops at the DreamHost end of the line, so it may be network related.
site was down for 12 hrs yesterday, and 3 today
I’m coming to the conclusion that there is a problem between the web cluster and the db cluster.
The funny thing is that just before my site went down I noticed it was running about 3 times faster than usual….I guess that’s what I get for thinking dreamhost did something right for once…
Glad, this week i’ve received around 100 mails from web monitor report about my websites down
SSH to Abbazaba is shit too… as are all my websites… I was uploading a new copy of one of my GPL programs, and POP… dropped to a crawl. Hope we work this out soon, DH… sometimes this stuff is amusing, but it is getting a little irritating now. (and it’s difficult to irritate me.
Figure it out, please.
Matt
I’m coming to the conclusion that Dreamhost needs to get its act together.
OK, this has gone too far. I’m registering with Hostgator and we’ll see how things go. Scheduled downtime like last weekend is one thing, but this random downtime getting really tiring.
Last night my sites were painstakingly slow. Now they are down. What a friggin’ surprise. Time to start looking for a new provided. I’m so sick of this crap.
my website http://www.kejut.com is also down.
yesterday my database server is also down.
Hope that all the incoming mail is queued to go out and doesn’t just disappear.
3 days ago my website server got moved too and it was down for about 10hours.
thanks again! you guys really sort of suck.
my email is on blingy… i’ve been unable to receive mail for my entire operation for two days… It’d be nice to know when we can expect to be able to use email again for those of us on blingy.
Thanks guys for the warning, I was right in the middle of a blog post I can always count on DreamHose.
dang…i was going to pay my bill too…
Hey, this looks more “major” than “medium.” Not just webmails and panel–sites are down. Update, please!!!!
Good luck getting it up. You always get it up in a timely maner.
People dont complain so much, we have all crashed our fair share of things.
yeah i’m the ..th
yeah i’m the 42nd
I was actually opening the panel to test switching one of my accounts to use Google Apps so I get more reliable e-mail service with better spam filtering. Looks like I’ll have to wait…
And yes, if you don’t know, you can use Gmail’s functionality (including IMAP) with your custom domains. More info here: http://www.google.com/a/help/intl/en/index.html
I still love dreamhost for the cheap hosting though…
I knew this before they posted it when mail went down….then I tried to come here and the status page was down. I thought this was supposed to be a completely different service? Why does it crash when everything else does??? Ridiculous!!!
I got this: “You are posting comments too quickly. Slow down.”
This is the place for the infiniteloop waiting for the interrupt from DH (when my site is back)
I’m a new dreamhost customer now for almost 4 weeks. And all of the 4 weeks have been poor performance issues on my web site. I left Ipowerweb for this.
jesus fucking christ!!!!! how many fucking times are you guys going to go down????
You get what you pay for.
My experience has been the same with other hosts in this price range, that offer similar flexibility. It’s the hosts that make you pay for every site you host that actually stay up 99.9% of the time. The question is, do you want to pay $150 a year per site? No thanks. I’ll just have two of these (dreamhost) type of hosts, and change dns servers when one goes down.
none of my 4 sites work, this is crazy. Will someone set up a status page so we can look and see why our sites are working occasionally - this site’s becoming more popular than google for my right now.
Does anyone know of another service that has similar pricing (as DH) but is more stable? This is getting unbearable!
It’s been 20 mins now…
what happened with dreamhost… i’m disappointed…
あいうえお -> this is a i u e o in japanese hiragana.
maybe it is useful for you to memorize it while waiting your site to back up.
15 minutes…
mediatemple
Meh…$100 a year what do you expect? I’m not upset about it. Shit happens. If I was hosting something of major importance other than my personal sites, I’d be happy to pay more money for more reliability.
This is from DH’s Shell:
[limbo-spunky4]$ lynx kejut.com
Looking up kejut.com first
Looking up kejut.com
Making HTTP connection to kejut.com
Alert!: Unable to connect to remote host.
lynx: Can’t access startfile http://kejut.com/
My bad. My uber site brought down the man! $this->flee();
This is goddamn ridiculous.
Soon Pls!!!
It’s not just webmail and the panel, my whole site is down. Weirdly, I just was able to ftp to it, but that’s it.
First the webmail, now all my websites ares down. DH, please do something quickly!
anhosting, same price, same stability. (Actually, might be a little worse, if you can believe that.)
1and1.com - Moved 4 new clients - no issues…
OK. Any suggestions for reasonably priced shared hosting that is reliable? . After 18 months with DH, I finally give up. I guess their cheap pricing matches the quality of their product.
2 Peter 3:8b “…a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day” Translated: 20 minutes = ALL DAY!
20 minutes huh? Ri-ight.
I going to change the name of my web site to Cannot find server.
All my sites are down, too. Second time this week, and I can’t connect to report it. How can this be “medium” severity?
To Mace:
It so happens I have two hosting companies also.. I still have Ipowerweb and now DreamHost.. They’re both fucked.. I can’t possibly go for a third one LOL.
Christ - I was in the middle of a transaction - no the customer is *poof* vanished into dreamhost hell! - If all my sites didn’t have so many frikkin DB’s…. no more DH, no more…
This is getting ridiculous. I haven’t used my space in awhile and as soon as I start using it again nothing but problems.
Host gator (unlimited domains)

80 minutes and tick tick ticking - I guess hitting F5 is just stupid.
Spunky is completely down. I just went through downtime over the weekend for the planned outage. Spunky also went down when Randy cluster was being fixed recently. This is TOO MUCH. GET IT TOGETHER DH!
All of my sites are down!
DreamHost is Down!
This is NOT a “Medium” rated outage!
Everything is broken!
Well, it’s been 20 minutes.
Dreamhost has always been great. Best service for the best price. It’s not usual for something like this to happen.
Jalapa is down, everything is down :S
To hell in a hand basket. Nothing else to say.
Watching people flip out is very entertaining. Stay down another 20 minutes DH.. I am making popcorn!
Jiji: Actualy it has not been 80 minutes, there is some kinda problem with our dreamhost status wordpress install that is reporting the post time incorrectly. We are working to fix that bug as well. The actual time of the post was 1:12 PDT . I will be updating the post in a minute with more information regarding the downtime.
I empathize with your pain fellow spunkians.
My site is down…again? How long for this time? Kinda lame now…
Wonderful:
Can’t call method “quote” on unblessed reference at /usr/local/lib/site_perl/Ndn/Common/Db.pm line 703
Well, my site has been down all day as well on and off for a little over a week. It seems to go through multiple periods of downtime and then everything will work fine for a while. I do agree that this is getting a little out of hand though and I think the issues they are experiencing today go a little bit beyond a single issue. I’ve been very patient with DH over the last 2 years but these extended downtimes are really starting to degrade the appeal of my site. I’ve got a static ip at work so it looks like I will be hosting myself in the near future so I can migrate away from this shared hosting nightmare.
These comment pages are entertaining. I don’t know any hosting company that is as ontop of repairs as Dreamhost is. Everyone always complains, but you will never get 100% uptime with any hosting company ever, period! It’s hilarious, and you always get the former people attempting to bring the companies down, you get the people that rant and say i’m leaving this is ridculous. Oh where would the world be with out the ability for anyone to voice their worthless oppinions?
I once heard a great saying “Of course you are entitled to your oppinion, but that doesn’t make it valid!”
I like powweb.com for hosting. they are great.
Kennith, most hosting companies don’t have the amount of downtime DH has…it’d be better that instead of being quick to repair things, DH fixed things so that there was less downtime in the first place.
The quality of reliability at DH has gone down considerably in 08. It was better before. It needs improvement.
If uptime is so paramount to you people, why do you not do a round-robin dns or equivalent, so when your DH site goes down it refers back to your local machine which is mirroring the same site to take the downtime load. I once did this when I was fanatical about uptime.
Nowadays, I just come here to read your whining… it’s better than any other comic relief available. Get over yourselves, only someone as cheap as you would complain about a cheap service being cheap, and not be pro-active about implementing a solution.
Hi Dreamhost, I realize panel is down, but how do I file a trouble ticket about my email being down too? Everything’s broken, not good at all!
I’ve paid less than $100 and got constant stable performance for years. This is not acceptable for this price. I’ve had better service.
this is now low priority?! Surely it should get higher?!
I’m back up with the panel.
was the severity of this downgraded to low?
What really, really, really, really makes me cross is that they’re completely unapologetic beyond the usual “sorry for the inconvenience” BS. If you’re really sorry give all ppl affected some sort of compensation. Some of us actually run biz sites and not just personal blogs and whatnot. From a biz perspective you guys, honestly, are quite lackluster and too darn unreliable to trust my (or any) biz on.
lol you guys are funny. Pay more for reliable hosting. Basic business. I love reading the comments about people freaking out.
Severity downgraded to “Low.”
UR DOING IT WRONG GUISE
First thing: I had to do a big double-take on Page 1 that someone else signed as “Aaron S”. Wild!
But anyway, this is starting to get scary. I actually got a support ticket reply a little while ago providing a link in case I want to cancel my account… even though I didn’t mention anything of the sort in my message to them, it was simply requesting a timeframe for all of this to stop being unreliable.
What do you make of that?
#99 Neil, that sounds interesting, how would I go about doing that?
HELP! Dreamhost has disabled my site because it was using 30% of the server’s resources… Does anyone know how to get it back up? Their not responding my emails! Also, does dreamhost have a phone number?
Dreamhost, get your sh*t together. All my sites are down and I’m seriously looking for a new host.
Severity back up to “Medium”
Up, down, up, down
Just like my uptime!
@Antonio - It’s not the outage that outrages, it’s the dismissive/untransparent “updates.”
“Low” in terms of system-wide outages (i.e., DH problems) is not “low” to those of us whose sites are affected.
HTTP 500 errors. good times.
Your sites were down for 20 minutes! What is wrong with you?
Adam, with the increase in downtime recently, I am actually considering getting another host. I don’t want to do that, because I like DH’s features and commitment to carbon offsetting. But the reliability on spunky lately has been non-existent. What I might end up doing is finding another host and keeping DH for a while to see which one is better. Or use DH for large files and use the other one for the front of my sites.
I did have that before, and DH at the time was actually better, but DH has gotten so bad now I may have no choice but to get another provider.
WTF?!?!?! Why does my site always go down at a CRUCIAL moment. Like 4 seconds after I ask a client to review something or 2 minutes after I apply for a job.
NONE OF MY SITES ARE LOADING. My hosting is up this month. I’m leaving. For real this time…
I have a web site hosted on DH, and I also have another web host. Is it possible to have it instantly switch to a mirror on my other web host when DH goes down?
Not to mention the fact that my sites are STILL down. This issues has lasted a lot longer than 20 mins, for me.
C’mon guys you had a whole 20 min of down time. Is it worth getting all upset for? They told us the issue and immediatly fixed it.
20 mins today, 12 hrs two days ago, half an hour yesterday…yawn
Go guys, make it quick! =)
My Uncle Jake does good web hosting. I used to use Dreamhost but now I use him. He runs everything out of his girlfriend’s room (which is my Grandma’s best friend). Call me up or page me if you need more details.
Why don’t you guys just sell out to someone who can run a web hosting company, take the money and head over to the islands and smoke dope the rest of your lives, INSTEAD OF DOING IT WHILE I’M TRYING TO RUN A FRICKIN’ BUSINESS!!!
panel is down, my websites are done. come on DH, get it together!
My site’s been down for four hours at a minimum today. It was down for an indeterminate period of time yesterday also. I had already noticed that nobody was bothering to respond to my support tickets, when the web panel and status page went away entirely. The gerbils aren’t just hungry, I think they’ve gone missing entirely.
I think it’s funny how fast this thread got filled in 20 minutes with whiners…
when I noticed this major disaster y just laughed… ¿what can I say? this is cheap, not much complaining…
you people must learn how to make your clients “understand” and not get angry… f they start yelling at me.. I just tell them I know of a hosting service that never fails, but, it’s 10 times more expensive and I offer my services to move them there. for a fee o f course… hehehe
see ya all
DH is better if and only if for the reason that they are small. When issues reveals themselves from their murky abodes, it is only because they are pushing the limits to how open a service they can provide. I don’t know about you (complainers), but I much rather prefer the flexibility of a small-time operation, even during the occasional hiccup.
Mail down, panel down, need e-mail for business. PLEASE.
If I use a DNS service like ZoneEdit, and DH goes down, and then I point the domain to the IP address of another host, is the change instant or does it take time to propagate like when I change nameservers?
@- しんてきたく
I’m just not as content as you are with DreamHost’s “Rhythm Method” approach to server status. Call me crazy.
This is just insulting. The server BOO has been taking at LEAST a minute to respond ALL DAY TODAY and YESTERDAY.
Could I please have the name of that hosting service that never fails? I actually kinda believe a higher cost is not worth having my company look like crap because my web site is down more than it is up.
People host with Dreamhost cos it’s cheap… if your businesses are losing thousands then spend some of the money it makes and stop moaning… it’s inconvenient yes, but if you’re unhappy change hosts…. oh know you wont because most of the time it’s fine and cheap!
Dreamhost has me dreaming, all right. Dreaming of the days when my sites were up…
You know it must be great to work for DH, though. To sit there are read all these comments and just laugh it up at all the pissed customers. I know how it is, I work for a big company and we get lots of angry customer comments. So funny the stuff people say.
We’re all just part of the giant, cosmic circle of crap, I mean life. Everybody take a deeeeep breath and relax. If you start to get angry about this, just take a moment to reflect on all the Social Security taxes you’ve been paying — money you will never, ever see again since the government’s inept and our whole country is obsessed with accruing financial debt.
There, don’t you feel better now?
Hey, watch me as I bawl my fucking eyes out. Go tell livejournal how much your hosting company sucks. You want reliable hosting? You’ll pay a fortune for it. And if you’re not making enough money off your business/website get some better god damned content.
from the best, now is the worst server i ever seen….uhhh whyyyyyy!!! banning by server error message! :S
Just waiting for Shawn to show up and lecture to us how no webhost has 99.99% uptime and we spunky people should just suck it up that our cluster is down yet again after it was supposedly moved and stabilized two days ago.
To that guy that said ‘I moved 4 clients 1and1.com’ => gl & hf, their panel == shit
John #110:
Google: Round Robin DNS … the first 2 links should be informative
John, it will take a little time for the DNS change to propagate. Some people will see the change pretty quick others will take a few hours. All depends on what is cached where.
I just want to duplicate it.
Problem with central services (panel, webmail, etc..)
We are currently experiencing problems with one of our internal firewall machines that is causing problems with our central services connecting to our customer database. This problem is expected to be fixed within 20 minutes, we apologize for the trouble and will update this post as soon as it is resolved or more information becomes available as to the cause.
Severity: Medium Resolved: No
I have a script testing the panel every 15 seconds….every so-often I get a glimpse of a working CP, but then it goes away….:-(
Can’t call method “disconnect” on unblessed reference at /usr/local/lib/site_perl/Ndn/Common/Db.pm line 181.
What does that mean? Are they trying to stop people getting to there or something?
Too bad I renewed my service in January. I can’t wait for it to be up so I can get off of this, the downtime lately is getting ridiculous.
Why o why?
This is really getting on my nerves, all this downtime. All my sites are down as we speak, which is really bad when you try to run some sort of buisness!
Todos os meus domínios estão offline!!!
Gostaria de saber se há alguma lei que proíbe os servidores de agirem dessa maneira com seus clientes.
To all the people freaking out. Pay an extra few hundred a year to get a second host and set up a mirror. Then set some failover and all is well.
I was sure I wrote more… look into using something like no-ip.com and their fast DNS updating clients … very robust DNS network they have and definitely worth your money if you’re keen on uptime.
Wow
Worst than a $5 hooker (always going down)…
20 minutes, eh? It’s been 40 …
EC2 and S3, booya. Haha.
Its not the people who are losing thousands of pounds of business that this is only affecting.
I have a funny suspicion that people who are taking advantage of Dreamhosts oversold diskspace and bandwidth plans are in effect causing a lesser services for customers who pay the same amount of money to simply have web hosting space with the number of options available from the hosting control panel. I have to admit, no other host does offer as many options as Dreamhost does.
The 500GB space allowance is ridiculous. You will have a minority few who will take advantage of that kind of space to host large amounts of data, which then reduces service levels for customers who have blog sites, email services etc.
Dreamhost, please get this fixed, I have never had so much downtime with any host before. My site isn’t important, but my money is.
Regards,
James Heath
Guys, really, honestly, you don’t know what bad service is. Try having your website down for three days while finding the ‘24/7 realtime status’ indicate nothing is wrong even though you know your site and several hundreds of others are down because a server crashed. Then try spending hours on the phone to some offshore locale mostly spent on hold until someone making less an hour than the cost of a Big Mac attempts to provide ‘technical support’ that boils down to “we don’t know when it will be fixed”. Feel free to try webserve sometime if you don’t believe me.
Because, really, when you’ve had service outages with people like that I have no idea what you’re bitching about. They indicated something is down. They provide updates indicating it’s taking longer than expected. They explain what is down and what is being remedied and update their projections on when it’s fixed. It’s not perfect. It’s not brilliant, but you know what… it’s actually handling a problem professionally and efficiently. I’m sold.
By the way, comrades — I’m switching to HostGator .. how about yourself?
What @JamesHeath said.
Just another day living the dream…
I haven’t had any problems with dreamhost in the 4 years I’ve had it until this year. YOU USED TO BE THE BEST.
once again, dreamhost has done it. No email, website is down, nothing works. Vastly underestimated downtime, no redundancy, and bad customer communication.
This is about as budget as webhosting gets pricewise, and i realize that we aren’t going to get Level 3 class of service out of this, but the consistent downtime even for my personal stuff is really awful.
I’m considering mediatemple.net - they are a bit more expensive (20/mo base) but I’ve heard fairly good things about them from people I know.
In any case I’m going to have to move. Sorry Dreamhost, I’ve been a customer for years, but this is really untenable.
All of my web sites… 30 of them, and nn subdomains are down…great job boys and girls :sarcasm:
Hey, if you Dreamhost guys are reading this I’d really like to be able to use my website today. Please get it together. Thanks.
This is incredibly frustrating. Is there an ETA on the fix?
GUATAFAK !!! I WANT MY EMAIL BACK !!!!!
Graeme, it’s not either/or. It’s not, either you have to LOVE Dreamhost or go use some horrible off-shore third world host that is never up.
Dreamhost is getting worse. Those of us who have been on it for a while can see that. We’d prefer it it were fixed and we could stay. This is why we say something here. DH needs to improve its reliability. Just because others are MUCH WORSE it does not also follow that DH could not get MUCH BETTER.
dowwwwwwwwwwwwwwN!!!!!!!!!! shit!!!!!!!!!!! lame!!!!!!
we’re all mushrooms, kept in the dark and fed 5hit
all you people asking for same pricing but better uptime it has been my experience that even though you have more uptime something else is horrid… like restrictions on domains or horrible billing errors or just all around apathy about the customer (i.e. them insisting downtime is your fault and their stuff was flawless). While DreamHost has downtime, one thing they do is keep up informed and don’t jerk us around like many other webhosts do. I will admit though this is the LAST place i would put customer’s sites, you should probably move to somewhere like GoDaddy for customers and have them deal with everything while you receive horrible customer support for people who shouldn’t be allowed to touch a computer.
SMTP, too?
We’re having funky SMTP outages. Like, I can connect from Ubuntu, but my Mac colleagues can’t connect. They get an error that says that the SMTP server could not be reached.

20 minutes, about half an hour ago :p
UPDATE? COME ONNNNNNNNNNNNN
their clocks are down
“..fixed in 20minutes.” And that was posted 45 minutes ago.
If thats the case then change to a more expensive host! There are plenty out there with good uptime.
Speaking as an ISP who moved my client sites TO Dreamhost because I was tired of having to support all the telecom and hardware myself …
Give the guys a break and go get a coffee or something!
Sheesh! They’re working on it. It’ll be back up shortly.
I am still having problems. Please help. it has been 47 minutes.
I just bought a new domain and now this!
Gah!
I heard DH is one guy in his bedroom with an old amiga, is that right?
What evil happen!!! My sites and DreamHost panel are dowwwnnnnnnn :M
OMG IT’S STILL DOWN!!!
Don’t use dreamhost for mail, use google.com/a/. Web hosting has been o.k., however having the pane down sucks.
GIVE ME MY EMAIL BACK!!!!!
woo woo woo mine are all back up woot woot.
Just kidding.
OMG MY SITE IS DOWN!!!! oh wait, it’s just a blog….eh
@ comment 184:
Way to bring back the Amiga! LOL
It began less than an hour ago? Not. Our webmail’s been down all day. And I doubt that we are alone on a server. So this problem should have been posted a looooooong time ago. Not to say fixed. I’ve been trying to hang in here, explain the outages to others less tolerant, justify re-upping for another three years. But I’m sorry, this is really sorry.
The downtime does not bother me as much as no updates. You computer guys really are in your own little world sometimes. Surely you can afford to pay someone a little something extra to have constant updates. Come on DH, use your heads
Loosing 250 customers per day… frustrating.
Software error:
Can’t call method “disconnect” on unblessed reference at /usr/local/lib/site_perl/Ndn/Common/Db.pm line 181.
For help, please send mail to the webmaster (support@dreamhost.com), giving this error message and the time and date of the error.
I do not expect six nines uptime, but I seriously doubt that in the last week I even get up to the first nine!
If this was a joke, it was a bad one.
A few days ago..I also had no access to any of my sites…but it haven’t lasted so long… It’s really not OK!
I’m to lazy to look for a different hosting provider, but I’m not going to be lazy anymore if dreamhost continues with this practice
Hey Dreamhost, why can’t you fix the email problems that keep haunting us over and over again every week ? I just lost a client for recommending you, and still have to migrate their 19 sites out of your servers. The reason ? Your never ending email problems
Grass is always greener. I’ve had bad experiences with every shared host I’ve used, and perhaps one of the worst was Mediatemple. You can’t win - can’t get 100% uptime - with shared hosting. Period. If you must have 100% uptime, get a dedicated host or host yourself. End of story.
If you are dealing with ‘clients’ then maybe you shouldn’t be such a cheapskate and pay for business hosting - dreamhost is cheap and cheerful but if you need stablity then pay for it.
My sites on apu are loading just fine. FTP’s connecting without issue, too. So I can’t get to the cp for a bit - big deal. I barely go there anyways.
Unclench, people. I’m so tired of the haters who whine ALL THE EFFING TIME. Do me a favor; instead of posting your crap here, just fuck off and go someplace else. We won’t miss you and neither will DH.
The LEAST you could do is update the fucking blog post ….’expected to be fixed in 20 minutes’, 50+ minutes ago?!
I saw an updated blog entry for a second, and then I reloaded the page to check for more updates, and it was back to the original post … seriously. I know computers f*ck off once in a while, and SOME downtime is inevitable, but the LEAST you can do is keep the outage posts updated so we actually KNOW what’s going on!
hurry up, fix this
Frustrating - and not just today either. Loosing customers!
So much for that 20 minutes
Aye, things were down for hours before they even started having issues with the web panel and such. My first (and still unanswered) support ticket is from almost four and a half hours ago now. And I have no idea how long it was down before I noticed it.
Very frustrating! Not just today either. I’m loosing customers!!!
All is off in http://www.conexaostore.com
I guess the problem I have is that you don’t know what’s going to kill you next. This week it’s control panel issues. Last week mysql was buggy. Week before there were disk problems. It would be one thing if THEY would catch this stuff - but I’m usually the one finding it and calling in the ticket.
Annoying….leaving as soon as possible.
I love how they moved the entire mail sever over to wherever, and its SLOWER than it was before.
#202 DP, it’s not just the control panel. My single site is down entirely (not responding to http, ssh, ftp, http, pop3, etc.) I’m not clenched up about it — shit happens — but the issue is more widespread than this post currently indicates.
I’ve been on bellflower for 2 years, and out of those 2 years I’ve had only 2 episodes of noticeable downtime. People need to stop crying so much.
@Neil If uptime is so paramount to you people, why do you not do a round-robin dns or equivalent, so when your DH site goes down it refers back to your local machine which is mirroring the same site to take the downtime load. I once did this when I was fanatical about uptime.
Round robin DNS is not a good scheme to provide failover; clients cache whichever A record they got served last. If one of the locations is offline, you still have to change the round robin A records, and make sure they propagate quickly (in other words, the time-to-live on these records should be very low, which isn’t so great for performance). Of course, DNS needs to be setup redundantly too (it isn’t fun when the primary DNS server fails, and you don’t have the required access to the secondaries to upgrade them to primary, and change the zone information).
Besides, for serving up static pages, simply switching DNS might work, but with services that need to access some sort of central database (i.e. any dynamic website that uses a database, e-mail, etc.) it’s preferable to have a redundant internet connection; with BGP anycast playing the role round robin would in DNS; only, while the paths taken to the datacenter might be disparate, it goes to the same (cluster of..) machines.
This kind of thing is basically what you’d expect an ISP to provide (through its economies of scale); otherwise, you might as well just run a webserver on your broadband connected home computer. And you already have a broadband connected home computer (that goes down once every often to install windows updates). Whatever you pay dreamhost comes on top of that, so it isn’t unreasonable to expect something in the area of uptime, which is after all, harder to do as a consumer at home.
These guys are pathetic. They truely want us to get our rankings screwed up on the search engines.
COME ON !!!
plz fix that thing, i have 7 domains, and lots of people crying about their mails.
Looks like they have a program that does that , so basically every hour you get a chance that your site goes offline for an hour

I’t up…no it’s not…it’s up….no it’s not….it’s..nope just an error….good thing my ftp was still up, I had a remapped subdir messing up my site and I couldn’t get to the CP to adjust…this is the venting place…..does no goo, but it makes everyone feel better until they refresh and see 15 more posts happen between when they started typing…i guess everyone got this whammy….today is not a good hardware day I guess.
I recommended you to where I am working, and now I am eating my recommendation.
Thanks DH!
FTP works but forum and website are dowwwwnnn, what happens people???
So, nothing working at all is a medium severity issue for dreamhost? What would be red, if the BILLING page was down? Fucking idiots, I’m done with Dreamhost as soon as these fucking apes that think they’re funny fix their fucking horrible servers. What idiots!
FUCKING BLOG THEY CANT EVEN LET YOU POST A BIT OF CODE!!!!
FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCKFUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK
With all due respect, if you are LOOSING your customers then it’s your own fault for setting them loose.
Now, for people who are LOSING customers, I would expect them to be angry because you are only supposed to lose things when you snooze, not when your host goes out again.
Dreamhost, your service lately has been terrible. You just lost a customer whose been with you for 6 years.
Did I miss the woot?
Who hosts dreamhoststatus.com? I’d like to switch over to THAT company (and we ALL know it is another one)
ok I’m getting my car keys. I will bitch-slap the person that recommended me dreamhost 4 weeks ago.
Why don’t they run the servers on whatever the heck they’re running this “status” site?
“These guys are pathetic. They truely want us to get our rankings screwed up on the search engines.”
Hilarious.
If you’re so worried about SEO, pay for paid placement.
But then, I guess if you had that kind of cash you’d be paying for a better host so… come to think of it, your frustration is understandable.
Okay DH, my popcorn is gone! Thanks for the entertainment. Loads of fun! You can turn the boxes back on again. =]
All my sites are up, it’s the http://webmail…..com which is not working.
Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Can’t connect to MySQL server on ‘10.3.67.254′ (4) in /usr/local/squirrelmail-1.4.9a/plugins/dreamhost_virtualhosts/setup.php on line 88

whew… its getting better
@ comment 229
Dude, you have some stamina! Hahaha
All seems good now!
my server load is 25, 40, 109 right now.
nothing works. all day something has been broken somewhere. that other post should be “blingy cluster exploded”
*sigh* Folks, nothing is 100%, 100% of the time. My website is nothing more than a glorified homepage, so I’m not losing money if it’s down, but I do use Dreamhost’s mail servers. The reason is that I was CONSTANTLY having problems with the servers from my ISP, BellSouth/ATT - losing mail, deleting mail, having to jump through bloody hoops to get something added to a whitelist. I am more than happy with Dreamhost as I’m sure no one else could possibly be that much superior anyway.
rss - We are currently experiencing problems with one of our internal firewall machines that is causing problems with our central services connecting to our customer database. This problem is expected to be fixed within 20 minutes, we apologize for the trouble and will update this post as soon as it is resolved or more information becomes available as to the cause.
I have to say, I’m not a commenter on these forums, but this is it for me. I’ve thought about leaving from time-to-time, but this is the last straw. No, I don’t lose thousands in business, nor is the world coming to an end. It’s just for those of us who have already spent many hours this week with our websites down, even the Dreamhost rates are too much for this kind of service. I wish I could say it’s the exception to the rule now, but it’s not.
Yes, in general, DH is pretty good about telling you when there’s a problem, but they are horrible about updates. It’s been about an hour since this post went live indicating a 20 minute resolution. There’s been no update or other indication that things should be up. I can sometimes get to the panel login page, but I can’t get into the panel. I was outraged at the billing fiasco, but I thought maybe they would learn something from it and get their entire service together. Boy, was that ever wishful thinking.
At some point there’s a limit, and I know I’ve reached mine. I had 3 years of nearly perfect service, then the last year and a half have just been in the toilet. Not even my help tickets have gotten responses within 24 hours since the beginning of 2008. I suggest that those of you who are really upset should take a minute to calmly figure out where your line in the sand is. Then, when you’ve reached it, just calmly let them know, and move on. I’ve got my new host lined up, now I just need some uptime to get the sites moved.
dreamhost hosts dreamhoststatus. Its all in the WHOIS.
Its probably like quadruple fail-overed though.
Not working here, Adam.
All is not good… I’m still down.
Surprise surprise, it’s down again. As soon as I find the time to move all my files and get a new host, I’m leaving. I’m fed up with database errors, my sites going down, billing errors, the list goes on and on. Get your shit together dreamshost.
it’s working!
it’s my fault, I broke teh intarwebs with my 48 hours of uploading
me webasite is no work. please help me on web.
Still down here. On cheeto.
Well, I feel sorry for all those paying for paid placements. Must be loosing a lot of money as traffic gets sent to a “DUD” page.
we need to discovery what is the hosting company that provides hosting services to http://www.dreamhost.com and http://www.dreamhoststatus.com this sites NEVER GO DOWN .. INCREDIBLE .. but OUR sites .. ahahaha - EVERY DAY - ONE PROBLEM!
DH can you tell me what is the hosting company responsible for this site? ahahahahahaha
CRAZY HOSTING = DREAMHOST = You Sleep, and Dream with an outage!
Wow. CP is really up
236: “my server load is 25, 40, 109 right now.”
You think that’s bad? Try 920.57, 1004.07, 704.53.
I wouldn’t mind if those who can neither spell nor code properly left. Seriously. Half the server lag is probably due to them anyhow.
++++++++++[>+++++++>++++++++++>+++>+++.>+.+++++++..+++.>++..+++.——.——–.>+.>.
Maybe that would work.
For those who wanted to know: dreamhoststatus.com is hosted by servepath.com. At least, that’s how I read the whois info…
Alex, you’re a dweeb. Still down here.
siteground.com is comparable. I left them for DH, but this is just getting annoying.
hahahahhahaa…at least your undependability is dependable. i’ll be moving asap and suggesting to my clients they make the move as well. wtf happened to you guys? trying to squeeze those profit margins with cheaper hardware and less staff?
someone above certainly said it right, you get what you pay for. i have to say thouh…when things are running smoothly, i like dreamhost. like the panel, features and certainly the price. too bad there are other more important factors.
…
Still down.
ho-hum…
@Dreamhost Tech Staff, someone’s REALLY goofing up here…this is totally ridiculous
Mmmm, I noticed a delay on webmail during this day, now I know why
Well, it’s been over an hour… my faith in this company is shaken, Hostagtor is starting to look mighty friendly.
It’s back up.
This entry was posted 1 hour, 5 minutes ago on Tuesday, March 25th, 2008 at 1:12 pm…
20 minutes eh?
oh, and I love how the title makes the problem seem somewhat insignificant… until you realize the the etc part actually means AND EVERYTHING ELSE.
My websites and I are going somewhere else. The level of service, communication, and everything else here is AWFUL. Plus I still haven’t forgotten about the whole billing mess a few months back.
really people? you really want 16 blog updates every five minutes? well, I’D rather have someone be busy fixing the problem than have someone be busy letting us KNOW they’re fixing the problem.
Sawtelle web service is down by the way =]
weeeeee. dhftw!
Nope, my sites are still down.
I’m going to email DH nicely about this after it’s fixed, telling them that the downtime lately has been too much and I’d like some sort of credit on my account for my pain.
I’m also going to tell them if they don’t improve in the next few months I am going to have to leave.
I hate to do that, but this is really too much…spunky has been funky more than not.
Second time my websites are down this week. Oh well.
Hostgator randomly deleted my databases. Stay away from those guys.
dear dreamhost. never put an ETA on a fix you aren’t sure you’ll make. kthxbai
HMMM, all that money we are loosing while dreamhost just gets richer and richer by screwing us up.
tsk tsk tsk….
Imagine all those pay per click ads chewying up your dollars as visitors get sent to “nowhere land”….
Imagine all those google bots trying to crawl your pages only to find out there is nothing there….
rankings slowly fall number by number until you are on page 2, then page 3 …..
You may say I’m a dreamer, but its a FUCKING NIGHTMARE!!!!
My outgoing mail on multiple accounts with Dreamhost are down. It doesn’t mention this in the status. Is anyone else’s POP mail down, too? Or, is this an entirely different issue.
Look, I don’t expect much for $7 a month (more like 5 times that with the multiple accounts that I administer), but I do expect when someone suggests 20 minutes, that it doesn’t take over triple that. (and counting)
*sigh*
I cant send mail out.
Of course the sign up page is working, that’s the part of the site where they make money - it doesn’t matter if the members sites work because who gives a fuck - they already paid. For a place that concerns itself so much with being funny you guys sure are coming off like a bunch of dumb kids.
MEDIUM?!?!
NetChick,
I can receive email but I can’t send it out. So I have been sending out email through a free online webmail service with my DH return address.
I have sites of my clients… and I said to them this problem will be fixed “in 20 minutes… or so…” but as I see…. +1 hour and still waiting…
No updates??
None of my sites went down. Not even mail.
Rockin’.
http://www.site5.com/support/uptime.php - I really wish there was this type of info readily available for DH. I have my limits as well but I’m so cheap that one day a month when I get caught up on stale emails is probably a good thing…
Too bad I then hit the SMTP cap and my account gets blocked!
Why this web falls ever?
This is my last “incident” with dreamhost. I’m f’ng outta here. Dreamhost suck BIGTIME
admiralty still down - mail and websites
And LOL to the people who paid for callbacks with their account, they’re just paying for 3 days of help since EVERYDAY the fucking thing is down, and all theyre told is probably ‘Doh looks like we messed up! Hehehe we’re so silly! We’ll fix it don’t u worry mister! Hehehehheheh have a nice day!’ Since all these idiots running this thing are kids. I’m so damn ANGRY this happens DAILY now!
I have good faith it all turns out, but does this affects FTP as well? Since I was earlier able to login, but suddenly now I can’t :S.
I want here all night (in italy are 22:28) until all again! Shit!
When I log on to my shell it just takes me to the root directory. Says that my home directory isn’t even there. All my websites are down. This is ridiculous, get your shit together.
Hmm… Anon… Wish I could use gmail for my business correspondence, but I can’t. And, I have several really critical emails sitting in my outbox. Ya, I can receive too. Not much good for what I need to get out the door in the next 30 minutes until East goes home. I guess I had better get on the phone. Good times. Not.
Okay - i have been quiet in the past … I have been loyal for five years with Dreamhost, and I just actually went through the horrific process of getting a domain that Network Solutions had their claws into and I am STILL having issues with that……..I was patient through the brownouts 2 years ago, backup servers going offline ….. but this is starting to get a bit ridiculous…..my patience is actually starting to wear thin.
Dreamhost can offer all these great deals, but they need to do something as compensation for all this chaos they seem to be dealing with.
I tried to help them out when I was an IT reseller to help with their problems a while back……but they turned me down.
Ok. You guys are right. I’m starting looking for another provider.
ha ha you guys need to take a chill pill
Dreamhoststatus.com is NOT hosted by dreamhost as LC says ….

that’s the answer then!
danm, I wonder how much traffic this page must be getting? We could put links here to promote our services and products …maybe put affil links here so we can get rich like dreamhost
#282, js: DON’T go to Site5. I migrated all accounts from there about 2 years ago. They entirely suck these days. At least DH gives status updates of some sort. Site5 are a bunch of asses that don’t know service at all. The left hand over there doesn’t have a clue that the right hand is scratching your ass. They suck.
I just have published my software on Softpedia and users can´t download anything. ![]()
http://www.meyertools.com
arf …
Oddly enough, I can login and exchange keys via SSH, but my certificate login isn’t working. Strangeness. Perhaps my server can’t talk to my Disk Array?
Sites came up for about 45 seconds, and went down again. Ugh.
Matt
Oops I meant
serverpath.com - which leads the answer to be… “http://servepath.com/”
just logged in in my a account and got:
javaroche@poprock:/home$ Could not chdir to home directory /home/javaroche: No such file or directory
Damn!! all my data lost :S
NetChick,
For email try inbox.com - it’s free and you can create as many return address to send from as you wish.
#301 j_aroche, that doesn’t mean your data is lost. That just means that the NFS share isn’t mounted properly (or at all).
Thanks anon, I’ll try that.
On a side note, they publicly tell us that dreamhoststatus.com is hosted offsite, so even if they have a melt down at their location, this page is still available.
Matt
No matter where you go there will be problems. They are always on top of it and moving as fast as they can- it’s obviously not in their best interest to have you (and I) upset.
Crying on these boards about how you are “OMFG MOVING LIKE ALL MY FUCKING SITES TODAY!!! THIS IS SUCH A LOAD OF CRAP LOLOL” is not helping anything.
NetChick 282
Thanks for the heads up, I’m not leaving…
We had bought servers, housed them in a farm environment at a pretty penny for 4 years and had similar down time issues. The only difference was that you could call and speak to someone to figure out what was going on.
One day things went really wrong and we suffered 2 out of 3 servers die on the same day due to some “power” issues and the farm didn’t take any responsability… we were out of there.
The Google Apps options seems interesting for mail at this point. We have 30 or so clients on our account and will probably send them a note since mail seems to be everyone’s critical app.
Everything seems to be working again! =)
weird, when these problems started happening again today my cpu and memory usage on my private server shot WAY up
#301, Aroche:
Yea, seems the Web servers (mine’s Abbabaza) can’t connect to the disk arrays… so yea… no disks, no data… no Home Directory.
Matt
My site got the connections limited which has been killing my biz and I was told I had to upgrade to a dedicated server. I have been waiting a MONTH for DH to set me up to pay them 400 a month. I am leaving DH! My new server should be ready today but I can’t get my email which will tell me if its ready. I HATE DH! The ONLY good thing about DH is the transfer limit they give, yet your sites get limited or just go down that you can never use that limit, so its pointless. 20 minutes my butt.
I have a lot of dedicated servers on ThePlanet http://www.theplanet.com and its fantastic .. very very good service !!!
Try it!
Way to lose more customers DreamHost.
I for sure as hell am not going to renew your crap service.
Looks like a serious filer problems. Check out this “top” snapshot:
top - 14:04:05 up 12 days, 14:43, 9 users, load average: 90.08, 115.03, 88.18
Tasks: 3 total, 1 running, 2 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 16.5% us, 16.5% sy, 0.7% ni, 0.0% id, 65.8% wa, 0.2% hi, 0.3% si
Mem: 4144552k total, 3817624k used, 326928k free, 49424k buffers
Swap: 6313512k total, 10648k used, 6302864k free, 712924k cached
Load average of 115!!! And the CPU wait states go anywhere between 65% (as seen above) and 99%!!! That’s nuts.
That’s what’s killing performance right now. The CPU is spinning idle while it waits for IO.
I appreciate that I’m getting a pretty good value for money when it comes to disk quota and bandwidth quota but these sort of outages are not really acceptable. I hope that the smart folks at DH pump some more money into their hardware infrastructure.
my sites are still down, anyone else?
site email is up, but still can’t ftp
Spunky sites are still down…
well good to see im not the only one, boy I hate losing money
Hey there, any news on a powerbar status report?
love the fact this problem will be fixed in 20 minutes… Posted 1 hour, 26 minutes ago
My site has been down for 4 hours now. You guys really suck. Thanks a lot.
dreamhost is toast.
i only update/upload 1 time ever 2-4 weeks.. and it seems almost all of the time I try there is a problem!! LOL
No pop mail for last hour outgoing on the east coast….incoming works fine thus far..Virginia
I started having problems with input/output errors on gir on Saturday night. Everything has been very intermittent since then. So you people with a few hours of downtime don’t have a lot to bitch about (comparatively)
Goddammit Dreamhost.
Oh joy.. spunky cluster is having problems. Why would it be on any other cluster.. I am hosted on spunky. :p
Thanks for your hard work DH Team.
Having trouble both sending and receiving mail. When mail does receive it is sending duplicates of old emails back (like 50 at a time) to me along with some new. Anyone else having the same problem?
Nice job Dreamhost. You shall not be recieving anymore money from me.
All my sites are on the same cluster and aren’t up. Don’t think its spunky. Never see that till now.
Now it says
Site Temporarily Unavailable
We apologize for the inconvenience. Please contact the webmaster/ tech support immediately to have them rectify this.
error id: “bad_httpd_conf”
Sounds like a bad case of the mushrooms to me.
Dreamhost sucks.
still not alive!! Grr… 1h 35 minutes downtime…..
Can you tell us when this will be resolved?
If you can at leaset give us a time frame until this mess gets fixed-
“webmail and other central services should be working as usual”
Yet my email is still down….
Back up to full strength and speed. Sheesh.
Matt
My sites aren’t working right now 5:48PM EST. Anyone else still having this problem?
Spunky always seems to get shat on.
I’ve been having issues ever since around noon, and now there’s some sort of “error id: “bad_httpd_conf”" error.
Lol, they say that the panel is working well who gives a fuck about the panel, that’s not what my website is you douche bags, my website is the website, not things on your end. Don’t bother updating with ‘Our business is safe, now on to yours, idiots.’ we really don’t care about how you guys are doing we want OUR sites to work.
I was defending DH when they took the spunky cluster down at short notice to move it. Now it’s starting to get a bit annoying. Ah well, I guess I’m getting what I paid for…
She can’t take much more-a this, Captain! She’s gonna blow! Abandon ship!
PAL: ftp now work or sites 4:50 central
well, I invite all who are currently very unhappy with the service over the past WEEK+, to register a complaint with the Los Angeles Better Business Bureau. http://www.labbb.org
Moe, no kidding. Get the websites back up FIRST and THEN fix the panel.
Yeah, and all my sites are down as well… grrr.
Up now! w00t!
I’m on Shocktart and it’s boned, too.
Network Error (tcp_error)
A communication error occurred: “Connection refused”
The Web Server may be down, too busy, or experiencing other problems preventing it from responding to requests. You may wish to try again at a later time.
For assistance, contact your network support team.
Poor timing, Trying to migrate a site. I can’t do business this way. This is not the first time that I have noticed problems with the spunky cluster.
All of my sites are still down…
*Sigh* Guess it’s time to look elsewhere.
Get what you pay for. This is what happens when you shop at the dollar store.
this sucks!!! im trying to upload pictures of an expensive item for a client!!!!GRRRR.. oh well its only money
I jumped the gun. Sorry folks. One of my sites is up.. but all of the others still down.
Back up, yay! :).
this is what my website says i don’t know about it maybe it’s a different problem
this morning it worked fine then stopped working at all now i see this
Site Temporarily Unavailable
We apologize for the inconvenience. Please contact the webmaster/ tech support immediately to have them rectify this.
error id: “bad_httpd_conf”
my web is online again http://santos.invazores.org/
andy: I totally agree. You buy a $500 car, dont expect to drive it cross county right?
Someone explain why problems with their central services can affect the spunky cluster?
We had slow sites before the move, the weekend we were down and now this. Like a foll I have something like 70 domains hosted here and yet I still don’t even get replies to tickets after 24 hours!
My account is now closed. Fortunately, I already had all of my files stored elsewhere so I don’t need to wait for Dreamhost to “find” them.
My site is not responding, or if I chose one of the subdomains I get the “bad_httpd_conf” error. Still down for me
Well, I found a lot of interesting info about dreamhost at this site: http://tinyurl.com/yptmlp
I am not sure how many web sites have been down for now 1h40 at least. All I know is that the 8 web sites I manage have been down that long.
A shame really that dreamhost reports the severity of the problem as medium.
Based on 340+ user reactions to the outage in 1h40, I would be curious to know at what point a problem becomes critical to dreamhost.
When this will be finished???? You said that the problem has been resolved but my server still doesn’t works….
@358 Richard
You have one DH account and 70 domains in it, correct?
I’m getting a disk space full error when I try and upload a couple of *.php files… And there’s no way I’ve even brushed the max limit.
Also, site: very slow but it’s technically up. FTP: up. Email: up.
Just this disk space full error
YOU GUYS ARE THE LAMEST HOSTING COMPANY ON THE PLANET! I AM SO FRICKIN’ PISSED RIGHT NOW I COULD SPIT NAILS. HOW THE HELL CAN A 20 MINUTE PROBLEM CAUSE A DAMN 1.5 HOUR OUTAGE. DREAMHOST COMPLETELY SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love how the update says its working, yet all my email is down in both directions
I can’t get into WebFTP. And my website is still down.
When this will be resolved????
heeeyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
That’s it, 3 major outages in 4 days is enough for me. Moving to NetSonic, netsonic.net
(Good deals on dedicated servers, talk to Adam)
peace out
essa porra de dreamhost só deixa na mão. vai toma no cu!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! vai se fuder!!!!!!!!! sites 2 dias fora!!
Still down - still loosing customers!!!!!
down for 3 hours thank you very much dreamhost
Sometimes things break. Sometimes the power goes out. That can be a good thing. I’m to go outside and take a walk in the real world. Thanks for all your hard work, DreamHost!
Well - all is good in New Zealand. Anybody else want to chat?
I’ve stuck through Dreamhost’s reliability problems for many years. Many times I’ve thought about switching. I’ve even gone so far as to pay for hosting services elsewhere several times on a trial basis to test the feature set. Each time I couldn’t find a company with the feature set I enjoy here at Dreamhost. Also consistently for many years Dreamhost’s techs have been very kind, quick to respond, and happy to help me. Except for their reliability, I’ve loved Dreamhost’s offering.
But I would be willing to pay twice as much for far more solid, reliable hosting with a similar feature set. I don’t know where to go. Since for me e-mail is more critical, I moved my e-mail to Tuffmail during Dreamhost troubles a few years ago. Paying for Tuffmail has been wonderful, solid, and reliable for years.
I just have a hobby site. But I do wish I knew of a highly reliable feature rich hosting provider that is no more than about 2x Dreamhost’s shared hosting prices. I’d pay up to $20/month for something solid with the same features, disk space, etc. Anyone know?
Alas,
Erik
Well, I guess the one upside to this is that maybe those sites that keep trying to ping my website with referrer spam will list my site as dead and give up on it.
Otherwise…SITES ARE STILL DOWN, NOT HAPPY.
What the fuck is going on NOW? This is fucking ridiculous! I was just editing my site via FTP, and the shit goes completely down in the middle of saving my home page!
Save everyone time, money, and endless frustration by closing the fuck down, NightmareHost!
I wouldn’t have minded if this only lasted for 20 minutes. I don’t run a business/losing clients or in the need of uploading something important, so there’s really no need for a rush. I just want to feel at ease that my domain will be back up!

Once again, DH SUCKS!!!
Like I said in a previous post…
File a complaint with the LA BBB, this way, this way the upper management of Dreamhost will be forced to address the poor quality of service over the past couple of weeks.
http://www.labbb.org/BBBWeb/Forms/Business/CompanyReportPage_Expository.aspx?CompanyID=13131294
Filing the complaint takes only a few minutes.
Just keep complaining here:
http://www.labbb.org/BBBWeb/Forms/Business/CompanyReportPage_Expository.aspx?CompanyID=13131294
Its the Better Business Beaureau, Dreamhost doesn’t care if you post here since you’re already a paying customer.
For Dreamhost paying customer = dumb idiot
Potential customer = smart person
Then as soon as potential turns into paying, they drop all their niceness and professional image and show themselves for what they really are.
People, use this time that they’ve given you! Type dreamhost reviews on Google, and write reviews, type hosting reviews and write reviews about Dreamhost. Maybe if we spend our time doing something about it these idiots will smarten up.
@moe - nice
@364 snewp
Yes, maybe more. [checks] 91, it seems.
LA BBB? Writing negative reviews?
What a bunch of crap. If they piss you off, leave.
revenue down to one fifth of what it usually is, all sites down, loss of traffic, not being able to log in to panel, kinda expect better - a service is a service, no matter what you’re paying.
supposed to be sorted in 20 mins written 1hr 43 mins ago?
come on lads, get it together.
Our websites are down…this is not acceptable!
So yes, I’m paying DreamHost something like $1,000 a year for this.
Well that wasn’t too bad.
Mine seem to be up
Please oh please let them stay up.
Thanks for fixing it quickly dreamehost.
Hi my name is davey and my website is broken i ask mikey to help me and he told me to shutup
i send email in dreamhost panel but they ignore me
hope my dad will help me
@Richard
I have way more than that… it does not speed up DH response time to supporttickets
And that’s a good thing.
I was up for 10 seconds and now it’s back down again.

Easy to say that when you’re not missing out on anything by them being down. Its going to take me hours of time to move servers, so I should just let that happen to everyone else?
Its da Borgs fault!!
We took but of 2 hours with the virtual store the hour sale parada´en but strip of. All webs of my clients estan shutdowns. Who compensates to us this?
All my sites up and speedy…WOW
@snewp
I guess that makes you worse than me lol. I just think that some people on here think we’re all just hosting one blog with a free domain name here.
Down again! Why am I not amazed. At this rate I will need to make your status page my browser’s home page. I have only been on here three weeks and three major outages?!?
I grow weary of hearing your novel cluster names (skunky, junky, and bunky), irrational mistakes (the bad guys were knocking so I locked myself out of the house), or the most unbelievable infrastructure strategies (let’s trade our power problems for damaged servers from moving them all at once).
You can run YOUR business that way if you want, but I’m running mine else where.
@Moe
If you are depending on a 5 dollar host to take care of you’re critical business, you obviously didn’t put much thought into it. I do miss out when they are down, but the domains I take care of for others know that they have a cheap host that won’t hit 99.99% reliability. If they want space on my dedicated server they will have to pay more. There are options for everyone.
I’m not saying you’re site is not as important as any other, but you do get what you pay for.
We took 2 hours with the virtual store stoped in the best hour strip for sales. All webs of my clients shutdowns. Who compensates to us this?
Class

Dang. I was gone a good portion of the afternoon and I come back to find my site down. Site down = no traffic = no income!!!!!
is this affecting servers: BONK, BLINGY, and BUGS I can’t open emails, web site are slow and sometimes can’t open files.
boo fucking hoo
OMG MY SITE DOWN AGAIN I FUCKING HATE YOU YOUR WORSE EVER BLAH BLAH FUCKING BLAH
grow up kids! if you understood an ounce of what they are dealing with, you’d understand things dont just fix themselves, things DO go wrong, problems do occure
MY CLIENTS MY CLIENTS IM DOING BUSINESS AND THIS HAPPENS NOT HAPPY BLAH LOSING MONEY
oh really..? So you mean, your site is making enough money that its actually effecting your pocket for it going down for a couple of hours? if so, why the fuck dont you have failover servers? dedicated hosting? or even an alternative nameserver (4th) incase dreamhost goes down
If you were any type of business person, you’d understand things dont go smoothly 100% of the time, and guess what, for those of you who dont know how to deal with this situation.. i have an idea.. which, just, might work.. maybe, well its quite random so it might not.. but hey.. give this a go..
TELL your “client(s)” that there’s a problem with the hosting, and that the server issues are being resolved as we speak. NO WAI!!?!?!111?!?1!1
… yep it just might work.
My site is back up.
I’m just laughing here at “skunky junky and bunky”
I just missed a REALLY important ebay auction because mail was down ![]()
Very furious!
It seems the problem is affecting the servers : Mickey Mouse, Pluto, Donald and Daisy
what’s with all the “don’t bitch, they’re cheap” and $500 car bullshit talk? are you guys on drugs?
i don’t know about you guys but i didn’t read anything about random downtimes when i signed up. partial slowness is to be expected on a shared hosting environment but actual downtime? you guys writing comments like that must be kidding. i didn’t buy ‘hosting’ to watch the server go up and down all the time. you can’t sell hosting if you can’t deal with hosting, simple as that.
but besides that, i’d love to stay with dreamhost as they seem to be good guys at heart, the panel is really well done and besides those ridiculous downtimes, their deals are really good. but their information politics and the fact that my site had slowdowns and downtime so often throughout the last week is not cool at all. i am hoping for an official statement that clears this up.
Danny (a.k.a. DreamHost rep), go fuck yourself.

Its great that you don’t mind paying for things and not receiving them. Things do go down, but to go down 3 times in 3 weeks for 5+ hours each time? You gotta be kidding me when you think that people shouldn’t be angry about that. Either that or like I said, you’re one of those people who LOVES to buy things, then never get them.
Am I right?
If everyone leaves DH who says they are,
that will certainly take a load off the DH servers.
OMGGG!! when is this major issue going to be resolved? its ok if the websites are down for a view seconds, but allowing it to go on further then couple of minutes and hours, is not acceptable.
I’ve been unable to get to anything for at least half an hour…getting a bunch of error messages about zoom and too full, etc.
So am I to assume that my server (jax) is part of this cluster? Or do I have a separate issue? Again…
“If everyone leaves DH who says they are, that will certainly take a load off the DH servers.”
LMAO!
The problem is that Nightmarehost won’t stay online long enough for me to move my damn site!
@Worst Web Host
You don’t have backups?
@danny 405 - moving servers should not mean substantial downtime, not around 3 hours as shown in the past status. failover servers? what’s the point - why not just drop dreamhost, and go with the failover server as a main server, because DH are down so often lately?
i deal with other hosting companies for clients, and have email support responses in minutes rather than hours, more like 99% uptime, and advanced warnings when things go bump.
have dh bitten off more than they can chew with the insane bw, and drive spaces?
I was trying to get to the web panel to report SMTP problems and FTP problems on scipio and blingy, but I can’t get to the ticket system.
I forgot to fax you guys a letter to get back an unrefunded $40 from the billing error. Please take my $40 and pay someone to get a temporary email system setup. I don’t care about everything else, but email is kind of important.
Cuántos clusters tiene Dreamhost que veo que tiene caidas regulares que siempre afectan a mis sitios web?
@ 413/Moe
No mate, i hate having downtime, but it happens, you buy a car, it goes wrong and it sits in a garage for a week.
Thing is, Dreamhost MOVED spunky at the weekend to help with the issues we’ve had, they done it rather sucessfully to be honest, and there’s 1 or 2 hiccups in it that only become apparent in the course of the next few days.. its nowt to start screaming about, at least they saw the problem and instantly acted on it.. ohh, while keeping us informed.

Lame, dude! If you are gonna offer someone a link, there shouldn’t be a need to obfuscate it with tinyurl.
Also, some may think it insensitive to “mess with” folks who are angry and frustrated, instead of at least offering them an outlet for their frustration.
At times like these, http//fuckdreamhost.com is they place they need to go for that. Always online for those times when you just need a break from the DreamHost Status Blog misery!
@snewp
Yes, I do, but it’s a complicated issue. It’s much easier for me to have admin access, and I also need to change DNS and email servers.
The problem here is not that it’s down for a few hours, it’s that it’s down for a few hours every other day.
For those of us on spunky cluster, we just had 12 hours of downtime a few days ago, and now this 20 min downtime gone 2 hours has brought us up to 14 hours of down time in 3 days.
Thats more than double the 99% uptime guarantee that DH offers it’s clients.
While I agree, if your site isn’t just a blog, and is making serious money, you absolutely NEED a backup, there is still no excuse
for hosting being down 20% of the time (based on the past three days).
If DH is having that many problems, then they should be the ones thinking of a backup plan.
After all, we pay for a service that provides a 99% uptime guarantee. And since, they have blown that guarantee for March for everyone on spunky cluster, every single customer that these outages affect legally has the right to a account credit for this months worth of service.
i’m fed up with this, in 1 month my website was down 10 times !!! not just 5 minutes or 1hour but during 15h or more !! it’s a shame !! you put to much website on a same boat so the boat sink !!! why are you so mysterious with stufffffffff !!! imagine so much clients that see a site down
1-amator webmaster -> no contract for me
2-not serious->no contract too
3-no sponsor !!
i earn my life with web !! no money no meat on table !

Are you serious man? Instantly acted on it? You’ve never been with another host, I can almost guarantee that. Show me another host that’s had even a third of Dreamhost’s downtime and then tell me ‘instantly’.
Theres no room in hosting for down times, especially many days in a row.
I’ve got 21 domains that are either completely down or hang and never load.
15:31:51 up 7 min, 1 user, load average: 23.86, 14.70, 6.39

For those that were waiting for access to their server, it seems to be back up (at least with SSH). You can now start moving your data.
top - 15:33:02 up 9 min, 1 user, load average: 32.09, 19.08, 8.55
Tasks: 2 total, 1 running, 1 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 83.8% user, 16.2% system, 0.0% nice, 0.0% idle
@ Mike -
After all, we pay for a service that provides a 99% uptime guarantee.
Oh, where is that?
@ Richard Morris - why don’t you pony up for dedicated servers then and stop being such a fucking cheap skate?

Looks like my new NON-DH dedicated server is ready, BUT I cant get my email to get the login….. ARRGG
Another thing is my new non-DH server is a better server, less money, and was ready in 24 hours, while I have been waiting a MONTH for DH and still nothing
dreamhost is a budget option so if your site is commercial and can’t take a bit of downtime once in a while then stop bitching and pay for a real business solution. Nowhere else offers such ridiculously cheap prices and you know it.

I was saying the exact same thing about Powweb a few years ago. They used to be great, they performed some unnecessary server upgrades, and it all went downhill from there. Eventually they sold out to Tucows and I got so fed up I left and came here. Hoping not to see Dreamhost follow the same path because I like it much better here.

Sorry Jesus, no, I was busy on the intarwebz looking for a good manly argument about the injustices of services being maintained in order to keep normality, normal. It gets me all hot to read how some guy and his “clients” think something is unjust: a man and his army! phw0ar!
My website is down also… is this related????
It’s ok you’re forgiven.
Not any of those cunts with ‘clients’ though.
I think it was one of the Psalms in The New Testament, I forget which, that said ‘He who doth use multiple punctuation marks hast been tarred with the mark of a cunt’.

Hey Jesus - you still there. I was talking with you early this morning, didn’t realise you were busy on this thread. Hope we can chat later, I have a few things to talk about….
…just to think you died on a cross for our sins back then.
What you’d have to die on now for our sins would be beyond a Hellraiser film’s worth of torture. Glad we have electricity and all this superfluous technology to waste our time on, instead of getting a real job using our brains and brawn. You’d have to be a 2-bit hack, with serious insecurity issues to be seriously bothered about an economical hosting company going down for a bit. But it makes me all horny to see you guys battle it out…like real men.
I think my blog’s pretty much back up and running. It might be loading a tad slowly but overall I think I’m back!

This is inexcusable. For two days now the realtors who are my clients have not received e-mails. I have been getting calls about every 20 minutes. And now, I see that you have this issue listed as a MEDIUM severity issue.
I have been with DH for over 4 years now. I have multiple current sites with you and have had many more over those four years.
After the billing fiasco at the beginning of the year, and now this, I am at wits end.

Clearly this issue is not “resolved” and it’s frustrating to see the status showing as such.
I’ve been with Dreamhost six years and this is the first time I’ve seriously considered switching. Downtime seems to be increasing dramatically whilst service standards deteriorate at a similar rate. I sang Dreamhost’s praises to a new client last week and persuaded them to sign up - now I’m feeling pretty foolish.

I’ve applied this (link below) fix to all my sites, php and rails sites and they seem to back in full swing.
http://matthom.com/archive/2006/10/16/a-quick-dreamhost-site-error-fix
Ummmmmmmm 403 error. Lovely, thanks. Kind of peeved
I think I’m making progress! I’m getting a different error now — 403 forbidden.
Sigh…I’ve been with Dreamhost since the beginning of the year and have had more outtages than I care to remember.
It’s been good to me actually and considering the three friends who referred me haven’t had any problems I just feel like a person with awful luck
Sites have been down for nearly 8+ hours now…lost over $15,000 in revenue and still losing…called rackspace and have an official proposal meeting with them tomorrow morning. $400/month is worth 100% guaranteed uptime, 100% dedicated support, 100% dedicated server with root access and more. To hell with shared spaces and terrible service - sites have been slow for the past month or two so the opportunity cost has already made it into six figures for us.
Good luck dreamhost - we will migrate away as soon as we can download all of our databases, websites, and more…please hurry, we are losing a butt load of money by the minute.
PS-Our livelihoods and families rely on the web…you can probably understand the frustration of a lot of the post commentators because I imagine they are in a similar boat.
you make $15,000 in 8 hours and you are relying on $10/month hosting? You deserve the downtime.
You get what you pay for. at $10/month for gigs of space and TBs of bandwidth, I’m impressed it works at all.
On the side, after all this downtime my server should be nice and fast due to the mass exodus of pissed off people
@ free bird: surely, if you can make $15 000 in a mere 8 hours, you can pay for a professional hosting solution? Christ…
failed to stat “/home/.zanza/.jpg”: No such device or address (6)
Lovely, their NFS has crashed……

“you make $15,000 in 8 hours and you are relying on $10/month hosting? You deserve the downtime.”
That has absolutely NOTHING to do with DreamHost’s obligation to provide the service that it advertises! Stop trying to make excuses for inexcusable service!
this fixed all of my sites showing the
error id: “bad_httpd_conf”
thanks alot daren

My sites been down as well, I found this fix and did what it said, and my site is back up : http://matthom.com/archive/2006/10/16/a-quick-dreamhost-site-error-fix
@ 531 & 532 - How do you know they are only paying $10/month for hosting, DH has plans up to $395/month I believe it is for dedicated, I generally pay $120/month on average for PS, and so on.
Well @ 531 anyway, if I made $15,000 in 8 hours I wouldn’t bother with any DH plan either, just pointing out that not everyone is doing the basic shared plan.
DH claims that severity is medium, my site is down for half day today, to me it’s critical. Will be looking for a provider who shares my values.
Once again, Dreamhost proves they’re the worst host in the world. Despite the huge pain in the ass, I’m gone! Screw you Dreamhost losers. WARNING TO ANY POTENTIAL DREAMHOST CUSTOMERS - DON’T DO IT!! Dreamhost web hosting review = TOTALLY SUCKS!
lol - perhaps I should say how much it COSTS us per day to get that much ‘revenue’…sure, that number is impressive but it costs $12-$14K depending on the day…so the loss hurts a LOT when we don’t make any revenue. Make sense? Most businesses only net 10-20% after costs…$15k is very little when you think of it that way. On the flip side - we have been meaning to switch to dedicated service and this is simply forcing our hand.
Thanks DH!
Still down, and it’s almost 7PM MST. My sites have been down since around noon. This is getting kinda dumb.
It started to work
This is the first time I’ve had any issues with Dreamhost… I wasn’t around for the infamous billing incident. But they were working on it before I even noticed anything was wrong. We’ll see if this is resolved when I get back from dinner
Mmmm, Daphnes.
“Once again, Dreamhost proves they’re the worst host in the world.”
Thats being pretty rough on them. Network solutions and Godaddy are both pretty horrible too.
Anyone still having problems, I recommend going into the “Manage Domains” screen, click on “Edit” next to the domain with the problem, and then just click the submit button (it says “Change fully hosted settings now!”), without actually changing anything. It worked for me.
I work with a clients site on Mosso.com, which is a Rackspace venture and you can run IIS, Apache, PHP .net2.0, rails, mySql, MSQL all in one very nice and smooth.
So what’s a good dedicated service?
Although I don’t own a business, I think the downtime on dreamhost is getting worst and worst. I’d rather just invest a bit more money for a better service.
@ 536 davey
I did that and it got rid of my error, Thanks, dude.
I seem to back in business now. Stats are in the toilet, but I have a blog again.
now that DH is back up, i tried this fix and it worked for me, too. http://matthom.com/archive/2006/10/16/a-quick-dreamhost-site-error-fix
Softlayer is a very good dedicated provider.
Anyone looking for regular webhosting out of there (no reseller type control panel) let me know.
Does any one what’s going on. My site has not bên working for several hours and I can’t get help from customer service.
Thanks
Instead of spamming that shitty blog post, you could just link to the official wiki that covers the bad_httpd_conf error.
My site does not work for several hours.
http://wiki.dreamhost.com/Bad_httpd_conf — that is the official site about the error. Not some crappy spam blog.

Thank you VERY much for the tip on resolving the bad_httpd_conf error!
My website is down every time… please, be serious
I’ve been pretty much dead in the water since late Sat night - and can’t get callbacks or feedback of any kind from DH. Frustrating to say the least
From the Dreamhost wiki, and as noted by various commenters above, this worked for me:
——-
Rebuilding httpd conf via Dreamhost’s control panel
As already said before, the first try is quite simple. Go to https://panel.dreamhost.com. Under Domains -> Manage Domains, click on edit for domain that has “bad httpd conf” error. There’s no need to change anything on it, you can simple save pressing “Change fully hosted settings now”. Then wait up to 10 minutes to see if the problem is solved. With this solution you’ve simply rebuilt the httpd configuration file.
——-
It worked for me as well, yesterday. The site (a subdomain) was back up in less than a minute
this is getting a little ridiculous, no?
Hmmm, It seems the spunky server isn’t quite as spunky as it should be, now is it?

Awesome site! We should exchange links!
Don’t do it! They’re just going to RickRoll you!
POS hosting my sites have been down for 8+ hours now
Cool, Rebuilding httpd conf via Dreamhost’s control panel worked
Come on guys, act your age. My website has been write-only all afternoon (I can still view it, though), and I’m not cursing, or suing, either.
Incidentally, write access seems to be working again! Has the problem been fixed?
Anyone else on gir and completely hosed? No ssh, no webmail, no nothing! I’m coming up on 72 hours of extreme flakiness
annnnnnnnnnnnnnd Im down again
I’m really disappointed with some of this service… I mean, I’ve been with the company for a bit over a month now and the site is consistently slow or not working. However, all that said, for half the price of Yahoo!-type hosting, I’m getting a great product. It really upsets me that this product, which offers so much for so little, won’t be consistent.
I’d be more than happy to add a dollar a month to my charge in ‘Keep things Running’ fee.
Is there anyway to guarantee less problems? I understand scheduled downtime and the occasional crash… but some of this is simply getting to be too much to ask of clients. If my site was fully functional yet, I’d actually be losing money - something which could in turn lead to legal action… something for DH to consider.
I really dont know whats goin on with dreamhost but now everthing is too slow…anyone knows any other hosting service? I need a fast one!
“I really dont know whats goin on with dreamhost but now everthing is too slow…anyone knows any other hosting service? I need a fast one!”
It’s slow 50% of the time, sigh…. Why ever did I sign up for a whole year of hosting
ahahahahahahaha
anything new?
at this point, laughing is the only thing one can do…
this is so amateurish….
oh, well,
goodnight dreamhost…
we never reached 1000 comments. will this?
This is getting ridiculous … 8 hours?!
My website is on crack and earlier in the day it was fine, but now its going up and down.

What are you all whining about. The Blingy cluster has been down for FIVE DAYS. 8 hours only?! Your getting the best Dreamhost has to offer!
Awesome site! We should exchange links!
Yours is awesome as well, we shall definitely do that! 168 long-suffering customers have joined the good fight so far, it’s time to bring this ripoff to an end for good, people!
fuck…. my site very slow ![]()
site open 30-40sec
still the same this morning.
Unacceptable
Unprofessionnal
How many people are loosing money for the clusters problem??
I m curious to know how many sites are down and how many money is losing for us at this time
4 days whitout to be able to have my sites working!
And you?
I was Fucked by dreamhost. Whitout vaseline:
Dreamhost does a good job for what we pay for guys. If they aren’t up to your commercial standards, build your own Linux server (or pay me and I will) and pay for your own bandwidth (or pay me and I’ll co-lo it for you somewhere commercial grade). So seriously people, Dreamhost does a great job for an uber cheap shared hosting provider, but if it isn’t reliable enough for you, get serious and build and host your own box (or pay a professional to do it for you). All shameless plugs are in parenthesis.
I have a problem that isn’t related to this outage, but support isn’t answering any emails and my web support in the panel wont let me submit anything. What is going on? Why this level of failure? This is since Saturday. It’s TOTALLY INSANE guys. Like in the original, negative meaning of the word insane.
Can I help doing something?
my site were working today for like 2 hours and now is down again
I hope dreamhost doesn’t go out of business because they are sucking so much recently… I don’t know what i would do without them. I need to start looking around. If this stuff keeps up then dreamhost is going to have a lot more than just server problems, they will loose are their customers and have to close up! good luck dreamhost, you will need it.
I am thinking about starting my own hosting company, I’m sure I can do a better job than this.
I have a theory.
Things are SO screwed up with this company that it must be intentional. There must be bad blood in the company. Sabotage. Somebody had an affair, got passed on promotion, who knows, but the end result is this.
How else could the whole service be locking up? It’s an inside job, ladies and gentlemen, and it’s probably time we abandon ship.
My websites begin to work again. Light at the end of the tunnel…
Has anyone else noticed how indifferent one becomes to “sincere apologies” when one receives them daily?
Light at the end of my ass. My sites come up for a couple hours then go back down for five.
I’ll give them until day 90, then get my refund. This is the worst service I’ve ever experience in almost 15 years of dealing with web hosts.
Hosts come and go like used car salesmen, the exception being Cal Worthington, of course. Dreamhost ain’t no Cal Worthington.
Site Temporarily Unavailable
We apologize for the inconvenience. Please contact the webmaster/ tech support immediately to have them rectify this.
error id: “bad_httpd_conf”
FUCK you! and your dreamshit!!!!
Ok my website hasn’t been working for hours, this is the 3rd time Dreamhost mess up… Give me my money back and I want to change to a better host!
My sites have worked through this whole situation. SO HA. I love all you people who are too cheap to pay for non-shared hosting bitching. It IS quite entertaining. Now I’ll sit back and use my sites whilst you guys go without.
Anyone ever think that maybe DH just has so many customers that when one thing goes wrong, it’s bound to affect a certain amount of users while the rest of us are just chillin’?
I just want to know what’s up with the spunky cluster… seems to have been a problem for a while now….
It has reached the point now that I’m beginning to lose confidence in the services offered by Dreamhost. I don’t run a business, so I’m not losing money, or breaching SLAs with business partners. I simply can’t check my email, albeit, it’s something I do heavily rely on. DH seemed like a great alternative to the .mac service I was using before. With all the services, space, bandwidth, etc, as a regular consumer hosting option, it seemed like a fantastic choice. For the first few months, I was very impressed, not only with the services, but with the fast response times from tech support. However, in light of recent events, it seems DH infrastructure scalability is waning, and is unable to handle the load of their increasing user base.
What’s going on Dreamhost? Please give us an indication of when things will be fixed. Right now we’re feeling a little neglected. I have no desire to switch hosting providers, but if this trend continues then it’s not a service I’m prepared to continue paying for.
Hello..
I canceled my account
My webmail is still crashing and when it DOES run, it is ridiculously slow. I keep getting the error message “dropped from IMAP server.”
Sad Joe, I am absolutely 100% in agreement with you and I had just emailed DH support last night telling them exactly that - that I was losing confidence in their services. I have referred many people to DH but even with the rewards I get for it, I can’t with any conscience refer new customers to them with this level of unreliability.
I hope that DH will respond with some proactive solutions and go beyond the constant putting out of fires that seems to be happening lately. Actually, lately, the fires aren’t even being put out. They are smoldering and flaring back into life on a regular basis.
My Web spend more time down than up!!!!!
DH wrote: Severity Medium!
When then is SERIOUS!
I have no words …
I am speechless
maybe there is some internal politics going on..
good luck guys
dreamfuck
@Randy: You think you’re important enough on the status page to start a mutiny?
You’ve been “leaving” for ages. Stop whining like a brat and GTFO already.
Come on it’s been like 19 hours….
OMG, there is still down
i can’t believe it, 2 days and the server doesn’t work.
please do something
Not only am I having issues with this, but other things specific to me as well. They are spending so much time NOT fixing this, that it has been 30 hours since I’ve sent two very urgent support tickets. I’m losing at least one of my clients because of this.
I hope that DH will respond with some proactive solutions and go beyond the constant putting out of fires that seems to be happening lately. Actually, lately, the fires aren’t even being put out. They are smoldering and flaring back into life on a regular basis.
I just signed up here because of the great customer reviews. FTP doesn’t work.
My email seems to be completely effed up. Is this part of the ongoing issues?
Wow,
Dream Host has lost one of my databases for a client that is already very very touchy. I’m now spending my holiday trying to rebuild his web site. I deleted all my files for that site and it’s still there, even after I manually uploaded a new version of wordpress.
Obviously bored I registered http://www.ihatethisdreamhost.com and set up a blog using thier one click install. Ironically it’s the only part of my dreamhost account that actually works.
I’ve now moved to media temple and I suggest that every one else does it.
I have a photo gallery, and each photo is taking about 1 min to load. This is way too slow for me. Can anyone advise me a better web hosting company ? I can pay up to 30-40 $ per month for a reliable host.
I am currently switching to Hosteap… man this is getting unbearable, my clients have been complaining for weeks now!
Bye… I hope you solve this quickly so I can move my domains elsewhere.
By the way… check Hosteap out… this is my referral URL, use it if you want.. http://nuurl.us/3e8e9
Else, no problem!
http://www.geekfreak.co.uk my website was down… html pages load… but wordpress is dog slow! hope you guys can fix an otherwise flawless service.
Ha, I switched from Media Temple to Dreamhost because they were always down. Fortunately I’m on a good server that rarely has any downtime. I’m not going anywhere.
How glad am I that I use Gmail for all my email so that doesn’t rely on whether my site is up or not? Damn downtime.
This is really beyond ridiculous.. my site has been almost worthless on and off since the move and I can’t get any support out of Dreamhost.
HEY we’re coming back!
Yesterday slow email and slow website - today NO EMAIL and NO WEBSITE. The problem seems to be getting worse … I’m a few hours from abandoning ship . . .
Why is the severity just medium? This is serious! I don’t care if you take the servers completely down to speed the process, they are already worthless as it is.
I will cancel my account! I can’t belive that Dreamhost is nightmare
I’m not a very good business man and I’m scrapping to get by with finances so that’s why I chose Dreamhost. I was wondering why equipment doesn’t run like it’s new and I was wondering if cost cutting had anything to do with it. Check out this link and see if you can guess where I’m going with this:
http://blog.dreamhost.com/2007/12/21/were-so-high-right-now-you-dont-even-know/
Where the money goes!
Yo configure mi cuenta POP

saluidos
I fit my POP account Port 995 SSL and it works perfectly
in mac Mail.
I HAVE TO WORK! WHAT SHOULD I DO! HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Is there another way to access my webmail? I need to work, it’s causing problems, prefessional problems.
I need my site up, but I still don’t even get a response to how long the site will be down!
Keep scrolling down to check out the stretched Hummer for their party, the views from thier high rise office, and a few other high dollar items that don’t seem to be helping their servers function better. I just want to know that my money is going to the service that it was intended to pay for and not just going to a companies beer fund.
http://blog.dreamhost.com/2007/12/21/were-so-high-right-now-you-dont-even-know/
Yes, this is an official post by Dreamhost and they are pretty proud of the new office, company financial situation, and their company parties. Not so proud of the they offer right now though.
my site is tooooooooooooooo sloooooooooooow…
My 4 sites is down. Do something please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sites keep go down in a certain period of time (the same certain period of time everyday), after the move of Spunky and central services
what’s going on
NO downtime before the move….please get it fixed ASAP
……………… and then down.
I can’t believe they are STILL down.
2 general outages in 4 days? This is not cool.
If I wasn’t getting this service for free I would be outta here. Dreamhost-hosting is not cheap either even taking into account the pound’s strength against the dollar.
You are killing me Dreamhost. Really.
FUCKERS,
GO WORK AT A GROCERY STORE FILLING UP BAGS.
YOU ARE A JOKE!!!!
WE NEED OUR SHIT UP AND RUNNING,
IDIOTS!!!
Are we there yet?
Down for several hours here, this really sucks !!
This is getting ridiculous now, you must be losing a lot of customers these days ![]()
My hosting is up for renewal in May, if things continue like this I am outta here…but I have high hopes you will get things back on track.
my support question got moved to the severe problem queue, I wonder if that means it will actually be fixed today
is there dreamhost? What are you talking about? My site is still down
So I haven’t had email for two days. This is California dreaming.
Is DreamHost going to give us a refund for this?
Do we have a timeline for fixing this or what?
My FTP is still not working and my site is stupid slow. Thanks DreamHost for two days of crap. Why don’t we get refunds of the days that our sites are down since this happens 2-3 times a month lately? I’m glad I don’t see any 99% uptime claims on Dreamhost’s website as I actually measured their real uptime for a month and got a reading of around 95%. You may say, “95% is good enough” but not when that 5% represents about 15-20 hours of downtime in the middle of the day or afternoon when you really need to get to your website!
Dreamhost needs to get their act together and fast, their reliability is their biggest down side at this point. I’d rather pay a little bit more and have better uptime than more space or bandwidth etc that we can’t even use since the site doesn’t stay up consistently enough!
Hi, email is down again. I have to print a very important document from the email.
Can you staff assist with this? This is urgent.
I hope you’ll compensate for this down time. Generally I don’t complain but this is
second day. So, I hope someone will show responsibility..
Otherwise, good service ..
Rafa Osuna,, unfortunately for us, or more fortunately for Dreamhost, they do not have an uptime guarantee, so we are not likely to get a refund for the downed time. More expensive services do have such a guarantee which is partly why they are more expensive its sort of like paying for insurance. However if anyone finds a comparable service/price with such a guarantee please let us all know!
Gabo and others, I totally understand your frustration, I have been waiting long periods of time for my emails to even send…sometimes hours…HOWEVER, please try to be a little more respectful of those who are here looking to get information on when our sites will be up. Let’s be adults about this and keep the graffiti (!&%$!) down.
I tried going to webpanel but cannot login, it kept returning to same page.
I think this issue should be escelated to HIGHER-PRIORITY.
Sorry, my fault…webpanel working ok
I pay for hosting and provide email addresses to several people. My dad and my two brothers are migrating out of dreamhost because it’s been down FOR DAYS. They use their email for work, it’s not right.
Come on, what’s going on!?
Yea, still experience very slow webmail on spunky. Not all messages send.
What is spunky?
Well my 4 sites is up at last!! I just hope they isn’t going down some time soon…
After not being able to get to my email for most of the day today, I’ve decided to start the transition to a new host. It’s been a good few years, but these problems lately have been a real pain.
New customer here, and now this… great first impression… havent been able to see emails all day.
Three days in with no email and, when they do download (for my business partner) they dump 500 old emails into the email client. Joy. My tickets are starting to look like the rantings of a crazy person. I know these things happen but it is the lack of response, the rating of medium, and general lack of updates which are making me so frustrated. My business is being effected dramatically and I can’t see an end in sight.
ditto 674
mistakenly thought that paying for PS would make these events less likely to occur…
an extra $30/month does not equal more reliability
any suggestions for a $30-50/month host?
ok, so is there any information, whatsoever, any… When it comes to taking money they seem to be pretty responsive but i have not seen any information regarding fulfilling their obligations as a service provider. Its surprising that Aplus is seemingly more reliable then Dreamhost.
I switched to help reduce spam, i suppose having my server down for days may infact help reduce spam. i wonder if i can use the excuse “my bank is down, i cant pay you” when it comes time to pay my bill.
Any news?
anyone can tell me hw to export my wordpress out of here
Hey, I managed to get the email through IMAP, webmail is slow and hangs on big INBOX.
Perhaps you guys should look into squirrelmail. I think the performance is not good.
If possible please install other webmail as well, like neomail.
I’m hosted on gir. For the past 3+ days it has given me either input/output errors or an error regarding a stale nfs file handle. Now it gives me a skeleton directory - all my files are gone and I have no permissions. I guess this is considered progress?
what did i pay for?
the site works but extremely slow. Just got move ticket to severe like if that going to speed up things
Totally mature. Totally.
Dreamhost is a nightmare. They for sure are having some big troubles if they let such things happen!
Finally after 2 months of frustration I gave up. Dreamhost was a bad nightmare. Trying out at mediatemple and hostgator. But I think I will stick to Hostgator. The service team there was really helpful in shifting all my databases and files to their server. The good thing about them is that they offer 45 days money back guaranty with a minimum contract of just one month. At dreamhost I had to pay for the whole year in advance, and when i claimed my money back, they did not refund me the domain registration charges which they claimed to be “free for life”. Ok there were terms associated, but it was totally misleading I would say. Hostgator doesn’t look so tricky, have a live chat support, and the pages are loading much faster than when I was at dreamhost.
@DMF,
A friend of mine recommended me Hostgator. I am trying their baby plan. I have paid only $7.95 for one month, and it looks great. Even in shared hosting the sites are loading faster than PS of dreamhost. Try them out if you want. They give you moneyback for even a contract period of one month.
What’s with all the ridiculous spam and immature posts? Sure, everyone’s pissed off, but come on people. Act like frigging adults. Spamming your immature and pathetic crap here doesn’t help anyone.
Why do you people shit on the shit? I have to scroll down useless long posts. If your site is down, go to sleep. Do not make this place your toilet.
Server has been down for four days. Any end in site?
Here the error I have often in the error logs:
[Wed Mar 26 14:39:44 2008] [error] [client 81.185.251.109] Premature end of script headers: php5.cgi
If it could help you. Regards, veda
Okay, I’ve been pretty patient, but this downtime is really ticking me off. My sites are going up and down, up and down, up and down…what am I on, a see-saw?
I’ve been a DH customer since 2003, but if these kind of issues continue, I just might pull my domains and go to another web host. Thank God I had the good sense not to pay for my hosting for a year in advance. First the billing issues a couple of months back, now two days of inconsistent up and down time. I’m sorry, but there’s no way this is a “medium” issue; this is SEVERE!!!
Any word? I have submitted 2 trouble tickets (which I could not even do through the panel until late last night. Not one email from them - or update from them. This is completely unacceptable.
I am losing money every hour. This is terrible.
Does anyone know of a somewhat easy way to switch services to a new hosting site? Any ideas what ones are more reputible and have 99.9% uptime? I assume all services can have a glitch. This is just not acceptable. I have had my site up a few weeks and am 3 days down. This is no way to get and keep customers.
Jodi
Hey DQ, you are lucky man.. you are seeing these problems after 5 years. I joined 2 months back, and from day one dreamhost nightmare lasted untill i was so pissed off that I asked them a refund and canceled my account here. I wish these problems get solved soon for those of us who are patient enough to stay here. I just could not be more patient. I changed my host. I am happy there.
@Jodi
“I have submitted 2 trouble tickets (which I could not even do through the panel until late last night. Not one email from them - or update from them. This is completely unacceptable.”
They are only 70 members at dreamhost, hosting god knows how many accounts, and thousands of customers are facing problems recently. I can’t see how they will be able to make justice to the customurs who must be pouring in complains like anything.
“I am losing money every hour. This is terrible.”
I am using google adwords for advertising my sites. Believe me its terrible when you pay for visits that are never visited. Sigh!!
“Does anyone know of a somewhat easy way to switch services to a new hosting site? Any ideas what ones are more reputible and have 99.9% uptime?”
When I changed to Hostgators the support team helped me a lot in transferring all my databases. And I got my assistants to transfer all the static pages and files on DH to the new server. Arond 8GB of transfer.. total time to set up everything in my new site = 5 hrs.
I am very happy with my new hosting account. Thanks for my friend who recommended me Hostgators after doing a lot of research.
HOLY SHIT - after 3+ days downtime everything appears to be back!
FUCKS SAKES!!!!!!! FIX THE FUCKING PROBLEM ALREADY YOU CUNTS!!!!!!
i am in middle of my final year project, got a tooo tight schedule :@
i swear to god, if i fail the project… i’ll sue this fucking hosting site…. this is my life on the line here
This is going for a while…
Well, my site is down again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@ #691 Kiri - You should go ahead and sign up at http://dreamhost-classaction-lawsuit.com/
KIRI IS A WORTHLESS CUNT. YOU CANT SUE A HOST BECAUSE YOU’RE A WORTHLESS CUNT.
WWW,
Nice…
Why must you make the rest of us suffer through your stupid comments?
FUCK OFF JLP @ AllFinancialMatters !!!!!! go suck ur moma’s crappy soggy stinky shit patched asss hole!!!!!! or come suck my balls…. choice is urs
This sucks!! I can not access any forms on my website and it has been down for 30 hours and they call it “Medium” severity.. it’s a CRITICAL problem and not sure how long will it take it.. I just moved to this server 2 weeks ago and I am concerned now… hope it gets resolved soon..
http://fuckdreamhost.com - all goodness, all the time. Don’t sit around here all day whining about how bad you have it - go *do something* about it.
I am officially abandoning ship, if we don’t get some reliable news in the next 2 hours.
That’s the thing that bothers me, even if this is an “inside job”, there is no mention of a plan, nor an apology, nor a recent update. If you cannot provide service, then provide us knowledge of what’s happening. That is unless the building housing the servers is burning down around you. Actually yes, even then you owe your paying customers an explanation.
This kind of service can (and will) bring down a company.
Can anyone recommend another webhosting service?
Seriously. Thanks!
My bad. My site was down due to a billing error. The balance was paid, and the site was back up in 5 minutes.
My sincere apologies.
Thanks!
 lucky you spoony
The downed service is not enough for legal action, however the lack of response and the time wasted by us all looking for a response from the support team and due to the fact that most of us are paying extra for this support is in fact enough for legal recourse.
Dreamhost, you do not belong in this industry if you can not even provide the ground roots of the service you have fraudulently charged your customers for with absolutely no response back.
Are the hamsters ready?
Ok this is getting riddiculous, I don’t even appear to be able to submit a trouble ticket now! There have been many outages since I joined and I’m not even a heavy user! Argh. I’m trying to launch a new product and dreamhost is taking about 5min to stream a megabyte!
Grrr.
Incidentally my one grace is having my email hosted by google apps. I’d seriously consider this to anyone wanting a bit more reliability than what dreamhost offers.. at least if your website goes down, you still have your email!
RE: ” Are the hamsters ready? ”
Hamsters are never really ‘ready’ for what you’d want to do with them.
who posted 695? looks like we are posting with other peoples names now?
Problems with my sites up and down all day. Down again now.
RE: “who posted 695?”
I did, what are you going to do about it?
Thanks Tim, im sure this is no indication to who you are professionally, enjoy your fulfilling day of pumping gas tomorrow.
wow, up for a whole hour tonight, AND BACK DOWN AGAIN
Ken is dumb.
Has anyone ever actually gotten responses from their support people? I have a business level plan and have 3 phone callbacks a month. The last 2 support issues (this incident that i’ve done 2 tickets on and another incident prior to this that had a ticket) I have not received call backs like they are supposed to do. In fact, are they not OBLIGATED to call me back when I request it in the ticket since i’m paying for that level of support?
Their support is terrible here it is really starting to tick me off.
Right. Just to let everyone know, someone keeps using my name and I suspect Ken’s name. It seems I can’t leave a comment about dreamhost’s lack of service without another dreamhost bug (letting anyone sign as anyone) coming up !
And here I thought I was bored…
I got a standard response from the support team, saying basically “we’re working on it, sorry…” i already requested the refund from google. this is ridiculous. and no i dont know who is screwing around on here posting as other people, Tim.
come on!
1 day 7 hours TOO MUCH!
time is money ¬¬
You’re charging back through Google to bypass the terms you agreed to? Have someone read the TOS to you, you illiterate piece of shit.
You’re here badmouthing them and you yourself are nothing more than a fucking fraud. Way to go, asshole.
I’ve been a subscriber for many years and Deamhost has always been quick with support responses to me under normal conditions. Apparently, this problem is pretty severe. I trust they are working very hard at working it out for us. However, yes, an update here on the status page would likely help calm some of stress people are experiencing.
mail services nonresponsive. panel says “conker” is on high load… great. getting tired of my sites hosting going belly-up. quite dissatisfied.
my sites go back. at long last
This is getting ridiculous now, im even thinking of moving from dreamhost
I’ll hope this ends in the morning.
PS:
I think Josh is cute.
^.^
I really like Dreamhost.com and have been a customer for well over a year but if this continues into the next week I am going to have to rethink my ISP strategy. However like I said I really like Dreamhost.com and hope they fix these problems pretty quickly.
Signing up with Dreamhost seems to be the most unprofessional decision I’ve made lately . . .
The problem doesn’t seem confined to spunky alone. My sites are down, too.
@G says
What did you like about DH? I was new to hosting stuffs. DH is very popular. So I got them. But after doing a lot of research now i see that there are hosting companies that offer far better service, and far more relaible then DH. Yes of course, they give lot of space and all, but unless someone hosts stuffs like porn, I don’t think anyone needs so much of space. But still my My new host provides a comparable webspace, but since they attract less porn site owners, other users are not as much affected as we are at DH.
@Mike Abundo
Only Spunky? I was on Blingy. The problem with that cluster is continuing since last 3 months or so. Finally I gave up.
site very slow again..it was a little better a few hours ago.. now what the hell is going on now?
Now I can’t post on my blog. I’m ticked. I just finished a post, hit “publish” and a blank page comes up and I lost everything. Very strange!
Guys, its time for you re-search new hosts.
THIS CRAP HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR THE LAST MONTH! I WANT SOME BUTTS!!!!! WHOEVER ADMINISTERS THESE SERVERS SHOULD GET THEIR ASS FIRED, THEIR WORKING VISAS CANCELLED AND BRING IN REAL PEOPLE TO SUPPORT THIS CRAP!!!! I WANT SOME BUTTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND I WANT IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
well funnily enough my blog was hacked. goto lejnieks.com and it pleasantly is now title “Fuck” and im locked out of the admin panel. Im going to have a great time explaining this to eveytone tomorrow… “sorry client, but dreamhost seems to think “Fuck” is an acceptable blog, please dont leave”. I have screen grabbed the site to make sure i have this all documented becuase as of right now im completely out of options to remedy this “Fuck” blog on my website.
THANKS DREAMHOST FOR LITERALLY FUCKING MY BLOG
im all ears on new hosts, anyone have any suggestions on decent VPS *nix hosts?

Who cares? Your blog sucks ass.
So, I am seeing TONNES of complaints about the mail service being down. Seriously, someone has already mentioned this. USE GOOGLE APPS! I have never had a problem with them, they are sometimes a bit slow on rolling out new features from general Gmail, but I sent them a questions asking when the new contact system was going to be in for apps users, and by the time I sent the question and went back to check, it was already there. It will take all of 20 minutes to setup Google Apps for your site once this is back up and running. I strongly suggest you do so.
Sure, this stuff does get quite annoying, but unlike other hosts I deal with, they at least have a way to check what is going on. On top of that, you have to consider how much cheaper this hosting is for what you get compared to others. If your site is so “mission critical” you should be paying at minimum $100/month. That gets you almost a entire year @ DreamHost.
Try this. Its far better than DH.
@Evan
“On top of that, you have to consider how much cheaper this hosting is for what you get compared to others.”
Get out of your dreams. Please do not recommend DH to anyone else. My new hosting gives better services without sucking like DH. It a reputed company too.
And your site on DH is dead slow..
its opening since 5 minutes. Think again before you sing the glories of DH.
Openhammer is a scam artist that is planting cookies on anyone that clicks his deceptive links.
Don\’t click anything to hostgators.co.uk.
EVERYONE should report all of that jerk\’s spam links to abuse [at] hostgator.com
His domain is a trademark violation and it\’s just a javascript redirect to his hostgator affiliate link.
His affiliate ID is: samvit
If everyone hammers the abuse address with complaints, he\’ll lose the account and they won\’t pay out the money from the people he\’s scamming with redirects.
If anyone has clicked this scammer\’s link, be sure to clear your browser cookies to clean up his mess.
Ken: That’s not really “hacked” that’s just what happens when you don’t complete and installation. Then anyone that comes along can enter 2 fields and click a button, done.
Just delete and 1 click it back again - make sure the directory is empty before trying again.
You have to go to your site and do the rest of the installation steps as soon as you do it or else that’s what happens unless you have a domain that has a 0% chance of even getting one typein visitor
Second inconvenient downtime in a week. I wish I’d done a shorter contract, but I’ll remember incidents like this when it comes time to renew or go elsewhere…
My support request’s been unanswered for almost four hours. What’s going on?
PUTA MIERDA!! PARA CUANDO PIENSAN SOLUCINARLO ???? VAMOS JODER!!!
My sites on the spacey cluster are showing errors, too.
SOLUCIÓN YA!!!!!!!
NEED URGENT SOLUTION!!!!!!!!!!
RE: My support request’s been unanswered for almost four hours. What’s going on?
They try to answer within 24 hours, so 4 hours doesn’t indicate a problem.
My site is still terribly slow (sql), it’s like being on a broken 56k6 modem…
If this is normal, i’m going to cancel my account…
Who runs anything without a database anymore these days?
@736:
How about 2 days+?
i try to zip & move to another host but system said
no space left on device
OMG how can I do?
ok…all my db at aiai:llorens and koko:beadles are offline now…what’s happening?
well guys you say it is resolved well what a load of bull , i cant ftp my site i have nothing online and mail keeps coming back that you are overwhelmed , well where is the fix in that , come on guys give us the truth good or bad and we can box around that .
Esto es una verguenza, cuando contrate un hosting aqui nunca pense que me daría tantos problemas…
No le recomiendo este hosting a nadie, esta mas tiempo caido que funcionando…
Saludos
Is this situation is common? I have little time contracted service and I are entering want to change …
I once ate a hamster
My site is down again! 2 days, long long time
Anyone hear of a webhost that was run by hamsters having so many outages? No, didn’t think so.
Is there any prevision to fix this issue? in US is still night but in europe is working time, and without this fixed my team is not working because I don’t have access to anything…
I have had my personal sites with DreamHost for over TEN YEARS and never had a problem with them.
Two days ago, we flipped our major convention site over to DreamHost and now it isn’t loading. I can’t upload files via FTP or SSH. Email isn’t working. This is costing my company a lot of money, and will likely cost me my job since I was the one that recommended the change.
The least you guys could do is post an up-to-date status, and a projection of when it will be fixed so I could tell my boss and our customers something more than “they are working on it”.
Anyone hear about how bitching on a blog solves problems? No, didn’t think so.
Screw it, I’ve just been fired!
Time to get drunk and get romantic with my hamster.
Hey guys the “ONE CLICK INSTALL” don´t work.
All my sites (10) are now down! I was also having lagging issues from two days ago…
I have, 5 websites hosted on DH and mostly server remains down. I must say DH they will loose their customers if they constantly stay conditions like that.
I am facing problems from last 3 days, site down, slow down and now its totally not responding. To me, as Search Engine Optimization point of view, I lose significant weight in Google, Yahoo & MSN and also lose my too much important valuable traffic.
Please, DH either give quality of downgrade your package in sense of Disk Space & Bandwidth so that all clients remains happy.
The Competing website to DH, in sense of Space+Bandwidth and extra super dooper qaulity and server up time is http://www.hostgator.com
Must try it and Kick ass Dreamhost…………………
I am soooo tired of my site being down. I woke up to find yet again it’s inaccessable. I’ve been pleased with DH’s support but I do wish I didn’t have to use it. Over and over.
I’ll be amused when the day comes where I wake up and my website is actually working! I can’t remember the last time I had some decent uptime. Can’t you just kill Blingy and move us all over to new hardware?
As much as I hate 1&1’s policies, I don’t think I ever had noticeable downtime in the 3 years I used them, and I paid the same amount that I pay dreamhost! Less for some periods of time!
Still can’t post!
My blog’s not down but I can’t post!
And where are the updates? Nobody’s saying anything and it’s driving me nuts.
I wish people from HostGator would quit spamming this board. HostGator sucks just like all the rest of the cheap webhosts. It appears to me that people from Hostgator are posing as dissatisfied clients of DH to take advantage of this situation. If one does a simple search using ‘Hostgator sucks’, one will find plenty of dissatisfied customers there as well.
The fact that it appears that employees of Hostgator are posing as clients on this forum causes me to absolutely NOT consider using Hostgator. Doesn’t anybody find it just a little strange that almost all the posts on this board regarding other hosts recommend Hostgator? FUCK YOU HOSTGATOR, AND THE SWAMP YOU CAME FROM.
I’m sticking with DH for the time being, but if I do choose to change hosts, HG will NOT be my destination.
Don’t buy the bullshit. Hostgator does suck indeed.
Elliot,
When the problem goes on for multiple days, it’s bullshit.
I’m not ungrateful. I just want my stuff to work.
this is simple, if i pay for a service, i want that service working, if a company offers a service that are not able to provide so they should close the door, if my company agree a service with the costumer, and if i will not be able to provide that service because the host company had a problem, who will pay the downtime for me, is quite simple…
Site Temporarily Unavailable
We apologize for the inconvenience. Please contact the webmaster/ tech support immediately to have them rectify this.
error id: “bad_httpd_conf”
If you get the bad_httpd_conf message when loading your site you CAN fix it yourself (though it’s a pain if you’ve got loads of domains).
Edit the domain options on the panel, don’t change anything, but click “Change fully hosted settings now.”
After THREE days with no e-mail for a whole group of realtors who do business on a moment by moment basis via e-mail, this is the FIRST response with any substance to it regarding the issue of the e-mail outage.
This is not only poor company communication, it also reflects poor management. This e-mail should have gone out on Monday, so that I could at least communicate with MY client. As it is, all I can keep telling them is that “we are working on it”. So your lack of communication and your downtime results in a poor image for my company — and for my clients with their customers.
I am truly disappointed in the state of affairs at Dreamhost.

The very least they can do is to keep this status page udated with this never ending problem. This is certainly not the first problem I have had but at least before they would answer my support tickets………..and yes, I am looking elsewhere. I have one really pissed client and this all but shuts her down.
is working finally
Still slow as hell
I have a site on the blingy email server. All seems ok but the email.
It has been awhile since a status was posted. Does that mean I need to file a support request if my stuff is still broken?
Is everyone else happy and DH just has not updated the blog? People say this is a great hosting company but it seems like they don’t even really think there is currently an issue.
My all 4 sites and 17 subdomains are working properly. I had problems only last friday. I have no problems with any services, servers or domains. Only the web panel is not accessible. But this is really not funny. Hope everything will be fixed for all customers (users) too. And would be nice to have page where we can know which servers and services are under maintenance or down.
And for the blog - for last year dreamhost were online 99,9% only once my site was down for last 1 year here. My previous hosting sucks…
I hope everything will be fixed soon.
I’m not dreamhost customer, I runs a hosting business .. and I feel how lucky dreamhost is with its customers
with me, customers jump the ship after single 15 mins of outage, are you guys paid long contracts? or you make money of affiliate with dreamhost so you stay with it?
I think there is a secret to be such loyal
The interwebs lulz at my notice that my server ‘apu’ was working ok earlier this week - it’s been down all morning.
Sent support ticket - problem resolved, server rebooted and ticket answered inside 90 mins.
wow, I was up for 12 hours and now Im back down again
I know they don’t read this stuff but if enough people contact them after the problem maybe they will finally at least communicate during these lengthly outages. It’s been a bad run since the power outages.
After the last outage just weeks ago I got lip service about DH communicating during this kind of shit and yet here we are again without any kind of update at all.
It takes nothing to post an update so don’t say your too busy. Even if it is a non-update saying your still working it and maybe giving a few of the things your chasing down would be good enough.
By the way, what’s the deal with spunky anyway. Even after a painful move to new equipment here we are again.
Wow…. I’ve been without service for two days now. When will this end?!
Where are the status updates? It has been over a day!
Check out Bluehost.com. I use Siteground.com
is php now down also?
Is anyone else unable to submit trouble tickets?
high availability?
…
ok up in the morning , slow but up, and now down again , im getting tire
Ok i am new here, so go easy on me. I signed up two days. Yesterday evening i decided to install wordpress with one-click install. Went ok, but damme- the site response i horrible. It’s slow like anything. Is this problem related to this thread? Or does it sound like a separate issue. My humble request, please answer straight to the point if possible. I am new here and trying to learn this issue. Dreamhost have not responded to my support request yet.
Many Thanks

cant’ take my emails
Hey guys
Seems like it’s a problem with your nameservers, rather than the entire server cluster. My xxx.dreamhosters.com mirror is working like a charm, the domains on the other hand… :). Just trying to help!
Cheers
@a host
Everyone is not so loyal. There is some typical trait in all those dreamhost loyal shits. I guess DH has a crew of people who go all over the net, and as soon as someone speaks bad about them they defend DH. Thats a strategy they adopt to look like they have happy customers since 10 years. In 10 years time a man loses interest in his wife. I wonder why there are so many mad lovers of Dh that they keep wondering the all over the internet waiting to defend DH.
This is the worst hosting company I have ever seen. They should be banned!
I have loved DreamHost since the day I signed up, but this is not funny anymore.
I’m losing money here. Also faith.
at least give us an update or something!!! this is starting to get crazy… im outa here
I’M A LITTLE ANGRY… WHY? BECAUSE THE SPUNKY SERVER (WHERE I’M HOSTED) IS EVER SHOWED IN THIS STATUS BLOG :-S
SPUNKY SERVER = BAD LUCKY SERVER?
DreamHost is terrible. Hello 1and1. You haven’t even said shit about what is going on. Fix this now and answer my damn support ticket.
How bad it is to see the death scene of a company you love.
God bless you Dreamhost!
Companies may draw you in promising “bargain” web hosting, but how much of a bargain is it in real terms? Your savings up front come out of what an honest, reputable company would invest in things such as quality equipment which is frequently upgraded, thorough and seamless system redundancy, pro-active maintenance, fast and dependable customer service, among many other aspects that today’s webmasters require. Once they’ve accepted your payment, you’ll quickly discover that the lack of such necessities results in lost traffic, lost data, lost customers, lost income, and adding insult to these injuries, possibly even a lost mind while you wait, enraged, for days on end to get anything that could be even loosely termed “support.”
When you’re ready to sacrifice that comparatively small initial savings for the sake of finally seeing all those profits you’ve been losing instead, you won’t even need to waste even more time just searching for a reliable host, because you are already only a few easy clicks away from having an Astonishing Host! Our shared hosting plans start at $34.99 per month, but for the additional investment you get:
- Unmetered (often misleadingly labeled “unlimited”) Multi-Homed Premium Bandwidth!
- 5,000 MB Disk Space on State-of-the-art Hardware!
- 1,000 MB Guaranteed RAM (1450 MB Burstable!) for EVERY site, using our exclusive, patent-pending technology!
- 99.999% Uptime SLA with triple refund of that month’s fees!
- The stability and security of our newly-built datacenter equipped with strict, biometric access controls and multiple alternate power sources and cooling systems!
- Industry-leading redundancy and failover capabilities!
- 24/7 Telephone support from our dedicated USA-based call center staffed by only Level 2 and Level 3 Technicians, in addition to guaranteed 30 minute maximum email support response time!
- 4 hours of FREE consultation time with one of our award-winning web designers for the next 100 signups, so act quickly!
- Much, MUCH more!
STOP losing business and join the winning team at http://astonishinghost.com/ today!

Does anyone have phone numbers for executive offices? If so, post it here. Jam those phone lines and paralyze those offices. We’ll see if something gets done when they can’t do anything else. Post those numbers if you have them.

Does anyone know of another service that has similar pricing (as DH) but is more stable? This is getting unbearable!
LOL — you sound like someone hell-bent on feeling SATISFIED! Must be nice.
@ SP - The sites I’m looking at that I know are affected by this are all totally down right now but who really knows anymore. To tell for sure in the future though you can go into your DreamHost panel and click “Account Status” toward the upper right and it will open a pane. Web Server and MySQL server are self-explanatory, but your email server is also your cluster name. When they mention any of those in a post, you’ll be affected.
I’ve been a DH customer since 2006. Sadly, DH has gotten progressively worse. I’ve had enough and am leaving DH.
My ticket (not even marked as urgent) was replied to and the problem addressed in 90mins. But then, I talk to people like they’re HUMAN BEINGS and not like they’re shit. I wouldn’t bloody reply to some of the messages here if I was a DH employee either - what the fuck do you guys do if your soup’s cold or steak’s overcooked? Scalp the waiter? Stab them with your spoon?
Unclench, take a chill pill and remember what a bitch Karma is when you’re chewing someone a new ass for no good reason. Because trust me - a web site going down is NOT A GOOD REASON for the way some of you here are behaving. Seek help. Like, seriously.
I just bought a dedicated server on liquid web, fuck this. Ive been here for 4 years, and thats 4 years too long.
Well despite this ticket not being updated, my sites (being on spunky) have been up since yesterday. I did see some downtime yesterday and Tuesday, but it was intermittent.
The other day when all my sites were down, I took the time to make an image for each host and an html file saved to my desktop. When the sites came back up I uploaded an image to each site. Now I can look at the images on the page and see which of my sites are up from which images or alt messages are showing. So now it took a lot less work for me to determine that all my sites are down again. Sigh.
I just pooped in my pants.
My sites were up all day now they’re down again. What’s the deal?
Maybe they just took them back down as a funny joke?
I’ve been a dreamhost customer since 2004. Uptime gets worse every year but this is by far the worst I’ve ever seen and NO UPDATES FOR DAYS NOW!
I have been getting calls from all over the world telling me my guest book sucks it’s down so long.
Good advertising for Dream Host right? This is really bad service. May start looking for a new guest book by tomorrow.
@ 827 Please Fix It - By all means, pause them; you said it yourself, you’re paying for clicks that won’t reach your site and that’s just burning money. Not only should you wait for an all clear from DH in their post, but allow some time for the “WTF do you mean it’s resolved???” comments to appear here if they’re going to, before starting the ads again, I would say.
Epic outage.
Someone mail some Mt Dew to the DH staff… I’ll bet they haven’t slept in 3 days.
DP: Same here…in fact, I am friends with several of the tech guys at Dreamhost. Since I am so cordial, my shit gets fixed damned near instantly.
Guestbook? Are you living in the fucking early 90’s or something? No one uses a damned guestbook anymore.
I would suggest DH install CPU usage software on their server racks that will allow them to tell who is sucking the cpu power like a whore sucks dick and force those users to either upgrade to a dedicated server or just kick their inconsiderate asses off the host entirely.
Alot of these customers are running forums and shit that aren’t not even approved by DH, many which are PERL based and therefore horrible on system resources. So we end up suffering because their sites cause the filer to crash all the damned time.
You do realize they can get your IP address, right? >.>
So we end up suffering because their sites cause the filer to crash all the damned time.
Welcome to shared hosting.
i can change my ip
as well as my host
Don’t some of you have better things to do? Posting “fuck” ten billion times isn’t particularly productive…
Yes, Dreamhost has been kind of imperfect recently, but that’s what the move was about in the first place. Let them fix their shit and stop acting like five year olds.

Who gives a shit? Since they try to answer within 24 hours, 12 hours is hardly a big deal.
I think on of their employees “Loves” the spunky cluster too much and it now lives up to it’s name.
All clusters @ DH are fucked up. Here’s a quick tip: Burn it all up, throw it away and get brand new decent clusters.

This has been fixed for ages. Anyone still complaining here is a stooge.

There’s a really anti-dreamhost video on YT at youtube.com/watch?v=qS7nqwGt4-I
Although this has been resolved (and didn’t affect me too badly), I’m still kind of curious what was wrong & done to fix it? That’s the kind of transparency I love from Dreamhost. =)
Pop mail is down all of a sudden.

down day and night and never stop down time - this is real dream sucker!
Who also has files kidnapped by dreamhost?
I have limited access to my files in a Private Server and support says the problem is mine and everything is normal with the server. The downloads are with 3kbps.
This lasts almost a month, I’ve lost my credibility, customers and almost everything built over the years. Never could imagine that a hosting company could kidnap my files and pretend that all is well. A shame
LMAO!
