Spunky Slowness and Downtime
Since the spunky cluster move some servers have been experiencing a higher than average load. This affected website load times, website downtime issues, webmail connections, email connections, and other services that reside on the individual servers in the spunky cluster. The cause has been traced to a cross connection saturation which links two areas of the data center. Capacity was doubled and the load on all spunky servers dropped back to normal levels. If you’re still experiencing problems please open a support ticket since this issue is now resolved.

Oh well… I got a note about it in my CP since 4 days ago, if you say that the issue started 0 seconds ago I guess I have to take your word for it… so come to irc://irc.gnu.org/dreamhost and say it to me in my face! :p
Otherwise, would DH charge PS for these slow 4 days?

April 3rd, 2008 at 3:54 pm
No, the issue is NOT resolved and ALL sites on Spunky are still down. This is such Bullsh*t! Seems like something goes wrong with you guys every other day!
April 3rd, 2008 at 3:55 pm
Thanks for resolving the issue. The staff at DreamHost offered great support.
April 3rd, 2008 at 4:07 pm
I can ping my site (which I think is on this cluster) but I can’t access it.
April 3rd, 2008 at 4:10 pm
Now I can. Cheers guys.
April 3rd, 2008 at 4:11 pm
my site is down too… 403 forbidden… what can i do?
April 3rd, 2008 at 4:32 pm
I don’t know if I should be relieved or angry. I have been sending tickets about this problems since the move. I got I couple of standard replies from support. Why didn’t they me others were having problems?!?!
Why did you guys post this only when it’s resolved? Isn’t this status suppose to warn us before hand?!?!
April 3rd, 2008 at 4:44 pm
Nice that it’s finally fixed, but quite frankly having these kinds of issues and having a borderline useless site for over a week isn’t what I paid for, please take measures to ensure you find problems before they become this severe.
April 3rd, 2008 at 5:02 pm
Great to see it’s fixed. Now if only I could see the results by having - let’s say- a working email access…
April 3rd, 2008 at 5:31 pm
Help us to sue them, that’s the only way to motivate them to fix things!

wee! my gallery install is manageable again!
anyone have any recommendations for another program though? the more images I add to gallery, the slower it crawls.. zen photo doesn’t seem to be able to resize images to multiple sizes (or different sizes in different folders) else I’d try that..
April 3rd, 2008 at 9:56 pm
I realise this is probably completely pointless… But somebody FIX THIS THING.
Some of my sites have been down for hours
April 3rd, 2008 at 10:01 pm

April 3rd, 2008 at 11:55 pm
nope — NOT fixed. c’mon guys, let’s get it together ok?
April 4th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
Nothing has been fixed, so dreamhost, why are you deceiving your customers?
FTP, E-mail and 6 of my 7 websites all are not working properly, i have downtimes of over 70% !!!
lots of friends of mine asked me recently what hosting provider they should choose, i told them not to choose dreamhost cause i think dreamhost has become one of the badest hosters concerning uptime and speed.
thanks,
jimmy
April 4th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
How do I find out which cluster my site’s in?
April 4th, 2008 at 3:34 pm
It is still NOT fix, I haven’t got a clue who are those posters above whom claim that it was fixed.
Further more, I was advised by some ignorant on the support (probably an ex godaddy worker..) to upgrade my dedicated CPU. Now wise guy, why would one pay more, if the PS works slower already then when it I was on shared hosting and much cheaper?!! Are you going to ask me to open my wallet every time your services fail? What kind of attitude is that?!!! Even if you do not man to rip off your customer, such a support says nothing but: WE WANT TO RIPP OFF VERY CENT YOU HAVE!
Such a support really makes me feeling like you try fooling me, and I actually considered seriously for going for a fully dedicated server… now I will rethink it more then once.

I’ve been extremely patient about the lack of mail this week because my sites stayed up, but the webmail went down three times this week, and this morning, it went down about 9 AM. A few accounts are up, but not all of them. I’ve had a ticket in with no answers. I’m so disappointed because I’ve defended DH and stuck with you guys no matter what and it’s like it was all wasted. I need my email! How can you list something as resolved when people are still having issues?
April 4th, 2008 at 5:15 pm
I am fairly new to Dreamhost. So far I have not had more than a few minutes to view my websites running normally. At this point this is quite absurd and time to move on. You tell us the problem is fixed. I submit support email through your online form and after a few hours no answer?
Perhaps you gave up on your servers too.
Signed, a really Not happy customer with a big mouth.
April 4th, 2008 at 5:24 pm
Issue is fixed now for me, site is at in fact faster speed then before… as you can see at my test site here: http://yes.as
Thanks!

James - we all have big mouths. One important question to ask is “Are your sites on the Spunky cluster?” If not, this change they mentioned will mean nothing to you.
For those of us on the spunky cluster the change has been dramatic. Since the move my sites have easily been 2-5 times slower than they have been but when they solved this problem they are most definitely faster than they were before.
On - if the link you sent is a site exhibiting issues (Note that I cannot read your email so I can’t help you there) but the site appears to be functioning well and is faster than the last time you bitched here about it.
Evan - To find your cluster, log into the control panel and in the top right hand corner is a tab like thing that says “Account Info” or something like that. Click on that and all the relevant details will be displayed for you.
P.S. - We’ve already heard the “NightmareHost” gag, so don’t bother bringing it up. You’re not the first, You won’t be the last.

Jimmy - Learn English. (Although if your primary language is not English, I’m sure your English is better than my secondary language).
DH has thousands of servers on multiple clusters. Spunky (as described in this message) is just one of them. For those of us on it, this fix has been a very pleasing change.
The problems you are describing (70% uptime) are definitely outside of the norm. You’ll definitely want to work with support (not just say “Don’t work”, but useful descriptions of the problem) to get your site working. You may also want to go to http://discussion.dreamhost.com and see if the guys there can help. Remember that they’re just customers like you but go out of their way to do what they can to help *FOR FREE* ON *THEIR OWN TIME*. Treat them gently and with respect and they’ll gladly help. Tell rlparker “Hi!” for me.
April 5th, 2008 at 4:20 am
Did they just stare at you with confused looks on their faces, or was there a translator present?
April 5th, 2008 at 6:53 am
All my sites are down too. Please fix!!!
April 5th, 2008 at 6:58 am
Jimmy is absolutely right. Dreamhost is just not recommandable any longer. I’m extremely disappointed in Dreamhost. Sometimes it is as if it were a joke to them for they do not answer my support mails or just simply send the same automated mails for the hundredth time. I have never in my life experienced a host like this.
Best regards,
Dan

I hope not to be flamed for a lack of technical knowledge but would be appreciative for anyone who is tech-skilled and can answer this: Are 500 Internal Server Errors possible symptoms of the kind of trouble some of you are experiencing? They’ve been getting worse for us in the past few days. I thought we were on “frisky” but who really knows. My first support reply suggested it’s the fault of some change we might have made but I haven’t changed a thing in the weeks aside from continuing to upload content.
April 5th, 2008 at 9:41 am
It is not due to you. Like is not due to me that my sites are down for two tweeks. I get internal server error every day. It is not a CPU problem because the number of visitors is half than before this problem occured. So the number of queries are half to.
I don’t want to leave Dreamhost because I understand that problems can show up.
Nevertheless this is to long now.
Even the cheapest hosting must offer some stability. I forget to say that our sites are on dawber. Dawber is not mentioned as file server with trouble
April 5th, 2008 at 10:18 am
My sites are down as well and I now know — from this FORUM — that it’s server side related. Just as an aside, Dreamhost is by no means the worst hosting company around — quite overloaded but by no means the worst! At least when you get replies they are reasonably polite. And you can host as many sites as you wish which is rare! My life was a living hell when I was with another hosting company. Now, despite, glitches and slowness I feel I’m getting much better service.
(Just for the information of those who are angry about what the are getting).

Companies may lure you in using the promise of “bargain” web hosting, but just how much of a “bargain” is it in real terms? Your savings up front come out of what an honest, reputable company would invest in things such as quality equipment which is frequently upgraded, thorough and seamless system redundancy, pro-active maintenance, fast and dependable customer service, among many other aspects that today’s webmasters require. Once they’ve accepted your payment, you’ll quickly discover that the lack of such necessities results in lost traffic, lost data, lost customers, lost income, and possibly even a lost mind from waiting, infuriated, for days on end to get anything that could even loosely be termed “support.”
When you’re ready to sacrifice that comparatively small initial savings for the sake of finally seeing all those profits you’ve been missing out on, you won’t need to waste even more time just searching for a reliable host, because you’re already only a few easy clicks away from having an Astonishing Host! Our shared hosting plans start at

Slick advertisement. It’s a shame they probably won’t be able to stay in business more than 6 months or a year. (although, charging 3x+ the price of DH they can afford to have more ITT graduates on the phone.
April 5th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
All my sites are up! what the HELL!!!!
Please fix this IMMEDIATELY.
April 5th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
It always confuses me too. If my sites were down I could go swimming or go watch a movie (after posting hate-mail or Rick-Rolling my friends.)
April 5th, 2008 at 5:35 pm
My site is down, I’m really sad about the downtime and the really slowly servers my sites are running lately.
I still have hope DH fixes these problems.
April 5th, 2008 at 6:04 pm
yea its pretty sluggish… to the point of being useless… our site is merely under development, but if this sort of thing continues i cant imagine staying with dreamhost when things are ready for traffic… and we have fairly low expectations.
