Spunky Mail Issues
We are investigating what was causing customers some issues with pop and imap services this morning on the spunky cluster. At this time it seems to be working normally again but we are still testing and checking into the cause. Our apologies for the problems.
We believe we have found the problem server causing the downtime and it has been corrected. We’ve tested some email addresses on this cluster and they are showing pop, imap and smtp ok now. If you are still having issues please contact support with details.
Update April 28, 2008:
This was unfortunately not resolved as we are having problems with this cluster again today (authentication errors which from the reports I am seeing are effecting only pop3 as webmail is functioning). We have isolated it to the mail database and our database expert is correcting this now, we’ll add another update once we have more details from him.
Added information: we have a ‘master’ mail database and two clones so that we have plenty of redundancy and do not lose data. What happened here is that one of the clones is acting up and was refusing logins (I believe webmail is set to use the master by default which is fine and that would explain why webmail was working). We’re having normal mail use the master as well for now until we can work out the issue with the clone, so mail is working properly again while we make sure we have this fixed for you.
Quick note (04/26/2008):
We had a hiccup on a specific mail serer (just one out of the 9 on that cluster) which was giving similar errors to that resulting from the database server issues but we have fixed it and it is not actually related (just to alleviate concerns that the same problem was coming back).
Update: this was resolved per the more recent post on the subject and everything should be back under control.

POP3 authentication doesn’t work for me but webmail does. I get an authentication error with the same password as webmail when using pop. Just FYI to those affected.
April 23rd, 2008 at 9:04 am
None of my POP emailaddresses function. They are all running on Spunky, so it’s kinda safe to sa it has not been resolved.
Webmail seems to work fine, but I want POP.
April 23rd, 2008 at 9:06 am
-sigh- and ofcourse, now it all seems to work again.
April 23rd, 2008 at 9:07 am
My email on Spunky is also not working via POP.
April 23rd, 2008 at 9:21 am
I had the same problem and the support ticket system recommended a solution that worked for me.
My pop3 interface (fetchmail) was configured to login with just my username and password. But just as I was going to submit a support ticket on this, the support system told me that I should try to log in with username@domain.com instead of just username. Once I made that switch, everything seemed to work fine.
Perhaps DH changed something on spunky to disallow username-based logins?
April 23rd, 2008 at 9:48 am
for some reason, i have no checkboxes to delete, move, etc. mail items in squirrelmail (?!)
April 23rd, 2008 at 9:55 am
Squirrelmail fails to SMTP with “recipient address rejected: Access denied” here. I’ve always used my ISP’s SMTP server in the past though (they just put a stop to that), so this may be coincidence…
April 23rd, 2008 at 10:24 am
I’m getting “ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server.”….
This has happened several times over the past few weeks.
What has changed in the last month that apparently has thrown a glitch in the system?
April 23rd, 2008 at 10:37 am
AGAIN AGAIN AGAIN AGAIN AGAIN AGAIN !!!! YOU GUYS ARE TERRIBLE! ALWAYS! DOWN
April 23rd, 2008 at 10:53 am
still don’t have email
April 23rd, 2008 at 10:58 am
Getting “ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server.” when trying to access via webmail.
POP no good either…
April 23rd, 2008 at 11:04 am
Still having intermittent problems…I don’t think it’s completely fixed…
April 23rd, 2008 at 11:24 am
Still having webmail problems for the last 2+ days - VERY slow, getting intermittant non-connections, etc. Cleaned my inbox down to
April 23rd, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Still having problems with all MS Vista machines receiving and sending email. Macs and XP machines seem to work.
April 23rd, 2008 at 7:37 pm
In the last round of email outages (or maybe the one before that) someone mentioned using Google Apps for email. I just moved my mail services to Google and it’s working very smoothly. While I was greeted by POP server amnesia this morning for my other occasional-use domains on DH, my main email accounts on Google were cruising right along.
Check out the “Mail->Custom MX/Gmail” control panel page. Dreamhost makes it easy to move to Google.
I love the generous account that I have with DH and the web services seem to have fewer problems than the mail servers so the DH/GA combo is pretty cool.
April 23rd, 2008 at 11:49 pm
Hello,
I was wondering if it could be related on delayed delivery of the mail….
Some customer reported to me to get mails quit late…
Massimo
April 24th, 2008 at 7:00 am
This problem has not been resolved for me. I still can’t send email from any of my accounts.
April 24th, 2008 at 9:46 am
Neither POP3, IMAP or webmail are working for any of the accounts on my server.
April 24th, 2008 at 9:48 am
How do I know if I’m on Spunky Mail?
April 24th, 2008 at 10:19 am
@Adam
Under your panel, top right is Account Status, select it and a drop down will occur, at the bottom, you will see “Email Server” that’s the cluster you are on.

April 25th, 2008 at 9:22 am

Customer: “Never gonna give you up.”
Dreamhost: “Never gonna let you down.”
Customer: “Never gonna run around and desert you.”
Dreamhost: “Never gonna make you cry.”
Customer: “Never gonna say goodbye.”
Dreamhost: “Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you.”
Oh, wait… >:-)
April 25th, 2008 at 9:49 am
Webmail has been flaky for 2 days. Some times it works, but it usually times out.
Every attempt this morning has resulted in ERROR: Connection dropped by IMAP server.
At least it is being consistant….
April 25th, 2008 at 11:14 am
Same here. Webmail works for me at the moment, and I can receive my mail via POP, but can’t send that way. So I receive mail in my client and have to log into webmail, copy and paste all the text from the email to which I want to respond, and send my response from webmail. Lame.
April 25th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Had some problems too today. BTW, an update on april 28? It’s like a message from the future!
April 25th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
Was not email to send email from one email account to another on the same domain. Said the email user I was sending to not recognized.
April 25th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
Actually, IMAP has been alternating between slow and broken for the last couple of months. I really hope that this will get fixed once and for all now…
April 25th, 2008 at 7:28 pm
Holy cow, the status on this is *really* up to date! Future, even. April 28th?
I was still getting errors in the panel when I try to edit Manage Email this afternoon. I just tried and it seems to be working.
April 26th, 2008 at 2:19 pm
All is good in all my accounts.
April 26th, 2008 at 3:17 pm
The unable to access email on at least two of our email addresses last worked for us on Tuesday, April 22 at 9:29 pm (Eastern) time. It is now Saturday, April 26 at 6:07 pm and the problem STILL EXISTS!
We are now used to ocassional flights of time periods when this has happened in the past and it usually resolves itself in an hour or two and/or there is a posting on the Emergency Panel indicating that there is a problem and it is being worked on.
We have double, triple, qaudruple checked our settings to make sure the problem is not on our system or with the settings. The fact that this is only affecting 2 of our 2 dozen email addresses is what is so confusing to us (and I assume to tech support as well).
This makes it a FOUR DAYS AND COUNTING outage and totally unacceptable.
I HOPE that you can resolve this issue before the start of the business week on Monday morning - 130 hours after the problem first reared its ugly head.
April 27th, 2008 at 12:36 am
You guys seriously need to get this ironed out. I’m not really sure I can justify renewing with you to my users, and I’m a little sorry for having referred a friend with a business site that needs to stay up. It’s embarrassing to tell someone how great you are and then find you totally unable to fix an email server issue for days on end, weeks after it started. Your prices are great, but this is really starting to get a little ridiculous.

April 27th, 2008 at 10:31 am
webmail very sporadic
i can usually send one email then it goes down again
and i just get blank page in browser
in europe on business and must have email access!!!!
April 28th, 2008 at 9:50 am
I am not receiving any emails at all, even mails I have sent to myself via another account to test everything. I don’t usually post on here but Dreamhost are really dropping the ball lately, I myself might have to consider other options when it comes to renewal as this is getting a little bit annoying now.
April 28th, 2008 at 11:37 am
No POP or Webmail. (Unfortunately I learned about it by a phone call from a client wondering why I missed a meeting which was emailed to me.)
April 28th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
No POP or Webmail right now. After this week, I’m going to have a really hard time getting my boss to renew with Dreamhost. We can’t run a business like this. Our whole office is getting more frustrated every time this happens and of course you know who recommended Dreamhost to my boss in the first place, that’s right, I did!
April 28th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
I vote for this severity to be upgraded to High, since mail sent to me appears to be held in limbo somewhere - even webmail doesn’t show it. Correspondence from potential job interviewers is taking hours to reach me.
April 28th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
I agree…upgrade it…even better…FIX IT!
April 30th, 2008 at 5:51 am
guys, would you mind focusing a bit on this?? it’s now 6 days ago this was posted, and I’m still suffering because of this problem….
May 5th, 2008 at 8:26 am
All is good in all my accounts.
May 19th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
Yeah I have to say now that I know I am on Spunk things make a lot more sense… I’ve been trying to set-up a IMAP account for some time now and it doesn’t seem to be working correctly at all.
