Blingy File Server Issue

We are currently experiencing issues with the main file server for the blingy cluster. Our file server admins are on their way to the data center to look into the issue, and we are doing our best to get this fixed up and working again as soon as possible. This issue will cause websites and email slowness or unavailability until it is resolved. When we have further information or it is fixed we will post an update.

– Update Mon Apr 28 10:06:16 PDT 2008 –

The file server is back up and working, we are going around fixing up any web servers which are still having issues or needing a restart after the file server issues. The file server admins are continuing their investigation into the cause of the file server problem.

Update 4/28/08 12pm Pacific — All servers are back up and running (except for flamenco, see post above). Sorry again about the inconvenience this has caused you. If you’re still seeing problems with your web or email, please let support know as it’s likely unrelated.

    If your business depends on 24/7 reliability of your website I would recommend moving it to a different host like media temple. DH is great for lesser sites if you want a ton of space and bandwidth but do not put your business in check by running on these notoriously flaky servers.

    I need my site working - I was in the middle of very important posts - I am losing money.

    Who can recommend a place for me to switch to that is somewhat cost effective (fine if more than here since clearly this does NOTHING for me). And where I can get data moved over seamlessly - and easily - and have little to no downtime moving to a new server and company. if you can help -please email me at jodi@mcpactions.com - no wait - email is down!
    Try me at my comcast email which is up - mcpactions@comcast.net.

    Thanks,
    Jodi

    DH: I realize server outages are unavoidable, but this is just egregious. your blog post about the blingy disaster stated the issues started at the end of february — how can any server migration take over 2 months? are you moving the data off the blingy cluster on punchcards? just take the damn thing offline and destroy it!

    Sounds like we should get some sort of a discount after all the crap that’s been happening. When services like this goes out in other company types, generally they give refunds for times the customer is paying for nothing.

    Federico Says:

    Josh Says:

    I’m a pretty loyal customer when it comes to hosting, I don’t just up and transfer my stuff at a moments notice, but this is really starting to piss me off. Even if my site is up and running, its still super slow, and all my support tickets come back with the same answer, migration to a new server. BUT THIS IS OBVIOUSLY NOT HAPPENING.

    You guys are losing a lot of business because of one trouble-some server. Put in a full 40 hours this week and get everyone moved!

  34. 34
    Zak Says:

    Only been with DH for four months, and this is the first outage like this that’s affected me. It’s a bummer, but nothing too distressing.

    I can only wonder at the people here shouting and screaming that the sky is falling: for between $6 and $10 per month what do you expect? 100% reliablilty? If your business only warrants a $120 per annum investment in an internet presence then I can’t really see what all the fuss is about. You haven’t got any mechanisms in place to deal with a single failure of your cut-price hosting company? That sounds like someone looking for trouble. If your car broke down, would that irrepairably damage your business? If so, I’d say you’re in the wrong business, or you should have invested in a better car.

    That said, I may be way off base. After all - I don’t make my living from the internet so I might be missing something.

  35. 35
    Mike Says:

    @Zak:
    When you pay for something even a $1 a day you expect to get the promised product in return. And the promised product is 24×7 availability. No one here can complain that is site might be slow, but there is a HUGE difference in the internet between getting to slow website and not getting it at all.

  36. 36
    FeuerFest Says:

    I agree with #34 Zak, this is relatively cheap service, with lot of banwidth and space. If your businesses are so fragile, move to dedicated servers. But on the other nad, hosting should be 24/7. Of course there are outages sometimes. But my server is sometimes really slow, trhen some outages - this shouldnt be like this.

  37. 37
    Johnny Says:

    Well, I actually agree with Zak here, and I DO make a living using the internet (or at least try to, as it’s not my ONLY source of income).

    I believe the comments posted earlier are way too drastic and exagerated. I’ve taken a quick look at Media Temple’s offers, and I doubt you’ll get a better service for the coin you pay here…

    In short, if you want an undoubtful and reliable web hosting, pay for it!

    This is my third year with Dreamhost, and I really can’t complain.

  38. 38
    Mrs. Micah Says:

    @SitesbyJoe, possibly, however I put in for a PS almost 2 months ago and I’m still waiting…so I don’t know if it’s a fix that’d help right now.

  39. 39
    Brian Says:

    Great response! Thanks!

  40. 40
    Zak Says:

    @Mike
    I get that, and understand that it’s frustrating that a service we’ve paid for isn’t being delivered.

    I suppose being an engineer I’m used to seeing the astronomical difference in increasing reliablilty from 89% to 90% compared to from 99% to 100%. Those last few percent are always the most expensive to get - and paying only USD$0.32 per day for DH service I kind of accept that I haven’t invested enough to expect that sort of reliablilty. Like when I buy a car - I expect it to break down. The more I spend initially, the less I expect it to happen and the longer I’d expect to go without a problem, but eventually even a high-end Mercedes will have some sort of problem. And I doubt a car manufacturer would reimburse me for lost wages/business for the time my car’s unavailable, even if they will fix the car under warranty for no extra cost.

    It seems to me that the people who aren’t getting what they need from DH are right to leave, and that it will be those “market forces” that determine how successful DH is in the long term. If they get the balance wrong between (un)reliability and retaining (or losing) customers it’ll be to their detriment (and, unfortunately, to anyone relying on them when they go under).

    Again, I haven’t been with DH that long, so I don’t know how chronic problems like this are. If I only lose a block of a few days every four months I’ll count that as great value. On the other hand, if I’ve come in at the start of some golden era of reliability that’s now coming to an end and this sort of outage becomes commonplace I’ll move on, a little wiser and only a tiny bit poorer.

    Zak says:
    “I can only wonder at the people here shouting and screaming that the sky is falling: for between $6 and $10 per month what do you expect? 100% reliablilty? ”

    Of course I want reliability from DH.
    Don´t matter how much I am paying for the service, like a DH customer I deserved for it.
    When I have contracted the service nobody have told me that their service was a crap.

    SteveintheUK Says:

    Is it just my site’s but everything was fine until I used DreamHost one-click-install to upgrade some of my sites to WP2.5.1? After upgrading you have to go to the admin/upgrade pages, which on my other hosting companies took less than 15 seconds to do the upgrade, I clicked on the admin/upgrade for my sites at around 3pm Sunday, and at midnight I was still waiting for them to upgrade, although the actually sites where still available.

    Now I come home at 6pm Monday and find the the Blingy cluster has died completely again, so lots of other WP based sites, even with other hosting companies, are either down or running really slow I was just wondering if the Guys n Girls at WordPress had made a seriously error with there WP2.5.1 security update?

    @Zak, DreamHost, along with nearly, if not all, hosting companies always advertise 99.someting % uptime, since DreamHost redesigned there home site I haven’t been able to find anywhere that states what the uptime for DreamHost is, I don’t care how cheap or expensive a hosting company is, but if it claims/claimed a 99.something % uptime then not providing anywhere close to that level of server is just cause for complaint. The fact that people hosted on the Blingy cluster have to take the time to contact DreamHost for a discount or extra credit is very poor customer service, DreamHost should just give at least 2 months free hosting to everybody on Blingy. I use Dreamhost to test out new WordPress theme designs and plugins before using them on my main hosting services, but I still wish the damn sites where up and usable.

    Carlo Says:

    But seltze is on cluster blingy?

  46. 46
    SteveintheUK Says:

    @43 BackAgain

    If you call over 2 minutes to load a site that used to take less than 5 seconds ‘back’ then yes, they are back.

  47. 47
    Zak Says:

    @SteveintheUK
    Ah, well if DH is guaranteeing some particular reliability or %-uptime and failing to deliver, then certainly they need to compensate their customers. Of course, it might make good business sense for DH to give customers refunds/bonuses they mightn’t be strictly required to in order to retain disgruntled ones who are considering leaving. I don’t know what they would consider acceptable losses in customers and how much they’d be willing to spend to keep them, but it’d be interesting to know.

    Incidentally, my sites are back. Total downtime of less than an hour: I’d say DH earned their 32cents from me today.

  48. 48
    OneMoreTimeBabe Says:

    just one more time DH. i still have abt 50 days left for a full refund. I dont have a ‘mission-critical’ site but it’s enuff to really PISS ME OFF!

  49. 49
    SteveintheUK Says:

    @Zak

    In the last 6 weeks my sites have been either unavailable or I have been unable to add an new content to them for over 3 weeks of that time, so even if they service runs at 100% for the rest of 2008 their uptime for this year will only be around 94%, way below the 99.9% they advertised on their homepage when I first signed up.

    And NO, my SteveintheUK.com site is not one of the sites I host with Dreamhost

    I have 2 sites, both in the same root folder … one is now accessible (and loads quickly) but the other is not even available. How is this even possible? Funny .. I basically launched the site yesterday and was expecting an influx of traffic today .. don’t I look great now? lol.
