Email server emergency maintenance tonight (janky, randy, postal, spunky)

Posted (May 6th, 2008 at 3:26 pm PST) by jordan

About 30 minutes ago we had some major problems with one of our email load balancers that keeps email for janky, randy, spunky and postal clusters. Tonight at approximately 11:30 PM PST we will be doing some maintenance that may affect the performance / uptime of any customers that have email in these clusters. It is only expected to last about 10-15 minutes at most and we apologize for the short notice. This post will be updated as soon as the maintenance has completed.

UPDATE 11:30 PDT
Maintenance has completed all mail services should be up and running again. If you are still having problems please contact support.

If the email server isn’t working (postal server - I cannot send a simple email now), why don’t you do the “maintenance” now? Huh?

Severity: Low

I would say Severity: High! I cant sent mail!!!

definitely screwed. feels like dreamhost has a 1k pipe to the entire mail server group. fix it now man. better to take it offline than deal with this

Good luck getting it up.

Sadly I cant even log in. Sadness.

Oh well, hopefully it will work even bertter when they are through!

^^ Good luck.

I am down please help me, I am no longer as spunky as i used to be. I can’t check my own mail.

ROFL.. what a night I’m having..
My ISP keeps dropping connection, when thats fixed I start to work on a mail script and my mail server goes feet up..
Spent an hour wondering why I was getting intermitant results and mails not sending or not receiving..

I think it’s a conspiracy against me tonight lol

no kidding. fix it now, because it is broken now.
this kind of garbage has been happening a lot lately.
what gives?

@Steve
I think severity means how bad the issue is, not how quick they’re gonna fix it.
That would be priority.
:)

I still am down, please help me.

Me too. Almost everything mail-related takes forever. Just reading an IMAP mailbox that usually takes under a second takes minutes or fails outright; SMTP repeatedly times out with an

Go DH! I know you’re working your behinds off. Go DH!

IT’S NOT EVEN 11:30PM EST much less 11:30 PST! But yet…. email is inaccessible! Muahahahaha! DreamHost Strikes again!

P.S. Your comment form also does not like < characters too much!

My email (on spunky) is also not working at all (after working slowly this week). I also want to know why the priority is low when IMAP is non-functional.

How about making the email reliable? When I complained about the IMAP server working poorly (frequent index rebuilds) with Thunderbird and Apple Mail, despite never having a problem with UW imapd, I was told that changing to a more robust server was not an option. Why is it not an option if the present arrangement is not reliable? (I have been a mail server administrator.)

Also, this week it seems that TLS support on port 143 disappeared, with only SSL on 993 allowed, with no notice, requiring reconfiguration. Why?

What the hell? What do I have to do to get reliable email? It seems like whenever there are mail issues, my good ol’ spunky is on the list. Freakin’ a, the primary reason I don’t use various other (free) email services and pay for a webhost is to have reliable email, and you guys have a great big FAIL on this count for the last couple years. More than any other failure with DH, the constant email downtime and other troubles makes me seriously question your dedication to any semblance of reliability. And before anyone says “you get what you pay for”, I’m not on a basic plan, I pay a fair bit more than that a month, and all I *really* ask is that my email works. Is that so much, really?

I am unable to send email as well. I can, however, receive email.

hmmm. My mail is doing funky stuff. Wonder when this is going to get resolved.

Same problems as Fausto, but screw the electrons. These idiots don’t even reply. DREAMHOST SUCKS DONKEY BALLS!

Dudes, what’s going on with the email NOW (5/7/08 4:45pm PST)? Looks like your database is down and not letting folks check the e-mail? Plus the main Dreamhost site is also incapacitated and states you’re working on the database. Specific detailed announcement, please!!!

hi all,
I have problems with opening mail accounts from yesterday. I tried reaching support but nobody is answering for 15+ hours. Is this normal with DH??
I have company mail on DH and I have problems explaining directors why they can not use mail..
I am f. disappointed

once again SMTP is down.
it really is past time to move email to Google.
so disappointing.

I problem with my domain in Mail Service.. I cannot send a email in all accounts.(all domains).

Our web mail has become super slow. I sent an e-mail to support and they said it was because we had too many messages in it. One of the users did have a lot, but my own has only 90 messages in it and it still takes 1-2 mins to load the first page. Has anyone tried the using gmail with their email accounts? I’m wondering, and hoping that will fix this. My users are real tired of waiting a minute or 2 just to see the first 15 messages.
