Central database crash

Our central database server crashed and restarted itself. It is currently replaying transaction logs and should be back in under an hour. This should not affect your websites, email, etc, but the user control panel (https://panel.dreamhost.com) and similar services are down until it comes online.

We are monitoring the situation and will report back where when it comes online!

Edit: And webmail! I forgot those two were tied together. Regular IMAP/POP3 email access should continue to work.

Edit: 5:28PM Pacific It looks like we’re back in business! The user control panel and webmail are working. We will continue to check the rest of our central services and update this if we find anything else still broken! If you are having problems, please contact technical support.

Just sent out a bunch of emails to be confirmed via the Announce List (doing a mailing list transfer to conform to DreamHost policies). Now those people will get an error messagee when they click on the confirmation link. This is very frustrating.

Wow, just great, making me feel like i should have stuck with netfirms. Even though they are the worst provider ever and have the worst customer service. At least their servers didnt go down weekly…

I’m starting to wonder why I even contemplate changing or setting up users. First the Comcast FTP issue (which affects the user I mentioned) I was going in to set up his subdomain and change him to SFTP, and this happens…*sighs*. It’s getting so if I don’t check this page everytime I’m even thinking of logging in, I find there’s no point half the time.

I am so friggin over dreamhost. I can’t believe how pissed I am. If my email doesn’t work at least on time a day or my site is inaccessible its a miracle. I am finding another hosting company. I can not believe how many times I have had to complain within the last month. I am absolutely blown away, pounding on my keyboard in utter shock! I have never typed so hard. FIX MY WEBSITE. I CAN’T EVEN SUBMIT A SUPPORT TICKET. MY WHOLE SITE IS DOWN!

I love watching the comments on this site blow up when something goes down for a few minutes. So entertaining.

How is it a MEDIUM level issue? I run a business through this site and everything is down in the middle of my work day??? If anybody is ready to change webhosting service and finds a great one, email me at dreamhostsucks@avintel.com. I’m outta here!!! Maybe if we get enough people to leave, they will get their crap together (like a phone number).

    Steven Says:

Lawlz @ Dreamhost naysayers. If your site keeps going down it’s probably due to something you are running on your site. Dreamhost wouldn’t be so damn huge and receive top Workplace Democracy awards if it sucked so bad. If your site is so damn important and can’t function for 30 mins without webmail, then obviously you shouldn’t be running on a shared hosting service, right?

    Patrick Bateman Says:

Can anyone suggest alternative web hosting that is similar in style to Dreamhost (i.e. good tech) but perhaps something slightly more expensive and which doesn’t fail every couple of days for no apparent reason?

  22. 22
    Michael Says:

actually, dreamhost has had a D rating for 1 year and a half with the BBB. You have to work to get a rating that low. Finally got it back to a B, which is about 12 levels from A and they have so many open and unresolved complaints that its going down. Why should I have to have anything other than what I am paying for? Why should I have to pay for more than what is promised. I am running a “easy install” and unchanged version of zencart plus one landing page with a friggin picture on it. NOT that tough to keep up and running considering I have about 12 other sites hosted with different companies that never go down. Sorry I tried DREAMHOST. Definately my mistake. Just do a tad bit of research and you’ll see how much people hate dreamhost. And I’ve been a customer for 3 solid years paying $18/month because I didn’t notice they lowered their price to $10/month. AGAIN, my mistake. BAD Decision to pay a few years in advance. Oh, and I was one of the customers they actually got $1500 off my CC on an automatic rebill issue. Took a month to get that money refunded. But it’s cool, I only pay $10/month so I should expect to NOT get what I am paying for.

    Zindello Says:

Lol @ all these people venting.

I have a (number of) sites and email hosted through dreamhost, and as a fellow sys-admin i can sympathise with dreamhost here. Im sorry, but if you cant handle a short amount of downtime then like it or lump it.

Dreamhost is a relatively low-cost service and as such certain glitches, hickups, etc are to be expected, its the nature of it. If you need a mission critical service then go buy your own servers, your own WAN links, your OWN IP ADDRESSES and employ a full time sysadmin/hosting admin to take care of it.

Then and only then do you have a right to sook if your webmail goes for for an hour or two.

Grow up and get over it. An hour or twos downtime, whilst yes may look a little embarrasing, isnt going to hurt you *that* much. I’ve worked for providers in the past and im sure they are doing everything they can do to get it back up. We arent miracle workers.. we cant make the computers process information in a recovery any faster than their top speed (Tho some, us included, might want it to)

Our website, email, panel, etc. is down. This is critical emergency. Please resolve ASAP! We cannot submit support tickets nor contact anyone at dreamhost since that is the ONLY way of communication. My boss is about to lose it.

    R Says:

You guys don’t deserve a great hosting site if your going to act like tihs. We all understand the pain when it goes down. You don’t have to sit here to make them look bad. Things happen for a reason. And when it happens they can take the problem and either fix it or it gives them a chance to make it even better. Sooo why not cheer them on to fix it then to rip on them. It’s not their fault at all. Things happen. The comments on this are quite funny lol.

How many more days this week do you think you will have to provide an excuse for this lousy service? I reported mail problems on Monday, never had ticket answered, put new one in on Tuesday, no answer, and now this.

This is by far the funniest dreamhost downtime I’ve seen… mainly cause what good is a service that you cannot manage? So what if dreamhost goes down every time I want to effectively work on a site… it’s okay… I just suck it up, go to my local sushi shop and when I come back everything is fine and I am no longer a starved web developer :)

You should be thanking dreamhost for the break, after all we deserve it ;) And I know for a fact that once developers are into something they wont stop for anything until it is done, unless our lovely paid hosting service goes down for a bit… THANK YOU FOR BEING AMAZING DREAMHOST!

p.s. sushi is expensive… so hurry up dreamhost…

We don’t DESERVE good hosting??? We PAY for it, we don’t need to DESERVE it. We PAY for hosting and nothing is being hosted. We face issues like this on a weekly, and sometimes, daily basis. Maybe we should all just be resolved into paying on time, in full and let them give us what they FEEL we deserve. I hope you shop at our store and instead of providing you with exceptional customer support, we’ll just charge your credit card and do whatever. Man, business ethics sure have gone down the tubes. Guess thats why we have a perfect BBB rating and no unhappy customers in 7 years, cause we are just mean jerks who are frustrated and pissed when our business shuts down for an hour in the middle of our work day. It’s kinda like the landlord coming in and shutting our front doors, even though we’ve paid rent on time for years. How can any other customer say I’m out of line? Oh, maybe because you don’t understand because you are only hosting a blog site about your dogs chew toys…. Excuse me for trying to run a business.

  36. 36
    Steven Says:

Damn you dreamhost. We need more extensive downtimes. Reading these comments is just as entertaining as the Flame Wars section on my forum.

  37. 37
    Steven Says:

    @Michael

Shut your mouth Michael. Any legit business owner whose web site is of extreme importance knows better than to use a shared service for hosting. If you run a business you should be paying a minimum of about $15 a month for hosting. Furthermore, if it is a VERY important site you should use a dedicated host for around $100 a month. Just cause you’re cheap doesn’t mean you have to take it out on Dreamhost.

Panel is not working properly. Getting errors on many different pages, but a specific one is as follows:

    —————————————————————–
    Software error:

Can’t call method “quote” on unblessed reference at
    /usr/local/lib/site_perl/Ndn/Common/Db.pm line 694.

For help, please send mail to the webmaster (support@dreamhost.com),
giving this error message and the time and date of the error.
    —————————————————————–

I tried to email it but it was returned with a message saying that the email wasn’t received and if I’m having problems with FTP I should do this and that.

I actually had that error while checking domain availability but I’m getting errors all over the panel now, including in billing and I can’t submit a ticket through the panel, because it’s not working properly. D’oh!

    Michael Says:

    hey steven:
if you read thouroughly, I was paying $20/m with dreamhost for the last 3 years. just changed a week ago cause they offer the same thing for $10. Yeah, I’m a low life cause I pay $10… What planet are you from? Wow, I’m irritated cause my site, email and support ticket panel has been down for an hour and 30 minutes, excuse me that work is important. I’m a looser for that too… Maybe, I should just have calculated the effort to deal with over 40 times when our entire staffs email has gone down for 5 minutes or more in the last 2 months. Actually, since I hate it so much, I should just switch hosting then, right? Excuse me for paying 2 years in advance and not realizing that when I am paying for a service, I should also be looking for another provider and IT guys to transfer our entire DATABASE of 50000K plus products, etc. to another hosting company while trying not to go down for an hour. Maybe I should do that right now? Oh, thats right, I can’t access my FTP!

Dreamhost - you guys have a major flop every few days. 500 errors all the time. Sometimes runs great but often users complain. I dont understand how this is a medium severity issue. Especially since the hosts went down yesterday as well… This is the final straw for the camel.

  44. 44

I think that people should see it as they are making there products and services better for the competition it is in with other hosting sites. Things get better through trial and error.
