Blingy Slowness Issues

We’ve continued to offload the problematic file server and loads across the cluster have actually looked quite good (almost all servers under a load of 5, many around 2-3 and only one was ever at or above 10) so we had hoped that we could restore snapshot backups for users on that server. Unfortunately the result increased the disk usage again on that file server to the point that is has been displaying the same symptoms as before. The good news is that the fix is simply a matter of disabling the backup snapshots again and then dropping that data. We’ve already done the disabling and are in the process of dropping - this is resulting in some very inflated loads across the cluster but as soon as we have completed this I’ll be issuing soft reboots (easier on the hardware) that will fix the loads you’re seeing as well as adding an update here. This should eliminate the performance issues that have been reported (we’ll just have to get that particular file server even lower before we restore those snapshots again). My apologies for this and for the concerns that it has caused.

Update: The utilization is already down from 93% to 92% but this is multiple TB of data at issue so it may take a few hours to complete the dropping of the data. I’ll be keeping an eye on it and rebooting any servers that appear to need extra attention (changes like this often result in that extra step being needed to stabilize things). There will be another update once we’re satisfied that things are fixed.

Update: We’re now back down to 89% - I am still seeing load issues so we’re not out of the woods yet but once the process completes we’ll know if that did it or not (I will continue to update).

Update: Utilization is at 87% and loads have improved so I am updating the severity to medium but not marking it resolved as we still need to see the loads and performance back to what they were a week ago.

Update Tuesday, May 13th: Utilization crept back up (it appears that there were still some rules on the file server leading to creation of the snapshots we deleted, these have been removed and the deletion process is underway again). The admin team is also looking into completely removing this file server from the system (for now we intend to keep offloading it non-stop to ensure that no more issues crop up).

Update Thursday, May 15th: The snapshot data is gone and loads have dropped back to what they should be but we’re going to be moving people off of that file server (we have new hardware coming in that should allow us to completely offload it and eventually scrap it).

Update May 21st:  Looks as though the offloading of the filers got a bit backed up over the weekend and has caused the utilization to go back up to the point where it is causing issues again. We are continually doing offloads and working on the servers that are being affected.

5. masya Says:

Guys - how long can I tolerate this blingy - pls do smth ah?

6. Rick H Says:

Guys… I love you, but this is killing me. I’m not going to pretend I have my entire life on my server, I just wish that there was more uptime, that’s all.
It’s why I have all my money-making stuff on a VPS at another place…. I just wish Dreamhost would keep up with that for uptime.

7. Rob Spangler Says:

hey, I don’t know if you heard but I think that guy who left the 2nd comment’s site is down.

8. Eric Says:

Rick, your DH plan costs ~$10 per month. Even a cheap VPS is more. Quite simply, you get what you pay for. A $10 web host is not going to give the same uptime as Mosso; who’s $100 / month. But for the price, DH’s uptime is pretty damn good.

And isn’t Blingy a mail server? So it’s not like you’re even missing out on all that much.

9. Rick H Says:

@Eric - blingy would be the cluster, not just a mail server. If you read back on the blog they describe it as a “super server,” its structured differently than the rest of their clusters (and most clusters I’ve seen).

I’m very much aware that $9 and change a month gets me cheaper service - I was expressing my wishes that there would just be lower load times, a bit more uptime, that’s all.

I have a VPS at another provider, and I’m well aware of what they cost; I just can’t justify that cost for my personal stuff.

10. Jim Smith Says:

I have a dreamhost account, 4 dedicated servers, and 3 VPS. I love dreamhost, there’s no way I would get rid of it.

My Dedicated servers are all across the world, VPS are in Germany. I’m paying $270/month all together.

Don’t complain about a $10 service, $10 service doesnt provide you with the uptime you need… it’s time to upgrade to a VPS elsewhere (WHICH CAN HAVE THE SAME ISSUES MIND YOU!)

11. Rick H Says:

See, this is why I stick with dreamhost for the shared stuff.

3 hours and the downtime is already reduced by 60%…. WAY better track record than my old host!

12. ADS Says:

All my sites are running very slowly. 1 in particular has 1 image (50K) and 4 words, and it take 15 seconds to load.
This is BAD FOR BUSINESS.

:-( No too happy )>;-(

13. Justin Says:

It’s a pain in the derrière, but I’m really appreciative with the fact that they’re being very honest about it. Just please fix it soon?

14. Dan Says:

How does one determine the load on one’s server? Is it an ssh command or something I can get from the panel?

Man, we have a long way to go on this one to get to 1500 posts….

15. Jake Says:

20. robert eiserloh Says:

Another site i host with DH is down again, never have had down time this much with any other host.

I believe it is time to move yet another site to bluehost. (the last site i moved there from DH has had ZERO issues. In fact no site i have there has ever had downtime.)

When i get the time, i am out of here never to return.

21. Dan Says:

Bye Robert! I guess this means we won’t be subjected to any more of your spam, right? Why don’t you just post an explicit ad for Boohost and quit pretending that you’re giving us helpful advice. I like Dreamhost, thanks very much.

22. longlan Says:

slow..again..always slow !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

24. Eric Says:

Threatening to leave as if you’re the big bad wolf won’t do anything guys :-D

If anything, customers on your clusters such as yourself should be happy to see you gone; because it means more resources for us ;-)

25. J Johnston Says:

I moved a client’s site to Bluehost after reading about it here and other places, and the site was just slow in general and had a lot of problems similar to Dreamhost’s, only without ever being told what it was. Six hours to fix high load on a server one day.

I will give Bluehost credit though - they answered the phone when I called.

26. J Johnston Says:

To other readers/commenters. Since Dreamhost’s solution for a VPS is fairly limited and still relies on the general SQL servers, etc, does anyone have a suggestion for a hosting company that’s good to use in the $30-60 a month range that offers a bit more stability with a VPS? I really wish Dreamhost had some kind of “low density server” option, because the panel DH offers is just great. Any time I see cPanel I want to punch a UI designer.

I have paid using google checkout. But I want my refund in my paypal account. Is that possible. If anyone kows please help me. I have my last 3 days of money back guaranty. And I want to move away. Not because dreamhost is bad, but because blingy is bad. My friends dreamhost account is running simply great, but blingy is ill-stared.

29. Dave Says:

Yeah, just paid my account yesterday … site unusable … refunds?

30. Manu Says:

31. pundit Says:

Spacey is slow to the point that it equals having no service. Have i missed something or misunderstood something? Spacey is like that since more than 24 hours. and spacey is not blingy … :-S

32. Jodi Says:

Unbelieveable - my site is so slow - if it was not my site - no way I would wait for it to load. DH are you on the case or not? Why is this taking over 24 hours to fix?

38. SteveintheUK Says:

May 11th 5.34pm in the UK, and this damn Blingy is not only still a piece of crap, now it won’t even load my site’s, one of them was even talked about on a podcast that has only just come out but due to this un-reliable cluster and company no one has been able to view it.

It’s been nearly two months now since Blingy started to die, just shoot the damn thing, throw it in the bin and replace it with something that actually works and does the you that we pay you for.

Stop wasting your time redesigning your front page and get this problem fixed once and for all, or just install some new clusters and move everybody of this one.

39. brian Says:

website is down!

I can remember the good ol days (last friday) when it actually worked. However, it did take more than 1 minute to open.

Let’s hope they get this fixed.

40. Jacob Says:

Sigh… I _just_ moved from a horrible host (Aplus.net), and now I am torn. I really love having my site here, but my option is “do I continue to deal with a horribly low site to stay with some great folks, or do I leave so I can actually see my site?”.

I’m going to give it a bit more time, but considering they feel that this is now a “medium severity” and I haven’t heard back from any of my new tickets, I’m leaning towards moving. I guess you get what you pay for these days… :(

41. Pundit Says:

I always had a good opinion of DH because you have shell access and all sort of stuff there; it was always clear that reliablity is the only bad point of DH.
For some time i checked their reliability via an external service (watchmouse.com) ; well, it said, that uptime was something like 95% (!). Never mind!
However, the situation now is really what we dreamed about, i guess. It could be minded.
Fact is, not only Blingy is affected; i am on the gigantic Spacey and since +24h symptoms here are the same as with Blingy i suppose.
This is really a hassle which you would consider avoiding even in the case you used it only as a secondary service…

42. tr Says:

Question for anyone who cares to answer it.
If the main shared-server service has this many problems (we moved to DH to get away from a horrible situation elsewhere and I have filed at least two dozen support tickets here) … is there really a likelihood it would be better on a VPS? I would spend the money but I have no way to know if that would be foolish or not, to keep the change in the same company … I’m a content person, not a techie, and I don’t know nearly enough to say “Hm, a hosting company that repeatedly has x types of problems is a bad place to say” or “hm, any hosting company will have x types of problems.” All I know is that our site continues to grow (though it’s local, not national, so our traffic will never be crazy-high) and it’s our sole source of income so I need to do whatever it takes to minimize downtime. Thank heavens this is happening on Sunday morning (we’re on the US west coast) but I was planning to go in and load content for the rest of the day so we could take a few hours off, and can’t do that now, not to mention what users ARE out there can’t get in …

43. Eric Says:

AFAIK, a virtual private server is on the same hardware as the other accounts; but you are guaranteed resources. So that says to me that with a VPS you would escape some problems, but not all.

Please, correct me if I’m wrong; I’m new to the web world.

44. cyryl Says:

Just great :|

45. ADS Says:

I am on my way out!
The service started off just fine, the BOOM!!!
No sites, no replies, no confidence in DH.

It might have a severity of “Medium” to them, but to myself and ‘I’m sure’ many others, this is a High Level issues.
I would not feel comfortable putting my clients on this server, when 1 of may pages is about 14k in size and it takes over 25 seconds to load.

————-

To all those that say you get what you pay for. (BS TO YOU)
DH is ~$10. If you ‘google’ the word “hosting” the very first link is “www.Top-10-Web-Hosting.com” and ALL of them are less than
DH.

50. KevinBooth Says:

hey, I may not be an uber user or developer here, but I do know that it shouldn’t be this hard to get a hello world html to show in less than a few seconds. It took 3 and a bit for a simple html with the phrase the site is currently under construction. Not kool.

I know I can’t expect alot, but for what I’m paying, compared to what I’m getting, I could use a few comps I have lying around, setup my own crap cluster, hook up a super cheap dialup connection (seeing as that’s the speed of the connection my “server” is making use of.), and have everything run a shit load smoother than what I have here. I don’t want the hassle, that’s why you guys make so much money (as you so clearly pointed out here ==> http://blog.dreamhost.com/2005/08/08/why-web-hosting-is-easy/ ).

a couple little quotes I like.

quote: “And yet, when you get to a certain size (like say, DreamHost size) the cost to provide that service is itty bitty. Our data center and network expenses, i.e. our “Cost of Revenue”, is about 5% of our total revenues.. and it drops every year.”

quote: “You can survive a lot of stupidity when you’re able to mark everything up 2000%…”

Well if your making so much off of us, and your clearly not advertising on the level of GoDaddy, then it’s clear your fucking us good and hard in the ass and getting us to tell you we love you when your done for the day. P

PLEASE JUST SPEND SOME OF YOUR “RIDICULOUS” PROFIT MARGIN ON A LITTLE BIT EXTRA INFRASTRUCTURE! perhaps even spread the new users across a couple of new servers (gasp what a thoght), so that if one is being a gimp you can migrate the users to open and stable territory while you break in the horse that’s stampeding in your customer’s yards.

Or you can give me a discount, let’s say 40-60%. bring your margin back down to a reasonable 20-30% net. Sounds fair IMHO.
So provide the service offered to us, or perhaps a little talk about class action lawsuit should be involved. At best this is negligence, at worst fraud.

(btw, I’m just trying to redevelop my webdev skills and get a foot out onto the web. If you can’t supported that for the money I pay, then you should probably look for another business to get into. Think back to geocities, ad supported and did not have the frequent issues like this to my recollection.)

my client’s site has been down since last night.

ive sent two ’support” inquiries, and gotten zero responses.

a couple months ago, a client’s site was down for three days…and this fuck up happened on the day i recommended he use dh as his hosting service.

i can understand there will be occasional breakdowns…but this situation — and the lack of any response to two successive inquires — is ridiculously unprofessinal, and is impacting my business and reputation.

theres nothing i can do but ask my client to be patient.

but im afraid i cannot recommend DH to any further clients in the future.

57. Rob Spangler Says:

Yeah… I don’t think this is a “Medium” Issue anymore… It’s so slow that sites are not usable. Please help us out Dreamhost!! Blingy is literally dying, between the horrible outages a month or so back and now this…

It’s unfortunate that the cluster with the new guys is the one taking hits. Didn’t you guys get your free 3 months hosting credit? Or were you too busy whining to notice that it was offered to you?

This is not a regular happening. I’ve noticed that my uptime is excellent.

DreamHost screwed up here. They did something trying to make things run better, and the reverse happened. If you want to leave, I’m not stopping you. It’ll just make Blingy better than ever.

63. Jacob Says:

I feel bad for the DH guys, really. They are funny, act like humans rather than mindless corporate zombies, and are very polite. I’ve read quite a few blogs around the web about problems like this that have been occurring over the years. If this were a larger, more established host, this problem would have been resolved within an hour or less.

Isn’t there something that they can do? Kill the site(s) that are taking the server down and move them to another server of their own? This is how scaling works… if a server is running out of resources, it’s time to split it up a bit and spread the love.

I’m actually considering spending the extra $ to get a dedicated or a VPS so I can spend time on my site when I want to (my plans this weekend to work on it have went to hell). A great solution for DH would be to provide their customers with this service/option for upgrading so they can stay with them rather than having to leave to a host that provides it.

Much, much more responsive even with these numbers, on birdo.

65. Eric ]fish[ Says:

Jacob, the problem isn’t so much caused by bad sites but by bad software.

I agree that they need to slim down the price on VPS.

Blog install goes fine. Then servers all goto hell. Someone recomended Dreamhost to me originally and I’ve told others about it because I like the people behind the company. Unfortunately you can only go so far on just liking the people. I need to like the service too guys. Help me like the service! Help me think you guys are doing something! Help by atleast sending a semi automated looking email with an ETA or SOMETHING.. just help?

81. Mistress Emilie Says:

My site has been painfully slow, and up and down for days, like everyone else here. But now it has been down for almost an hour! No replies to my help requests. No status updates for several hours now. I’ve been using DreamHost for a year with no major mishaps. I really do hope this gets fixed within the next few hours at least.

82. Eric Says:

My drupal installation isn’t sending out any emails, could this be the reason why?

If Blingy is your mailman, yes. Just like if the USPS truck’s tires got popped, you won’t receive your paycheck.

Blah blah blah no response blah blah blah to my emails blah blah blah

They KNOW you’re having a problem after the 1st email. Think of it this way:
Your girl breaks up with you, and doesn’t respond to your emails. So you send another one. And another one. And another one. It’s to the point where emails won’t help your situation, but will annoy the hell out of the recipient.

Update: Utilization is at 87% and loads have improved so I am updating the severity to medium but not marking it resolved as we still need to see the loads and performance back to what they were a week ago.

I love Dreamhost for easy domaion registrations and adding new sites, I love the panel, I like the honest reporting on problems. But the severe downtimes and slowdowns are killing me!!!
Happens that my Dreamhost-hosted sites suddenly gained more popularity than my main site hosted on a dedicated server in Europe. So uptime and speed is life and death matter for me. When the sites are up, I’m making money, when they are down I make nothing and members are screaming at me and leaving, making me lose money.

Today, I’m losing even one franchiser, simply because theguys being unable to upload his site.

I believe Dreamhost might well start cashing in, offering some gradual scalability toward higher end service. Clients might grow with Dremhost and Dremhost might well grow with it’s successful clients (like me LOL).

Seriously, 10 bucks a month is great for starting things so I did sign up and started. In just six weeks, my two of my new sites skyrocketed in popularity and became a serious business. Now, there’s a glitch - I don’t want to abandon Dremhost, but the severe and frequent downtimes cost me a hell lot of money!

I would very much like to see better quality of service and I am perfectly willing to pay more. Only there’s no reasonable scale of options. 10 bucks for budget shared hosting or 300 bucks/month dedicated. I’m not quite ready to go dedicated, but if I get more speed, 99% uptime and a bit more space, I’m perfectly willing to pay more.

I signed up for the PRIVATE SERVER, but no reaction yet.

Hey guys - let’s create mopre options!!! I want to give you more money - but I need UPTIME!!!!!

109. Arlo Says:

J Johnston: Westhost offers a “semi-dedicated” plan which is a server with a maximum of 20 accounts for $55/month. Their custom control panel is not as comprehensive as Dreamhost’s, but it has a nicer interface than cPanel or Plesk. And they offer 24/7 phone and chat support with more experienced techs than I’ve found here.

Westhost.com … no affiliate link, just an honest recommendation. I’ve moved most of my clients there over the past year and I just have a couple left to go.

1 day 6 hours since I placed the ticket. I’m getting pretty annoyed, aside from my site getting faster to respond. Still takes 1/2 hour to do 10 minutes work though.
please please please replace the damn hardware. You’re already doing it for others (bitters…). Time for Blingy the shit steed to be put down.

113. LMSX Says:

im out of Dreamhost, its obvious that 9dl hosting for so many resources will crash servers always. Is unreal an impossible to offer this kind of package, normally would cost like 15dls.

But the severe downtimes and slowdowns are killing my image, my sites, even my time on some testings! I need your SSH accounts. You are just best one.

I believe Dreamhost might well start cashing in, offering some gradual scalability toward higher end service. Clients might grow with Dreamhost and Dreamhost might well grow with it’s successful clients (like me LOL). Please DH - I WANT to give you more money - I’m friendly asking you - PLEASE gimme 200GB/2TB for $20/m (instead of 50/500 for $6) withOUT any discounts, refferrer, anything. Just I want to have 15minutes average load max. 3 (not 100), to have SFTP and SSH 99,9% (only) avalaible. Fast Joomla sites 99,9% of time. Or - np if I got YEARLY 2*3 hours OFF + 1*1day unusable for $20 (not $6, not $2 - tnx to refferal). I can even live withOUT support mailz (e.g. 3 unpayed mails/year - all other = $3) - np for me.

But me and mine friends (have other DH WEB_ID accounts - from old frisky times) will leave - if your services will not improve within 2 months. I’m NOT threatening you. I will let you money (not asking back). I will CRY!!! It will be my sad day. But I leave - I will never come back, I will never recommend some1 to join you. We both loose - vry much. I’m very patiently and friendly asking you to improve your uptime/main_service = A V A LA I B I L I T Y

This is getting ridiculous.

122. Skoob Says:

Hey guys, don’t label this issue as MEDIUM SEVERITY when for me and everybody else here, this foul up is pretty SEVERE or even CRITICAL.

Chatty newsletters and grand community gestures are all fine but the bottom line here is THE BOTTOM LINE - we’re paying for a service that we don’t get. Never mind whether DH is budget hosting option or not, the fact is that we’re paying for something that isn’t delivered.

How about transferring everyone off Blingy and just trashing it - end of! I’m not interested in more credit notes or yet more requests to hang on, I just want the hosting solution I’ve already paid for.

123. chris Says:

I have a couple sites that have been basically unreachable for several weeks. I’m running daily remote pings and I’m seeing response times in the tens of thousands of seconds. I go to open a ticket and I get the generic message that there are known issues. WTF? Will this ever get fixed or should I move to another host?

124. RickD Says:

yep, things sucked again this morning. Still not great.

And this is NOT medium. I’ve got client sites that won’t load or take 30 seconds to start transferring data. It’s the middle of business hours and they are SCREAMING at me. This is the last thing I need. And I recommended they go with dreamhost… Now I’m kicking myself.

I opened an account with AN Hosting - but you have to get support to edit your DNS there, even so - as soon as my domains there are set up, I’m moving everything off dreamhost for good and to AN as a temporary solution. This is the last straw.

Anyone know of a GOOD host that will:
A. let you edit your own DNS info
B. has an uptime guarantee?

+++++

Usage is raising up - as I predicted - it is over 94 % (when you began to “solve the problem” it was about 90% and you written 87%) and will reach 95% today :(

Not mentioned that only 20? new users (u get 50 every day?) can fill it up to 100% within your rules and TOS and SLA.

How much is it worth to throw away that blingy shit? US $5000 or $30000. Is it worth your image, isn’t it? To have xyz (10.000?) very unhappy vs. fully satisfied customers?

You were excellent service till issue in 2005 - OK, shit happens.
Than 2006 summer - OK, not your fault and can happens to anyone, also HG, BH had their problems in 2006/2007, too.
That that billing (and not fast solving) issue costs you much money and losed reputation. Many left. Still OK - if nothing more happens in 2008, maybe 2009, too.

But then you decide to buy blingy crap. Really - blog about how much you saved? Problems arise in February - no solving. Critical March and April - 3 weeks of web down! And you solve it only for few weeks than problems again?
Is it really worth your time/money/reputation??? Really!!??? I can’t believe! Just sell it back to seller/anyone/on ebay [even for half a price you bought it] and buy a new one stuff like you had in old clusters {of course, do it in opposite order :)}.

DH says, “The admin team is also looking into completely removing this file server from the system ….”

Now THAT’S a good idea.

133. Geoff Says:

“The admin team is also looking into completely removing this file server from the system…”

I am all for this. I would really appreciate it, as I think all of us on Blingy would. It would seriously help heal the old (and new) wounds from slowness.

134. ella Says:

I think it’s a great idea too. My site’s unusable. Again. Nothing will load. This had gotten old a couple months ago, now it’s plain old bad business for DH to let this continue.

135. frank Says:

Finally we are going get moved to another server? Really? It’s been a hell waiting to load a simple HTML page on blingy from long long long time ago.

136. Vaclav Says:

Dreamhost is absolute, complete disaster.
I guess the idea of class-action that someone published here wasn’t that bad after all.

Support is NOT responsive, NOT reponding to anything, sites down.

WARNING - DO NOT GO FOR THE PRIVATE SERVER OPTION!!!

My sites were slow but at least they were there whan I was paying cheap for shared hosting.
Now I’m on expensive PRIVATE SERVER and everyhthing just went to HELL. All mu sites are down, I started asking for HELP in the morning, now the whole day os gone and NOTHING - not ever response.

I’ve tried to find some phone number to call Dreamhost and ask what the hell they are doing, why they are doing nothing. I discovered that they do NOT EVEN PUBLISH A PHONE NUMBER!!!

Adding more and more support ticket is useless. Jesus Christ!

From today on, I’m gonna start systematically destroy reputation of Dreamhost in alll webmaster’s forums I can find. What else I can do? My sites are down, my subscribers are cancelling in droves, my sales went to zero and on top of that I lost a great contract with one adult network for processing their signups, thing that I’ve been working months for.

I believe that it is well possible to day that Dreamhost is EVIL irresponsible company, acting with criminal negligence.

137. ramin Says:

yay for new hardware!!

138. Ryan Friedrich Says:

Sigh. Shit happens in the IT world. It is as predictable as complete chaos. I bitched because my site went down. I may not be losing customers or whatnot but it’s fixed. What I’ve come to respect about DreamHost is the lack of automated response emails Ive recieved. I filed the problem to them and even though it took 4-5 days to get a response the tech told me “First off I would like to apologize for the late reply here. I have been working on getting you a final solution rather than attempting to tell you that we were working on this issue.” .. and it was fixed. It was actually fixed 2 days before that.

I forget what you call that. I think it’s called Honesty. Atleast they were honest with me. I’d rather that then some Indian prick who reads out of a book what his response to your question should be.

Clearly not. I don’t think DH should expect me to pay when my service is available only about half the time. I have people complaining left and right about this crap. I’ve sent a support ticket off to ask to be moved or to have some sort of action taking place. This definitely still an open issue.
