a few spunky DreamHostPS servers moving to new homes

Posted (May 21st, 2008 at 3:05 am PST) by kitchen

The hard drive failed in one of our DreamHostPS host machines and we’re working on moving it over to new hardware to get things back up and running smoothly.

The affected servers are:
bombadil boybutter burn diaryoapg emn headhunter muhammadiya poto sugardoodle tommy_the_cat

If you are on one of those machines, please be patient while we work to get them back up and running.

We will post updates here as things progress.

Update 6:12am pacifit: Sorry for the additional delay on this matter. The target machine we were moving these all to also had hardware problems, and we had to unbox and prep a new machine for them to get put on to. We will continue to post updates as things progress.

Update: 7:57am pacific: Things are coming together now, we should have everything up on these very shortly.

what about megaman?

what about caesar?

All my sites are:

Service Temporarily Unavailable

The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.

Does this have something to do with your moving???

WTF is going on??

Our site has been down for more or less two days now and not a word from support. Before this we’ve continuously had problems with slow loading and downtime since we’re on Blingy. Wondering when the problems will be solved…

at least we are moving to some nicer places. Hope DH has more and more nicer places for us.

Caesar is spotty for me too…

I been messin’ with computers since 1985 and I know one thing certain and two things sure: something will break. It’s the one true constant.

I also know that the people at DH working on the problem would be sweating bullets right now, if the server room wasn’t kept so cold. I also know they aren’t sitting on their hands. eating from a Deluxe Sushi Platter and drinking endless Sakis, pointing and laughing at the broken server. Unlike the way some hosters I have experienced along The Way may well have handled trouble tickets. I mean, it certainly would have accounted for their times to resolution.

One thing I know about fixing those damned infernal boxes, since I do it myself, is that they are fixed, up and running when they are goddamned good and ready. In their own time, as they say. Not one second less. In the meantime, if you are the one fixing them in a high-pressure situation, you die a little more each second that goes by and off on the side of your brain, dream of that first beer that awaits you when you finally get off work. Sometimes in 12 hours or so. If you are lucky and things go well and the failing server didn’t kick up a cloud of other problems up and down the line.

The last thing I know is that sometimes I think that life might have been easier if I had stuck to doing something simpler, like transmuting lead into gold.

@T. Scheisskopf: actually, it’s Sake ;)

Anyone have problems on voldo, my site takes 30+ seconds to load. :(

“Severity: Low”

You DH guys are joking, no!?

Well, this is it. I’ve got a client on Birdo and here’s the current load:

load average: 123.93, 98.83, 98.79

He was up 4 hours trying to upload a video last night. I’ve been trying to offload him to another server for 2 days now, but Dreamhost can’t even keep the load on birdo down long enough.

This is probably the single largest clusterf*** I’ve ever dealt with on a web host.

I’ve defended DH for weeks, happy about the transparency and openness that usually seems to work out. Usually, things seemed quick. But lately, something at Dreamhost is -broken-, and it’s not just the blingy fileserver. Supposedly, my client’s site was moved -off- blingy a week ago. I’m done… as soon as they let me _escape_.

my website is down !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is the control panel down or something? I’ve been trying to do some housekeeping and nothing seems to respond, everything I try to access is slow as all hell, i.e. one-click installs, mysql, etc.

Website is down. Dreamhost is Down. Panel is down. Nothing works here.

Hopeless. I’ve been with these guys for 4 years, and I’m not a heavy user. On the rare occasions I want to use the control panel, the frigging thing never works properly. Time to look for another host, methinks.

Site works fine, just the panel is down :’(

My website is still down…

all the other websites that was on the same server than my are up, but mine it’s still down!!!

please check it as soon as possible!!

Thanks!!!

anyone has opinion on how BlueHost this days?

I have some sites on Bluehost… mainly due to heritage from previous webmasters… its ok, but when something goes wrong they mostly keep you on the dark… you may contact support and they will give you just a small reference as to what the real problem is. They make you feel that the stuff going on is just out of your comprehension…

Its cheap though… but I have so much freedom and control over my sites and servers on DH that I wouldn’t leave anytime soon. And DH is just as affordable with more features.

Up time is about the same on DH and BH… with DH winning on the Web side, and BH on the email side…

is just me, or “blingly” is nocking the door to the death, and no one reports here in the blog?
I opened a ticke 4 hours ago, and the feedback is the same if I had sent a email to the Pope… that means, no feedback at all…

please fix thiiiis

Well.
People tell me my website was visible this morning,
But now, It is not.

Is this the same problem of switching hardware?

@ Sharon:

Thanks for the details. Uptime in DH? I think you are a bit mistaken. Have you noticed the outage today?

@ Sharon:

by the way, you website is very speedy. is it on shared hosting or a dedicated server?

I’ve been down all day and get the following message. I’ve sent 4 email to support and have not received acknowledgment that any of them have been received.

The error message:
Error establishing a database connection

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at mysql.xtremerecruiting.tv. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

* Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
* Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
* Are you sure that the database server is running?

If you’re unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.

i’ve got a 6-8 hour delay on emails. no mention of that here anywhere on the blog.

My sites on bonk have all been incredibly slow the last few days. Is this related?

I’m seeing this same issue…

I logged in to the panel to make some edits for a friend who owns two sites that you host, gave myself admin privileges FTPd to the sites and found empty directories. Both of his sites have disappeared. I’m hoping that this is a result of your server migration. I also noticed that one of the domains was on a DH proxy server earlier. I’m just hoping that the sites will show up again soon.

I just upgraded to PS (volentarily) last week, and since yesterday I have been greeted with 503 Service Temporarily Down every now and then. This is really bad. What makes it worst is that thier welcome email mentioned that I would probably see such things happening and that it is a sign that I will need to increase RAM/CPU. Now that’s downright creepy. And decietfull, as if it’s designed so that people would take PS and start increasing their resource utilization.

I was perfectly fine with shared. Never ever received an email from DH saying I am using way too much resource or that I would need to PS. I have been with them for 4 years. If I start receiving complain for from them after moving back to shared (I have already requested to be moved back to shared), I will definitely blog about it in detail.

The main issue I have noted is that tons of dhapache instances are spawned, and each instance it taking up 20 Megs. What makes it worst is that they are all sleeping and not even used, but simply eats up memory. I have collected all the results I got from running top and is waiting for reply from DH.

Btw, how do I know if I am on blingy or not? Don’t know if I am on spunky either. How do I find out?

To Costumer

prubaja.com is on a shared server. =)
