Blingy problems

Posted (May 21st, 2008 at 2:30 pm PST) by Ralph

Some of you are well aware of the problems we have been dealing with on the blingy cluster:

http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/index.php?s=blingy

The troublesome file server is causing problems again. The majority of issues today were caused by our efforts to completely offload the problematic file server onto more reliable hardware. Our moves, unfortunately, overloaded the file server. We have cut back on the amount of concurrent moves we are running and blingy servers are catching back up again. Unfortunately, this issue will not be resolved until we get the problem file server completely out of the loop, which is a slow process.

Update: Just wanted to note that if you are in the blingy cluster, submitted a support ticket but have not received a reply do not fear we are working on your problem. We are moving everyone who has written in so once we have an update we will reply to your message. Sorry for the delay in the support tickets.

Update 5-22: Some of you have been writing in that your data is missing from the wycliffe glob. This was due to a move that did not complete correctly. The good news is that we still have all of your files and everything will be appearing again shortly. The bad news is that you will still be on the old file server. Once your sites are working again, we will be starting the migration over (which should run seamlessly in the background) to get you off of titanic and onto a stable netapp.

Update 5-26: We were able to complete a decent amount of moves this weekend but the process is still ongoing. For those of you on wycliffe there is still some moving to be done. We thought wycliffe would be done today at some point, but it seems like a few more days of moving before that is complete. We thank you for your patience as we move you to the new file server.

Update 5-27: Problems have increased today unfortunately as our moves keep running. The problem is that after we move the data, we have a system that goes through and makes sure there was no lost data. So moving data essentially takes 3 times longer than your normal copy. With the wycliffe glob, the biggest glob in Blingy, this turned out to be a major issue as we are not actually removing the data from the server until the data is all moved over successfully. This means that even though data is moving, it is not freeing up the space we need for the problem file server to work correctly. So right now we are working on the accounts that have already moved, and pause the rest of the move so that we can move some smaller globs faster. So we are still running moves, we are just not removing data of the problem file server fast enough which is unfortunately causing the problems currently being experienced in the blingy cluster. We will get his calmed down as fast as we can and continue our efforts.

Update 6-12: For the most part blingy problems have been limited to minor issues. We are still continuing the moves that will get the problem file server out of active service. This is a lengthy process, but so far moves have been successful and service is getting better.

Update 7-30: The blingy cluster has been stable for over a month. Although we are continuing to offload the blue arc (it’s HUGE), there are no current issues with the job it’s doing. Please report any issues you have with your service to support and thank you very much for bearing with us through this.

better to contact support than post comment to the status site.

Yes, you are 100% right…

We’re on conker, and it’s been unusable all day. It takes it several minutes to serve a simple web page. Logging into the server, its load average is up over 100 sometimes. This qualifies as a major outage, from our point of view! Help!!!

We are on ermac and we have several slowness problems. HELP!!!

We’re also on conker experiencing ridiculous load times. Here’s hoping things get moved quickly as it’s killing us to try to work on the site currently.

MEDIUM? this should be marked as HIGH considering whats gone before… this problem is getting boring

you guys go down more than a drunken whore. I’m sick of this crap! My sites are down more than they are up and you guys really aren’t worth it anymore. You don’t give a crap about people’s businesses or your relationship with your customers and you are failing all around.

anyone know the protocol for getting refund? i want to get off and out of DH.
i have asked in my tickets for them to direct me as to how this should be initiated but they just ignore my request and tell me everything is going to be ok.

Here we go again.

FTP Login incorrect !!!!!!!!!!

I had a lot of faith during my SHORT stay here, but hearing all the news from word of mouth /reading these posts and frustratingly SLOW web experience has forced me to leave. goodbye!

No crap… i’m out too very, very soon. My site has been down almost 48 hours now. I am so freaking frustrated and pissed off that it took 1 day to even get a response to my query. Oh, and they lied about what the problem was too. I sent another query about 12 hours ago and am still awaiting any type of response.

I’m so over this and dreamhost and, believe me, there will be a post on my blog discussing what’s happened.

Help, please! I have not been able to get to my e-mail for more than five hours now. This is costing me money, guys.

blingy is too bad~. :(, I hope that dreamhost guys can fix it quickly.

I’ve been having problem accessing my site since monday. This downtime is unacceptable.

I am running social networking portal website and some other ecommerce websites, but due to DH down down & down, I am suffering from loosing my users……

Jangan beli hosting di dreamhost buat web serius… sering banget down yakin deh…
kalau cuma buat web sampah sih gapapa

I’m beyond frustrated. I’ve been with Dreamhost since Jan. and my site has never been reliable. I’m an author who used to get good traffic, and this is making me look ridiculous. My hits are way down lately. People have given up even visiting my blog. Does anyone know if there is a way to get money back if we prepaid?

I’ve been with DH since August, and I’ve been suffering with blingy’s problems since the start. when I first joined DH ROCKED! now, their awful, I have to constantly check the blog to see what is down at the moment, mostly e-mail, and that makes my clients VERY unhappy!

Dreamhost has been rubbish since I joined 4 months ago, I stupidly thought they’d get better before my 90 days was up, what a mistake. Fecking jokers…

Why people don’t send support tickets as opposed to bitching here is beyond me. They’ve said that people who’ve messaged in are getting moved, so surely you should file a ticket about this and get some form of priority, yeah? >__>

Also, I’m wondering, how do you get it to show server loads?

When this blingy will die?

I’ve send a support ticket and just don’t understand why don’t take the whole blingy off?!?! I’d rather have a planned 24 hours downtime, than 4 hour of on and off slowness and down time - every 4 days!!!

Joanna: I guess everybody did send support ticket. But there is no response.
I already send my support ticket since Tuesday. Nothing is being done until today (Thursday)

May 22nd, 2008 at 5:47 amBrian (not #9) Says:

I got a form response from DH regarding this issue yesterday when I submitted a support ticket (before the post here on status):

Hello,

This message is to inform you that your support inquiry has been moved to a separate support queue due to the specific issue you are experiencing.

If you’re receiving this message it is because we have reviewed your account and have determined that it is hosted on a problem file server. This file server is what is responsible for your site and email to be slow or unresponsive at times. We are in the process of offloading all the data from this file server onto brand new ones (which have proven to not experience these issues), but due to the massive amounts of data being transferred, the process is slow going. By moving your message to this separate queue, it will allow us to process your move to these new file servers faster than if you had to wait for our automated move to get to you. Due to the nature of how these moves need to be processed we can’t guarantee when you will actually be moved though. In general it’s within 2 weeks of when a customer has sent in a support request about this problem. Please keep note of the date you sent this message in, as we are moving customers based on the date they sent in their support request. We will be updating this status post frequently with information on what accounts have been moved:

http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/2008/05/21/blingy-problems

I’m sorry that we dont have any additional information at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused for you and assure you that this issue is at the top of our priority list.

Thank you for your continued patience,
The Happy DreamHost Blingy Fixing Team

The good news is that Scorpion is being fairly responsive for now, but it’s only 8:45AM EDT. I guess we’ll see how much it slows down later today as the load increases. Current load avgs are 3.28, 10.90, 9.37.

Where can you see the load averages?

28,

Get into your ssh console and use the “uptime” command.

I’m getting “no such directory” on home directory right now… wonder if they’re moving stuff.

my files have been wiped clean, all that’s in there now is my mail dir… just a few minutes ago one of my main folders re-appeared but with nothing in it… my site is totally inaccessible right now. DH, are you working on things now? some notice would have been a good idea…

Same stuff… all my domains gives back a

“403 Forbidden - You don’t have permission to access / on this server” error

just before that they were working pretty good.. hope that this is all due to moving customers to the new hardware and what we now experience will be payed by no more slowness in future!

I’m in the same boat, everything got wiped out today without warning.

At this point my 10+ sites are all 403 . . . here’s hoping this is temporary and the fix is underway.

Up until this week, my DH experience was spotless. Now I’m starting to question the choice to go with them.

Sigh.

We’re on ermac and thing are better now… thanks you DH! But please take measures so everything get fixed asap. Those incidents must be not so repetitive, we lost many users!!

everything is running fast now, dreamhost did a great job this time by taking action quickly

Now my site is completely missing … just get “/ was not found on this server” WTF guys?

My site was up briefly a couple of hours ago. But it went down again now.
It’s been 2 days already. What is taking so long?

megaman it’s down again ;/

This sucks, can’t even view an image on my hosting, nor enter FTP no nothing! Come on, been slow for days and now it just doesn’t work…

My client’s site on blingy/birdo is completely dead right now.

They emailed me last week telling me that it was being moved to another cluster after I practically begged them to move it, and that it should only take a few hours. However, it seems like it’s still having the Blingy problems. Right now, the site is completely unavailable.

Hi all, I had slow sites before here, but I thought this was solved. This is very important. I will lose clients and money! Please fix this!

I switched to you guys thinking things here were great, and now I am getting to explain this to my clients… help!

mkwick:

I’m moving all my clients off. I defended these guys for months, but got completely screwed. I only have one client with major uptime requirements on DH, but they’re the one stuck on this cursed cluster. As it stands now, the site is completely and utterly down and I used the first “people are dying!” level of any of the problems I’ve had with DH. But nothing from DH at all.

As soon as the site is back for a few minutes, I’m doing an emergency dump and transfer to a new host today.

May 22nd, 2008 at 12:50 pmBlingy-Megaman Says:

We’re completely down for the count.

@Rick D -

I am also having this problem - when I FTP in to my site, it’s literally gone. This feels worse than merely an outage. Has anyone else experienced this and had the files return unharmed? Just looking for solace.

yeah, it feels real good to have a $50 a month PS site down

getting an empty index in HTTP and http://FTP. makes us look like idiots.

On the one hand, I appreciate that I’m being moved to a server with a current load of .35 instead of 114.7, but on the other hand I preferably would’ve liked to have known *before* all my sites vanished that I was going to have some downtime, so I could tell my users not to expect to use things for a little bit.

now that DH wants me to pay $50 a month i expect 99% uptime dammit

make that 99.9……..really it seems like things are going downhill, which is amazing cause they were never stable

site still down for me… has been over 4 hrs since first reported to support

Mine are back up, thanks…. but yes, please, please, send an email to us *before* you do such a move and 403 errors abound. I could have moved the critical sites to another server and had it redirected. Thus avoiding apology emails tomorrow,.. I could of looked cool at least avoiding the problem. Anyhow, I can at least sleep now. I am going to hang in there…., hoping that this was a rare thing.

May 22nd, 2008 at 3:09 pmBlingy-Megaman Says:

We are back up again, and loads are pretty good too.

15:08:32 up 13:47, 3 users, load average: 2.46, 2.75, 2.39

Still missing files though, but at least we’re no longer dead.

Dreamhost, my websites are running perfectly!! this is the first time in 3 months that I actually feels that you are a serious company! thank you ! thank you ! thank you! kill that damn blingy server and don’t turn it on ever again!

It would also be nice if Dreamhost had the latest PHP installed as well

Hmm…..for a while there, my mail was unavailable, but I had a temporary inbox with 4 messages. Once it transitioned back, I had my old mail, but not those new messages….how many did I lose?

Pretty good speed now!!
Good work

Back online and everything is looking great.

My email is back working (it’s on the blingy server), but I am now getting an enormous amount of duplicate emails - and it’s not stopping - I’m up to 360 of the same message. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

hahahaha i can’t believe you guys are still on this blingy server. As soon as they were down twice in 2 weeks at 3 days each i left. Sooooooooooo much better on the other side of the fence… and to #49 if you are paying $50 i’d go for a virtual private server. You can go through hostgator or many other sites. I use Servint and i love it.

Dammit. I sent them a complaint about moving my onto another srerver, saying I don’t want an automatic e-mail, I want a REAL person, and what do they do, send me an automated message:
http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/2008/05/21/blingy-problems

Also states im on a “problematic file sever” like geez, ya think?

All sites down again…

As i said - I hope they will replace it.
Is it really worth your time/money/reputation??? Really!!??? I can’t believe! Just sell it back to seller/anyone/on ebay [even for half a price you bought it] and buy a new one stuff like you had in old clusters {of course, do it in opposite order :)}.

No database… =(

All sites down

It’s more time to resolve a problem…. and very big problem…………..

My sites will not load on my computer - it just hangs on connecting - then I get no response from the sever - however for some reason it works on other peoples computers? I don’t understand, I have two websites http://www.adamcartlidge.com and http://www.tucandeo.com = my portfolio works fine, and loads quickly, but tucandeo won’t show a thing? Can you guys check and give me some feedback? Dreamhost will not answer me, and my email client wil not connect either - this is a disaster, I’ve had nothing but problems with this.

Adam.

All 10 websites down ….. And no information from DH

All of my sites on ganon server are down :( :(

I have a feeling that when Blingy does finally get fixed, they’re going to fix it so well after this nightmare that it will be the cluster that put all other clusters to shame.

My sites are running great lately, with loads consistently under 2, usually under 1. Here’s the latest:

00:54:32 up 42 days, 20:15, 1 user, load average: 0.30, 0.59, 1.14

I have to say that overall, although I, like many on this cluster, managed to sign up just when the Titanic hit the iceberg, I’m fairly pleased with the way DH has handled it.

Oh, and Adam, your sites came up fine for me. No problem.

thanks Dan, I think the problem might even be something to do with my ISP - I am using Virgin Media and recently just upgraded to 8meg - for some reason I can’t connect using my home connection to email using my email client, or ftp or even view some of my sites - anyone any ideas what could be wrong? Someone mentioned my ISP could be blocking port 25? I’m lost! Help!

Hi Adam,

Well, tbe load on my service at DH is a present back in the stratosphere:
05:56:11 up 43 days, 1:16, 2 users, load average: 116.28, 85.76, 59.40

but such readings have never prevented me from accessing mail or http://ftp... Could it be a domain issue? When did you move on to DH?

Site is very slow. I don’t understand why it takes weeks to change servers?!?!? why???

Its looking ugly at the moment

5 users, load average: 61.40, 59.65, 50.85

**sigh**

May 27th, 2008 at 7:47 amMike Lightner Says:

On the machine which hosts my account server loads were at over 400 earlier today. Right now they’re hovering around 250+.

Well, once again…I seem to have no websites active. This is so critical…I cannot even log in with http://FTP. Come on guys, I am paying for hosting, and I am getting nothing but problems!

OMG
5 users, load average: 775.86, 614.03, 704.9

COuldn’t have happened at a worse time….

Many days ago my web site appears to be fixed, but suddenly today it wakes up SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW again. Load average is > 150 (yesterday it was a 3 or 4). The web site give no answers, just error 500.

What happens?????

We are in ermac.

Hi Dan,

What you just said completely lost me man! i’m a real novice with the technical side of things - basically the problem im having seems to be my isp - when i connect my computer at home using virgin media , entourouge will not connect and let me read mail - nor can i load the dreamhost web panel or my website http://www.tucandeo.com - however when i bring my computer into work, on a different isp, everything works fine! I really dont understand bro - im lost!

Thanks for your help man,

Best,

Adam.

Again!!!!! All sites down… Dreamhost, are you thinking to refund somehow your customers for the non-service given these days? Or you deel you are ok with just explaining were you are at non-fixing the issues?!?!?

Site was slow last week, emailed support 5 days ago - no response. Site is slow again today, emailed support - no response!

What should we do to get out sites back. Why it takes 3 months to replace one server! just one server!!!!

It seems to me that it would be faster, less painful for those of us out of service, and just easier overall to take the whole file share offline (it’s not like we’re getting service anyway), copy its contents without demand from users, and throw the new server online. Hell, even getting 50% of the accounts transferred would probably help tremendously. What gives???

What the heck??? this morning it was fscking speedy, all good, all working, now not even loading homepage! wtf???

I have been saying this through the support page as well……Just tell that you throw the whole server offline for a half day….copy what you can in 4 hours and put it back online again……

@86: no one this comments. if they don’t even respond to the support tickets, why they will respond to comments in the blog.

According to this, nothing happened today, and all the websites are working great.

websites may be working, but my companies email isn’t. I know Dreamhost is a shared service and will always be slower than a dedicated server. But C’mon, how is it possible that email just doesn’t work at all….. and when will it be working again…. as so many companies we need email to do business…. no business… no money….etc…

P.S. are they now recommending to use Gmail instead of their on email??????????

My website is up and fine, but email is completely offline. I wish it was the reverse since I need my email to do business. C’mon!

I don’t understand why they decide to mess with e-mail, of all things, in the middle of regular business hours rather than doing the server switch or whatever it is in the middle of the night. My e-mail is down, on average, for the bulk of the business day, at least once a week. Sometimes more than that. Then, miraculously, late in the evening - boom - back it comes. this is nutty. My clients are not impressed. I want an e-mail address attached to my domain name, of course, so switching to gmail would run quite counter to that. Bizarre.

mine in down and when is not down if slow slow slow…really bad service

May 27th, 2008 at 12:08 pmBlingy-Megaman Says:

We’re down again, but after days of super low loads… I thought we were in the clear!

I guess not.

I’d really like to be able to rely on my website, guys…

500 errors across the board.

DH support responded to my support ticket/request with a “We believe this issue to be resolved.” but everything is still down.

Are we relying on faith now?

Sigh.

After like 2 days with good performance, now this:

12:49:36 up 1:14, 2 users, load average: 519.15, 673.38, 743.59

This is something I have never before seen in my life…

Of course, 500 errors on every page, and even static pages take 3mins to load…

Venus - you can use Google Apps for domain, which would allow you to have your domain name in email address and still use Gmail.

p.s. Our Dreamhost site is just refusing connections for last hour.

Is there any update on mail? Still down for us.

Okay, I’m starting to get impatient.

Granted, I don’t have anything mission-critical hosted right now. I plan to, soon, but not yet.

Still, this is NUTS. I was happy to give DH the benefit of the doubt, since being an IT guy myself I know that often when things go wrong they go REALLY wrong and can make everything look horrible no matter what you do. But it’s been over a week now.

I’d post my uptime but I can’t even log in to get it…

Why is Blingy busted to shit ad nauseum at least once every two weeks?

why is this happening to me? =(

My web and email is slow/down again as well, after a few days of being lightning fast. Maybe it’s like Towers of Hanoi, where our web sites are stacked on top of bigger web sites, which in turn are stacked on even bigger ones, and they have to keep moving us from the good spindle to the broken one, until everyone is eventually on a different server. Or maybe it’s more like icanhascheezburger, and there can be cat versions of all of us, vehemently pawing at a computer mouse that isn’t connected to anything, with the caption “INVISIBLE WEBSITE”.

I don’t understand the explanation at the top of this forum. They are moving sites to some different hardware (good, finally, sigh!!) But they are not able to empty out the old server because they want to make sure everything gets transfered over? I understand that, but thinking like that you will never be able to copy over a site that is running, can you?? I mean files keep changing or get added or whatever…..

When will they make the big step and say…..guys….we shut down the server for 4 hrs…..copy over half of the sites…get them of the old server and take it from there……it is just pathetic to see them struggling trying to keep everything up and running and solving this at the same time….The result is: nothing works for no one and the file transfers take forever.

I’ve only been with NightmareHost for 4 months. Apparently that’s not long enough to remember the “good ol’ days”. Any oldtimers out there that think this company can pull this thing together?

I have to bail. Can anyone tell me where to find a list of stats showing the reliability of their competitors. I need to get off this boat and would rather pay more money if it means more reliability.
Thanks

You have to be kidding me, your doing this work during the day! Are you people friggin amatuers or what? I have a business to run, that business requires friggin EMAIL to WORK! This is the worst service I have ever gotten at a hosting company, even worse than FastWebServer hosting if you can believe that… Losers, you’ve had 4 months to fix this problem and get people off of this mess and you’ve done pretty much nothing. The bottom line is this, IF I CAN”T DO MY BUSINESS I DON”T NEED YOUR SERVICE.

I’m with the guy above, 4 months of this shit is long enough for me too, I’m going to bail and go to a relaible company…

EOR

Does anyone know which hosting service this forum is running on??? It always seems to be up and running just fine. I’d like to be there

does anyone know any really good shared host? no more dreamhost….. my worst experience with dreamhost in these three month….

DH, it really is frustrating.

I perceive that there is not much being done to resolve the issue. The service you provide has had more peaks than a roller coaster in the last 4 months, so the fact that you have come back several times and confirmed the resolution does not make me feel confident you actually will be able to do so.

As a user I do expect to see a lot more feedback from you with the steps you are taking to fix the problem, not the now frequent “blingy is too big, we can’t move things away”. We had the same problem 3 weeks ago and the service was down for sevaral days!. That is enough to take someone out of business.

I think the service and facilities you provide are great but I’m begining to consider fully moving away. I’ve already taken my critical sites off the DH servers … simply could not afford not having them up at random intervals for indefinite time.

In case you are listening.
Alex

I have to say that this couldn’t have come at a worse time. My client is putting up their 100th episode and it’s just not happening. FTP is accessible but the site is down or reeeally slow…

Is there any way for DreamHost to update us on a time frame?

Does anybody know some good replacement hosting??

I have to move 4 accounts/websites away from DH, but they all need alot of file storage capacity

The technical level at DH is just plain sad, hitting the same customers again and again with problems that should have been solved at the very start.

OTRA VEZ, QUEMEN YA ESO, YA ME PUSO COMO LA GRANDE, SOLO CAYENDOSE ESTA EL SERVICIO

Its just my luck….and I thought I was bad off when I decided to host with Site5! HELP!

Gah, I’ve got one of my primary websites down, and it has been down for the last few hours and another site with a billing system regularly going up and down (and so my uptime alert system keeps emailing me :s). SOMEONE, DO SOMETHING!

As a person of **cough** patience, I’ll wait for a few more hours before giving up all hope. Seriously though, if Blingy’s filer isn’t working as it should, is there any option to replace it, or would that be *far* too costly?

My sites (boo webserver) just reappeared… seems to works fine… just have to wait DNS propagation for the main one (was redirected to a safety space…)

And there is again, another big server issue… When I bought this yearly hosting, everything was perfect! My website was flying over the sky! but… 3 months (90 guarantee days) after I bought this yearly hosting my webserver started to presence issues like this one, just like someone from DH said, “my website is more time down than up”.

I don’t know yet what to do, I hope this issues get solved, we’re paying!

For the last hour there is no load on the box, just “Connection refused” on port 80 :(

Website and FTP was down for about an hour, I’m guessing it had to do with Blingy.

Sucks about the rest of the people on this thread, though. I haven’t been having any
problems aside from maybe an hour of downtime a month, which is acceptable for me.

everything seems to be up and running for me now…
uffa!

The part about all the rants in these forums I find most amusing is the number of people that are making comments as if they were sending a message to DH support. The very start of the forums state that these are NOT an avenue of communication for support.
Personally I find it refreshing that DH even lets us rant about their service on a forum that they have provided!
So many commercial sites immediately delete or erase any messages that have negative comments about themselves.

Thank you for being as up front as you have been.

Yes, I am just as frustrated as everyone else. I signed on just as all this crap started happening and managed to land on the ever lucky Blingy cluster. But there has been progress and it is just a matter of time for this to get sorted out.

At least you could apply for a rebate for the major down time and get credited for it.

When this is all done I would like to see what the support is like and the normal downtimes over the next year.

Then I will make my decision.

If I need a 4 nines uptime service for a commercial site then I’d be hosting my own box that I had full access to.
Or at least be paying a heck of a lot more than I am here. :-)

Their uptime is still better than half of HotMail and MSN has been over the last year. :-)

Haha! All my sites have been moved over to another file server. Woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Took a little while though, and I was experiencing loads over 300 before (now around 1.75). I hope that the company that made that file server go bust pretty soon - they deserve it.

@Isaac

The problem relates to the filer hardware that DreamHost used, manufactured by a company called Bluearc. DreamHost traditionally used several Netapps filers on their older clusters, however for the new one they were marketed a ’super filer’ which could do what would take four filers to do for one. Yes, it probably cost a lot more, but lots of data on one filer can streamline the process and thus give better customer performance. The trouble came when this single filer on the Blingy cluster started to fail to cope with the loads that it was under (or that is the impression that I have got), and thus the downtime.

Regrettably, no matter how annoying, these issues are a fact of life and the number of customers that DreamHost has to move means that this process will take a long time. Given that they are trying their best (from the impression that I have been given) and are coping with large support loads as a result of this issue, we just have to be patient until this issue is resolved. If you want REALLY reliable hosting, then it would cost far more and you’d be given far less! Lets just hope that they get everything sorted once and for all!

My sites on ganon server are down and giving http 500 error code :(
How much time is needed to complete the move?

I have using DH for a year and haven’t faced such a problem like this 1! So, I think its an accidental problem and accident is part of life.

Blingy is Fail! Webmail AND site are still slow to load. Are we getting hit with some sort of DoS attacks from the web or something. It always seems to be Blingy that has these major issues that last longer than a week at a time. Someone not playing nice on their account/blingy server?

DigiP, have you actually read what they’ve been telling us??? Theo R’s answer seems… sensible, and plausible, if not great news for us Blingy sufferers.

my sites are veryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy slowly !!!!
DH is veryyyyyyyyyyyy bad !!

I need One year free!!

@Daniel - if you had read the blog entry about the issue, it’s all in there. And they even linked to it from this page, so don’t complain if you missed it… oh and the March 2008 newsletter linked to the blog entry as well. Sometimes it’s beneficial to skim even newlsetters, you know.

DH IS pretty good at keeping us informed on this page and it IS noteworthy that the comments here don’t seem to be censored.

Still - it’s unprofessional to only start moving people to other servers after 3+ months (not hours or days, MONTHS) of non-service. Professional would’ve been to do so immediately when the problem first pops up instead of unsuccessfully trying to fix the issues on the LIVE server. Paying customers are not guinea pigs.

Btw. my loads are back to 2-20 (from the 500-700 I pasted here yesterday) and the 500 errors are gone for now - as expected from such “low” loads. I’m still on wycliffe, though, so I guess it’s not yet over for me :-(

Not that it matters much, but NELSON is feeling the pain also. For that past few days.

After trying to be patient for 3 months I finally left DH a few days back. Since I am now happy with my new host, I was wondering whether all Blingy customers shared a similar fate. That the blingy problem must have got resolved by now. But I am really sorry to see that you guys are still unlucky.

god!!!
How usually thus??
Please quick Repair~~

OMG!

More than two fucking weeks with my site down! DH sucks. I will change hosting when the contract ends.

My question, are we actually getting moved off wycliffe? I assumed wycliffe was not the name of the file server in question. I’m also still on wycliffe, but things are running very well.

Switched over to http://www.prq.se and never been happier, awesome company.

Why don’t you shut down any server service (ftp, ssh, apache, and so on) and then move all the data?
This is taking very long time and it’s creating more problems that a complete shut down….

No MySQL working :(

We are on haven but we are also affected. This really is a major problem and it seems to be spreading.

@Dan:
Good point. Since I’ve never actually played with NFS clusters, I have no idea how exactly this works. Thinking about it, shouldn’t it get better not before ALL users from your (web) server are moved, so your server won’t have to access the problematic file server anymore?

My loads are still good, site is working better than ever. I HOPE that this thing is finally over now, at least for me…

Uhm guys… I’m coming upon the 72 hour marker from where my mail started to become undeliverable. What’s going on here? Should I just migrate to GMail like DH says I should and just get rid of DH mail services?

Did they get this file server used off ebay or something?
Everyone that got this problem should get a year free!

its not hard that much to make things work fine. :(

i can’t seem to send email. i’m trying to send two. one just bounces back to me and the other gives me “User unknown in virtual alias table” when i try to send.

My importanat website binayaksen.net is down now for last 4 Hours. I filed a support request before 1 hour no yresponse yet.

Anivar

my site is down

Hey, I was one of the lucky ones. My files were moved off the server. Or was I? On Tuesday 5-27, I discovered all 380 gigs of one of my user’s files were gone. Over 1000 files, empty. I watched over the next couple of days the files slowly reappear. Then the reloads stopped! I’m still without 20% of my files. Oh and the friendly support guy tells me the move was suppose to be transparent and completed. That’s reassuring. I can only hope they haven’t been deleted permanently. I thought it’d been bad since I signed on in February, but this takes the cake.

I have been having problems for 36 hours now. I am finally in the process of migration. I pray it comes quickly.

oh noes, i’ve got no site, no mail, no ssh, and no web panel. I hope this means I’m being taken down temporarily to get moved!

I can’t get to *any* of my pages, nor can I get to the web panel this morning. This has been going on for awhile. I sincerely hope you guys can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

i think this might be a good time for an update… I’d contact support but my panel is gone. I kinda need to get my email…

@chuck - exactly. i’d open a support ticket… IF I COULD GET TO THE PANEL! >:(

I’ve also recently switched to a new host and couldn’t be happier. I see i haven’t been missing much.

What the hell, my SQL servers are not responding and my site is unreachable. It’s been almost two weeks and you STILL haven’t fixed this?

@Nina
> It’s been almost two weeks and you STILL haven’t fixed this?

Nope it has been since end of February!
They can’t/don’t know how move data to another filers.

They un-fair un-happy deleted some threads here about blingy. There was 3 weeks of NO SERVICE at the March/April.

Former Very-Happy-Customer

Lol, wow, after posting disparaging comments when this issue started I was blocked from posting for months. This blingy problem has been going on for 3 months. It started shortly after I joined in Feb. They changed the dates on the status page so that it appeared later. The old thread had over 1500 posts (see link). I left in March/April after having enough. I joined canadian web hosting and it’s been really good. Dreamhost really sucks. They admitted that after initially having problems with blingy they continued to add users. Morons. I also asked to be switched to a new cluster and they let me cancel (I got a full refund of course) rather than move me. So if you’re a new customer get out while you can. Once you go post the 97 day period you will be stuck with paying for a headache.

Obviously this issue has been poorly managed and since it has been just one filer on one cluster they seem to have a ‘whatever’ it’s just a few customers attitude. Anyway, there are good hosts out there, Move while you can.

http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/2008/03/27/filer-problems-with-blingy-cluster/

http://www.dreamhoststatus.com/index.php?s=blingy

What is really ridiculous is that, according to the info from the posts on this page, they have continued to add new customers to this cluster. What the fu.ck?

vidar and swarthy seem to be having issues….

I have the solution! Everyone ditch dreamhost for another webhost (there are plenty out there), and then they won’t have to worry about moving people off of blingy anymore (because there won’t be anyone left!) Problem solved for DH and for unhappy customers!

I just signed up and these comments are freaking me out. What’s also freaking me out is that I can’t log in! It says my email is not in the database, yet I signed up over a week ago! These guys were #1 on wordpress.org. Wordpress is going to hear from me about this crap. Plus, now I need to use the Paypal resolution center to get my money back. The only support I found was the one in the admin panel which I can’t log into, dammit. No phone number for help. What a joke….. :(

where the hell is ROFLCOPTER???%)

we have no access to the control panel and get an error message
Temporarily Unavailable
The web panel is temporarily unavailable while we perform maintenance on our database.

[Sources: dreamhost]

when will it be avaialable and is that means all the websites are effected?

Temporarily Unavailable

I cant get into my emails and my customers are really upset….:(

A freakin’ week without an update on a HIGH priority ticket?! WTF is wrong with these people?

Wow that 99% uptime sure rocks. I would move hosts if i could backup my database.

Oh Man! I´ve just singed up for a Yearly plan, and now my databases is offline! My server is sarabi:agent. I need my database back! I have open 3 tickets in the support. Please put my databases online again! Even in another server! Just restore a backup from 2008-06-03 and it´s ok.

this is kind of pathetic that it’s still not fixed.

kind of pathetic, still not fixed!

email is down

umm, now one of my htaccess password protected folders is no longer listed in my panel. one of my domains still has it’s listed, but not the other. wtf?

My Sarabi database is empty as well… Lucky for me I still here less than 97 days, so at least I will get my money back (at least I hope so. I no longer believe anything they say…)

Chances are that it isn’t a “blank” database, but that the database can’t be accessed at this time due to being bogged-down with I/O operations. I’ve got a number of people with SQL-using sites that are affected by this, and HTTP still works fine.

Once they move your stuff, you should be able to get your database-using Web apps online again.

I’m looking at InMotion hosting now…anyone have any experience with that. Also, any good reliable host ranking sites out there?

Can we get an update for this?

this is like paying money to get kicked repeatedly in the nuts. give me more!

I enjoy the attitudes of the DH team but if you need constant reliability in your host, then DH is not for you.

I have used many different hosts and it’s really hard to say who’s good and who’s bad at times. I am currently running a dedicated server on http://www.theplanet.com and so far so good. My favorite part about it is I can actually CALL or LIVE CHAT with a technician anytime I want - 24/7. That to me is worth paying $100/ month. At DH I was on the private server which was costing about $70/mnth and you know the problems we’ve been having so I don’t need to make anymore comparisons.

If DH had real tech support - they would gain a lot more loyal customers and would stop losing so many customers every time their equipment fails.

I just cannot believe this!!!!! I left DH about three weeks ago after the third time blingy went nuts. Cant believe people are still stuck in the same jam. I moved to hostgator and my traffic is up and everything is great. Change is great.

I wish people from other companies would quit spamming this list. That’s so low. When I see such comments, I make a point to remember which host is being referred, because I would NEVER sign up with a host that employs such sleazy ass tactics.

Dreamhost is great. My sites are up and running just fine. But if I ever do want to change hosts, I will definitely NOT choose Hostgator (what a stupid fucking name) or anything with ‘planet’ in it.

I encourage all consumers to Google ‘hostgator sucks’ and see what you come up with…

“Dreamhost is great. My sites are up and running just fine. ”

Good for you, your sites are fine therefore everybody else is fine. Dick.

My recent history with dreamhost. I have a start-up that I put my entire savings into:

5 weeks ago: Dreamhost lost 1/2 of my files (totaling 150 gigs). They did not even have one backup over the last 5 months so I had to take 2 weeks of my site being down to re-upload my files. Then they did something (they have not told me what they did) and my site and FTP server was completely down with absolutely no access. They said “I fixed your site.” Prophetic, huh? However, they only “fixed” half of my site. In the process of “fixing” they lost my secure pages… I think they have not responded to me… and my customers cannot access any secure pages. AKA, no shopping, no business. They promised me compensation a few weeks back and I honestly think they are screwing with my site so that I leave so that they don’t have to compensate me.

I HAVE BEEN DOWN (EITHER NO FILES OR COMPLETELY DOWN) FOR 17 OF 35 DAYS!!! I have had a ticket open for 15 days without closure. The ticket that I submitted regarding SSL has been open for 28 hours!! What is the value of Dreamhost??

Give me a break already!!

lol, 5 months on one problem filer. Great issue management dreamhost,

I moved to canadianwebhosting.com and it has been absolutely excellent.

oh.. when i login to ftp there are no my site folders.. But i see this
/tmp/
/etc/

Here is the CEO’s personal blog: http://www.idallas.com/blxx/
Let him know how ridiculous this whole thing is.

always slow here—

For all that are in a rut with your email etc I suggest getting your account email with godaddy.com and not using your email with dreamhost. I’ve had my site down twice in the last two weeks and thank the Lord I had my email set up with godaddy, so I still at least can get client emails. I started using dreamhost as it was referred to me, but I’m very unhappy with the hosting and downtimes. Sorry dreamhost I’ve had enough!

Does anyone know the credibility of the CEO’s blog actually being http://www.idallas.com/blxx/ ??? If this is really the CEO’s blog and it’s copyrighted by FU**, YEAH! ENTERTAINMENT (I put in the sensors on purpose but the site doesn’t have the sensors)

For a company that comes across as so nice and such a fun group of folks I don’t see how the CEO can dare put up something so filthy!

Blingy again… 1st server internal error, now there’s no response… until when? what about the moves?

Had to check back…but it looks like nothing has changed. I moved over to InMotion a while back and it’s been awesome. I must say though that DH was really good about giving me a refund. Sometimes things just don’t go as planned….sometimes they just get all ‘blingy’…if you know what I mean.

all the week lossing positions on google, lossing visits, lossing cash…

Hey guys

can any one explain what is Blingy ???

You can always do what I do when DreamHost is having these kind of difficulties. ssh into your server and run mutt as your mail client from the server side. It’s fast, reliable, and already setup for you.

Kip

I’m on gotti and my website is deader than tutankamen

you know the only real solution at this point to the constant down server time is find a new host

this is suck!, its been 2 days, and my sites still running like a snail.. to much non responsive time out….

any idea how much long would it takes? this is my first time to hear about blingy..?

I pay almost double now what I used to pay when I was with DH, and I am more than happy doing so because the host I now use is almost never down, and what’s more is that they have a 99.9% uptime guarantee that applies each and every month if they did happen to fall over. For the record, the last 6 months or so have had perfect uptime using a quarter-hourly monitoring service, other than a 25 minute scheduled downtime for a server upgrade last month.

For me it’s not about getting a refund though for repeated downtimes, as DH have done once or twice in the past (but not consistently), it’s about getting it right in the first place so there ARE no downtimes - I’m paying for a hosting service, not for a refund of service because the host is fucking useless. If I wanted that, I’d just avoid the hassle and not bother getting hosting in the first place!

It’s a shame DH can’t seem to keep it up more than a few days without yet another fuck-up happening. Perhaps sprinkle some viagra on your servers? How many years do you morons have to keep these service interruptions going before you realize that this server is fundamentally screwed. Same goes with your gad-awful database server(s), jaysus, what a fucking nightmare. So glad to be elsewhere now.

DO SOMETHING!! PLEASE!

down again…

Blingy problems… unresolved for OVER 2 MONTHS NOW?
my sites are down, btw. not for the first time…
i’m very happy that i didn’t decide to host my clients at Dreamhost. Shitty enough for my own sites, but i would NEVER recommend this bullshit to a client.

Really considering moving to another host… This stuff just happens all too often.

I’ve stuck with Dreamhost for this long, through various similar issues, and even defended them, but I’m really starting to lose hope here.

If someone repeatedly smacked you in the head with a hammer, would you continue to stand there and take it (providing you were still conscious that is)? Because that’s what you’re doing staying with DH.

(originally written by Jim somehow somwhere, but fully applies to me)

I loved and used DH for years. They have excellent webpanel and *had* excellent support. Fast download speeds, just awesome for $15 to $30 depends on year and plan I subscribed. For me unlimited and fast databases, transfer, SSH etc. !!! I recommended and bring over 10 customers (no provisions, just recommandations to friends) to DH.

What I have learned from 2007/11 is a very simply - DH is not a place to host serious business sites of any kind. Fun little sites that real businesses do not depend upon sure, anything that someone expects to be up most of the time no way.

I work with other hosting companies and yes downtime is a reality. But with the others (similar or lower pricing compared (for same transfer/capacity/SSH/DBs …) to DH so let’s take that silly argument of the equation) being down for an hour or two at a time is considered severe. They don’t apologize for it, they fix it and get us back up and running and then explain what happened after the fact. Or sometime they make a dead bug, no apologize, no explanation, nothing bad happened, no money return, but !! fixed service within few hours!!! (Not fair, but better than NO SERVICE FOR 7 MONTHS !!! and many extra large smile pics huge super fun blog mail apologisies from owner of the company)

I just don’t see any reasonable argument for 2 weeks of downtime. I’ve been in the IT game for over 12 years and I just really can’t come up with a technology scenario that would require this much downtime to fix a problem. Something other than technology (use your imagination I don’t want to be accused of starting rumors) becoming a very likely possibility in my opinion.

The the DH (if you read this) please just keep using your best efforts to get us back up and running….PLEASE we are begging you.

Google just announced Google App Engine, and certainly (driven by Robert Scoble) that has been running like wildfire around the blogosphere. It solves some very interesting problems, and does it in a slick way, but it also creates some questions….
