Filtered Mail Delays

Posted (May 21st, 2008 at 5:58 pm PST) by Jason C

Customers with the Junk Filter enabled for their domains have been reporting delays due to an issue with our filtering machines. The team here has actually ferreted out the problem already and the number of queued messages is dropping as they process thru the filters. There will still be some delays with messages while the mail gets back under control — but please know that we’re doing our best to sort this matter out as quickly as possible.

Once things level back out, we’ll update this ticket with an “all clear”. Sorry for any issues this might have caused!

Update Fri May 23 11:48:44 PDT 2008 : We are continuing to monitor this situation and things are improving. Some delays are still happening but not as frequently or as severely. We know why the delays are occurring but not the exact root cause. We are now in the process of upgrading all of the core software in use on our mail filtering servers to the latest versions.

Update Fri May 23 17:04:07 PDT 2008 : The queues have leveled out to a manageable size and are processing mail normally and quickly.  If delays persist at all, please let us know by writing into support and we’ll gladly take care of you as best we can.

Any chance you guys could get a bit more proactive on this one? If the queue’s too deep or the size of the folder holding the data gets larger than 100G, maybe it’s time to take a look at it rather than wait for customers to complain?

Well, that explains that.

Noticed that emails sent to me between 12PM and 4PM MST have started to arrive in my Inbox. It’s like watching events unfold that have already happened.

Hopefully everything goes through alright, but this combined with the Blingy issues is certainly getting annoying.

Yeah I’m getting emails right now from 8 hours ago….I hope it speeds up soon.

Please fix this soon–this is costing me money (and I’m sure I’m not alone in this).

Thanks

I’d like to have a PS mail server…..

Severity “Low”? I guess thousands (?) of customers getting their emails 4 to 8 hours late is not an important issue? Seriously, guys… When I have clients and family calling me wondering why I haven’t responded to mails, I’d say that is important. For me. And, incidentally, turning my Junk Mail Filter off is not a realistic possibility either. Let’s get this fixed, please.

This is just another prove that email server is the most difficult one to manager now.

um, how about severity, “High”?? Man this sucks.

i’ve shut off the junk mail filter… it’s more important that we receive our legit email instead of avoid spam.

We still have a junk filter built into Apple Mail, so it’s not a huge problem. Let us know when its good to turn it back on!

Does this have anything to do with all my sites being wiped clean? And all the FTP folders missing?!!!

Now this is costing me BIG TIME.

upset,,,nightmare in dreamhost

“please know that we’re doing our best to sort this matter out as quickly as possible”

Umm…no. I first reported this problem 3 days ago, and your support staff sat on it for well over 24 hours, and it’s just now making it to the status page.

This is not what qualifies as “quickly” under any stretch of the imagination.

Okay - I’m sensing there is server problems going - would this be the cause of my
’socket error 10061′ all day?

Email completely non-existent all day!

I know you’re working on this….

Thanks

Turning off the junk mail filter doesn’t seem to be working for me either. UGH!! I need emails to work.

Please fix it soon. PLEASE!!!

This continues to be a problem. Any idea when it will be resolved?

I’m still seeing 2+ hour delays. What’s going on? How is this “Severity: Low”? It’s now messed up meetings and business for 2 days for me.

carolyn:

turning on or off email just changes your domain’s MX record to point to a differnt recieving email server

If you’re using an alternative (non-dreamhost) DNS server… you will have to manually change the MX record to point to the unfiltered server.

It looked like email was slowly but surely coming in today (after about 2 days of delays) but in the past 4 hours it’s gone back down again whereby employees aren’t receiving emails and we’re missing a ton still.

Thanks for working on this.

After about 2 days of long delays (bumping up and down within a 2-6 hour range), my guess is the Severity of this issue should climb a little.

I *do* know solving mail server problems (especially mail filtering with spamassassin performance in between) is no journey in the park, and that draining tens (or hundreds) of thousands messages doesn’t happen in half an hour, but… if whatever caused the messed was not solved after 2 days, this is a severe problem… and if it is already ‘kinda’ solved, but the queues can not be drained, maybe turning the filters off for a while (4-6 hours) allow for the draining of the queues and then, when you are back in normal queue sizes (whatever that is for dreamhost), you can re-enable the filtering.

I guess most of us will be happier with a few hundred non-filtered spam messages and standard delay than the usual filtering and 4 hour (or longer) delays…

Just my 2c.

We are struggling here having just completed an event to find that emails sent to various organisations whom we have been coordinating budgets and services with, since the 21st, have only received emails TODAY! That’s the 23rd… in Australia that is! This is going to be a nightmare to deal with as some providers are stating that since our emails arrived AFTER the event, they do not have to deal with the issues raised!

I’m sorry Dreamhost, but email delays are a HIGH priority issue, particularly as pretty much everyone most of us I suspect deals with, expects rapid turn arounds.

Andrew

This is still going on. This sucks!

Our mail has been intermittently delayed since MONDAY. That’s five days, in case Dreamhost can’t count. I can’t afford these server problems any more–just happens too frequently. Am switching to a new host, today. Ironically, the e-mail from my new vendor outlining my new login info is also delayed!! Sigh…

Email is a *critical* application for most folks these days. If dreamhost does not think so then it’s time for us reconsider our hosting options. This has been going for few days now. I am really disappointed by Dreamhost’s attitude towards this issue.

I showed up to a meeting yesterday morning, only to find out that it had been canceled the day before. It was an hour drive to and from the meeting (that never happened).

I still haven’t received the email that says the meeting was canceled. Apparently, it was sent Wednesday afternoon.

We need to remove a former employees e-mail address from our system as well as adding 2 new employees. Please provide instructions on how to perform this matter.

Thank you!

Our company uses DreamHost for our e-mail; how do we delete a former employee and create e-mail addresses for 2 new employees. Please advise.

^ Lisa: Use the control panel. http://panel.dreamhost.com

@everyone else: If it’s more important to receive legit email rather then avoid spam then TURN OFF YOUR SPAM FILTER.

(And by the way…. if your email is so mission critical, then paying $2 a week a shared host is a BAD BAD BAD idea… Either pony up the big bucks for a dedicated service or run your own email server.)
