Major network problems (Resolved)

Posted (June 3rd, 2008 at 2:03 pm PST) by danwy

We’re currently experiencing some major networking problems. Details are sparse at the moment, but our admin team is currently investigating it and we will be updating this post as soon as we have any additional information. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this causes you.

Resolved 2:15PM Pacific: It seems that bringing online a new switch messed up our VLAN definitions on the core router. This meant routing was knocked offline until the VLANs were restored. We have rectified this, and setup the appropriate precautions so that a non-core switches and routers cannot update our vlan tables.

thats it, Im done.
Keep my fucking money.

Well that explains it.

Well, lets hope it gets fixed quick

Man, you guys are fast. I was alerted my site was down 5 minutes ago and this post just comes up.

awesome.
everything is down,

i’ve never really had issues before, everyone i know is like “dude dreamhost is always down” and i’ve always defended.

now i have a meeting in 10 minutes with a client and need to show them something hosted on the server, and its all gone to hell

ha ha ha ha what a major F-ing pain

oh… so that’s the reason why all my sites are down… well.. i guess i should just keep losing money :)

all sites down in my account!!!!!!!

in snapple.dreamhost.com

i hate this……

getting sick of reliability issues. Guess im going to have to look for another host.

Sorry to stop your whining session guys, but it works again…

Dreamhost came highly recommended to me and the facilities available (when they are available) are great. However, this is yet another in a long line of problems: it’s a lot of hassle to move hosts, and any refund comes as a Dreamhost credit that can only be used against Dreamhost. I was in the middle of doing updates to two web sites and lost my ssh connections. I was about to start some subversion stuff and a big rsync - I’m glad I waited… Please Dreamhost, get your act together - this is very frustrating!

Well, kudos to them! I’m back up-all is well-thanks guys!

True enough my mail myslq and http its working now, wow that was fast xD thums up ^^ (probably will go dow again xD)

THIS IS RIDICULOUS…

yeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

I was amused that the downtime almost perfectly coincided to me testing out the webmail; I thought I had done something wrong >_<

Other than that I don’t think anyone noticed there was any downtime at all. I’m only hosting 7 domains though so my traffic is pretty spartan

Keep up the good work folks!

My sites are working, now.

Current Time Is 14:12:03 PDT.

Keep cool guys.

My sites (40) are down too. But where is the problem? Contact the support and they’ll do their best. No hosting company is free of error and outtakes. Try some german hosters and you’ll know what pain really is.

Smile, have a cup of coffee and let the guys do their job.

Greetings Sarco.

P.S.: No, I’m not working for DreamHost or getting paid for this entry.

Half of my stuff works / half doesn’t

Thanks for keeping us in the loop about the status.

This is really getting old…

I’m back up (frisky cluster).

hi,
everything down on my sites…. on nestea.dreamhost.com

hope it’s going to be solve very very quick !

nothing new ?

one of my sites has been down for 2 days, i have submitted support tickets and not even gotten a response. nice customer service eh.
i wish i could say this was the first time, but as many of you now, it is not.

DREAMHOST is NOT quality hosting, tell any and everyone you can. save them the hassle, of this.

yeh thanks for the announcement telling us things we already know.
yeah service is down, again, but how about instead of bandaiding it every fricking time you get pro-active and avoid these matters, maybe you guys grew to fast? I am not sure, but this is ridiculous.

thaksing thse guys for announcing down time is like thanking a mugger when he says “hand me your wallet, please”"oh did you hear that, the nice man with the ski mask said please, how sweet.”

anyway.

can you believe they run this admin panel on wordpress, interesting

Looks like my sites are back up and running, way to be on the ball Dreamhost ;)

back up.. thank you!

My sites are back up too.

hahahaha! You’re supposed to set the switch up in client mode not the vtp domain controller. ;-)

My sites were down 30 minutes (that I noticed) tops…And this is the first time in over a year since I started hosting with DH. I’ve always seen the rants about what poor service there is, but I’ve had nothing but good experiences, even counting this small hiccup.

(no, I’m not an employee or being paid)

All my webs are back but no files are found! Its like all my files have been erased. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

So my site finally came back up and now it’s down again whee

I’ve been waiting 12 hours for a response to a ticket posted when I discovered all my files on Rygar had disappeared. Anyone else have files gone missing?

haha wow, twice or three times a year now. way to go dreamhost!

clients that dont do this:

1and1.com
dotster.com

i use both for my clients “because theyre cheap” but now im realizing i need to switch over. dreamhost boasts no bigger advantage other than the one-click installs.

ive been threatening to leave for a few years now, member since 1999 or 1998. again, dreamhost has gone down the toilet.

n00bs who keep saying “this happens to all providers”: nope, it doesnt. and it didnt happen to dreamhost in the “old days”.

June 3rd, 2008 at 3:15 pmNot surprised Says:

I’m really tired of this. I even upgraded to a Private Server for my web server and another for my SQL, and they not only suffer from the crippling lack of bandwidth the shared servers seem to exhibit, but are actually down MORE OFTEN than shared hosting. When they’re not locking up, requiring me to log in and fix the problem myself, they’re completely down due to some script one of your “admins” has run or because you can’t seem to keep your network operational. I’ve offered to pay you five times as much if you can just keep my websites online, but you’ve done nothing but fail, and colossally so. An hour after you “resolved” this problem, my sites are STILL down.

I’m glad you guys are smart, don’t mind the haters.

June 3rd, 2008 at 3:26 pmsurprise surprise Says:

hey kyle, some of us have real things we do with our sites, not just shitty rap blogs.

good luck interning at The Fader lil homie!

This is rediculous. All [possibly] service affecting or core network changes should be made after hours in a maintenance window. Poor excuse for sloppy work.

“haha wow, twice or three times a year now. way to go dreamhost!

clients that dont do this:

1and1.com
dotster.com”

And neither of them offer shell access. Keep looking.

And they don’t burn down their hosting facilities either:

theplanet.com in case you want to sign up.

you guys (and gals) think that’s bad…

i need to action an EMERGENCY file edit THIS SECOND and the https://panel.dreamhost.com/login/newip.cgi is down so i can’t even log in to my a/c!

i was going to switch to site5.com (check out their ‘puuurfect 10′ over at dnsreport.com) last year due to some ‘issues’ with tec support, but like another poster stated, changing hosts AIN’T EASY

…but, overall i feel that DH does a good job (however, it’s always a worry having all your eggs in 1 basket!)

oh, and finally, when people say others are better, can they please post who exactly?

many thanks

roberto

…also, another reason i like DH is their ping times are low for me (i’m in nz)

i consistantly get 141ms (over a period of 6 months)

i just tried the planet and got:

obviously, a low ping time is really *really* important to me and my customers visitors experience

UPDATE: i just got a “Authorize your IP address!” email so gotta get on IT…

ciao for now

: )

Most VTP deployments have similar horror stories. Stop using VTP in your network. Use your NMS to push VLANs into your switches/routers.

Sites are still down. Why is this labeled resolved?

oooops, vtp discontrol

Like I staed ALL MY FILES ON MY 50 Websites are missing! Im ready to sue Dreamhost!!

June 3rd, 2008 at 11:54 pmhelp me is a dumbass Says:

@ “Im ready to sue Dreamhost!!”

The allowance your mommy gives you wouldn’t cover an attorney’s fees.

Hey my SQL database is not response FIX IT :(

Haha “vtp mode transparent” FTW!

What is resolved? My website is still down.

My Some 40 plus websites are in limbo. Customers are calling
me …. My hypnotists who are spending money on google adwords
are suicidal. Just another wonderful Wednesday morning in New York
city.

Damn ….. Why can’t these things be as consistant as my phone company
is able to bill me :)

I love Dreamhost …. and this can happen with anyone, but when your
livlihood depends on these websites … it purely sucks.

All my websites are down. I cant connect via http://FTP. I can access via WebFTP but all my domain folders and files are missing. Dreamhost wont even reply to my tickets.

Im losing alot of money, please dont do this to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now it lloks like I cant even reply to this topic because I get a Java error.

What servers are you guys on? We had all our files go missing yesterday and have been told to change our passwords suggesting we’ve allowed our details to be compromised but I am wondering if DH has been compromised?

I’m amazed at all this ridiculous vitriol. One of the reasons it seems like Dreamhost goes down more than others is because they maintain this blog which -tells- you whenever they are having issues. How many webhosts do that? Near immediate explanations and status updates? I appreciate the transparency, and so should you.

Thanks for the hard work, DH. Keep it up.

I suggest ICND1 and ICND2 as required reading for all of your Network guys…just a thought:)

Still down. Bad timing for me. Hoping for a quick resolution….

Hey guys, be serious please.
My DH sites are NOT responding and they are down… they’re on Homer server.
Yesterday they were just slow, but now they’re down. My blog, my wiki. The only running is my personal page hosted on FREE webspace oversea… very well “resolved” issue.

My IMMEDIATE next step is to shop around for a new host and as soon as I will be able to access my CPanels, goodbye DH.

Sincerely,
Ric

MySQL is down. Has been off and on since yesterday. Frustrating.

You all realize that NO MATTER WHERE you host your site, there is going to be downtime (and usually a lot of it and at inopportune moments). I’m so sick of the whining that users of DH put on the rest of us. If you can’t handle the nature of the industry, you shouldn’t be online in the first place.
