A Controller Was On The Fritz

Posted (June 25th, 2008 at 6:43 am PST) by patrickm

We found that one of our controllers has been pushing out bad Apache configurations and we’ve removed it from the rotation until we can get the issue resolved.

If you notice that your domain is not resolving correctly and pointing to a completely different domain, please contact support and we’ll fix that right up for you.

We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused!

Clarification… was the controller compromised by hackers/spammers and will an investigation be carried out to determine whether this was the case? If possible, could be a nice little spammer trick to use well regarded/ranked domains for a few hours of spam but then get the domain labeled as a spammer, thus destroying it’s search ranking and users getting alerts visiting it.

@Alex: no, it was definitely not compromised in any way, shape, or form.

At the current time we believe it simply to be a misconfiguration in the sysctl files-max setting, however we have not yet confirmed this.

The reason other sites were showing up instead of the normal bad_httpd_conf message is because the first virtualhost configured is what gets shown to users when apache doesn’t know which one specifically to show. In this case, the controller thought the documentroot for the first virtualhost (missing.dreamhost.org, specifically) didn’t exist, and skipped it.

Hello,

Is this the reason why a box pops up asking me for my password and user name? This only happen on outlook buth both fields have information so all I do is hit save but it pops up right back. I can keep trying this all fay and it keeps doing it. How can I get this fixed?

Thanks
Adan

I am having the same issue as Adan.

Matt

I don’t think this is the cause of my current problem, but my site is down now and there’s no other recent outages listed here. Anyone else having a problem at this time?
