Randy Cluster Outage

Posted (June 30th, 2008 at 9:07 pm PST) by Jason C

Customers on the randy cluster might notice that they are not seeing their sites currently.  We had a bit of a network hiccup and our admin team is working on cleaning everything up.  Once things are resolved, we will post more information here.

The servers affected by this issue are: alexander arkanoid attila baht bam bob bomberman breakout caesar centipede contra cornelius cortes crack cruisin cssmania deblume defender digdug dinar dinero dollar donkeykong ellipsis euro fidget forint franc gage galaga gap go grant guilder happy herod ikari ike io ivan jezebel joust karnov katamari khan klax korben kroner leeloo lei limbo-randy limbo-randy2 limbo-randy3 lira lucky mark marvin morgan napoleon nexus nimitz orbital pacman paperboy patton peso pizarro pound qbert quid rhod ruble rupee rygar scagnetti schilling scipio shekel slaughter slimy tetris ugh ultima venice vex vito wasabi yen yoda zorg

Update - June 30, 2008, 10:10 PM PST: So our admin team was testing a new network configuration on the randy cluster to improve stability and performance. Unfortunately, the servers did not seem to agree with it at all.  After repairing the network config on all the servers across the cluster, the admin on duty has assured me that things should be back online now.  If you continue to see problems with your server or sites, please contact our technical support department and we’ll gladly work with you on resolving any leftover issues you might be seeing.

Does this include korben?

galaga is down as well, so I’m guessing we’re part of the “randy cluster” too

gage is part of randy cluster ? cause gage is down too

Looks like Korben is in the Randy Cluster. I used the search box at the top of the page to find an old post that listed the machines.

Because DH assumes that everyone knows what cluster the belong to, I’m including text from a previous post that lists all the servers that are part of randy:

attila baht bob centipede contra cornelius cortes deblume defender digdug dinero ellipsis gage galaga go guilder herod ikari io klax knocker korben kroner lira mark morgan napoleon nimitz ninja orbital patton peso pizarro quid rupee rygar scagnetti shekel slimy tetris ugh venice vex vito wasabi yen yoda alexander bam boppity breakout caesar crack cruisin dollar euro forint franc grant happy ike ivan janice jezebel leeloo lei limbo-randy3 lucky paperboy pound qbert schilling scipio zorg

Yes, Galaga is part of Randy. For those of you unsure, go to your panel (panel.dreamhost.com) and click on “account status” in the upper right. Your file and email servers will be listed there.

Thanks for including the full list of servers now.

Just when everything had been going so well for so long…

I am annoyed by the phrase “We had a bit of a network hiccup.” Wouldn’t a cluster down be more the equivalent to cardiac arrest in the eyes of someone who has a website down? I would even settle for choking or fainting. In addition, why is severity Medium when sites are down? Shouldn’t that be classified as a High regardless as to the root of the problem? Alas, the price is right…

All my sites just went down about 15 mins ago… I would think it would classified as High too… but.. And yep.. I turned in a report ticket.

“everything had been going so well for so long…” — eh, not for us. Tetris went down yesterday, and our site and shopping cart were down for something like 6 hours. The bad thing was they _thought_ they had it back up within an hour and did their “were done, it’s all good, but if it isn’t, it’s up to you to tell us” act. Very luckily for us I noticed the problem within three or four hours and sent a support request. Otherwise, we might still have been down until this problem.

So about 1 hour of downtime.

I’d like to see an explanation of the mistake that was made, will help me to decide if I will renew this fall. TESTING IS NEVER DONE ON LIVE SERVERS, THAT IS RULE #1.
