FrontPage Extensions will no longer be supported in the next few months.
Posted (July 29th, 2008 at 3:30 pm PST) by BrianIt’s been a long, tumultuous relationship; we’ve laughed, we’ve cried, we’ve had many ups and downs, however, it’s time to part ways with Microsoft’s FrontPage web editor.
In the next few months, we’ll be moving over to a new version of Debian Linux, and this means we have to leave some software behind. We’ve done our best to support Frontpage as long as possible, even long after Microsoft has left it behind:

“What happened to FrontPage?
After nine years of being an award-winning Web authoring tool, FrontPage will be discontinued in late 2006. We will continue to serve the diverse needs of our existing FrontPage customers with the introduction of two brand-new application building and Web authoring tools using the latest technologies: Office SharePoint Designer 2007 for the enterprise information workers and Expression Web for the professional Web designer.”
We know this will cause some problems for users, and we do apologize for the hassle this may cause. We can say that FrontPage will still continue to work as a standalone FTP program, and you can still use it to design pages, we’re specifically talking about the “extensions” that FrontPage uses.
Again, we’re sorry for any trouble this causes, and hope the transition is smooth for everyone involved.

Will MS Expression Web be supported?
good riddance!
Sniff. I used to use them all the way back in 1998. Never look back
Thank GOD. I quit a job once because of FrontPage!
FrontPage is a thing of the late 90s. I used it for like 6-months. And then I commited Frontpage-suicide, thankfully. Now, I use Notepad++ and Dreamwaver (not the WYSIWYG, just the coding) when I’m running GUI and Nano for SSH…
What does everyone else use to edit code? (And design)
You’ve laughed? There were ups? Come on!
@Logan, I’m a Java developer, not a Web designer, but I hand-cobble HTML and some PHP to make functional sites. I use jEdit for all my code editing needs. I used to use Emacs for in-shell editing, but now I exclusively use VI.
@Logan - UltraEdit. No code generators for me, although I do use a lot of PHP and some Perl.
@ Logan
Chami html kit -awesome
@Logan - AEdiX (free syntax highlighter)
TextPad for coding everything (HTML, php, CSS and minor js) & Photoshop for graphics. That’s it.
TextWrangler (BBedit’s free version)
Booohoooo
That’s like saying “we’re not serving sh*t on the menu anymore”.
@Logan, Araelium Edit and TextMate. I’ve tried Coda, but so far, it hasn’t really worked for my workflow. I’d like to give it another go, though, because it looks cool!
People still used FrontPage?
I use Eclipse… give it a go, especially if you use PHP, code hinting is your friend.
Good riddance… I don’t think DreamHost should support old software if it prevents using newer distributions. I hope the new Debian is the newest version.
I’m a pretty normal Linux web developer: vim is my editor, although I used Eclipse in the past with some success.
I still use Eclipse’s ability to properly reformat ugly HTML and XML from time to time. Eclipse is a real pain to get installed and configured the way you like it though.
Shoot ‘em down already!
glad to see them go
(killing rails wouldn’t hurt too, hehehehehe j/k)
Never knew you supported frontpage. Thought that was an artifact from 1999… which was scoffed at in 1999.
@Logan - TextWrangler or BBEdit, depending on which machine is in front of me. Otherwise I have a basic file editor in my CMS that’s just a textarea field that opens/writes files (no syntax coloring, so not my first choice for prodding, just for poking and custom PHP function edits).
i would like to see some statistics on how many people still actually use this feature, and what they think the purpose is off using extensions or even front page. For that matter, but I nobody from dh would actually be reading the comments by nowso in the end, what is the point of even posting this, but nonetheless, keep up the good work dh
I apologise for the grammatical mistakes. I wasn’t really paying attention to what I was typing
I have a few users that use FrontPage Extensions. For some, it’s just what they’re familiar with. They’re not “coders” so dealing with HTML directly won’t ever work for them, but FrontPage Extensions let them do some nice things without understanding what they were doing. While I still have to deal with the extension-based sites, I don’t personally use FrontPage any more. I installed it last week to back up the few sites that use Extensions just in case removing the extensions completely destroys the sites (wouldn’t be the first time).
Lots of suggestions here for text editor tools– that’s what I generally use too. Dreamweaver is still decent as far as a WYSIWIG tool, though it’s cost is prohibitive for most users.
I use frontpage to built a couple of site, my site all simple stuff , will my site still work?? (sorry amateur here) just all boxes and links nothing fancy?? Thanks Matt
I still use frontpage because I love the function of frontpage extentions. I can edit a website on the fly. Now that frontpage is gone I have to mess with a stupid ftp program now. I will be looking for another provider if this isn’t fixed.
thanks

I’m in the same position as Rick. For folks who use FrontPage
it’s great and simple. I’ll have to move to an ISP that supports FrontPage
extensions.

i’m just waiting for all the people to complain about this one but i feel it is a waste of time and money for DH to continue to support outdated stuff!
